Abstract:

Cakuntala, vikramorvashi et malavikagnimitra sont trois pieces du dramaturge indien kalidasa (6eme siecle av. J. C. ). Elles sont analysees ici dans leurs aspects structurels et semiologiques. De l'etude de l'espace imaginaire, puis de celle du jeu des personnages, enfin de celle des modes d'expression utilises sur scene, il apparait que l'aspect poetique et suggestif de ces oeuvres l'emporte de beaucoup sur les aspects dramatiques et narratifs. Cette poesie, qui emane aussi bien du texte que des multiples formes d'art utilises et de modes d'expression typiquement indiens tel que "abhinaya" et "mudras", nous semble donc etre l'element caracteristique de ce f theatre. Destinee a faire vibrer puissamment l'emotivite des spectateurs et a les emporter vers un etat emotif quasi contemplatif du monde suggere par la scene, cette poesie est une invitation au voyage dans un imaginaire ou la religion et son ordre socio-culturel structurent toutes choses, conferant l'ordre et la beaute qui en resulte
Cakuntala, vikramorvashi and malavikagnimitra are the three dramas of an indian dramatist named "kalidasa". He lived during 600's ad. They are analysed here in their structural and semiotic aspects. Through the study of the imaginary space, created by the author, through the acting of characters, and through the expressions used on stage, it seems that the poetical and suggestive aspects dominates the dramatic and narrative aspects. This poetry which emanates from the text, as well as from the various formes of art, appears in such caracteristic elements of indian drama as "abhinaya" and "mudra". Destinated to provoke the spectators' emotions as well as to instill a contemplative condition of a suggested world, this poetry is an invitation to venture into an imaginary world, where religion and its socio-cultural order and structure are attributed to order and beauty

Abstract:

The Swedish television series “Kalifat” premiered on January 12th, 2020 and quickly became heavily debated in the Swedish media for its portrayal of Islam and Muslim people. The aim of this research is to study the arguments and attitudes found in this debate and relate them to the theoretical framework of media dissemination and mediatization. The theoretical perspectives creating the foundation for this study is the formative, reflexive and representative media dissemination as presented by Hodkinson (2017). The mediatization theory will also be used to situate the debate and the series itself within a broader context. The empirical material used in this study consists of 10 Swedish debate articles published between January 19th and February 18th 2020. A qualitative argumentation analysis has been used to identify the attitudes and arguments in the debate. In addition, these have been coded, categorized and structured in accordance with a systematic text condensation. The analysis shows that there are both positive and negative attitudes towards the series, with most of the arguments in the debate conveying a negative attitude towards the series and its portrayal of Muslims and Islam. These arguments are mainly related to stereotypification, prejudices and negative representation. Arguments related to a more positive attitude towards “Kalifat” is connected to the journalists view of what the series is trying to impart upon the audience, and its realistic representation of an important topic in society. In relation to the three concepts of media dissemination the study has concluded that the different arguments relate to the interconnectedness of media and religion. The study shows that most of the arguments put forward can be understood in this context by implementing the understanding of media as conduits, language and environments. The study also concludes that both the debate and the series itself can be interpreted and understood in relation to all these media functions. The results found in the study also correlate with previous research on the subject.

La principale question consiste a trouver l'unite qui organise l'ensemble en un tout coherent, et orchestre ce dialogue entre les differents syntagmes. A la lumiere de la theorie semiotique (ecole de paris), et tout en essayant de degager la definition du sujet telle qu'elle ressort de la mise en parallele de deux positions : kalila dimna. Nous avons boserve ces enonces selon deux types de rapport : syntagmatique (rel. De transformation) et paradigmatique (rel. D'equivalence)
This thesis deals with the arabic version of kalila wa dimna, primarily with "the lion and the ox" and "stating the subject of the work", what is of interest in this text is the organisation, based on the principle of the episodic novel, creating digressions and embeddings which pace the syntagmatic unfolding of the text. The principal question is what organises these various elements into a coherent whole, and orchrstrates the dialogue between the different syntagms. In the light of semiotic theory (paris school), and while attempting to define the subject as it emerges from this parallel between two positions, kalila dimna, we have observed these utterances according to two types of relations : syntagmatic (relation of transformation), and paradigmatic (relation of equivalence)

