Tropical forests are amongst the most important ecosystems in the world. It is also the biome estimated to experience the most rapid losses of habitats in the next 50 years, mainly due to anthropogenic exploitation. The Kakamega forest, western Kenya, is important both for conservation and human livelihood and is essential for peoples’ survival. The main threat to the forest’s subsistence is collection of firewood used for cooking. Energy-efficient cookstoves, with almost 50 % lower demand for firewood compared to traditional 3-stone-stoves, have been installed to ease the pressure on the fore

Kenya is at the forefront of a socioeconomic transformation, aiming to turn into an industrialized middle income country by 2030. Kenya Vision 2030 has identified energy as a key foundation and one of the infrastructural “enablers” upon which the economic, social and political pillars of this long-term development strategy will be built. Predicting the future of energy systems however, involves risks due to various uncertainties. Therefore, systematic energy planning at national and sub-national/County level is highly recommended through the adoption of more realistic assumptions on the future

The health of children is very important in Kenya, given that more than half of its population is under twenty years of age. Despite continued efforts, Kenya has not achieved the Universal Child Immunisation (UCI) target of full immunisation for 75 per cent of all children. It is argued here that two of the factors contributing to this situation are the lack of information and of effective media of communication.
