Full textKananga, the fourth city of the democratic republic of Congo, in terms of demographic is since its creation at the end of the XIXth century, multilingual. This multilinguism has known diverve forms in history. Many languages, foreign and congolese, have coexisted at a moment or another. Nowdays, the number of used languages in Kananga is estimed at more than sixty languages. However, this city remains largely monocultural and monolingual. The communication in Ciluba is prevailing, followed by French, Lingala and Swahili. However, in official sectors, French is predominant orally, and in its written form in monopolistic situation. This state linguistic politics since the colonial period and diverse favourable and disfavourable reprsentations towards one and another idiom explain greatly the linguistic dynamics at it is presented. Besides, this linguistic politics, though efficacy, needs to be perfected in many aspects

Full textKananga, the subject of this study is a town situated in the southern part of zaire. Serving as the metropolitan city of westen kasai, kananga has a population of 380. 000 inhabitants and lies on the latitudes 5o35' southwards and on the longitudes 22025' eastwards. The study aims to illustrate how human activities (for survival) in poverty stricten situations contribute to the degradation of the urban ecosytem. It is universally accepted that ecological balance results from equilibrum between the biotic, abiotic and human systems. The discruption of balanced relationship between these three systems can best explain the causes of the environmental problems encountered in kananga : massive soil erosions, pollutions, deforestation and the lack of sanitation etc. . . To clearly quality the effects of these problems, we carried out a systematic and integrated field survey. The analysis of this investigation helped us to come up some recommendations such and intensive community motivation and involvement as one of the stratigies by shich we can improve urban life

Full textThe evangelization of Mai-Ndombe region in the Bandundu province in Congo-Kinshasa began on 4 October, 1907. The area of the district of Mai-Ndombe, which first belonged to the Apostolic Curacy of the Congo Independent State, then after 1919 to the Apostolic Curacy of Léopoldville before breaking apart in 1953 to become the Apostolic Curacy of Inongo, became the Diocese of Inongo on 10 November, 1959. More than a hundred years after the first missionaries arrived, the religious situation is contrasted with, on the one hand the presence of the Church with a well established native clergy, the start of a diocesan religious congregation, numerous religious and priesthood vocations, the growing number of Catholics (440 878 out of a population of 1 036 667), and on the other hand the upsurge of witchcraft, the popular quest for curing, the proliferation of new religious movements outside the Church, and poverty. By tracing the history of the Mai-Ndombe evangelization, this thesis studies a new approach to faith devised from the inculturation viewpoint. Considering the obstacles met by evangelization and studying the process of inculturation, the thesis suggests inculturation Pastoralia which relies on the understanding of the Church as the family of God whose living church communities are the perfect illustration. In addition, the thesis extracts inculturation from the “all religious” to make it a quest of God in everyday’s life, which opens it to everyone
Nadeau-Bernatchez, David. Paris, EHESS, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EHES0571.
Full textThis thesis is concerned with present-day Congolese (DRC) urban music with regard to its relations with daily life, to history and to the identity of its capital city Kinshasa. Rooted in a fundamental intuition by Claude Lévi-Strauss (that music might be, like myth, a machine that annihilates time), it is around the problem of music and its manifold relationships with time (social and symbolic; historical and memory-like; musical; performative) that the author seeks to renew its scope by giving it a new analytical foothold. The thesis begins with a general study of the evolution of Congolese urban music, measured against contemporary endogenous categories ("modern", "religious", "traditional" and "international"). Through the combination of history, cultural anthropology and audiovisual records, various views culled from daily life and musical practices are then observed, analyzed, and compared: that of a commune of Kinshasa (Bandai); that of a certain number of individual players, mainly musicians and music lovers; that of the whole city as an imaginary space and the birthplace of identity. Both theoretical, as a broad interrogation of the relations between music and social life, and empirical, as an ethnography of the behaviours and the know-how with which it is associated in Kinshasa, the thesis thus attempts to avoid the pitfalls of culturalism by questioning the way in which "globalization" sets in motion the notions of "universality" (music, time, human being) and of "particularity" (belonging, daily life, social organization) as defined by the project of modernity