Littérature et politique, deux domaines distincts qui se retrouvent dans un seul livre ; Kalila et Dimna. Ibn al-Muqaffaʻ, à travers un style littéraire qui adopte la parole amusante qui joint l'utile à l'agréable, traite des questions politiques diverses. Notre travail consiste à dévoiler le côté politique du livre sans pour autant écarter sa dimension littéraire. Ainsi, les trois parties de cette étude ont essayé d'analyser premièrement la représentation du politique dans Kalila et Dimna qui passe par le genre de la fable qui instrumentalise les bêtes de manière particulière pour révéler la réalité du monde humain qui ressemble à celle de la jungle. Puis, deuxièmement, elle a abordé le lien existant entre le discours imaginaire et l'action politique, considérée comme la finalité des démarches entreprises dans l'exercice du pouvoir. Ainsi, nous avons traité des points liés à la conservation du pouvoir et à sa stabilisation comme nous avons évoqué le rapport entre le pouvoir et le savoir. Enfin, nous avons consacré la troisième partie à l'analyse des fondements qui servent d'assise pour l'action politique. Nous en avons étudié trois, il s'agit de la violence, de l'obéissance et de l'esprit de justice.

This thesis analyzes the thermodynamics of a power system coupling two renewable heat sources: low-temperature geothermal and a high-temperature solar. The process, referred to as a dual-temperature geothermal-solar Kalina hybrid cycle, is analyzed in detail and then compared to appropriate single-heat source power systems, in order to assess any thermodynamic synergies. With increasing demand for more efficient renewable sources of power generation, a plant design where the working fluid is heated (and partially vaporized) by low- to medium-temperature geothermal brine, before being further vaporized by solar heat, presents an opportunity for efficient operation of the power plant. Given a set of design parameters and the constrained optimization of decision variables, a design basis plant configuration is first chosen. Then, the power output attained by the Kalina hybrid is compared to that attained by a combination of a geothermal organic Rankine cycle and a solar standalone steam cycle, with the same boundary conditions. The Kalina hybrid plant is found to produce 9.5 MW of power, with 100 kg/s of geothermal brine and a solar-to-geothermal heat input ratio constrained to 1. The system performance is increasing in the working fluid low pressure and decreasing in the ammonia molar concentration, at the cost of a corresponding increase in solar-to-geothermal heat input ratio. On a design power comparison basis, the hybrid configuration displays no thermodynamic synergy between geothermal and solar energy modes. Specifically, the hybrid plant produces 29% less net power than the combined single-energy mode plants. No assessment of possible economic synergies is attempted. Potential changes to the current Kalina hybrid cycle that can lead to higher thermodynamic performance include regenerating heat within the cycle; using the solar high quality heat source in alternative locations in the cycle; employing one pressure-turbine loop instead of two; using reheat between the two turbines; and investigating other plausible working fluid mixtures including hydrocarbons and refrigerants.

Abstract:

The primary objective of this work is to determine the Kalina cycle's suitability for thermal power conversion from a pressurized water reactor. Several previous papers have examined this application, but these either lack proof of concept or make unfeasible assumptions. This work expands current knowledge by simulating the Kalina cycle and comparing it to current pressurized water reactor Rankine cycles in order to identify which is more efficient. Prerequisite to the modeling is a simulation tool capable of modeling the thermodynamics of ammonia/water mixtures. Instead of using an existing program, a new one called Clearwater is used. This tool is based on a preexisting Gibbs free energy "super" equation of state. Algorithms for vapor-liquid equilibrium calculations and phase identification are presented. Clearwater will be distributed online as open-source code to aid future developers of ammonia/water power and refrigeration cycles. A comparison of single-stage Kalina and Rankine cycles driven by heat from PWR core coolant suggests that the Kalina cycle is not well suited to the application. Any benefit from the Kalina cycle's ability to match temperature profiles in the boiling region of the steam generator is outweighed by other drawbacks. These include the cycle's 1) increased turbine exhaust pressure and 2) lower average heat absorption temperature caused by its working fluid's relatively high liquid heat capacity, both of which lower efficiency. Having concluded this, an attempt is made to quantify the conditions under which the Kalina cycle produces more power than the Rankine cycle. Both cycles are optimized for a range of heat source inlet and outlet temperatures between 350 â„ƒ and 525 â„ƒ. When both cycles absorb the same amount of heat from the source"”i.e., when source outlet temperature is constrained"” the Kalina cycle is less effective for small source temperature drops. When outlet temperature is unconstrained, the Kalina cycle outperforms the Rankine cycle for all but the lowest inlet temperature. This is due to the Kalina cycle's non-isothermal boiling profile, which allows it to absorb low temperature heat at relatively high pressure. Because of its isothermal boiling profile, the Rankine cycle cannot capture low temperature heat as effectively, so it performs worse over large, unconstrained source temperature drops.

