Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to analyze the religious connotations of kagura, a Japanese ritualistic performing art, by examining the choral and musical structure of the ceremony in which it is performed. While this term, and also its style of presentation is complex, it doesn’t indicate any musical character. For now, this word, kagura, doesn’t function as a scientific term. This problem is the result of a lack of perspective around sound phenomena. In spite of the variety of kagura, only the accompaniment of the dance is treated as music. A new perspective must be found. The kagura is a communication tool between men and deities, or kami. It is often explained as a physical and/or conceptual medium in which men call upon the deity so that they may obtain the benefits of its supernatural power. However, this is metaphysical. The worshipers need to encode the kami so that it can be recognized physically. My hypothesis is that sound, music, and dance are used for this purpose. To prove this, I took five examples, mainly the Odaidai ceremony held at the Kawaguchi-Asama-jinja shrine in the center of Japan. My structural analysis clarified that the shamanic technique is hidden in its choreography. Thus, we can confirm that this method is compatible with the analysis of gestures in rituals, since dance is just a continuation of shamanic technique. Today, the kagura is increasingly appreciated as a performing art. Even though its ritual meanings are no longer transmitted, the ritual is always effective as long as the kagura is performed correctly

Abstract:
Role language in Japanese is a term defined in 2000 by Satoshi Kinsui. Role language usesdifferent pronouns, copula and sentence-ending particles to depict a certain type of characterusing language. This thesis compares the language of the character Kagura from the mangaGin Tama , written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi, to the role language definitions featured inSatoshi Kinsui’s work Virtual Japanese: Enigmas of Role Language , as well as the standardizedJapanese language. Kagura is an alien character landing on planet earth in Edo -period Japan, her character is portrayed with Chinese details and her language is known as the aruyo rolelanguage, which has been used to represent the Chinese in fiction. The case study consisted of 530 lines from the original manga gathered from seven differentvolumes spanning ten years between the first and the last. The analysis featured in the result section produced statistics of how many lines contained acertain phrase or sentence-ending particle and began analyzing the meaning of particles andhow they are used in the context of the manga . The conclusion brings forth new discoveriesregarding the command conjugation and its equivalence in role language.

Abstract:
This paper explores the apparent contradiction between Rwanda’s impressive and internationally-recognized development in physical, economic and social conditions largely driven by the Kagame’s administration policies and the pervasive human rights violations also resulting from government policy. The author asks the question whether the nation – two decades removed from the 1994 genocide which resulted in the death of 800,000 people in 100 days – is ready and capable of transitioning to a political system and set of policies that value human rights and economic development equally, and whether that transition would reduce the risk of future unrest and violence.

Abstract:
Laughter is a universal behavior, all humans laugh. Our purpose is not to dispute this but to argue that laughter cannot be solely reduced to this universal definition. This study aims at going beyond the debate about innate and acquired behaviors by showing that although laughter may be universal, it results also from a social learning process. This research is based on an ethnographic survey undertaken in villages from the Kagera region in Tanzania. Laughter has already raised a social challenge there in the past. In 1962, a “fit of giggling”, locally known as "the disease of laughter", spread in a girl’s boarding school. This event proves the existence of an affective script. In these villages, laughter is an acquired social practice, to some extent laughter there is a right which must be acquired. Individuals must laugh according to their age, status and gender, and according to context. Some laughs are inappropriate and must be inhibited, if they are not, they are seen as disrespectful, obscene, even dangerous, as were the girl’s laughs in 1962. Other laughers reflect ethic and aesthetic social obligations. However, and despite the institution of these "laughing frames", people perpetually reinvent new ways of laughing. They appear in social back-stages, in liminal or in-between spaces. In these villages, there are also outsiders whose laughter compromise socials norms. Thus, if laugher can reinforce social order it also can also question it. This thesis tries to demonstrate that the body, the socio-cultural factors and the inter-individual relations are in permanent interaction, that is why laughter must be understood as a fluctuating and shifting phenomenon

Abstract:

From long ago, rivers have always sustained livelihoods of the peoples through the utilisation of different natural resources available in the basin. All over the world, many rivers have been dammed in the spirit of performing various purposes: agricultural irrigation, domestic water supply and power generation or flood control.