Full textFrom a social anthropology of inspiration and phenomenological understanding, this thesis questions the process of emergence, movement and reconstruction of the congolese Revival, which has grown exponentially since the 1970s within and outside of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The perspective adopted is historical (the late fifteenth to date contemporary) and multiple locations (Brussels, Kinshasa, Paris, Toulouse). It is justified by the forms of continuity that give to see this theology of Salvation with the prophecies of precolonial and colonial periods, while inscribed in a vast movement of religious globalization, pentecostalism. It is from this framework that examines the devices of "deliverance", differently implemented in the Congolese revival churches, the arrival of migrants- missionaries in Europe, where the first churches today have 25 years of existence and modes of political participation (DRC), significantly marked by processes of demonization. The different angles of the thesis aim to contribute to the understanding of conflicts in that intrinsic religiosity (Bible/Witchcraft) by considering the different currents and spatiotemporal reconstructions of the declinations Revival as something as memory, irreducible an imaginary or identity issues. The development prospects of the way that religious discourse makes territory then leads to the historical depth of the new missionaries' dynamics that inform the reconstructions observed in migration

Full textThis thesis examines the role of the congolese army in the process of the democratization in Congo; how and why the Congolese military agreed to return to barracks after they had played a major part in the history of the country. It deals with the directions of the Congolese defence policy and the measures necessary for restructuring the army. In addition, it analyses the uncertainties of the democratic change. It intends, finally, to study the way the stabilization of the democratic process can be conceivable in a fairly turbulent national and regional context

Full textThis study focuses one's attention on the legal treatment of religious confessions, groups and movements in Democratic Republic of Congo. The religion is an important matter that affects deeply the political dynamic in the contemporary Congo. The colonial legislation of religions is legal status of cults and missions. The post-colonial legislation of religions condideres religions as cultuals associations. This study shows the limits of liberal policy, as legal basement of the State in history of Congo because this liberal policy doesn't assure a strict neutrality of the State in the respect of every conviction and belief. The congolish law of religions is complexe and various, and touchs different aspect of law (Public, Private, Penal, International law, Constitutional, Administrative Law. . . )

Full textHow to account for the stirrings and the religious burgeoning of Congolese Africa? How to access an understanding of the complex, multi referential systems, "cobbled tegether"(C. Levi-Strauss) and set up by the various actors. How to decipher the often disturbing evolutions of the characters and the politico-religious movements in the congolese space. What logic lies behind their dynamism? Here is a series of the questions raised in this thesis along with others of the same kind. To open a path of intelligibility, i have studied what i consider the founding event of modernity in Congo : Messianism. My thesis aims at measuring the centrality and the complexity of this event as well as the various meanings it still infers today. The Messianic event is an engine whose constitution and explosion initiate an "establishing rupture"(M. De Certeau) and a new "time order"(K. Pomian). A decisive field arises from that theorretically fertile place which will tend to organise, influence and re-order the whole set of theoretic and practical experiences in history. Messianism in Congo is thus a high place of intelligibility that canstand for a reading-grid, a cardinal notion to study the social actor's ways, their implicationsand their meanings more easily. Amidst upheaval and hidrances of all kinds, it can be used as an analyser to free a space to interpret snatches of conversation, scraps of tales, rhythmas, fights, speeches and disorders in a society involved in building "a tentative world order" (M. Augé)

In contrast with the Sahara and Southern Africa, Central Africa is superficially presented and largely overlooked in general publications and compilations regarding rock art research. The rock art of Lower Congo is concentrated in a region that stretches from Kinshasa to the Atlantic coast and from Northern Angola to Southern Congo-Brazzaville. Although already reported in the nineteenth century by James Tuckey during his exploration of the Congo River, it had never been a subject of thorough investigation. As a result, its age has long remained uncertain.
Presently inhabited by the Ndibu, one of the Kongo subgroups, the Lovo Massif is situated north of the ancient Kongo kingdom. Although Kongo has been, since the end of the fifteenth century, one of the best-documented kingdoms of Africa, both through historical records and through ethnographic and anthropological studies in more recent times, in archaeological terms it remains largely unknown. With 102 sites (including 16 decorated caves), the Lovo Massif has the largest concentration of rock art in the entire region. Hundreds of limestone outcrops with carved surfaces, punctuated by numerous caves and rocky overhangs, rise up over an area of about 400 square kilometers.
Through the research I have undertaken, it has been possible to determine for the first time direct dates for the rock art of Lower Congo. The study of the previously unknown decorated caves of Tovo and Nkamba, in particular, has allowed me to ascertain the chronology and the interpretation of these rock images.