Abstract:

I have in this essay focused on the attitude towards the medieval muslims in swedish textbooks, in the subject of history from the years between 1954 and 2012. I have made an analysis on the discourse in the books and what they says about the muslims who lived before 1500 AD. The theory I have is a Postcolonial one from the authors Edward Said, Ania Loomba and Leela Gandhi. I have also analyzed the rhetorics the authors have used in every textbook. The results I have identified is that the attitude towards the muslims have changed during the years, from a generalizing view that says that the muslims were driven by the religion and that they were different from the Christian European society that existed during the same time. During the years the attitude changed to be more objective and don´t focus so much on the religion as a power over the will of the people and more towards economic and political reasons for the expansion during the 7th and 8th century. The religious tolerance towards Jews and Christians during the islamic reign in the Middle East is presented and is mentioned in most of the books during all of the decades. My conclusions according to the theory is that the change in the attitude can be a result of a higher level of knowledge about the medieval muslims and a decrease in how much the postcolonial theory have influenced the authors.

Chile tiene uno de los recursos solares de mayor calidad en el mundo, el cual no está siendo aprovechado mayormente. Una forma en que se puede utilizar este recurso es captándolo como energía solar térmica. El ciclo Kalina, inventado a principios de la década de 1980, es un ciclo de potencia cuya principal característica es el fluido de trabajo que utiliza, que es una mezcla binaria, típicamente amoníaco agua. En este trabajo se encuentran rangos favorables de condiciones de operación del ciclo Kalina, para generación eléctrica de 0,5 a 4 [MW], a partir de energía solar térmica de baja temperatura (80 200 [°C]). Se desarrollan y validan modelos termodinámicos por la primera y segunda leyes de la termodinámica de los ciclos Kalina y Rankine Orgánico, este último con los fluidos de trabajo R123, R134a y R152a. Los modelos son validados reproduciendo resultados de la literatura encontrándose una buena concordancia. Se realiza un análisis paramétrico a los ciclos Kalina y Rankine Orgánico, investigando la sensibilidad de los rendimientos térmico y exergético al variar la presión en el evaporador solar, la concentración de amoníaco, la temperatura de la fuente de calor, el pinchpoint y la potencia neta. Se encuentra en el ciclo Kalina que se debe evitar un título de vapor excesivamente bajo a la salida del evaporador solar, porque esto tiene un efecto negativo sobre los rendimientos térmico y exergético. Los componentes con la mayor destrucción de exergía son el condensador, la turbina, el evaporador solar y el regenerador. Al variar la potencia neta las variables extensivas crecen linealmente con ésta. Por último, se encuentran las condiciones de operación más favorables del ciclo Kalina en función de la temperatura de la fuente de calor, para alcanzar el máximo rendimiento exergético. En el ciclo Rankine Orgánico se encuentra que el máximo rendimiento exergético se alcanza a la máxima presión admisible en el evaporador solar, y con R152a como fluido de trabajo. Al comparar los ciclos Kalina y Rankine Orgánico se encuentra que el primero alcanza un mayor rendimiento térmico y exergético que el segundo, sin embargo, requiere de una presión en el evaporador solar de un 40% mayor. A bajas presiones en el evaporador solar la diferencia entre ambos ciclos, a favor del ciclo Kalina, es significativamente mayor que a altas presiones. El mayor rendimiento del ciclo Kalina significa que requiere de una menor área de colectores solares, lo cual generalmente resulta crítico en aplicaciones de energía solar.

Den här uppsatsen har skrivits inom ramen för centralasiatisk säkerhetspolitik ur ett europeiskt perspektiv. Jag har begränsat uppsatsen till att fokusera på narkotika, som på senare år har blivit en kärnfråga i säkerhetspolitiska diskussioner, framförallt i Europa och i USA. Genom att tillämpa ett vidare perspektiv har jag försökt överskrida den eurocentrism, evolutionism, passivisering och viktimisering som finns i litteraturen och de artiklar som jag har studerat. Med den beskrivande tesen: Narkotikans roll i kampen om den globala hegemonin och drömmen om kalifatet, har jag velat belysa narkotikans roll i båda dessa strävanden mot en ny värld. Narkotikans roll som ett maktobjekt kan inte förminskas, varken i européernas kamp om den globala hegemonin eller i de islamistiska extremistgruppernas dröm om kalifatet. Narkotikan har haft en betydande och stimulerande roll i historien, i nutiden och kommer även att ha det i framtiden.

