Abstract:
ABSTRACTAlthough conflict in Zimbabwe's diamond mining sector has recently received much international scrutiny, very little research has examined conflict in Zimbabwe's gold mining sector. This article analyses how a nationwide crackdown calledOperation Chikorokoza Chapera(‘No More Illegal Mining’) affected – and ‘disciplined’ – livelihoods in profound ways in both licensed and unlicensed gold mining regions. Drawing on interviews conducted between 2006 and 2013 with artisanal miners in the Insiza, Umzingwani and Kadoma areas as well as miners who crossed the border to Mozambique, the study reveals how a highly politicised crackdown led to uneven consequences. The analysis highlights both structural and physical violence, with more than 25,000 miners and traders arrested between 2006 and 2009 and more than 9,000 still imprisoned in 2013. Situating the crackdown within evolving political and economic interests, the study contributes to an understanding of how simplified discourses on ‘eradicating illegal mining’ mislead and mask power dynamics, while policing activities transform patterns of resource control. The study also emphasises that conceptualisations of the crackdown's legacy should carefully consider the agency of artisanal miners' associations, which, in some cases, have been actively seeking to resist coercive policies and rebuild livelihoods in the aftermath ofOperation Chikorokoza Chapera.

Abstract:
This study sought to explore challenges faced by Open and Distance Learning (ODL) students in rural communities using Kadoma District as a case study. The specific objectives of this study were to (i) identify challenges faced by ODL students in rural communities in achieving their educational goals and (ii) establish effects of these challenges in accomplishing/finalizing their programmes. The research employed a mixed research approach to triangulate the results. The study used a case study research design to solicit information. The target population was undergraduate students who were currently pursuing the following programmes; Commerce, Education, Applied Sciences, and Agriculture. A sample of 30 postgraduate students and five key informants were used to collect data. The sampling techniques employed were convenience and purposive samplings respectively. Findings revealed that students in rural communities are facing some challenges during their academic career. These challenges include inadequate access to tutor support and physical resources, inflexible practices and access to ICT, poor or no electricity to operate ICT appliances, financial, cultural, community and employment responsibilities. These challenges have some effects which include but not limited to late submission of assignments, poor quality results and university dropouts. Basing on these conclusions, the study recommends the university to recruit more tutors who should be available for students at district offices. The university should ensure technological development at the district centers, and within the student’s locations. The study also recommends the university to provide students in the rural communities with study skills, time management skills, as well as guidance and counseling required to manage their studies. The study finally recommends further studies on strategies to encounter challenges faced by ODL students in rural communities.

Abstract:
Artisanal mining communities around the world are diverse, dynamic and distinct in nature they vary from culture-to-culture, region-to-region and mine-to-mine, and change over the course of time.Women within these communities are also heterogeneous and unique; however, they tend to be engaged in specific roles throughout the world.A qualitative approach in form of a descriptive survey research design was adopted, in which purposive systematic sampling was used and qualitative data was generated. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data from predominantly mining towns Kadoma, Kwekwe and Shurugwi as well surrounding areas. The sample size was compelled by the different mining areas which are a considerable distance from each other with sparsely distributed population. The focus of data collection was on women’s responsibilities in mineral processing activities range from crushing, grinding, sieving, washing and panning, to amalgamation and amalgam decomposition in the case of gold mining.Typically, women are labourers (e.g. panners, ore carriers and processors), providers of goods and services (for instance cooks, shopkeepers) and are often solely responsible for domestic chores. The total number of artisanal miners for the three mining towns was 1500 and a sample of 10% (150 miners) of the three towns, with each town having 50 was sampled. The artisanal miners taken to be part of the population sample were systematic selected till the last person. The composition of the miners was made up 41% of the females while the remaining 59% were male respondents.

