Abstract:
The energy-loss effect of the projectile for direct inner-shell ionization cross sections by charged-particle impact has been examined. The relativistic and nonrelativistic calculations for K-shell ionization with and without the energy-loss effect are made in the plane-wave Born approximation and compared with the Brandt-Lapicki theory for the corrections of the relativistic and energy-loss effect. It is demonstrated that the Brandt-Lapicki method gives a good approximation to both relativistic and nonrelativistic cross sections, which implicitly take into account the energy-loss effect. Howe

The effect of propranolol (0.15 mg/kg body wt) on K+ fluxes was investigated in seven healthy males performing 8-min two-legged knee-extension exercise at two different powers. K+ concentration was measured in the femoral vein by a K(+)-selective electrode, and leg blood flow was measured by the dye-dilution technique. During control bouts, rates of change in femoral venous K+ concentration were 38 +/- 10 and 53 +/- 8 mumol.l–1.s-1 at onset of exercise (K+ efflux) and -14 +/- 3 and -34 +/- 3 mumol.l–1.s-1 at cessation of exercise (K+ reuptake) at low and high powers, respectively. AbstractPotassium (K) is the most abundant cation in intracellular fluid where it plays a key role in maintaining cell function. The majority of K consumed (60–100 mmol day−1) is lost in the urine, with the remaining excreted in the stool, and a very small amount lost in sweat. Little is known about the bioavailability of K, especially from dietary sources. Less is understood on how bioavailability may affect health outcomes. Potassium is an essential nutrient that has been labeled a shortfall nutrient by recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans Advisory Committees. Increases in K intake have b

AbstractPotassium (K) outputs comprise removals in harvested crops and losses via a number of pathways. No specific environmental issues arise from K losses to the wider environment, and so they have received little attention. Nevertheless, K is very soluble and so can be leached to depth or to surface waters. Also, because K is bound to clays and organic materials, and adsorbed K is mostly associated with fine soil particles, it can be eroded with particulate material in runoff water and by strong winds. It can also be lost when crop residues are burned in the open. Losses represent a potenti

The tradeoff between privacy protection and information loss can be controlled with parameter k. We analyze the data complexity of k-unmatchability under different notions of anonymization.

Abstract:
This report describes a research project for evaluating the applicability of the widely accepted 80 percent criterion for elongation of ground anchors to anchors with unbonded lengths exceeding 100 feet. This issue is driven by several recent projects involving ground anchors for landslide stabilization in which a significant percentage of the anchors did not meet the criterion that requires measured elongation during proof load testing of at least 80 percent of the theoretical elastic elongation. The projects involved anchor unbonded lengths in the range of 85 to 220 feet, which is outside th

Abstract:
The effects of short term heat exposure on the changes of body fluid and renal function were studied in four heifer buffaloes weighing between 174-207 kg. The animals were individually exposed to the sun up to 8 h each day over period of ten days (nonshaded period). Before this, they were kept in normal ambient temperature (control period). Each animal was fed same diet throughout experimental periods. In short term heat exposure, nonshaded buffaloes increased body water turnover rate while the marked decreases in total body water and blood volume were noted. On the first five days, there was

Abstract:
Concentrated flow erosion in rills, pipes, ephermal gullies, and gullies is a major contributor of downstream sedimentation. When rill or gullies form in a landscape, a 3- to 5-fold increase in soil loss commonly occurs. The balance between the erosive power of the flow and the erosion resistance of the bed material determines the rate of concentrated flow erosion. The resistance of the bed material to detachment depends primarily on the magnitude of the interparticle forces or cohesion holding the particles and aggregates together. The effect of soil properties on bed material resistance and