Research objective. Investigation of consistent patterns of the induction of flax morphogenesis process, assessment of genetic and physiological aspects of this process and optimization methodologies. Proposition: 1. MOrphogenesis capacity of flax isolated explants depends on a genotype only, but on a composition of a medium and the cultivar type (fibre flax or linseed)also. 2. Cells of different organs of the same genotype have different morphogenic capacity. 3. Combining hormonal ratio with the affect on explats by exogenic factors enables targeted control of the morphogenesis process in vitro.
Darbo tikslas - ištirti linų morfogenezės proceso indukcijos dėsningumus, įvertinti šio proceso genetinius ir fiziologinius aspektus bei optimizuoti regeneravimo metodikas. Ginamieji disertacijos teiginiai: 1. Linų izoliuotų eksplantų morfogeninė galia priklauso ne tik nuo genotipo, maitinamosios terpės sudėties, bet ir nuo veislės tipo (pluoštiniai ar sėmeniniai). 2.To paties genotipo skirtingų organų ląstelės turi skirtingą morfogeninę galią. 3.Derinant hormoninį balansą su eksplantų paveikimu egzogeniniais veiksniais galima kryptingai valdyti morfogenezės procesą in vitro.

Notre recherche tente de repérer les effets scolaires des contradictions que rencontre l'enfant quand il est confronté à des systèmes de valeurs parfois incohérents entre eux. Il s'agira d'explorer les processus d'inter structuration de l'entre deux cultures dans une approche constructiviste où le sujet est actif, intégrant et réinterprétant les différents codes dépendant de son environnement familial, scolaire et social (Baubion, Malrieu et Tap, 1997). Cette recherche dépasse les thèses du déterminisme social selon lesquelles le succès scolaire tient souvent à la proximité des deux cultures familiale et scolaire. Notre étude a été menée en Guyane auprès d'enfants issus de quatre groupes socioculturels différents : les Amériendiens kali'na, les Bushi-nengue n'dyuka, les Hmongs et les Créoles. Ces enfants sont pour la plupart en grande difficulté scolaire, voire en échec. Cependant on constate des réussites scolaires paradoxales qui ne résonnent en rien dans l'univers de l'enfant. C'est par le prisme de la culture, et aussi le statut de la langue que le monde environnant prendra sens pour l'enfant (Bruner 1996), et à fortiori l'expérience scolaire. Nous mettons en exergue qu'au-delà du conflit intra- psychique (Tap, 1991 ; Lescarret et Philip, 1993) entre deux systèmes de valeurs, c'est non seulement de la souplesse du système des adultes qu'il s'agit, mais surtout des ré-interprétations et des dynamiques psychiques qui sous-tendent les processus de resignification
This research seeks to identify the impacts on school attainment that can be found when children are confronted with sets of values that can be at odds with each other. We have explored the "inter-structuration" process stemming from the indeterminate zone separating the two cultures. We have assumed a constructivist approach, in which the subject is regarded as active, integrating and re-interpreting the different codes operating within his family, his school, his social environment (Baubion, Malrieu et Tap, 1997). The survey takes us a step further than the theses of social determinism which claim that school attainment depends on the proximity between family and school cultures. The research has been carried out in French Guiana, among children belonging to different socio-cultural set-ups: Amerindians from the Kali'na community, Bushinenges, from the N'Dyuka group, Asians from the Hmong community and Créoles. Most of them were very poor school achievers, but a few cases of "paradoxical success" have been noted: culture and the status of language, it seems, have helped children in the construction of meaning, whether related to their environment or to their school experiences (Bruner 1996). We highlight the fact that beyond the intra-psychic conflict (Tap, 1991 ; Lescarret et Philip, 1993) generated by jarring sets of values, success hinges not only on the flexibility of adult thought, but above all on the various procedures of re-interpretation and on the psychic dynamics that underpin the reconstruction of meaning

