Abstract:
The limited research on bullying, mental health (MH), and help-seeking for Asian American (ASA) college students is concerning due to the public health importance. Korean drama (K-Drama) television shows may be an innovative approach to improve knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) on bullying. This study examined whether the KAB about school bullying improved after watching a K-Drama and asked participants about their perspectives of using a K-Drama as an intervention. A convenience sample of college students (n = 118) watched a K-Drama portraying school bullying and MH issues. Pre-/post-tests on KAB on bullying were conducted. Interviews (n = 16) were used to understand their experiences with K-Dramas. The mean age was 22.1 years (1.6 SD), 83.9% were female, and 77.1% were ASAs. Many reported experiences with anxiety (67.8%), depression (38.1%), and school bullying victim experience (40.8%). Post-test scores revealed significant differences in knowledge by most school bullying variables (e.g., victim; witness) and MH issues. There were varying significant findings in post-test scores in attitudes and behaviors by these variables. Participants reported that they “love” the drama, felt an emotional connection, and thought that K-Dramas can be an educational tool for ASAs. K-Dramas may be an effective population-level tool to improve health outcomes among ASAs.

Abstract:
Precision mental health (MH) holds great potential for revolutionizing MH care and reducing the burden of mental illness. Efforts to engage Asian Americans in precision MH research is necessary to help reduce MH disparities. Korean drama (“K-drama”) television shows may be an effective educational tool to increase precision MH knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors (KAB) among Asian Americans. This study determined whether KAB improved after participating in a K-drama precision MH workshop, and examined the participants’ perspectives about K-dramas’ utility as an educational tool. A K-drama precision MH workshop in English/Vietnamese/Korean was conducted with a convenience sample (n = 122). Pre-/post-tests on precision MH KAB (genetics and genetic testing, and MH and help-seeking) and a survey on K-dramas’ utility as an educational tool were administered. Findings revealed a significant difference in the pre- and post-test KAB scores overall, by genetics and genetic testing, and by MH and help-seeking. There were also significant increases in the overall post-test KAB scores by workshop (language) participation. Overall, participants responded positively on the utility of K-dramas as a precision MH educational tool. This study demonstrates the feasibility of K-drama as an innovative and widely available health education tool to educate communities about precision MH.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been a phenomenal rise in the popularity of South Korean television dramas, pop music, movies, fashion and celebrities in East and Southeast Asia. Korean television dramas are a significant component of this cultural diffusion known as the ‘Korean Wave’. Through focus group interviews with female viewers in Singapore, this study seeks to explore how Singaporean women make sense of Korean TV dramas (K-dramas) as female subjects living in the gender hierarchy of their society, and how K-dramas become resources for reflexivity for them.

Abstract:
The study of Korean media, and K-dramas specifically, has been dominated largely by discourses surrounding the ‘Korean Wave’ and the increased popularity of South Korean popular culture abroad. More specifically, many English-language analyses have tended to focus their attention on the Korean Wave as an analytical framework, thus failing to acknowledge the ways in which these texts address domestic audiences and societal issues specific to South Korea. Thus, little attention has been paid to more implicit representations of the nation and its past in these K-dramas, a particularly noteworthy oversight when we consider that melodrama, a distinctly reflexive genre, is the governing mode of many contemporary K-dramas. Thus, this article aims to demonstrate the multiplicity of meanings that can exist within these media texts, paying particular attention to the reflexive capacities of the melodramatic mode. Through the examination of two case studies, Ireland and Descendants of the Sun, this article will discuss the ways in which shifting inter-Korean relations have been articulated in both dramas through sociopolitical contextualization and narrative analysis. This article will examine the use of foreign places and foreign crises in these dramas, and demonstrate their capacity to function as arenas for the expression and exploration of national trauma relating to the Korean war and the division of the Korean peninsula. This article aims to demonstrate that despite the increasing hybridization of Asian media, it remains important to analyse the relationship between K-dramas and domestic audiences in order to better understand the ways in which they address and work through significant social and political concerns for South Korean audiences.

