Abstract:
This thesis features a qualitative analysis of eight Korean media products — both fiction and nonfiction. For many years, South Korea (hereafter also called Korea) has been called the "world's plastic surgery capital" by many publications, such as Business Insider and The New Yorker. Although Business Insider considers the United States the "vainest country in the world," the numbers of cosmetic surgeries, percentage wise, per person in Korea still outnumber those in the United States, with 20 procedures per 1,000 persons. In this thesis, I argue by using the cultivation theory that Korean television, such as K-Dramas, talk shows and films, which celebrate transformations and feature makeovers and thus normalize cosmetic surgery, create a fantastic space for viewers where the viewers are compelled to act on a media-generated desire to undergo cosmetic surgery in the belief that doing so will also transform or better their lives in the same way it does for the characters in these Korean television productions.

Abstract:
Krásnou Vidu lze považovat za jeden z ústředních symbolů slovinské literatury. S tím souvisí i její obsahová šíře.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze two Spanish versions of Čapek's drama R. U. R. with regard to the English text they both originate from. The theoretical part examines the phenomena of indirect translation, metatextuality (especially as far as adaptations for children are concerned) and translation of theatre plays according to Jiří Levý (1963). In the empirical part, R. U. R. is first analyzed with regard to various quotes the author himself said about his play. Next, Paul Selver's English version of R. U. R. is examined: it is explained how the text originated, what kind of changes it contains in comparison to the original text and how it was received. Finally, the thesis focuses on Consuelo Vázquez de Parga's Spanish rendition of R. U. R., which is a translation of Selver's English text. Again, changes on both compositional & ideological-esthetical level and stylistic level are analyzed. Here, Popovič's (1975, 1983) typology of stylistic shifts and changes in translation was used as the main methodological instrument. Last but not least, the thesis also addresses Juan Cervera Borrás's Spanish adaptation of R. U. R. for youth theatre. Key words: R. U. R., Čapek, Spain, indirect translation, metatextuality, adaptation, mediating text, adaptations for children, Selver, Vázquez de Parga,...

"K-Dramas" as a globalized culture phenomenon, "Korean Wave, Hallyu", weighs heavily with its cultural foundation. With applying enormous elements of "Korean Culture" and "Romance Love" in "K-Dramas" while operated under capitalistic market mechanism, viewing rate was treated as currency and being exchanged at meantime. Under such mechanism, basing on strategically decipher the reading process of female audiences, tailored K-Dramas exports itself globally and obtains profits through consuming universal value in the way of culture industry. By reinforcing and reproducing the ideology of romantic love, K-Dramas carries the modernized collective consciousness of romantic love. Hence, K-Dramas models itself as a commodity representing pure romantic love. As a consequence of sociality, K-Dramas defines what romantic love is even more authentic than readers themselves. Romantic love that K-Dramas promotes becomes tacit knowledge inadvertently. Imaginative, expectative, and value meanings were emerged immediately after the concept of romantic love being viewed as part of universal value in the history of modernity and the concept of romantic love ascends itself ideologically. Such meanings form abstract compulsive power over acts and bestow on every socially acts on everyday practice. This study focus on single unmarried female audience in Taiwan; adopt cases which the young female case subject spontaneously watch K-dramas constantly; use deep interview approach to reconstruct and narrate how the case subject experienced K-dramas. This study intends to conduct theoretical referring through the act of female Taiwanese who watches K-dramas. Three questions are intended: first, what K-dramas is? Second, Who watches K-dramas? Third and last, Why she/they watches K-dramas? The research approach in this study originates from "Objective Hermeneutics" (Objektive Hermeneutiks in German) and its methodology. In order to discuss the logic of watching k-dramas and describe the compulsive force surrounding individual act, this study applies "Small Group Dynamics" and "Sequential analysis" through case reconstruction and theoretical referring. The ultimate aiming of this study is to conduct general reasoning from the selective case. This study expects to supplement related discussions in sociological psychology by executing experimental research and exploring the driven power behind the act of female audience in Taiwan of watching K-dramas.