Nowadays, the urban chaos brings some problems to the citizens such as mental fatigue, irritability and lack of attention, emphasizing the need for open urban spaces, capable to contribute to the restoration of physical and mental balance of people. By the variety of alternative uses available, many of them related to the stimulus of entertainment activities, the squares have been identified as restorative environments, especially by its potential as a place of leisure. In this context, the objective of this dissertation is to understand the use of the square as leisure environment, by a square in Natal RN, establishing the relationship between environmental and behavioral characteristics. More specifically, I attempt to identify the major activities that happen there, the people that develop them and the spatial and temporal configurations of this occupation. Among the 290 squares available in the city, the Kalina Maia Square was selected, which is located in the district of Lagoa Nova. The case study chosen was based on criteria relating to scale, shape, location on the urban environment, variability of uses and conservation status. In the study were used behavioral mapping place-centered and people-centered, behavior trace analysis and 14 interviews. The results show that the square is used by people from different ages and social classes, subdivided into groups with specific days and times. These users are usually engaged in activities related to various types of leisure, with sports predominance. The relationship between spatial configuration and behavior shows that there is a sectorization of uses, being possible to identify the environmental characteristics that most favor observed activities, especially in relation to shading and presence of furniture and equipment. Moreover, throughout the day it appears that the affordances inherent to the various fixed objects on the square are decoded differently by various categories of users, by giving them insights that help the development of leisure activities that characterize each group
Atualmente, o caos urbano traz aos moradores das cidades problemas como fadiga mental, irritabilidade e falta de aten??o, acentuando a necessidade de espa?os urbanos abertos, capazes de contribuir para a restaura??o do equil?brio f?sico e mental das pessoas. Pela variedade das alternativas de uso oferecidas, muitas das quais relacionadas ao est?mulo de atividades de entretenimento, as pra?as t?m sido apontadas como ambientes restauradores, principalmente pelo seu potencial enquanto lugar de lazer. Nesse contexto, o objetivo geral desta disserta??o ? a compreens?o do uso da pra?a como ambiente de lazer, tomando como refer?ncia o estudo de uma pra?a de Natal RN, estabelecendo a rela??o entre suas caracter?sticas ambientais e comportamentais. Mais especificamente, busco identificar as principais atividades que ali acontecem, as pessoas que as desempenham e as configura??es espaciais e temporais dessa ocupa??o. Dentre 290 pra?as existentes na cidade, foi selecionada a Pra?a Kalina Maia, localizada no bairro de Lagoa Nova. Estes usu?rios geralmente se envolvem em atividades ligadas a v?rios tipos de lazer, com predomin?ncia do esportivo. A rela??o entre configura??o espacial e comportamento mostra haver uma setoriza??o dos usos, sendo poss?vel identificar as caracter?sticas ambientais que mais favorecem algumas das atividades observadas, sobretudo relacionadas ao sombreamento e ? presen?a de mobili?rio e equipamentos. This master’s thesis analyses Kalina cycle, a power cycle where ammonia – water solution is used as a working fluid. The first part of this study introduces us to the Kalina cycle, presents its advantages and disadvantages, characteristics of the working fluid and its applications. Second section concerns with the method of cycle design and describes the calculation model made in this thesis. The calculation model is attached in a separate .XLSM file. The third part shows calculation of the cycle for given parameters, determination of cycle efficiency and main proportions of the thermal turbine. In the conclusion are the interpretations of the calculations results.

Nowadays more emphasis is made on providing learning possibilities. Every person is an equal member of society irrespective of where he/she lives or what he/she is doing. At present the re-socialisation and probation work done by the penitentiary institutions is exceptionally important. The study of this comparatively new sphere confirms that the issue of teaching/learning of women serving sentence has been hardly analysed. The study is urgent in the sense that the people have to be stimulated to seek knowledge, conditions for learning have to be created and supported irrespective where such people live at given time. It is necessary to induce women serving sentence to make best use of the learning possibilities so that they could successfully use such knowledge when they are released. The reason I chose this theme was that it had not been considered especially as far as women in penitentiary institutions were concerned. It was interesting for me to study the need of the sentenced women for learning and take a closer look at the possibilities provided at the penitentiary institution.