Abstract:
Abstract In the article, I discuss new forms of mobility allowed by digital practices, i. e. digital mobilities consisting in visiting geographical places from and through a screen. This discussion is based on my online ethnographic research on international fans of South Korean television series, K-Dramas. The international fandom of K-Dramas, and in a larger sense, South Korean pop cultural products - exemplified by the success of South Korean rapper Psy’s “Gangnam Style” in 2012 -, is a continually growing global phenomenon that has been observed from the end of the 2000s on; a fandom that is mainly constituted through the Internet. However, instead of discussing already thoroughly researched “classic” participatory digital activities of television series fans, as blogging or writing fan fiction, I will focus on still overseen forms of mobility practices engendered by the watching of K-Dramas. My research shows that international fans of K-Dramas are highly mobile - but as much digitally as actually. They do not only travel physically to Korea to visit film locations. They also engage in digital mobilities to Korea through the mediation of desktop web mapping services like Google Maps and their South Korean equivalents, Daum and Naver. This screen screen tourism - as I call it -, then, differs in many ways from screen tourism how it is discussed in previous research on media. In describing and discussing these forms of digital mobility, special attention will be given to two dimensions: (1) the techniques fans use to find film locations, and (2) fans’ “ethno-mapping,” i. e. the methods they have created to map out film locations online.

Abstract:
South Korea has pursued a multidimensional public diplomacy strategy in which Korean television exports and capitalization have emerged as a public and commercial cultural diplomacy tool over the last two decades. This article examines the widespread influence of Korean television content, including digital serial delivery, cultural exportation, cultural interactions, and capitalization—that is, content sales, indirect advertising, and media-induced tourism. Empirical data was obtained from Turkey’s audience members using the online survey tool. As a result of the social and cultural impact, the respondents’ opinions on Korean serials are both animated and rational. The creation of audience members’ social, psychological, and cultural experiences with K-Dramas clarifies their intimacy and activeness. Unlike local or other international content, a significant number of respondents claim that Korean TV serials are not only a source of entertainment but also have profound edifying aspects. According to the results, “Cultural Proximity” and “Content Availability” are two of the most important factors in choosing Korean TV serials over foreign content. The “content availability” is based on the emergence and expansion of Streaming TV; however, in cultural proximity, similarities in family norms and values in both nations are notable.

Abstract:
Ophelia of Pirandello: reflections around female madnessAbstractThe article is devoted to an analysis of Luigi Pirandello’s drama As You Desire Me which drawsinspiration from an actual event connected with questions on the identity of a person sufferingfrom amnesia. Unlike the real incident, the main character of Pirandello’s is a woman knownonly by her alias Stranger, as the main theme of the drama is establishing her true identity. Thepresent article aims at proving that Pirandello’s drama is not a criminal mystery, but rathera deep reflection on the notion of human personality which in the case of a woman receivesnew, interesting meanings. One of them is spotting the correspondence between Pirandelli’sStranger and Shakespeare’s Ophelia, as madness of both characters appears to have similarroots: female’s insanity seen through the prism of both dramas appears as defiance againstthe culture of patriarchy, but also stems from the conviction of one’s own emptiness andundefinedness. In this context, referring to studies on feminist criticism (E. Shawalter,K. Kłosińska, K. Woźniak), including studies on female hysteria is of relevance. Even thoughthe structure of drama appears to lead to a finale in which the truth about the character isuncovered, Pirandello does not reveal her true identity. However, questions on female identityand female madness are worth reflecting upon, even if they remain unanswered. Keywords: Luigi Pirandello, As you desire me, impersonality, Ophelia, tarantism, Jean-MartinCharcot, Aleksandra Mianowska, female madness, female identity, Elaine Showalter, feministliterary criticism

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines two 2013 TV miniseries, The Heirs and My Love from the Star, by relating their melodramatic aesthetics to the survivalist imperative under neoliberal governance. From the colonial sinp’a theater to Golden Age films, melodrama has operated as a popular mode of imagination that expresses inarticulate experiences generated over the course of Korea’s modernization. To extend and complicate existing scholarship on modern melodrama, this study approaches recent K-dramas’ melodramatic modes as both an affective response to and an everyday tactic for coping with failing economic democracy in contemporary Korea. In this light, the intensifying fantastic elements of the genre are deemed not so much anachronistic as tactical, as they are deployed to reclaim the justice and equality that are felt to be hopelessly disappearing in daily lives. As I look at their excessive aesthetics within the context of diminishing social mobility in the neoliberal era, my analysis of the two miniseries further notes the gendered structure of these melodramatic fantasies in which the survival of women, who have fewer privileges, is achieved through the reform of male elites.

