Abstract:
The paper draws on long-lasting random survey work by the University of Ioannina in southern Salamis. Its aim is to highlight the trajectory of the valley of Kanakia, in the southwest part of the island, during the transition from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. The material record at hand, originating from surface collections and limited trial trenches from seven sites at the valley of Kanakia, suggests a Late/Final Neolithic dispersed mode of habitation followed by a concentrated one by the Early Helladic II period (mid 3rd millennium B.C.). This attested settlement nucleation by the

Conserving the earth's precious water supply is of increasing importance in light of the growing population and climate dynamics; therefore, this study focuses on identifying those exotic species that are best suited for the changing climate and environment of the Lower Kanawha Valley Region in West Virginia without compromising the water sustainable qualities once exhibited by the indigenous species. This task was accomplished by reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating the plant hydraulics and habitat matching characteristics associated with the identified native and exotic species. These specie

This chapter examines the US federal government’s acquisition of land for military purposes via eminent domain cases in the US district court, and via leases, licenses, and permits from the territorial government and private landowners. Legal regimes of eminent domain and land leasing employed capitalist logics of property and fair exchange to conceal the reiteration of primitive accumulation and render the US military’s unilateral environmental desecration of Hawaiian land as “just.” At the same time, this settler military logic was always responding to Native sovereignty and assertions of th

The purpose of this paper is to propose a newly floor response spectra (FRS) in order to evaluate simply the structural response of the actively-controlled secondary system subjected to earthquake. This paper adopts a linear single-degree-of-freedom system as a main structure and an active mass damper (AMD) system as the active control technology. Also, the earthquake wave is modeled as product of a non-stationary envelope function and a stationary Gaussian random process of which power spectral density is equal to the Kanai-Tajimi spectrum. The control design is executed by using linear quadr

Abstract:
Developing countries often lack the financial resources to provide public goods. Property taxation has been identified as a promising source of local revenue, because it is relatively efficient, captures growth in real estate value, and can be progressive. However, many low income countries do not collect property taxes effectively due to missing or incomplete property tax rolls. We use machine learning and computer vision models to construct a property tax roll in a large Congolese city. To train the algorithm and predict the value of all properties in the city, we rely on the value of 1,654

Abstract:
Governments in the world’s poorest countries face severe revenue constraints. They typically collect less than 10 per cent of GDP in taxes, compared to 25–50 per cent in high-income countries. The literature on state capacity and development argues that inability to collect taxes is at the heart of why low-income countries are as poor as they are. It suggests that the path to economic prosperity may begin with investment in governments’ capacity to collect the tax revenue necessary to provide public goods that enhance productivity. Property taxation is often the primary source of government re
