Abstract:
Purpose: The study was an assessment of factors affecting the growth of SMEs in the case of SMEs in Kajiado District.Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive case study design. A sample of 42 SMEs was taken out of a population of 420 SMEs. This represented 10% of the population. Systematic random sampling was used to select the actual SMEs to be included in the sample. A questionnaire was the preferred data collection tool. It contained both open and close ended questions. A Likert scale was used to establish the extent to which respondents agree or disagree with research questions. The data was analyzed by the use of descriptive statistics such as mean mode, medians, and percentages. The findings of the study were presented using tables and graphs and bar charts. Results: Findings in this study indicated that that the generic causes of SME failure in Kajiado District were access to finance, competition, technology, regulatory framework. The root causes of SME failure in Kajiado District were management incompetence and poor working capital management. The study also concluded that the root and generic causes identified in ILO (1972) are still persistent despite efforts by policy makers to address the causes.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: It was recommended that the financial institutions and microfinance institutions offering finance should also offer training on working capital management to SMEs. The ministry of labor in a joint effort with the ministry of education should engage both private firms and NGOs in rolling out training services through e-learning with the support of emerging technologies such as internet and computers. It was also recommended that SMEs should increase their uptake of technologies in order to improve on their product quality. The ministry for justice should address the issues surrounding the poor regulatory framework by ensuring that the backlog of court cases is addressed. Emphasis should be laid on the value addition of products and the development of local, regional and international markets. The credit reference bureaus is a welcome move in addressing the information asymmetry brought about by the inherent moral hazard and adverse selection in SMEs.

Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between property rights, resource degradation, and productivity among herders in semi-arid regions of Kenya using survey data. Binary and conditional logit models are used to explain migration, while ordinary least squares and fixed effects models are used to explain productivity. The main findings of the study are that private property right regimes discourage migration with livestock, while private property right regimes and migration increase productivity. The study recommends that if privatization is not feasible, then the existing common rights system should be strengthened through promotion of collective action and limiting of group sizes.

Abstract:
This paper examines the response of herders to increased shortage and degradation of land in an arid and semi-arid land setting in Kenya, under changing property right regimes using both survey and secondary data. We argue that the responses adopted are livelihood strategies to improve herder's welfare. We explore the determinants of three different strategies: crop cultivation, investment in land improvements, and migration with livestock. We employ the probit regression framework to explain each strategy. The main findings of the study are that private property rights, educational attainment, and availability of water are major determinants of the three strategies. We recommend policies that favour privatization of existing common property resources, improve education levels, and increase supply of water in the district.

Abstract:
The goal of this study was to further understanding of the ecology and propagation of an important wild food resource (Vatovaea pseudolablab (Harms.) Gillett of the community of Loodokilani, Kajiado District Kenya and by extension, contribute to its sustainable use.
Vatovaea pseudolablab is found in occasional, yet distinct patches in Lookidalani and these patches may be associated with a particular soil-water regime. The associated soils are moderately developed, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2, Munsell) clayloams, with small (5.61 mm), angular blocky aggregates. The patches were moderately covered (30%) with medium-sized stones (9.5 cm).
Woody and leafy cuttings from wild stock were collected and rooted easily using a minimum of technological inputs. Roofing percentages were better under the hotter and drier conditions in Kilinito.
In conclusion, the data gathered for this study were analyzed within the framework developed by Amold et al. (1985) for evaluating sustainable use strategies for indigenous plants. The low densities of V. pseudolablab found within the patches coupled with the high grazing pressure make it unlikely that wild resources could sustain higher usage.
This study highlights some of the greatest methodological problems facing ethnobotanical, and related, research in pastoral communities. More attention should be directed towards developing research methodologies to further our understanding of wild food plants in pastoral communities.

Abstract:
Countries in the developing world, in attempts to promote investment in land and agricultural productivity, and to establish frameworks for economic development, have regularly embarked on extensive tenure reforms designed to replace customary forms of tenure with private individual forms. In the Kenya rangelands, the Group Ranch system: a hybrid tenure system that allows communal ownership and use of titled land, was created and implemented in the rangelands where private tenure was thought to be unsuitable. This thesis discusses the failure of the Group Ranch system in Kajiado District, and the parallel transformation of Maasai communal lands into private, individual holdings, which has eroded land security, facilitated land loss to non-residents, created local socio-economic disparities, and made difficult the sustainable practice of pastoral livelihoods. From this discussion it is suggested that communal tenure systems may be useful in preventing and addressing land and resource related problems, and that tailoring land policies and tenure reforms to clarify and strengthen customary systems can play a significant role in promoting land conservation and productivity in the African rangelands and enhance security for the people that depend on them.

Wangui, Parsaloi Mary. "The lived experiences of female head teachers in rural primary schools in Kenya." Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/6107.

Full text
Abstract:
The under-representation of women in positions of leadership in primary schools is common in many developing countries, raising issues of equity, social justice and sustainable development. Studies on gender and leadership have revealed that a number of barriers existed for women seeking positions of educational leadership. This includes social-cultural factors, the expectations of the society, as well as women’s perceptions of themselves, and of leadership. This study was concerned with the representation of women in leadership positions in Kenya’s rural primary schools. In particular, it explored the educational leadership experiences of women working in schools in the rural areas within Kajiado County. It sought strategies to enhance the participation of women in leadership roles in rural primary schools. The data were primarily gathered by means of qualitative methods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen female head teachers drawn from public primary schools. Unstructured observation was done during visits to the schools, and during the interviews, field-notes were taken. The women gave rich descriptions of the various aspects of their work-lives within the context of sharing the challenges and strengths experienced in their careers. Secondary data were gathered by means of research, where the researcher reviewed the existing literature on women and leadership. The data that were collected were analyzed, categorized, synthesized and interpreted. The findings were presented in rich descriptions, which also included anecdotes from the participants. The key findings revealed administrative challenges, which included the grievances of the parents, limited resources, issues with accountability, time-management and the handling of difficult teachers. Personal challenges included wavering self-confidence, problems with trying to balance work and social lives, as well as home-work conflicts. The findings revealed the participants’ inadequate preparation for their leadership roles, and society’s initial skepticism on women’s school leadership. The study also revealed women’s reluctance to take up leadership positions, as was evidenced by their reluctance in applying for the positions. The study found that the participation of women in primary school leadership positions could be enhanced by means of attractive remuneration, effective mentoring, positive role-models, programmes for the preparation for leadership, and the assurance of limited geographical movement on promotion.
