Abstract:

Abstract: In 1397, was formalized in the city of Kalmar, Sweden, the union of the crowns of Denmark, Sweden and Norway under one Danish king, which lasted intermittently until 1523. The purpose of this paper is to indicate why this Scandinavian union began and why it fell apart, finally, 126 years later. The hypothesis is that the battle for control of the Baltic Sea was instrumental in the formation of a strong union against the Hanseatic League, which was presented as a threat to the commercial interests of the Scandinavians, and the dissolution occurred mainly because of endogenous power struggles between the Swedish nobility and the Danish monarchs. It is argued that the union costs, mainly the costs of wars, had become too high for the dissatisfied Swedish aristocracy versus the benefits of a strong union to control the Baltic Sea.

Keywords: Kalmar – Union Hanseatic – Nation-states.

Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) in Kalmar County, in southern Sweden, between 2008 and 2019, and to analyse the relationship between the LNB incidence and climate factors. Data containing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cell counts and borrelia CSF/serum antibody index results was received from the departments of clinical chemistry and microbiology at Kalmar County hospital. For this study, we defined LNB as a case with a positive borrelia antibody CSF/serum index and CSF leukocytes > 5 × 106/L. Climate data including mean temperature, humidity and precipitation covering Kalmar County was collected from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. A total of 5051 paired serum-CSF samples from 4835 patients were investigated of which 251 laboratory LNB cases were found. The average annual LNB incidence in Kalmar County 2008–2019 was 8.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Positive relationships were observed between mean temperature and LNB incidence (p < 0.001) as well as precipitation and LNB incidence (p = 0.003), both with a one calendar month delay. The results suggest an association between climate factors such as mean temperature and precipitation and LNB incidence, presumably through increased/decreased human-tick interactions. This calls for increased awareness of LNB in both the short perspective after periods of warmth and heavy precipitation as well as in a longer perspective in relation to possible climate change. Further studies with larger study groups, covering other geographical areas and over longer periods of time are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract:
As moths are vital components of ecosystems and serve as important bioindicators, understanding the dynamics of their communities and the factors influencing these dynamics, such as anthropogenic impacts, is crucial to understand the ecological processes. Our study focuses on two provinces in southern Sweden, Västergötland and Småland, where we used province records from 1974 to 2019 in combination with light traps (in 2020) to record the presence and abundance of moth species, subsequently assessing species traits to determine potential associations with their presence in anthropogenically modified landscapes. This study design provides a unique opportunity to assess temporal changes in moth communities and their responses to shifts in environmental conditions, including anthropogenic impacts. Across the Västergötland and Småland provinces in Sweden, we recorded 776 moth taxa belonging to fourteen different taxonomic families of mainly Macroheterocera. We captured 44% and 28% of the total moth species known from these provinces in our traps in Borås (Västergötland) and Kalmar (Småland), respectively. In 2020, the species richness and abundance were higher in Borås than in Kalmar, while the Shannon and Simpson diversity indices revealed a higher species diversity in Kalmar. Between 1974 and 2019, the colonisation rates of the provinces increased faster in Småland. Ninety-three species were found to have colonised these provinces since 1974, showing that species richness increased over the study period. We reveal significant associations between the probability of a species being present in the traps and distinct traits compared to a provincial species pool. Traits over-represented in the traps included species with a high variation in colour patterns, generalist habitat preferences, extended flight periods, lower host plant specificity, and overwintering primarily as eggs. Our findings underscore the ongoing ecological filtering that favours certain species-specific traits. This study sheds light on the roles of climate change and anthropogenic impacts in shaping moth biodiversity, offers key insights into the ecological processes involved, and can guide future conservation efforts.

Abstract:

This essay considers the new prison in Kalmar, which was built 1852 and replaced the former prison in the castle of Kalmar. In the forts the conditions were awful and the interms lived together in large rooms. With the new reform that took place in Sweden, with the so-called Philadelphiasystem, the concept was to isolate the prisoner one by one in smaller rooms. The idea was to give them a religious ground so they could get themselves a self-reflection and a conscience. It was a new system for the personnel to control the internals and the order in prison.

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to examine whether visiting noblemen at the castles of Borgholm and Kalmar with their vast network of acquaintances can determine a tendency towards a political stance in the civil war of Sweden in the late 16th century. This is done by examining the guests and the company of the bailiff, born as a commoner but later governor and nobleman, Christoffer Gyllengrip Andersson, who in the end of the century would perish in the same manner as many of the peerage who fell at the bloodbath of Linköping in the year 1600. The networks are analyzed with the help of accountings and census records from the above mentioned castles between the years 1579-1592 whereon by the year 1593 the following national as well as local events will be analyzed and presented until the year 1600. The essay shows that allegiance to one or the other side can be seen to certain degree in the presented era delving into Kalmar Castle generally, allthough the true nature of one’s political ideals become most visible in the later 1590s when the noblemen actually are forced to take sides, instead of the double-agent poppycock of which they were in the antecedent decade of 1580. The essay shows that the information given by the census-records can be anchored in history’s more famous line such as when Olof Andersson Oxehufvud (one of many) is assigned as governor in the year 1594 to prevent the eminent empowerment of his uncle Karl, Duke of Södermanland, Närke and Värmland.