By the year 2001, the World Commission on Dams brought into focus the debate on damrelated impacts on local economies, societal cultures, livelihoods security and environmental conservation. The outcome of the World Commission on Dams consultation strongly recommended the governments to involve all stakeholders to address appropriately all issues associated with dams.

The overall focus of this master thesis is the projected Rusumo Falls dam in the Kagera River Basin (East Africa). Based on literature documentation completed by on-ground observations and qualitative interviews at Rusumo, various issues connected with the dam are presented.

In the first part, the Kagera River Basin background information is provided. It gives an overview of the physical and human characteristics of the Kagera watershed and subcatchments. A brief history and socio-economic indicators are given to enlighten the outsiders about the development challenges of the riparian countries of Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. Regional frameworks for the development and management of Kagera Basin natural resources are presented: The Kagera Basin Organisation and the Nile Basin Initiative.

Section two analyses the likely social problems around the Rusumo Hydro Electric Project resulting from the land issue and the electricity needs and posing a dilemma for the governments committed to reverse the poverty and developing the economies. Benefits and drawbacks of the dam as perceived by the beneficiaries are thoroughly listed.

Based on the overwhelming supports from the Rusumo people, the governments of Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania together with the international community, a public participation scenario is suggested in the last chapter. It encourages the governments to come together with all interested groups and the affected people of Rusumo and address any matters associated to the dam management process.

The conclusion of this study draws some strategies and methods to ensure full popular participation in the dam management. It provides some ways to involve all stakeholders to address the related issues. As the Rusumo people perceptions of the dam possible effects might not be realistic, the popular participation can offer them a good opportunity to handle socio-economic problems such as the land issue, the economy restructure and the nature conservation. In this case study, the government of Rwanda is therefore responsible for the establishment of platforms for a broad popular consultation.

Abstract:
Kalaharituber pfeilii (Henn.) Trappe & Kagan-Zur commonly known as the “Kalahari truffle” is a desert truffle species identified from the Kalahari region of southern Africa. Two other species, Eremiomyces echinulatus (Trappe & Marasas) Trappe & Kagan-Zur and Mattirolomyces austroafricanus (Trappe & Marasas) Trappe & Kovacs are also known to occur in other parts of southern Africa. Truffles are hypogeous fruiting bodies of Ascomycetes, important to humans for their nutritional value and medicinal characteristics. These truffles are known as desert truffles as they prefer to occur under arid or semi-arid conditions characteristic of deserts. Truffle development depends on the presence of a mycorrhizal host, associated microorganisms as well as soil and climatic characteristics. It has been suggested that K. pfeilii has a suspected broad plant host range which includes herbaceous to woody trees and shrubs. However, these relationships have not been verified. Indigenous people of the Kalahari believe that truffles are found under grasses. In the Kalahari, truffle fruiting bodies are often found entangled in Stipagrostis ciliata (Desf.) De Winter var. capensis (Trin. & Rupr.) De Winter roots. S. ciliata, also known as the tall bushman-grass, is the most common grass found in the Kalahari. The objective of this study was to provide conclusive evidence that S. ciliata var. capensis is a host of the Kalahari truffle. Truffle fruiting bodies and grass roots from where the truffles were found were collected from Upington, South Africa. The fruiting bodies were identified by observing their morphological characteristics using the ‘Keys of Truffle genera’. All observed physical properties were similar to those of K. pfeilii and further identification was done using molecular techniques. DNA was extracted from the fruiting bodies, mycelial cultures, rhizosheaths and from the S. ciliata var. capensis grass roots, which were then amplified using the specific K. pfeilii specific primers TPF3 and TPR1 and sequenced. The obtained sequence results confirmed that the collected fruiting bodies were those of the K. pfeilii and the molecular techniques also confirmed that K. pfeilii DNA was present in the S. ciliata var. capensis rhizosheath and root cells. Microscopy showed an ectendomycorrhizal association between K. pfeilii and S. ciliata var. capensis. Mycorrhizal resynthesis experiments were conducted to establish this mycorrhizal association in-vitro. They were unsuccessful because of the structure of the grass and the availability of contaminants. And more...

