"Comparative root transcriptome analysis of two soybean cultivars with different cadmium sensitivities reveals the underlying tolerance mechanisms." Genome 65, no. 1 (January 2022): 27–42. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/gen-2021-0048.

Abstract:
Soybean can provide rich protein and fat and has great economic value worldwide. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal to organisms. It can accumulate in plants and be transmitted to the human body via the food chain. Cd is a serious threat to soybean development, particularly root growth. Some soybean cultivars present tolerant symptoms under Cd stress; however, the potential mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we optimized RNA-seq to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in Cd-sensitive (KUAI) and Cd-tolerant (KAIYU) soybean roots and compared the DEGs between KAIYU and KUAI. A total of 1506 and 1870 DEGs were identified in the roots of KUAI and KAIYU, respectively. Through Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway, and gene function analyses, we found that genes related to antioxidants and sequestration were responsible for Cd tolerance in KAIYU. In addition, overexpression of Glyma11g02661, which encodes a heavy metal-transporting ATPase, significantly improved Cd tolerance in transgenic hairy roots. These results provide a preliminary understanding of the tolerance mechanisms in response to Cd stress in soybean root development and are of great importance in developing Cd-resistant soybean cultivars by using the identified DEGs through genetic modification.

Abstract:
AbstractObjectives:Two cases of traditional kaiy (Arabic for cauterisation) therapy for pain are reported. This technique is unknown in western countries and should be banned following a review of the topic.Case reports:Many patients in developing countries use alternative, complementary or traditional therapies before seeking medical advice. This may be due to social or religious beliefs. Kaiy is one such traditional therapy which should be discouraged. Two cases are reported, the first with aural pain and the second with thyroid pain (with malignancy later diagnosed). Conclusion:In these days of modern health care, the practice of kaiy is not science-based and is associated with considerable health risks. Health authorities in the relevant societies should move towards banning this undesirable practice; they should also use multi-media health education to advise of its dangerous outcomes, and enlist the help of community religious leaders to change public opinion and belief.

Abstract:
In the study of folklore of great interest is folk heroic epic, as the bearer of traditional culture and national ideology. In this case the object of research are the religious and mythological motifs of the Kyrgyz heroic epic Manas. In particular, the author focuses on the concept of kaiyp. The main purpose of this study is to determine the meaning of kaiyp materials versions S. Orozbakov, S. Karalaev, M. Chokmorov and S. Azizov. The scientific novelty of this article lies in the fact that it is one of the first works exploring the concept of kaiyp as religious and mythological motif of the epic Manas. The author tries to reveal all the meanings of the concept of kaiyp in the epic Manas, and to determine their role in the epic tradition. Thus, he finds several meanings of the concept. In the first case, it is the world of the fairies, Cyclops, protective spirits, giants, is a special world the world Kaiyps, they can enter the world of the living and otherwise Express themselves. In the second case, is the name of the inhabitants of this world. In the third case, a cave which is the resting place between the living world and the world kajyps, in the epic it is called black cave Kaiyps. In addition, in the third part of the epic Seitek, tells the story of how five people closest to Manas: the adviser and a cousin of Manas, Bakai, the wife of Manas Kanikey, the son of Manas Semetey, wife of semetei of Aichurek, the son of a close associate of Manas Gulchoro voluntarily leave the human world and go into the world Kaiyps. The author also examines the relation between the Kyrgyz epic performance of kaiyp with the Islamic religious view of a latent condition. This material is just the beginning of a new research in the study of religious and mythological ideas about kaiyp. Hoping for further investigation of this matter, it intends to turn its attention to other Kyrgyz epics and folk genres, which will be able to expand the understanding of the concept of kaiyp.

Abstract:
Since the establishment of JAMSTEC in 1971, several basic and advanced survey systems have been developed to exploit and study the deep ocean. Presently, 4000-m and 6000-m deep tow systems, 2000-m and 6000-m manned submersibles, 3000-m, 7000-m and 10000-m ROVs, and cabled deep seafloor observatories are in operation. A deep and long range AUV to survey under the ice or hazardous environment, and a wire line reentry system to study crustal deformation process are under development. In addition to the above survey systems, the five-vessel JAMSTEC fleet, R/V Natsushima, Kaiyo, Yokosuka, Kairei and Mirai supports research activities in all of the world’s oceans. The operating principle for research at JAMSTEC in the next decade is “in depth understanding of the Earth and life”.We will further expand research activities by utilizing basic and advanced systems, and deep ocean technology to achieve the above goal.