Abstract:
Coastal tourism is one of the most important way of leisure and entertainment in the world, which brings impact in varying degrees to the tourism destination. These effects relate to economic, social, and environmental aspects. With the concept of sustainability being widely used, sustainable tourism has received more attention. However, most studies focus on the tourism impact on the coastal environment, while the social and economic aspects were sparse explorations. Therefore, this research applies the qualitative method to explore the social and economic impact of tourism on the coastal city, Kalmar. Furthermore, the perspective of residents and business owners is the main way to reflect these effects. According to the results of the study, the development of the tourism industry will indeed bring some impact to the coastal city on economy and society. However, due to differences of cultural background and actual situation, these effects are not always the same. For example, for the economic impact of tourism business, the impact on the hotel is more noticeable than the impact on restaurants and bars.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to examine how the interventions for homeless persons in the municipality of Kalmar are organized. The study is based on four half-structured qualitative interviews with both representatives from different instances and also from persons who have experience of being homeless. The theoretical bases we have used to analyze the material are organization theory, specifically the concept of bureaucracy. Our results show that homelessness is not seen as a problem in itself, since the general view is that homeless people often have a complex problem scenario where drug- and alcohol abuse and mental illness are common. It is often the latter that takes priority in the interventions and the housing question is therefore neglected. We also found that social services do not have a satisfactory structure around the organization of the work on homelessness. They do not have any specific device in Kalmar that focus on homelessness issues with the result that the existing units are forced to take care of the work of homelessness. This represents a problem as the interventions are being adapted to this area of specialization with the result that the housing issue is overlooked. Another conclusion is that there is a lack of long-term solutions in the municipality. Today the efforts are mainly aimed at placing homeless people in short-term temporary accommodation.

Abstract:
Abstract In the Middle Ages, Old Norse served as a written norm in Norway and Iceland, whereas in other parts of Scandinavia, Latin was the language of culture. After the fourteenth century Norway, economically and culturally, joined Sweden and Denmark as part of the Kalmar Union, leaving Icelanders alone as followers of the old norm, while elsewhere new typologically different varieties developed in trade with the Hansa. In the Reformation, a new written norm, influenced by Low German, developed in Danish Bible translations, originally intended to serve all Scandinavians; but for ideological reasons a special version was printed as the Gustav Vasa Bible in Sweden. Modern Scandinavian “semi-communication” is based on this formally similar but ideologically split norm. In spite of the opaque relation between modern common Scandinavian and Icelandic/Old Norse, an ideology of cultural proximity prevails, all states having similar organizations dealing with language planning and policy.

Abstract:
This book charts the rise of three Scandinavian kingdoms—Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—from the tenth century until the end of the Kalmar Union and the introduction of the Reformation in the early sixteenth century. Drawing on new ideas about personal relationships, rituals, feuds, and mediation, it examines the kingdoms' alternative paths to state formation and the specifically medieval contribution to this process. In discussing Scandinavian state formation, the book also considers the changing map of Western Christendom in the High Middle Ages. In particular, it describes how the European state was exported to new areas and how Western Christendom expanded in the Mediterranean, in Scandinavia, and in East Central Europe. Whereas the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea was for the most part an object of conquest and colonization, the three Scandinavian kingdoms were established in the North and West, and Poland, Bohemia, and Hungary in the East.

Abstract:
Abstract The year of the first oil crisis, 1973, marked the end of an era for the Western automobile producers, and for the Swedish car makers Volvo and Saab in particular. During the 1950s and 1960s, they had enjoyed rapid growth and prospered in spite of being small-scale producers together accounting for only 1 per cent of global car production. Operating in a small open economy, Volvo and Saab were severely affected by the sudden transition to a low growth market. In 1974, Volvo announced its first deal in a strategy for continued expansion: the acquisition of the DAF company in the Netherlands. The same year, Volvo also inaugurated two new plants in Sweden, Kalmar and Skovde, both designed according to socio-technical principles, by means of which Volvo hoped to solve its severe personnel problems and safeguard future worker recruitment. These two events, the acquisition in the Netherlands and the high-profile departure from a Fordist plant design in Sweden, highlight two themes which continued to shape Volvo’s agenda into the 1980s and 1990s. The company’s struggle to survive as an independent automobile maker in a small, open economy has shaped its strategic orientation. Its efforts to respond to Swedish labour market pressures formed the basis for a distinctive production model.

Abstract:
This report presents results from a project that aims at increasing future awareness in the cultural heritage sector, using the SoPHIA model. The project was run by the Centre for Applied Heritage at Linnaeus University, with funding from the university. Work on the report was carried out in2021 and 2022 by NCK (The Nordic Centre of Heritage Learning and Creativity AB) under the direction of Gustav Wollentz, in co-operation with Kalmar County Museum, Jamtli Museum, andDaniel Laven from the Department of Economics, Geography, Law and Tourism at Mid Sweden University. Results from the project show that the model succeeded in exploring possible future effects of a heritage intervention, defined as any action that results in a physical change to an element of a historic place, and related these effects to prioritized issues for societal development, such as participation, inclusion, and wellbeing. It managed to expand the range of potential action in the present. Furthermore, it also provided a useful tool for identifying significant areas where there is the potential to think more innovatively and creatively regarding future change and effects. The model helped in identifying the necessary steps and actions needed for realizing the interventionin accordance with a desirable scenario. The model failed in anticipating long-term futures or futures radically different from the present. It mostly provided insights into how the intervention could have an impact upon future change, but not on how future change would have an impact upon the intervention. Ways of adapting the model for increased future awareness are suggested. These include ways to make the model more suitable for anticipating long-term futures as well as futures of radical change.
