This article examines three moments of the post-Kantian philosophical tradition in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries: Kantianism, Post-Kantian Idealism, and Neo-Kantianism. It elucidates the distinctive methods of a tradition that has never entirely disappeared and is now acknowledged once again as the source of contemporary insights. It outlines two problematics—naturalist scepticism and historicist nihilism—threatening the possibility of metaphysics. The first concerns sceptical worries about reason, emerging from attempts to extend the methods of natural science to the study of human beings. Kant’s project of a critical and transcendental analysis of reason, with its distinctive methods, should be considered a response. The second arises from the development of new methods of historical inquiry, seeming to undermine the very possibility of individual agency. Also considered are Kant’s successors’ revisions of the critical and transcendental analysis of reason, undertaken to overcome challenges confronting the original versions of Kant’s methods.

Taiichi Ohno was never CEO of Toyota—rather he was part of dual-leadership teams—but his pioneering version of ‘lean’ production made significant contributions to Toyota’s success and to global manufacturing. The chapter’s first section also describes the pioneering contribution of Toyota founder, Kiichiro Toyoda, who invented the notion of just-in-time production in the 1930s. In the 1950s–60s Ohno’s emphasis on innovative adaptation—his key rational method—to Japan’s distinctive car market and factory environments would lead to a new production system. It included the internationally famous ‘just-in-time’, ‘continuous flow’, and Kanban information-system aspects of his production system. Ohno also used both strategic and quantitative calculation, particularly in his grand strategy of reducing cost/waste in production. The final section on ‘Toyotaism versus Fordism’ echoes Chapter 2’s and describes a rivalry between the American and Japanese production systems.

Ein Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf der Beschreibung und Reflexion des Forschens mit Kindern. Das Buch richtet sich zum einen an Studierende und Forschende der Erziehungswissenschaft und ihrer Nachbardisziplinen. Ihnen gibt es einen Einblick in grundlegende theoretische Rahmungen hinsichtlich der Themenhorizonte Kindheit, Kindheitsforschung und Diversität und stellt Methoden des Forschens, die den aktiven Einbezug von Kindern ermöglichen, in konzentrierter Weise vor. A method for studying well-being is proposed, one that makes room for philosophical theorizing and for the test of introspection. The method is used to support the intrinsic value of philosophy, the sciences, the arts, and other activities that deepen and enrich our experience. These undertakings are various forms of human flourishing: they make use of our natural powers, bringing them to a high point of development. One especially important form of human flourishing occurs in ethical life: the inner life of a good person is a component of well-being available to nearly every human being. The Kantian tradition distorts the nature of ethical life by neglecting self-interested reasons for having and exercising the moral virtues.

This chapter examines the Catholic Modernists who belonged to the generation of 1890 (Dreyfus). The primary figures include Alfred Loisy, George Tyrrell, Eduard Le Roy, Maurice Blondel, and Lucien Laberthonnière. Each figure is examined briefly, with particular attention being paid to the influence of the historical method, Kantian philosophical criticism, and social and political engagement on their work. Given the enormous influence that the thought of Maurice Blondel played on the ressourcement thinkers, particular attention is given to his philosophical system, which attempts to synthesize the three categories of history, phenomenology, and social engagement within the context of Catholic orthodoxy. Controversially, he calls his approach a method of immanence. The approach and worldview of the Modernists is contrasted with that of Neoscholasticism.

This chapter discusses certain exegetical challenges posed by Kant’s logic corpus, which comprises the Logic compiled by Jäsche, Kant’s notes on logic, transcripts of his logic lectures, and remarks about logic in his own publications. It argues for a “history of philosophical problems” method by which to reconstruct a Kantian theory of logic that is maximally coherent, philosophically interesting, and historically significant. To ensure a principled application of this method, the chapter considers Kant’s conception of history against the background of the controversy between eclecticism and systematic philosophy that shaped the German philosophical discourse during the early eighteenth century. It thereby looks for an angle to make educated decisions about how to select materials from each of the periods considered in the book and builds a historical narrative that can best inform our understanding of Kant’s theory of logic.

This chapter examines the political ideas of Immanuel Kant. Kant is widely regarded as a precursor to current political liberalism. There are many aspects of Kant's political philosophy, including his property argument, that remain poorly understood and unjustly neglected. Many other aspects, including his cosmopolitanism, reveal Kant as perhaps one of the most systematic and consistent political thinkers. Underlying all these aspects of his political philosophy is an abiding commitment to his epistemological method of transcendental idealism. After providing a short biography of Kant, this chapter considers his epistemology as well as the relationship between virtue and justice in his practical philosophy. It also explores a number of themes in Kant's political thinking, including the idea of external freedom, the nature of political obligation, the vindication of property rights, the denial of a right to revolution, and the cosmopolitan scope of Kantian justice.

Das Anliegen dieses Werkes ist es explizit nicht, professionelle Moderator*innen auszubilden, sondern Studierende dazu zu befähigen, an zwischenmenschlicher Interaktion effektiver teilnehmen zu können. Sie sollen in der Lage sein, Gespräche reibungslos, zielorientiert und kompetent auszuführen und Interaktionsprozesse kritisch zu reflektieren. Die vorgestellten Theorien und Konzepte sind dabei auf unterschiedliche Kontexte im universitären, wissenschaftlichen, beruflichen, aber auch privaten Kontext anwendbar. Als Grundlage wird auf grundlegende theoretische Aspekte der speziellen Art der Kommunikation, der Moderation, eingegangen. Zusätzlich werden konkrete Tools und Methoden bearbeitet, praktisch ausprobiert und reflektiert, mit denen man die Moderationskompetenz ausbauen kann.

Das Fach Sport ist auch nach den aktuellen Vereinbarungen der Kultusministerkonferenz eines der wenigen Fächer, die vom ersten Schuljahr an bis zum Ende der gymnasialen Oberstufe in der Stundentafel als Pflichtfach verankert sind. Zugleich ist Sport jedoch das einzige Fach, das in vielen Bundesländern nur unter besonderen Bedingungen Abiturfach sein kann. Kann Sport als "praktisches Fach" so unterrichtet werden, dass in einer Abiturprüfung Leistungen erreicht werden, die dem wissenschaftspropädeutischen Anspruch der gymnasialen Oberstufe genügen? Das war die Frage eines Schulversuchs ("Erprobungsvorhaben"), der von 1999 bis 2008 zunächst an 24, dann an 54 Gymnasien und Gesamtschulen in Nordrhein-Westfalen durchgeführt wurde und dessen Ergebnisse nicht nur für das Bundesland NRW von Bedeutung sein dürften. Der Schulversuch wurde von einem sportpädagogisch interessierten Forschungsverbund der Universität Bielefeld und der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln begleitet. Nach zehn Jahren wissenschaftlicher Begleitung dokumentiert dieses Buch die politische und fachliche Auseinandersetzung um Konzeption und Status des Faches Sport in der Oberstufe im größten Bundesland. Methodik und ausgewählte Ergebnisse der Begleitforschung werden dargestellt und in fachdidaktischem Interesse diskutiert. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage nach der Verknüpfung von "Praxis" (Können) und "Theorie" (Wissen). Das Buch erschließt damit ein Beispiel anwendungsorientierter Schulforschung, die sowohl der didaktischen Begründung des Faches als auch seiner Qualitätsentwicklung dienen möchte.