Abstract:
Postwar writings by and about Japanese repatriates often serve to illustrate the incomplete nature of Japanese decolonization. While the process of repatriation physically removed Japanese colonists from the former empire, it also deferred the necessary process of coming to terms with Japan’s imperial past. This article examines how unresolved memories of empire reemerge in the postwar writings of Kobayashi Masaru (1927–1971), a Japanese author who was born and raised in colonial Korea. Through an analysis of Kobayashi’s Akutagawa Prize-nominated short story “Bridge Building” (“Kakyō,” 1960), set in Japan during the Korean War, it shows that although Kobayashi depicts Japanese and Korean characters who are united by a common goal and their past experiences of imperial violence, the gap between them remains insurmountable. The article contends that Kobayashi’s work represents an attempt to counteract romanticized repatriation narratives that had been coopted for new nationalist ends at the beginning of the Cold War.

Abstract:
Miho Hamaguchi (1915-1988) was the first woman to be a licensed architect in Japan. A pioneer in domestic design during the postwar period, she built and consulted on thousands of houses throughout her prolific career. However, she is a little-known figure both in Japan and in the international debate. Her representation in architectural historiography is limited to her influence on kitchen design, but her writings and work go far beyond. Hamaguchi's legacy is one of bold residential architecture that embodied democratic ideas in spatial configurations. She promoted the house as a fundamental tool for gender equality, leaving behind a feudal and patriarchal system. At the end of her career, she found in Costa del Sol the perfect place to carry out a residential project as a cultural exchange. "Kaiyo Club" became a set of three houses since the first design in 1974 until the subsequent extensions were completed in 1987. Throughout its different stages, the project shows a striking Spanish-Japanese transfer where different architectural languages coexist. The white-walled exterior dialogues with the vernacular, while its interior unfolds Japanese patterns with tatami-floored rooms or ofuro-style bathrooms. These dwellings present a unique hybrid materialization, displaying Hamaguchi's design from a humanistic stance, blending of locally rooted modernist spatial principles and reinterpreted traditions.

Abstract:
A 3-week feeding trial in a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design was conducted with three concentrations (0, 0.5, and 5 mg/kg) of T-2 toxin (T-2) and two levels (0% and 0.5%) of green tea powder (GTP) supplements used in the diets of female brown Tsaiya ducklings (BTDs) and Kaiya ducklings (KDs), respectively. Breed had a significant effect on the growth performances and the relative weights of organs and carcass. In general, the growth performances of KDs were better than BTDs. The relative weights of organs and carcass of BTDs were typically heavier than those of KDs; however, the breast of KDs was heavier than those of BTDs. Both ducklings received 5 mg/kg of T-2 blended in the diet showed lower feed intake and body weight gain (BWG) in the second and the third week. The diet containing 5 mg/kg of T-2 and 0.5% GTP improved the BWG compared to those fed the diet supplemented with 5 mg/kg of T-2 without GTP in BTDs. Ducklings fed the diet containing 5 mg/kg of T-2 induced hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia, as well as decreased concentrations of creatine phosphokinase and alkaline phosphatase. The concentrations of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) were increased in KDs and BTDs fed the diet containing 5 mg/kg of T-2 without GTP, respectively. However, duckling diets containing 5 mg/kg of T-2 with 0.5% GTP lowered concentrations of BUN and GOT in the blood plasma of KDs and BTDs, respectively. The diet containing 5 mg/kg of T-2 increased the relative kidney weight but decreased the relative breast weight of ducklings. Enlarged gizzards and reduced relative leg weights were observed in BTDs fed the diets containing 5 mg/kg of T-2. In summary, BTDs are more sensitive than KDs in responding to T-2 toxicity and GTP detoxification. Green tea powder has detoxification ability and could potentially mitigate T-2 toxicity on BWG, BUN, and GOT in ducklings.

