Kalcij (Ca) je važan element u gnojidbi jabuke te je direktno vezan uz kvalitetu plodova. Uslijed nedostatka kalcija (Ca) u plodovima jabuke dolazi do pojave gorkih pjega. Gorke pjege su posljedica fiziološkog poremećaja kod usvajanja kalcija tijekom rasta i razvoja plodova jabuka. Postoji mnogo razloga za pojavu gorkih pjega, te je u modernom uzgoju jabuka potrebno voditi računa o svim čimbenicima koji ograničavaju usvajanje kalcija. Pravilna gnojidba i izbor gnojiva na bazi kalcija može značajno smanjiti pojavu gorkih pjega u jabukama.