Magistrantūros studijų baigiamajame darbe pateikiami žaliosios šerytės morfogenezės indukcija in vitro tyrimų duomenys. Darbo metodai: vertintas kaliaus susidarymo dažnis (%), ūglių susidarymo dažnis (%), ūglių skaičius iš eksplanto (vnt.) bei šaknų formavimosi dažnis (%). Darbo objektas: Setaria viridis L. Darbo rezultatai. Tyrimų rezultatai atskleidė skirtingą kaliaus, ūglių bei šaknų formavimosi dažnį, dėl skirtingų egzogeninių augimo reguliatorių derinio ir jų kiekio maitinamojoje terpėje. Žaliosios šerytės dediferenciacijos indukcija intensyviau vyko terpėse, papildytose didesniu auksinų nei citokininų kiekiu. Žaliosios šerytės kaliaus formavimosi dažnis varijavo priklausomai nuo egzogeninių augimo reguliatorių derinio indukcijos terpėje. Augimo reguliatorių derinys 2,0 mg l-1 2,4-dichlorfenoksiacto rūgšties + 0,4 mg l-1 6-furfurylamino purino skatino intensyvesnę dediferenciaciją in vitro kultūroje. Antrinė diferenciacija intensyviausiai vyko maitinamojoje terpėje, papildytoje 0,4 mg l-1 α naftilacto rūgšties ir 2,0 mg l-1 N6-(2-izopentil) adenino. Daugiausiai ūglių iš eksplanto susiformavo maitinamojoje terpėje, papildytoje 0,3 mg l-1 NAR + 2,0 mg l-1 2iP. Žaliosios šerytės rizogenezės procesą in vitro skatino augimo reguliatorių deriniai 2,0 mg l-1 2,4D + 0,4 mg l-1 KIN, 0,2 mg l-1 NAR + 2,0 mg l-1 2iP ir 0,4 mg l-1 NAR + 2,0 mg l-1 BAP.
The master work presents the results of increasing of green millet induction of morphogenesis in vitro studies. Method of the work - evaluated callus formation frequency (%), shoot formation rate (%), number of shoots per explant (units) and root formation frequency (%). Object of the work - of Setaria viridis L. The results of work. The results of research showed differences in callus, shoot and root formation frequency of different exogenous growth regulator combination and quantity of nutrient medium. Setaria viridis L dedifferentiation induction intensively was in medium, supplemented by more quantity of auxin than cytokinin. Setaria viridis L callus formation frequency varied depending on the exogenous growth regulators combination of induction medium. Combination of growth regulators for 2.0 mg l-1 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid + 0.4 mg l-1 6-purine furfuryl amine stimulated more intensive dedifferentiation in vitro culture. Secondary differentiation was most intensive in nutrient medium supplemented with 0.4 mg l-1 α naphthyl acetic acid and 2.0 mg l-1 N6-(2-isopentyl) adenine. The most shoots from the explant were formed in a nutrient medium supplemented with 0.3 mg l-1 NAA + 2.0 mg l-1 2iP. Setaria viridis L the process of rhizogenesis in vitro stimulated the growth regulators combinations 2.0 mg l-1 2,4 D + 0.4 mg l-1 KIN and 0.2 mg l-1 NAA + 2.0 mg l-1 2iP and 0, 4 mg l-1 NAA + 2.0 mg l-1 BAP.

This thesis is in agregate the application of some theoric concepts, especially the manipulation wich seems to be one of the most important semiotic concepts displayed by ibn almuqaffaa''s fable. There fore the first part of the work is consecrated to analyse the narratives and discursives structures. Indeed, the opposition of the two actualizers modalities, the power and the knowledge is developped. In the second part are examined the modalities of the doing, seeing that to carry throught his manipulation the subject needs the necessary competence. Abstract:

A content analysis of "Islamic State" (IS) propaganda material released around the movement's proclamation of a Caliphate in 2014, this study is an attempt at analysing ways in which presented arguments express a coherent narrative of symbolic meaning. Using Robert Benford & David Snow's ideas on the so-called three core framing tasks as a clarifying template, I discuss ways in which the analysed material argues for the legitimacy and relevance of the IS movement. IS propagandists argue that the Muslim umma is under attack, and that Muslims need to unite under a common authority that can protect their religion, restore their strength, and counteract their humiliation. The IS Caliphate is presented as a hopeful sign, but is in need of committed recruits who are willing to sacrifice for what is presented as the greater good. As the analysed propaganda is particularly focused on this latter (motivational) aspect of the narrative, it focuses extensively on formulating arguments that reinforce it. I hold that many of these arguments can be traced back to what can be described as appeals to virtues like sincerity, authenticity, and truthfulness – and that all of these are also used to argue for the credibility of the IS Caliphate as an Islamic authority. Arguing that this Caliphate will serve the role of an aiding sword of Islam, it is furthermore presented as a necessary and vigorous structure aimed at protecting "truth" and at eradicating "falsehood".