Full textThe human body can form the subject of historical discussion. In this present study we attempt to prove it by illustrating the kukua case of the north-western congo. By a grouping several sources (oral, linguistic, material, iconographical and written), it is possible to bring out a gradual modification of those "procedures" which consolidate the balance of the human body : - growth and modelling techniques (from birth to old age); - presentation and protection techniques (bodily care and clothing); - maintenance techniques (feeding and health); - at last collective attitudes towards death. Contacts with other ethnic groups have had some effects on bodily behaviour among the kukua tribe. Two particular eras are to be mentioned here : - from 1880 to 1937 : this era saws the socialization of the human body; - from 1937 onwards. This era marks the provisional evaluation of changes. This way of dealing eith the social treatment of the body in the kukua tribe before and after 1937 (when their cultural contacts started) is absolutely necessary. We have based our study on the kukua tribe so that we can compare them with other groups

Full textFirst systematic study of the history of theatre in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this work positions itself within the quadruple historic, literary, theatrical and ecclesiastical plan. It is structured in three large parties framed my an introduction and a conclusion. Annexed are the biographical notes concerning some actors and a list of the mentioned theatrical pieces. With regard to its content, the first part consists of an inventory which is organized on a topological basis. The theatrical representations are reviewed by locality in the country's eight administrative sub-divisions, which are classified in alphabetical order. At the end of each section, a statistical matrix visualized by an histogram and accompanied by an explanatory note provides a synthetic view of the whole work. This inventory is preceded by a description of information written sources, i.e. the newspapers of the time. The second part presents a chronology of theatrical acts in Congo between 25 December 1905 and 30 June 1960. In a systematic and logical fashion, the third part deals successively with the constitution of the directory, an intellectual theatre aimed at entertaining the masses, its religious, educational and social aspects, and finally its formative character

Full textThis thesis is an effort we made to summary four decades of political relations between the european Union and Congo-Kinshasa. That means the political relations between Belgium and Congo in one hand and those between France and Congo in the other hand. We were obliged to study one theme between relationships ( according to the module in the political sciences in 1996- 1997 : Social and Political institutions and dynamism in West Europ ). Europ encourages the dictator government who starve their own people and change the public help for their own pocket. The president Mobutu had transformed his rich country such as Congo- Kinshasa into the poorest all over the world. There has been some influences on the government construction. Thereby our work is base on: speeches, summaries, extractions which are : Social politic system of the Congo ethnical groups in pre colonial period. Social politic period settled by Belgium and after the independence. The study of the relationship between the three periods. Therefore we are in need of the History studies, political philosophy, political sociology, political anthropology and actualities which are: Congo and Belgium administration archives: some from political parties, some from syndical, professionnal and social organisation others from private actors and political witnesses. .

Full textThe present work shows the way american films enter in black francophone africa, particularly in the congo. It also compares the screen time of american films, the gate-money yielded by these films to the french ones and films of other origins. With a questionnaire focused on a sample of the congolese population, mainly movie goers, we try to know how the united states of america is seen by the congolese through american films. Moreover, we intend to analyse the influences of american films on the congolese way of life according to the data collected, this thanks on the one hand to the questionnaire mentioned before and to an observation of the congolese society during our stay in this country, on the other. Finally we want to demonstrate that the vitality and the relative stability of the congolese culture, french support to the congolese television through "canal france international" (c. F. I. ) and soviet influence on thousands of congolese students trained for years in the former soviet bloc enable the congolese society to resist to a large expansion of american values in this country

Full textThe process of democratisation that took place in sub-Saharan Africa at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries in some countries led to a conflictuality that went beyond the open and legal confrontation that democracy represents, in other words it led to armed and homicidal violence. The ethnical or confessional dimension of this violence is often considered to signify the return of an archaism or an atavism and as the expression of these societies’ exteriority or weak integration into the process of globalisation. Based on the cases of Congo-Brazzaville and Cote d’Ivoire, this study shows that these wars said to be ethnical show, on the contrary, that these societies have been part of globalisation for long time, globalisation being understood as a process that began about five centuries ago with the transatlantic slave trade and went over into colonisation and then post-colonisation. Thus, the ethnic/regional and confessional dimensions serve as window-dressing for the modern and post-modern interests of the main political and economic national (Congolese and Ivorian) and international actors, principally from the former colonial metropolis. The fact that supposedly scientific studies accentuate these dimensions, rather than the modern and post-modern interests that structure them, is no coincidence. It is one aspect of this same globalisation’s nature, in which the sub-Saharan African’s otherness and ontological inferiority have been “scientifically” elaborated. The study of these conflicts thus contributes to a redefinition of globalisation or of modernity, unfettered from the “occidentalocentrism” that still dominates Africanism, understood as a discursive aggregate about sub-Saharan Africa