Abstract. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) profile retrievals were performed by ship-borne Multi-Axis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) using a compact/low-power spectrometer on the Japanese research vessel Kaiyo during two ocean cruises around Japan and Japan-Bali (Indonesia)-Indian Ocean. DOAS analysis using a 425–450 nm fitting window revealed a clear land–ocean contrast in NO2 differential slant column densities (DSCDs) but poor fitting results and negative values, especially at low elevation angles at low latitudes (< ~20° N). The poor fitting resulted in sparse NO2 volume mixing ratio (VMR) data for the 0–1 km layer after applying our vertical profile retrieval method. In contrast, NO2 VMRs retrieved using fitting results from 460–490 nm are positive even at low latitudes, while they are reasonably similar to those obtained from 425–450 nm at mid-latitudes. Because NO2 DSCD for 425–450 nm shows a negative correlation with water vapor (H2O) DSCD, the poor fitting appears to be due primarily to interference by H2O. We analyzed a 338–370 nm fitting window, which is free from H2O, and found good agreement between NO2 VMRs retrieved from 460–490 nm and 338–370 nm, even at low latitudes, at NO2 VMRs higher than ~0.2 ppbv. The results indicate that the background value of NO2 VMR over the western Pacific and Indian Ocean during the cruises was less than ~0.2 ppbv, with occasional enhancement to levels of ~0.2–0.4 ppbv.

Abstract:
The Regional Museum of Toruń has in its Far East Collection a woodblock print – a portrait of kabuki actor Matsumoto Kōshirō V by Utagawa Kunisada. This print falls into the shini-e (“death print”) category, commemorating the death of an actor, artist, or musician. The vast majority of shini-e depicted actors. Typical shini-e portrayed memorialized persons in blue court robes called shini sōzoku (“death dresses”) or ceremonial attire called mizu kamishimo. Many of these prints included the dates of death, age, posthumous Buddhist name (kaimyō), and temple burial site, while some had death poems (jisei) by the deceased or memorial poems written by family, friends, colleagues, or fans. A term used at least by the 1850s. The first datable single-sheet shini-e were probably issued in the 1790s, although ehon (“picture books”) commemorating the deaths of celebrated actors appeared as early as 1709, and more regularly by the 1770s. The shini-e genre appears to have nearly disappeared by the beginning of the 20th century and with the rise of other media such as photography and lithography, shini-e were no longer viable options for memorializing actors and artists. Only a small handful of examples are known from the 1910s–1920s. Matsumoto Kōshirō V was the one of many kabuki actors, who were display on shini-e. Besides actors, the ukiyo-e artist where also portrayed on commemorate prints.

Rats were randomly divided into six groups: control group, CUMS group, CUMS+XPKYF (3.6g/kg/d, 7.2g/kg/d, 14.4g/kg/d) groups, and CUMS+sertraline (4.5mg/kg/d) group. The sucrose preference test and the forced swimming test were performed to assess the rats’ depression behavior. Mitochondrial ultrastructure was observed by transmission electron microscope and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, sodium potassium ATPase (Na/K-ATPase) activity, and mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes activities in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle were measured at the 14th and 42nd day. Results. Rats subjected to six weeks of CUMS exhibited decreased sucrose preference ratio and prolonged immobility time. CUMS reduced ATP content in hippocampus, decreased Na/K-ATPase activity and respiratory chain complex I, III, and IV activities in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle, and damaged mitochondrial ultrastructure of hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle. XPKYF at 14.4g/kg, the efficacy trend of which was better than the other drug groups, could prevent the stress-induced depressed behavior changes, inhibit the decrease of Na/K-ATPase activity in hippocampus, inhibit the decrease of respiratory chain complex III activities in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle, and protect mitochondria from ultrastructural damage. Conclusions. Energy deficiency and damaged mitochondrial ultrastructure were found in hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle of depressed rats established by CUMS. XPKYF could partly reverse alterations in ATP, Na/K-ATPase, and respiratory chain complexes of hippocampus and gastrocnemius muscle and protect mitochondria from ultrastructural damage. This provides another experimental evidence for the clinical application of XPKYF in the treatment of depression.

Abstract:
The Lombok Strait, as one of the outlet straits, is part of the ITF route, which is directly adjacent to the Indian Ocean. There is a sill in the Lombok Strait, which is a place for internal wave generation. Leg-1 data from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology in collaboration with the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology which is part of the Tropical Ocean Climate Study Expedition including CTD Yoyo and ADCP taken using ship vehicles R/V Kaiyo. CTD Snapshot from PUSHIDROSAL using the KRI Spica 934 vehicle part of the Opssurta Baruna Jaya 2 Expedition. Determination of seawater mass stratification with the criteria for the thermocline layer is ≥ 0.05 °C.m-1. Four types of water masses were identified, Java Sea, mixed seawater mass (Java Sea - ITF) which occurred diapycnal mixing, North Pacific Subtropical Water (NPSW) and North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW). The seawater mass stratification in the Lombok Strait based on temperature, salinity and density which are seen to follow the internal tidal pattern. The average values for energy dissipation and vertical diffusivity for each layer and replication were 5.73 x 10-7 W.Kg-1 and 3.67 x 10-2 m2.s-1 for CTD Yoyo and 2.25 x 10-6 W.Kg-1 and 7.38 x 10-2 m2.s-1 for CTD Snapshot. The value obtained is greater than the open ocean and straits in other studies. The high shear value confirms this in the thermocline layer. The Richardson gradient value> 0.25 is relatively constant in the thermocline layer.