Full text
Abstract:
Background The role of social capital for promoting health has been extensively studied in recent years but there are few attempts to investigate the possible influence of social capital on HIV prevention, particularly in developing countries. The overall aims of this thesis are to investigate the links between social capital and HIV infection and to contribute to the theoretical framework of the role of social capital for HIV prevention. Methods Key informant interviews with leaders of organizations, networks, social groups and communities and focus group discussions with members and non-members of the social groups and networks were conducted to map out and characterize various forms of social capital that may influenceHIV prevention. A quantitative community survey was carried out in three case communities toestimate the influence of social capital on HIV risk behaviors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to estimate the HIV prevalence in the urban district representing a high HIV prevalence zone to determine the association between social capital and HIV infection. Main findings In early 1990’s many of the social groups in Kagera region were formed because of poverty and many AIDS related deaths. This formation of groups enhanced people’s social and economic support to group members during bereavement and celebrations as well as provided loans that empowered members economically. The social groups also put in place strict rules of conduct, which helped to create new norms, values and trust, which influenced sexual health andthereby enhanced HIV prevention. Formal organizations worked together with social groups and facilitated networking and provided avenues for exchange of information including healtheducation on HIV/AIDS. Individuals who had access to high levels of structural and cognitive social capital were more likely to use condoms with their casual sex partners compared to individuals with access to low levels. Women with access to high levels of structural social capital were more likely to use condoms with casual sex partners compared to those with low levels. Individuals with access to low levels of structural social capital were less likely to be tested for HIV compared to those with access to high levels. However, there was no association between access to cognitive social capital and being tested for HIV. Individuals who had access to low levels of both structural and cognitive social capital were more likely to be HIV positive compared to individuals who had access to high levels with a similar pattern among men and women. Conclusion This thesis indicates that social capital in its structural and cognitive forms is protective to HIV infection and has played an important role in the observed decline in HIV trends in the Kagera region. Structural and cognitive social capital has enabled community members to decrease number of sexual partners, delay sexual debut for the young generation, reduce opportunities for casual sex and empower community members to demand or use condoms. It is recommended that policy makers and programme managers consider involving grassroots’ social groups and networks in the design and delivery of interventions strategies to reduce HIV transmission.

Abstract:
The Kagera basin in East Africa has experienced major land surface loss in tropical forests, woodlands, and savannas due to the conversion of land for agricultural purposes. This has resulted in soil degradation, siltation, eutrophication, desertification, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Damages in the Kagera have also led to pollution and sedimentation in Victoria Lake which receives water from the basin. These environmental changes have an effect on people in this region who largely depend on the natural resources. It has been indicated that these problems are mainly due to population growth as this region has the highest population growth and density when compared to sub-Saharan countries. However, previous studies conducted in this region have not investigated the spatial relationship between population growth and LULC changes. The aim of this study was to quantify LULC changes that occurred from 1984 to 2011, and predict future scenarios. Another goal of this study was to investigate the spatial relationship between population growth/density and LULC changes, and its socioeconomic influences. A post classification change detection method and Markov chain model of LULC change were used to analyze the past and future LULC dynamics. Administrative level census data of Kagera was used to calculate population growth and density, and these were overlaid to LULC change. The assessment of change for the period of 1984-2011 overall showed a major expansion of agriculture at the expense of woodland savanna. This was mainly attributed to demographic and socioeconomic/political changes prior to and during the study period. Population growth and density were linked to transitions to agriculture, and agriculture dominance during the study period. In addition, the oil price shocks of the 1970's that led to the adoption of Structural Adjustment Program were implicated as the major global macroeconomic influence in the use of resources, mainly in the agriculture sector. Internal policies such as Tanzania's "Ujama" villagization of production, and biophysical factors such as precipitation and proximity to water bodies were also implicated to the LULC changes. The findings in this study imply that understanding inter-relationship of factors is critically important, and the issue of LULC change must be approached in a holistic manner.

