Abstract:
This article explores the historical dynamics between Radreng (Rwa sgreng) and Sangpu (Gsang phu) monasteries, focussing on the eleventh to the thirteenth century. It challenges the commonly held view that these two institutions belonged to a single tradition, known as the Kadam (Bka’ gdams). Furthermore, based on an examination of the earliest available sources, it argues that Sangpu’s promotion of scholasticism had an instrumental role in shaping not only the respective identities of the two monasteries, but also much of the Tibetan religious landscape from the late eleventh century onwards.