Abstract:
Rapid increase in video databases has forced the industry to have efficient and effective frameworks for video retrieval and indexing. Video segmentation into scenes is widely used for video summarization, partitioning, indexing and retrieval. In this paper, we propose a framework for scene detection mainly based on entropy and Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) features. First, we detect the fade and abrupt boundaries based on frame entropy analysis and SURF features matching. Fade boundaries are smart indication of scenes beginning or ending in many videos and dramas, and are detected by frame entropy analysis. Before abrupt boundary detection, unnecessary frames which are obviously not abrupt boundaries, such as blank screens, high intensity influenced images, sliding credits, are removed. Candidate boundaries are detected to make SURF features efficient for abrupt boundary detection, and SURF features between candidate boundaries and their adjacent frames are used to detect the abrupt boundaries. Second, key frames are extracted from abrupt shots. We evaluate our key frame extraction with other famous algorithms and show the effectiveness of the key frames. Finally, scene boundaries are detected using sliding window of size K over the key frames in temporal order. In experimental evaluation on the TRECVID-2007 shot boundary test set, the algorithm for shot boundary achieves substantial improvements over state-of-the-art methods with the precision of 99% and the recall of 97.8%. Experimental results for video segmentation into scenes are also promising, compared to famous state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract:
With great enthusiasm and excitement I turned to this English translation of the Erlauer Spiele, magisterially done by Stephen K. Wright, Professor Emeritus of English at the Catholic University of America, and I was not disappointed. With great philological skills and great aplomb he tackles his task and makes available five major Christmas and Easter plays from fifteenth-century Carinthia, today in Austria, from the first half of the fifteenth century, in English. He introduces us in a very learned, yet also very lucid and clearly structured manner to the genre itself and the specifics of those five plays. Then follow the five plays themselves in translation, which are thoroughly annotated. Subsequently, Wright offers very brief excerpts from Erlau I (ll. 27–44), Erlau II (ll. 319–56), Erlau III (ll. 560–622), Erlau IV (ll. 330–70), and Erlau V (ll. 277–311). Those allow us to carry out at least a brief comparison between the original late medieval German text and the English translation. I can confirm that Wright has done an excellent translation job, although one could quibble over small matters here and there (V, 287: “so wirt guldein unser har” is: “so our hair will turn golden,” and not: “then our hair must be golden too!”). Those appendices, however, do not help us much at all to get a sense of the original works.

Abstract:
Recent phenomenon of television is often shows a variety of Korean products and one of them was Korean drama (K-Drama). K-Drama is one of the television drama series that is famous until today and very popular among public. The objective of this research was to find out is there a relationship between K-Drama shows in television with behavior of the teenager to imitate Korean fashion at Bhinneka highschool Karawang. This research used quantitative with correlational analysis data by using social learning theory from Albert Bandura. The Theory was discovered by Albert Bandura to discuss the learning process through media massa as opposite to traditional learning process. The starting point of learning process is a phenimenon that can be observed, directly or indirectly. That phenomenon may occur in the person's daily activities, and also be presented directly by television, books, films and other media massa. The results of this study found there was a significant relationship between the intensity of K-Drama show with low but definite relationship (rs = 0.375), K-Drama message content with medium relationship (rs = 0,517) and K-Drama show attractiveness with strong relationship (rs = 0.641) with behavior of teenager to imitate Korean fashion.

Abstract:
Existing research on Korean Wave celebrities has focused on their transnational character at the expense of a thorough consideration of the phenomena’s emergence as part of the wider transformation of the Korean broadcasting and entertainment industry. This article draws on the analysis of existing literature and in-depth interviews to demonstrate that Korean Wave celebrity emerges as a result of the flexibilization in the Korean television drama industry’s production process, which in turn is the product of globalization and financialization of the Korean broadcasting industry from the late 1980s and 1990s, respectively. The combined effects of these processes led to the creation of the K-drama conglomerate. Korean Wave celebrity is central to this system, with the celebrity image functioning as fixed capital and rendering invisible the very real labour performed within the K-drama conglomerate. That being so, the K-drama conglomerate and the Korean Wave celebrity are excellent examples of capitalism’s latest manoeuvre: the creation of intangible commodities capable of expanding the channels of profit by attracting attention and rendering related labour invisible.