Abstract:
Aconitum Linnaeus (1753: 532) (Ranunculaceae) consists of about 400 species and is widely distributed in temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere (Tamura 1993, Brink & Woods 1997, Li & Kadota 2001, Luo et al. 2005). This genus has been usually divided into three subgenera: A. subg. Aconitum, A. subg. Lycoctonum (Candolle 1817: 367) Petermann (1846: 15), and A. subg. Gymnaconitum (Stapf 1905: 178) Rapaics (1907: 139) (Bisset 1981, Kadota 1987, Li & Kadota 2001, Lim & Park 2001, Wang et al. 2009). Among them, A. subg. Lycoctonum is perennial and rhizomatous and consists of about 40 species (Tamura 1995, Hong et al. 2017). In the Korean Peninsula, eight species and one variety have been reported in this subgenus (Lim et al. 2017, Korea National Arboretum 2017), of which four species, namely A. pseudolaeve Nakai (1935: 139), A. pteropus Nakai (1937: 400), A. puchonroenicum Uyeki & Sakata (1938: 14), and A. quelpaertense Nakai (1935: 145), are endemic to the Korean Peninsula.

Abstract:
Assistant Professor Tomofumi Kadoya is part of a team within the Graduate School of Material Science at the University of Hyogo in Japan. He is engaged with a range of different investigations related to conductive organic materials. One of the main focuses of Kadoya's research is organic transistors and organic charge-transfer (CT) complexes. CT complexes achieve conductivity by chemical doping but in organic transistors, conduction carriers are generated by field effect, where an electric field is used to control the flow of current. Among the many goals of the research, Kadoya and his team want to increase the methods and types of organic doping.

Therapeutic Effects of Baloxavir Marboxil against Influenza A Virus Infection in Ferrets." Open Forum Infectious Diseases 5, suppl_1 (November 2018): S413. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/ofid/ofy210.1181.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Background Baloxavir marboxil (BXM) is a novel small molecule inhibitor of cap-dependent endonuclease that is essential for influenza virus transcription and replication. In this study, pharmacokinetic profiles of BXM and baloxavir acid (BXA), an active form of BXM, were first examined in ferrets, and then the therapeutic effects of BXM against influenza A virus infection were compared with that of oseltamivir phosphate in ferrets. Methods The plasma exposure of BXA and BXM was examined after a single oral administration of BXM at doses of 10 and 30 mg/kg. The concentrations in plasma were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(LC/MS/MS). For efficacy study, ferrets infected intranasally with A/Kadoma/2006 (H1N1) were administrated 10 or 30 mg/kg of BXM orally twice daily for 1 day, starting at 1 day post-infection (p.i.) or administrated 10 mg/kg of BXM orally twice daily for 1 day, starting at 2 days p.i.. Oseltamivir phosphate was administered at doses of 5 mg/kg orally twice daily for 2 days as a comparison. The virus titer in the nasal washes and body temperature change were monitored during infection. Results BXA was detected in ferret plasma after a single oral administration of BXM at 10 and 30 mg/kg, in more than a dose-proportional manner. When the treatment was initiated at 1 day p.i., BXM at 10 and 30 mg/kg showed reduction of virus titer to an undetectable level on day 2 p.i. and statistically significant reduction in virus titer over time from day 2 to 3 p.i. compared with vehicle and oseltamivir phosphate. Moreover, the change of body temperature over time from 8 hours after the first administration to 3 days p.i. was significantly lower in BXM at 10 and 30 mg/kg than vehicle and oseltamivir phosphate. These effects were also observed in ferrets treated with BXM at 10 mg/kg even when administered at 2 day p.i. where ferret exhibit fever that is more than 1 degree higher than on 1 day p.i.. Conclusion Single-day oral administration of BXM had beneficial effects on viral titer and symptoms in ferrets infected with influenza A virus, which were superior to those observed with oseltamivir phosphate and vehicle. Lush rainfall intensity in Indonesia mostly often affecting to flood disaster. Managing in flood problem must be supporting by good infrastructure of flood management such as dam, irrigation system, drainages, etc. In designing a water building, we needs maximum rainfall information with certain return period. The amount of maximum rainfall for design are different according to lifetime and reservoir capacity such as for a big dam that needs maximum rainfall information with long return period approximately 50,100 years, and for irrigation system needs shorter maximum rainfall information about 2,5,10 years. We use three methods in this analysis: E.J. Gumbel Method, Log Pearson III Method and Iway Kadoya Method. Result of analysis from above methods show that Log Pearson III method and Iway Kadoya method as identically as E.J Gumbell method.