Suuna, Micheal. "Descriptive study of maternal outcomes in a near-miss cohort at Kagadi District Hospital, Uganda." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/23747.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: An understanding of pregnancy related morbidity (obstetric near miss) provides valuable information that can be used in reduction of maternal mortality. This study aims to (i) Describe the prevalence and short term outcomes of obstetric near misses (ii) Evaluate the level of care through comparative analysis of obstetric near misses and maternal mortality in Kagadi district hospital, Uganda Methods: A facility based retrospective review of obstetric near miss cases and maternal deaths that occurred between 1st January 2015 and 31st December 2015. Obstetric near miss case definition was based on disease-specific criteria including: haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, dystocia, infection and anaemia. Main outcome measures included the frequency of near-miss in each disease specific group, duration of hospital stay and maternal death. Secondary outcome measures included distribution of referral categories, caesarean section rate, hysterectomy and foetal outcomes measures i.e live births, still births, abortions, neonatal deaths. A comparative analysis of obstetric near miss and maternal mortality was done to determine the maternal near miss incidence ratio (MNMR), maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and Mortality indices. The maternal near miss to mortality ratio for the period of study was calculated. Results: There were 7169 admissions to the maternity ward with 4366 deliveries, 752 near misses and 12 maternal deaths. The prevalence of maternal near misses was 10.7%. Maternal near miss and maternal mortality ratio were 177.1 per 1000 and 282 per 100,000 live births respectively. The near miss to mortality ratio was 63:1. Dystocia (69.3%) was the most common near miss event, followed by haemorrhage (19.5%), infection (5.2%), anaemia (4.5%) and hypertension (1.5%). The mortality indices were 27.3%, 4.1%, 2.9%, 2.5% and 0.2% for hypertension, haemorrhage, anaemia, infection and dystocia respectively. Most complications developed at home (46.7%) while 36.5% and 16.5% occurred at the study site and other public facilities respectively. The mean duration of hospital stay was 3.6 days. The caesarean section rate was 12% of all hospital deliveries and 6 near misses had hysterectomy. Foetal outcomes were 78.4%, 14.2%, 5.6% and 1.8% for live births, abortions, fresh still births and neonatal deaths respectively. Conclusion: There is a high occurrence of near miss events at the health facility. Dystocia is the leading cause of obstetric near miss but hypertension and haemorrhage are associated with poor maternal outcome. Although most obstetric complications develop at home, a comparative analysis of morbidity and mortality at the health facility shows substandard care. In order to improve the quality of care there is need for advocacy for hospital delivery, development evidence management based protocols and routine audit of near miss.

Abstract:
In his book The Limits of Morality, Shelly Kagan claims that contractarian approaches to ethics are incompatible with our common, everyday, "moderate" morality. In this thesis I defend a version of contractarianism that I believe leads to both deontological constraints and options; i.e., to a genuinely moderate morality. On my account, the parties to the agreement are conceived of as being motivated not only to promote self-interest, but also to formulate a code of ethics that gives proper respect to their moral status as persons. If such a picture of the bargainers' motivations is defensible, as I believe it is, then the 'moderate' may in fact have recourse to contractarianism in her defense of everyday morality, for - as my thesis argues - bargainers that are thus motivated will arrive at a moderate morality.

Abstract:
Vegetarian and vegan diets are becoming more common in Sweden. Many dismiss meat and dairy products due to environmental aspects and also in favor of animal rights. Human rights is a topic often discussed in politics, in school and at universities. The relationship between animal rights and human rights however are not discussed to the same extent, and how we envision that relationship varies greatly between different people. I believe that there are few who think that other species than humans are completely morally insignificant but the vast majority of people however probably believe that we humans are, in the eyes of morality, at least more important. I imagine there are few who have considered how the relationship between human and animal rights look in great detail and with this essay I hope that we can get a clearer picture of that relationship.

Abstract:

Kenge, James Gunya. "Participatory watershed management to decrease land degradation and sediment transport in Kagera and Nyando catchments of Lake Victoria basin." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Water and Environmental Studies, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-51952.