The effect of destination exposure in dramas through television and popular media can achieve higher market penetration, stimulate the viewer's interest, and eventually induce future behavioral intentions. Recently, there are many Taiwanese viewers travel to Korea after watching popular Korean drama (K-drama). The destination of Korea became a holiday resort for Taiwanese. Despite K-drama entered Taiwan and became smash hits in Taiwan, the association between the viewer’s psychological factors and travel intention to Korea is still a black box and it needs to be further studied. Previous studies indicated that when the viewer are involved to a celebrity or attached to a role, they have significantly positive destination image. In addition, the viewer's celebrity involvement and parasocial attachment to K-drama’s role may facilitate cultural proximity because of K-drama are filled with Korean culture and history. This study aims to explore whether the viewer's celebrity involvement and parasocial attachment to K-drama’s role will have impacts on his/her perception of Korea image and cultural proximity and how such Korea image and cultural proximity will have impacts on the viewer's travel intention to Korea through perceived value. This study collected 205 valid questionnaires online during September 16, 2015 to December 17, 2015. The Questionnaire is uploaded on Google questionnaire website and sent the wed address on web communication. These participants are Taiwanese who had experiences in watching K-drama or traveled to Korea. SPSS20.0 and AMOS20.0 were used in analyzing the data and executing the structural equation model analysis (SEM). The results of structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis revealed that the viewer's celebrity involvement and parasocial attachment to K-drama’s role not only have significant positively influences on his/her perception of Korea image but also cultural proximity. Both Korea image and cultural proximity positively increased the viewer's perceived value and which enhanced his/her travel intention to Korea. According to this study findings, some managerial implications and suggestions is provided to tourism and media related industries. Managing the relationship between viewer and celebrity is a new form of marketing. Marketing managers can use product placement on TV program or drama. Taiwan media industries can make Taiwan brand’s products place on TV. It is may let people clearer to know the brand belongs to Taiwan and permeate the people’s mind to get loyalty. This study found that Korean drama is widely concerned by Taiwanese or other countries’ people. Thus, Taiwanese tourism industries can cooperate with Korean media industries. Through the Taiwanese destinations are introduced in Korean drama, the viewers will have higher intention to travel to Taiwanese destination such as, Yushan National Park, Taroko gorge national park, Kenting National Park, The Queen’s Head Rock, Twin Hearts Stone Weir, 101 building, and so on. Similar to the performance of Korean drama industries, Taiwanese drama industries can learn the way to integrate the beautiful scenes and cater the viewers’ like to design the interesting story or plot in a Taiwanese drama. Being good at using the drama to promote the beautiful place in Taiwan can stimulate the tourism of Taiwan. Wish the reputation of “Formosa” can be well-known in the world.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION The main aim of this study is to focus on conflict as a literary technique in general, and in particular on Matseke's drama, "Mmalonya". In this chapter the following observations with regard to Setswana drama have been made, viz. that succession has been a fertile ground for Setswana dramatists; that conflict has been treated in a somewhat general manner by literary critics and also that there are very few critical works written or published on this aspect in Setswana drama. CHAPTER 2: DEFINITIONS OF CONFLICT This chapter commences with some theoretical perspectives on conflict in general. These are followed by a detailed discussion of what conflict is, its nature and its relationship with other aspects of drama such as, actiorr, dialogue and characterization. CHAPTER 3: CONFLICT IN MMALONYA As was the case in chapter 2, this chapter also commences with an exposition of the nature of its principal subject viz. "Conflict in MmaLonya". This is followed by a discussion and a literary evaluation of the types of conflict in Matseke's play. It is observed that the evaluation of Matseke's drama in this regard revealed that this element constitutes the best area in his literary...

Williams, Susan Lillian. "Metamorphosis at 'the margin' : Bruce Mason, James K. Baxter, Mervyn Thompson, Renée and Robert Lord, five playwrights who have helped to change the face of New Zealand drama : a thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand." 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10179/1461.

Full text
Abstract:
Drama has been the slowest of the arts to develop an authentic New Zealand 'voice.' This thesis focuses on the work of five playwrights: Bruce Mason, James K. Baxter, Mervyn Thompson, Renée and Robert Lord, all of whom have set out to identify such a 'voice' and in so doing have brought about a metamorphosis in the nature of New Zealand drama. New Zealand has traditionally been regarded as being on 'the margin' in relation to the dominant culture of the colonizer (the Eurocentre). Before Bruce Mason began to challenge this 'centre' of power in the early 1950s, New Zealand playwrights were so intimidated by the Eurocentre that they usually set their plays in Europe, particularly in England, in order to make them acceptable to their audiences. Mason proposed that 'the margin' of New Zealand, rather than being seen as inferior, should be redefined as a fertile place capable of nurturing a new individual dramatic form quite distinct from colonial norms. All of my chosen playwrights have insisted upon the intrinsic value of a two-tiered concept of 'the margin.' By setting their plays (wherever possible) in the country of their birth, highlighting New Zealand social issues and in the process persuading theatre-going audiences that plays about this country are worth watching, they have given new life to 'the margin' (the culture of New Zealand as a whole). At the same time all of these five playwrights have recognized that minority groups - 'voices' from 'the outer margin' in relation to the Pakeha 'inner margin' of power - have been largely unrepresented or misrepresented in New Zealand plays. They have advocated the vital importance of women's 'voices,' Māori 'voices' and gay 'voices,' for example, in their exploration of a more sophisticated and inclusive understanding of what constitutes our national identity. Moreover, in a period of less than forty years, they have helped to facilitate the transition of New Zealand theatre from amateur to professional status and have been instrumental in providing the practical framework whereby future New Zealand playwrights may find an outlet for their work.

Scheckle, Linda Ann. "The relevance of the speech act theory to Buzani Kubawo." Diss., 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/17671.

Full text
Abstract:
Austin's Speech Act Theory is a valuable tool for the analysis of a literary text. In interaction, the intentionand purpose-success of linguistic communication can be gauged by establishing whether participants have met felicity conditions and have respected maxims. When the Co-operative Principle is ignored, special effects are achieved and receivers can only make sense of utterances through implicature and inferences based on background knowledge and mutual contextual beliefs. In the drama, Buzani kubawo, characters interact on four levels of time in space and place. They reveal themselves and convey theme through their speech and actions. Conflict is entrenched by lines of force drawn between opposing characters and between sub-worlds contrasted. Cohesion, determined by plot structure, and form, expressed on the endophoric and exophoric levels, give meaning to the drama. The micro-analysis of the wedding scene illustrates how communication can misfire should the playwright allow it!
