Abstract:
... The working groups contained more than 1000 participants, not 511, as claimed by the Task Force. Nearly half of the members were private citizens. Large numbers worked for managed-care interests, most notably the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. Both foundations have supported managed-care reform in several states. In addition, six members the White House passed off as Congressional staffers turned out to be Robert Wood Johnson fellows assigned to the staffs of four Democratic Senators; all were on the foundation's payroll. Dozens of other private interests were represented in the working groups—Aetna, Prudential, Kaiser-Permanente, health czar Ira Magaziner's former consulting company Telesis, to name a few. Conspicuously absent were physicians in private practice. The Task Force spent at least $4 million and possibly as much as $16 million on expenses, salaries, and consulting fees. In the charter it filed with the GSA in March 1993, the Task Force said expenses would total $100 000.

This article examines the use of the Internet for gathering health information by boomers and seniors. This study attempts to determine whether online health seekers (individuals that have Internet access and have searched for health information online) have changed their behaviors from the information they found online. Essentially, has online health information helped them to manage their health more effectively? This research analyzes the Kaiser Family Foundation e-Health and the Elderly public opinion dataset of access by boomers and seniors to online health information. The major results indicate that boomers marginally use online health information more than seniors for the management of their health. The most significant results indicated that boomers and seniors who are more aware and have positive feelings toward online health information would use it more to manage their health.

Abstract:
This chapter assesses how the effects of Hurricane Harvey in August of 2017 were especially painful for immigrant families, many of whom feared that reporting property damage and losses caused by the storm would draw negative attention from governmental authorities. The Kaiser Family Foundation published survey findings on the impact of Harvey on immigrants living along the Texas Gulf Coast. The findings show that immigrants with homes hit by Harvey reported feeling more worried about seeking help for storm-related damages than their native-born counterparts. About 34% of immigrants responded that they were very worried that reaching out for help would highlight their own or a family member’s status. Immigrants were also less likely to have flood or home insurance, or to apply for governmental disaster assistance. Notably, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s policies do not guarantee Disaster Unemployment Assistance to undocumented individuals. For these reasons, fear of disclosing immigration status may act as a barrier to immigrants seeking help and to broader efforts to ameliorate storm damage and safeguard health in the wake of natural disasters.

Abstract:
It has been over a year since the first laboratory-confirmed case of the Coronavirus -19 disease (COVID-19) was detected in the United States. Since then, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, there have been over 31, 023,000 citizens diagnosed with the disease, resulting in over 560,315 deaths. Although the rate of citizens being diagnosed with the virus as well as the number of deaths has slowed down since the use of the vaccine, there are still concerns regarding sections of communities and various minority groups who are resistant to obtaining the vaccines. Vaccines first became available in November 2020 in response to this pandemic, but distribution issues and problems with compliance soon became evident and demonstrated an extreme gap in health disparities. As of March 31, 2021, the Kaiser Family Foundation reported that in the District of Columbia, African Americans (AA) make up 46% of the population but 45% of the infected cases as compared to whites who make up 31% of the population but only 26% of the infected cases. Anecdotally, it has been reported that AA nurses are hesitant to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine for a variety of reasons, including fear and mistrust of the medical community. The purpose of this pilot study was to survey a small group of AA nurses to refine a tool that will be used to obtain information on factors contributing to their hesitancy to obtain the COVID-19 vaccination. A secondary purpose is to create educational tools that would be effective in developing messages targeting the concerns of African American nurses.