Abstract:
The prevalence of low back pain (LBP) is increasing exponentially, with this public health issue affecting over 70% of the population. However, sedentary careers exacerbate the problem further, with professions such as teaching disproportionately affected. In addition, the general population does not seek interventions from medical professionals for LBP; instead, they opt to manage their pain with over-the-counter medications, such as sedatives. The purpose of this study was to explore practices and beliefs related to back pain treatment among schoolteachers in the Asir region. This cross-sectional study included a sample of 312 teachers from the Asir region, with data collected regarding the prevalence of back pain, management approaches, and beliefs surrounding medical interventions. Chi-square or exact tests defined the association between variables, with significance determined at p < 0.05. Our results revealed that 67.3% of Saudi Arabian teachers experienced LBP within the last two months, with a continuous condition representing 36.7% of cases. This study identified several different treatment modalities the participants use to manage their pain, including sedatives, best rest, kaiy (traditional cautery), and local adhesives, with sedatives being the most employed method. It also highlighted that increased daily working hours and total days worked significantly increased the prevalence of LBP (p < 0.05). Although a considerable number of the included teachers were highly educated, with some teaching experience, they had a poor level of awareness and an incorrect attitude towards pain management. Enhanced efforts should be made to improve teachers’ awareness regarding back pain causes and management methods.

Abstract:
The researches of Turkic history were formed within the framework of world historical thought. It should be noted that Turkish civilization had its own peculiarities when the predominance of Eurocentrism concepts is taken into consideration while structuring world history content. The purpose of such study is not to distinguish Turkic history from world history, but to focus on the true history content of the Turkic peoples formed in it. The main goal of this paper is to determine the historical background of Kazakh-Turkish political and cultural ties. The scientific importance of the data bases of kinship relations, which began in the Middle Ages, has special significance in determining the direction of modern Kazakh-Turkish relations formed during independence years. It is known that the Republic of Turkey is one of the countries with which the Republic of Kazakhstan has established the closest integration during independence years. This paper analyzes the sources of early history of Kazakh-Turkish relations. Conclusions were drawn analyzing the archival data about historical background of friendship and strategic partnership between two countries. One of the important terms for the scientific reconsideration of the history of Kazakh-Turkish political and cultural relations is the value of scientific sources complex. Sources containing scientific, objective information and data are the main means of interpreting historical events and phenomena, as well as restoring the content of history. At present time, evidence of Kazakh-Turkish relations has been found in the archives of Turkey and is being submitted for scientific circulation. It requires thematic, chronological and genre grouping of data. Among these sources there are archival and diplomatic documents on the subject, the Kazakh Khanate in chronology, the genre between the Kazakh Khanate and the Ottoman Empire. After all, these data obtain scientific significance as a starting point for Kazakh-Turkish political and cultural ties. The embassy of Kaiyp Khan Taukeuly to Ottoman Sultan Akhmet III is the basis of modern political relations between these two countries. This paper analyzes the fact that this first diplomatic relationship was followed by Kazakh-Turkish political ties. Evidence suggests that during the disintegration of the Kazakh Khanate and the modernization of the Russian Empire, the colonial power continued to disrupt relations between two countries. In particular, this connection continued in the religious-spiritual and cultural-educational directions through the informal political, religious-educational activities of individual historical figures. The article analyzes a number of archival and press data and presents them for scientific circulation

Abstract:
White wings, long hair, 'pure' faces: the appearance of angels frequently follows similar aesthetics connected to Christian imagery. Angels and Christian religion also are popular themes in manga, Japanese comics, often intermingled with Buddhist or Shinto notions. Since imagery in popular culture resonates and shapes vernacular and cultural perspectives, manga like Kamikaze Kaitō Jeanne (KKJ) provide an important insight into the conceptualization of angels in Japan. This article therefore analyzes the contrary role of angels in KKJ as the Other, the mysterious, serene one, while simultaneously angels are depicted as part of the circle of life every creature undergoes in Buddhist cosmology. Based on a visual hermeneutic approach, this article demonstrates how the intermix of both visual and religious traditions in Japan shape the depiction of angels in Japanese popcultural media.