Full text
Abstract:

Attention to participatory watershed management is increasing across the developing world as soil erosion continues to degrade agricultural land; reservoirs and irrigation infrastructure are clogged with sediment. The realization of the importance of watersheds is crucial for sustainable utilization especially in developing countries where rural livelihoods and economies are highly dependant on the exploitation of natural resources. The Lake Victoria basin is characterized by high population pressures, low productive subsistence agriculture, poor farming methods, loss of soil fertility and deforestation due to demand of fuel wood and charcoal, timber and building materials that are posing serious threat to watersheds. High population density in the basin also means new needs emerge too fast to which rural societies cannot respond in time leading to more area expansion for agricultural land. In spite of positive efforts under the Lake Victoria Basin Commission, there remains a huge gap between policy and institutional framework development at the top level and the actual implementation of actions on the ground to prevent land degradation, soil erosion and decrease sediment load. The study focused on Kagera and Nyando catchments of Lake Victoria Basin and aiming to establish if there exist and the extent to which participatory watershed management has been implemented on the ground to decrease land degradation and sediment load. It therefore provides an insight into watershed management in the Kagera and Nyando catchments by illustrating the link between policy formulation and actual implementation and enforcement.

Fransson, Helena, and Madeleine Karlsson. ""With the Strength of a Group" : A Minor Field Study of Small-Scale Farmers’ Socio-Economic Situation in Kagera, Tanzania." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för samhällsvetenskaper, SV, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-10566.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is based on a minor field study conducted in Kagera, Tanzania, during approximately two months in 2009. In the Kagera region, agriculture is seen as the main dependent factor for the small-scale farmers' livelihoods, which is an activity challenged by environmental constraints including soil degradation and deforestation. The non-governmental organisation Vi Agroforestry has been active in Kagera since 2005, focusing on the re-establishment of a healthy and sustainable environment, while simultaneously trying to reduce the levels of poverty and food insecurity through rural-based agroforestry techniques and enterprise development. Its work is implemented with a demand-driven group approach and the small-scale farmers' self-reliance as a key element. The purpose of the field study was to investigate the socio-economic situation for small-scale farmers in Kagera and how it possibly had changed over time as well as in what ways Vi Agroforestry so far might had affected the farmers' situation. The possible diverse development between farmers that were members in groups collaborating with the organisation and non-members was also investigated. During the field study semi-structured interviews signified the main source of information and the material gathered was analysed according to the capital assets of the pentagon of the sustainable rural livelihood framework. Overall, even though the small-scale farmers still seemed to face challenges in their daily lives when this study was conducted, the general impression was that their socio-economic situation had improved over time and that Vi Agroforestry had constituted a contributing engine for this development. The main contributions by the organisation in this regard seemed to have been the education and training in agriculture and agroforestry techniques, enterprise development and micro savings and loans. Due to an apparent small-scale development with a diverse focus among the farmers on improving different capitals, as well as insufficient data on how the farmers' situation was before the organisation's arrival, no prominent differences seemed evident between the farmers who were members of groups collaborating with Vi Agroforetry and non-members.

Abstract:

HRQOL of HAART recipients at the Kagera region hospital was generally lower than that of the general population. However, their general health perceptions and mental health status were comparable to those of the general population, suggesting effectiveness of HAART in improving some subjective experiences of HIV morbidity. Chronic diseases were the main factor negatively affecting HRQOL of recipients.

Jakobsson, Rebecka. Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Logopedi, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-141676.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to develop an understanding of and describe how teachers in government owned primary schools in Tanzania work with students with reading and writing difficulties. This study aims to find out what conditions primary school teachers have to help students with reading and writing difficulties and how primary school teachers work to reach the fourth global goal. The fourth global goal is a part of Agenda 2030 which means to ensure that all children should learn how to read, write and count before the year 2030. The research method that is being used in this study is semi-structured interviews with 9 primary school teachers and questionnaires answered by 18 primary school teachers. Most of the teachers that participate in this study are working in the regions of Kagera and Dar es Salaam. The data that is being collected from the interviews is analyzed by a thematic analysis. The questionnaires are analyzed by using both a thematic analysis and univariate analysis. The result shows that the teachers have limited conditions to help students with reading and writing difficulties. For example, they have a large number of students and limited resources. The result also shows that the teachers sometimes support students with reading and writing difficulties individually but that it is more common to teach all of the students at once. Finally, the result shows that teachers’ conditions and their working methods have consequences for the students with reading and writing difficulties. For example, the students cannot continue to secondary school, they get psychological problems and there is a risk that the students will face unemployment and poverty. In the long run this may cause a global consequence; that Agenda 2030 will probably not be accomplished.