Abstract:
AimsThere is no internationally accepted grading system for lung adenocarcinoma despite the new WHO classification. The architectural grade, the Kadota grade and the Sica score were evaluated and compared with overall (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS).MethodsComprehensive histological subtyping was used in a series of resected stage I lung adenocarcinoma to identify subtypes of adenocarcinomas, the architectural grade, the Kadota grade, the Sica grade, the mitotic count, nuclear atypia, the presence of lymphovascular, vascular and airway propagation, necrosis, and micropapillary or solid growth pattern in any percentage. Statistical models fitted included Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox proportional hazard regression models.Results261 stage I adenocarcinomas were included. The 5-year survivals of different subtypes were as follows: lepidic (n=40, OS: 92.5%; DFS 91.6%), acinar (n=54, OS: 81.8%; DFS: 68.6%), papillary (n=49, OS: 73.6%; DFS: 61.0%), solid (n=95, OS: 64.7%; DFS: 57.8%) and micropapillary (n=23, OS: 34.8%; DFS: 33.5%). Concerning the architectural grade, there were significant differences between OS and DFS of low and intermediate (pOS=0.005, pDFS<0.001), low and high (pOS<0.001, pDFS<0.001) and intermediate and high grades (pOS=0.002, pDFS<0.001). Low-grade and intermediate grade tumours did not differ in survival according to Kadota grade and Sica grade. In the multivariable model, architectural grade was found to be an independent prognostic marker. In another model, architectural pattern proved to be superior to architectural grade.ConclusionsOf the three grading systems compared, the architectural grade makes the best distinction between the outcome of low-grade, intermediate-grade and high-grade stage I adenocarcinomas.

Abstract:
Abstract In March 1971, B.R. Gopal discovered a partially buried pillar with visible inscribed writing in the village of Guḍnāpur in Karnataka. The monument has since become known as the Guḍnāpur Pillar Inscription of Ravivarman (ca. 465–500 CE) after the ruler of the early Kadamba kingdom who commissioned it. The inscription preserves a compelling historical record that details the intersections of religious and political performance at the Kadamba court as centered around a temple to Kāma constructed within the confines of the royal residence at Vaijayantī (Banavasi), and the distribution of agrarian lands to support its maintenance. This study presents a new translation and analysis of the text and a discussion of the pillar as a ‘text-monument’ that was both embedded within and constitutive of landscapes: physical and built as well as rhetorical and imagined. By presenting the Guḍnāpur inscription as a text-monument situated within multiple landscapes, the article reveals how documentary, donative, religious, and agrarian practices supported state-making in an early South Indian kingdom.

Abstract:
Control and Handling of Flood Issues No Regardless of optimum infrastructure availability in flood control efforts such as soil walls, irrigation networks, dams, drainage and others. Planning in the design of water structures for flood control needs to use accurate information and data of the population, such as information on the maximum rainfall data of the area with a certain repetition period, it is necessary to calculate the flood discharge of the plan so that it can calculate the capacity of the dam to be built. This study aims to determine the ratio of maximum rainfall using three calculation methods, namely Iway Kadoya, EJ Gumbel and Log Person III. This research was conducted to get an idea of the maximum rainfall with a return period of 2,5,10,15,20, .... 100 years. The location of this research is conducted in Tualang Subdistrict, the data of the period of maximum rainfall is using the data of rainfall observation station in Tualang Subdistrict. Based on the calculation of rainfall design done can be concluded that the calculation of rainfall design with Iway Kadoya method is greater when compared with Log Pearson Type III and EJ method.