Full textThis Systems Approach Modeling Integral Action Research (SAMIAR) Cardinal and Morin (1994) take its place in the context of the reconstruction of education in the Democratic Republic of Congo, more precisely in the province of South Kivu. Indeed, reducing the gap between curriculum requirements, and social needs that secondary technical and vocational education should meet, is the main concern of this study. This gap is reflected in terms of mismatch between the needs of society and the teaching curriculum on the one hand, and on the other hand, in terms of lack of consistency between the skills in technical and vocational secondary education skills for the labor market. The literature about the development of the educational curriculum in various contexts, mainly in post-war contexts, has revealed how the beneficiaries and educational actors evolve in educational curriculum development (OECD, 1995; Lenoir and Bouillier-Oudot, 2006; Goddard, 2007; Trabelsi and Dubois, 2006; Benavente, 2006; Obura, 2003; Sinclair, 2005). The theoretical framework, symbolic interactionism (Coulon, 1993, Le Breton, 2004) supported by systems thinking (Bausch, 2001; Checkland, 1981; Lapointe, 1995; Morin, 2010) has allowed us to understand how, from the experiences and the visions of beneficiaries and the actors of teaching, can we develop and/or adjust the technical and vocational secondary education curriculum, and develop guiding principles of an action plan and its implementation to meet the emerging needs in the province of South Kivu in the post-war context. We use the Soft Systems Methodology to understand the complexity of the problem situation of education in South Kivu. Using two research techniques: focus groups and participation in the Round Table, we obtained results that meet our research objectives. These results relate to the visions of education and skills development in the teaching curriculum to meet emerging needs: need peace, social security, socio-economic and educational needs. Finally, the perceptions of the actors on the problematic situation of teaching were used to update the action changes to the education curriculum. To improve the current situation map, we have developed guiding principles for the design and implementation of action of a South Kivu technical and vocational education curriculum.

Full textThis thesis is devoted to the study of french; geography, history and reading school textbooks in use in the colonial and contemporary schools of the congo. It deals with several aspects : authors. Editors, distribution networks, bibliographical indexes; regulations and international aid. It also sets out the political and educational structures that may have influenced the life of the school textbook during the given periods. The methodology which has been used in this study is based on bibliometrics (or measurement of the writing and the book), and is made up of three reading school textbooks, two of which were published during the colonial period and the third, in 1976. The bibliometrical study deals with the contents of the texts, the illustrations and the material aspect of these school textbooks

The issue of sexually transmitted infections (STI) in Africa has long been neglected by
researchers African social scientists, particularly because of the taboo surrounding sexuality in Africa.
However, recent decades have resulted in several research conducted mainly by the European
Africanists on these diseases through the emergence of the current pandemic of AIDS. Most of studies
are focused on risk factors, distribution mechanisms, the popular attitudes about these infections,
control policies. But historical studies on STI are seldom examined. Those that exist are mainly
concerning the demographic dimension focuses on the problem of declining birth, leaving the socio-historical
and socio-epidemiological spread of such diseases. While AIDS is ravaging the world and
especially in sub-Saharan Africa, one thing to mention is that the interest of historical reflection on
STI in the Congo is obvious.
Contrary to an assertion conventionally accepted in the literature, that the fight against
gonorrhea and syphilis among the Congolese population was a success for the colonial authorities,
especially after the Second World War, our thesis shows rather the increasing prevalence of STI. The
archives and analysis of data indicates this continued progress is the result of special conditions of
industrialization and urbanization colonial that make people vulnerable. Cities from this historical
process will not only areas of acculturation and modernity, but also places for expansion of these
diseases. The development of prostitution and multiple sexual partners through free and temporary
unions are the main factors explaining this observation.
It has generally praises how the actions of Belgian colonial health in the Congo as 'model'.
However, no study has been conducted to establish or to compare quantitatively the health status
between Blacks (Congolese) and Withes (Europeans in majority). This essay shows the social health
inequalities among these two populations. The Congolese many in number, but more socially
disadvantaged have only less favorable conditions to health. While the white people, socially
privileged, generally have better health status. Several indicators developed in this study are revealing
of the colonial reality in terms of sanitation, access and use of care and health status differential.

If the number of Europeans (Belgians, Greeks and Italians) living in Katanga has considerably decreased during the post-colonial period, they represent today the most powerful entrepreneurial group of the local economy. Once considered the troubles they came across since independence, why did they remain in the Congo? How did they develop their business in a declining economy, in process of marginalization, and in a patrimonial political structure, which proves to be more and more unstable? Finally, what is their place and role in Congolese society? These are the three questions this thesis tries to give an answer. Through the chapters, it studies the migration of expatriates in Africa, their relationship with Congolese society, the dynamics of their community, their role in the two most important sectors of Katanga, and the way they interact with the agents of the State. For this purpose, it rests upon a fieldwork research led between 2003 and 2004.
