The energy-loss effect of the projectile for direct inner-shell ionization cross sections by charged-particle impact has been examined. The relativistic and nonrelativistic calculations for K-shell ionization with and without the energy-loss effect are made in the plane-wave Born approximation and compared with the Brandt-Lapicki theory for the corrections of the relativistic and energy-loss effect. Swelling of astrocytes in the brain is a major cause of the morbidity and mortality associated with stroke and head trauma. Using a human astrocytoma cell line (UC-11MG) as a model system, we studied cell volume changes caused by ATP depletion under conditions mimicking hypoxia. ATP levels were reduced to less than 10% of control using the metabolic inhibitors KCN or antimycin in combination with glucose deprivation. N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) is a sulfhydryl-reacting agent known to stimulate chloride-dependent K transport in a variety of red cells. In high K sheep red cells, NEM-induced K movements are greater in magnitude in young cells compared with old cells. We hypothesized that human red cells might respond to NEM like high K sheep red cells. To test this idea, cells of various age were exposed to 0.5 mM NEM. We found that, after a 4-h incubation, young cells lost 50% of cell K, compared with 10% K loss in older cells. K loss in all fractions was inhibited by chloride replacement or furosemide.

Using a computer-controlled inverted torsion pendulum at frequencies near 1 Hz, we determined the mechanical losses in a uniaxially fiber-reinforced composite. The composite comprised glass fibers in an epoxy-resin matrix. We studied three fiber contents: 0,41, and 49 vol.%. Three mechanical-loss peaks appeared: above 300 K, near 200 K, and near 130 K.
