Abstract:
Child sexual abuse is an ongoing societal problem, causing severe trauma to vulnerable individuals and evoking all manner of coping strategies in managing the aftermath of their experiences.  Whilst extensive research has directed attention onto sexual abuse and the coping strategies that result from such trauma, very few studies have concentrated on the professional perceptions when supporting sexually abused girls using coping strategies to combat their trauma. Therefore, this research intends to provide an exploration into how professionals perceive the coping strategies used by sexually abused girls in a non-governmental organisation (NGO) residential girl’s home in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Using semistructured interviews via email and individual video recorded zoom meetings from three participants: comprising of a director/counsellor, English teacher, and practitioner. The findings suggested that cultural/societal background, therapies, and interventions have led to or encouraged positive or negative outcomes and coping strategies aside from the sexual abuse trauma.

Abstract:
A complete study (technique, themes, iconography) of the mural paintings in the buddhist shrines of sri lanka, executed by the local "sittara" painters in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries at the zenith of the kandyan kingdom (the last sinhalese kingdom) and after its fall and its annexation by the british. Some of these paintings are ornemental but most of them are narrative, illustrating the religious and historical past of the island and above all many buddhist themes (buddha gotama's life, jataka. . . ). They form a quite original pictorial production in the art of the indian world

De, Silva Wasana. "Performing place : natural landscape, cultural place, performances of Sri Lankan traditional settlements : Kandy and Lankathilaka." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2014. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/28213/.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional settlement patterns in Sri Lanka reflect a sense of harmony between built forms, architecture and their natural landscape context. In contrast to this, many new developments neglect or overpower natural landscape features. In traditional societies a range of sites are celebrated through the performance of ritual activities which create significant distinctive places and dwelling patterns. This research focuses on traditional settlements of Sri Lanka to examine emerging architecture and built space, focusing on the relationships between natural landscape, cultural place and the role of ritual and performance. A number of pilot case studies followed by an in depth comparative case study of a city and a village - Kandy and Lankathilaka respectively - address the topic by examining how common narratives perform in contrasting landscape locations. The thesis develops the theoretical concept of the ‘Performative phenomenon’ as a means of understanding the dynamic nature of cultural place and landscape in the Sri Lankan context. A theoretical framework and case study method is established by combining aspects of phenomenology, anthropology, psychology, ethnography, landscape theory, and architectural interpretation. A wide range of literature review draws on key concepts such as chora and topos, dwelling, ideal forms, Mitte and actor-network-theory to theorise how ‘place’ emerges through cultural practices in space and time. Fieldwork and archival research provide detailed evidence of site specific practices, most notably in the Asala perahera festivals which are repeated at both case study locations. A pattern matching technique is applied for analysing data, presented in tables, diagrams, maps and illustrations. In both case studies, the experience of ideal forms and dwelling is evident throughout the performing process of Asala perahera. Place is produced by repeated events, such as, parading, marking geometrical patterns, sound performing, narrating, body performing and so on, producing and sustaining an inter-related network of performers and landscape. It is concluded that Kandy city is experienced as an ‘inside’ enclosed within three mountains, while Lankathilaka village is experienced as a divine centre. Through locally specific performative processes, common ideal forms continue to flourish, shaped by the natural landscape and architecture, which reflect the chora of the place.

Prathapage, Sujeewa. "The impact of rural poverty on human development in Sri Lanka : A case study from a village in Kandy District." Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Geography, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-929.

Full text
Abstract:

The study has examined the impacts of rural poverty on human development in Sri Lanka. Recently, human development became one of the most important facts of the development process. Meanwhile it is obvious that the two concepts of ‘human development’ and ‘poverty’have a close relationship. Therefore it is important to identify this relationship to overcome the poverty and increase the quality of human development. When the poverty incident is high, it automatically leads to human poverty and adversely affects human development. Sri Lanka has paid attention to overcome the problem of poverty since her independence, but still there are considerable amount of the population living below the national poverty line.

This research focuses on key questions regarding rural poverty and human development in Sri Lanka. The main objective of the research is to explore the relationship between the poverty and the human development situation of the selected study area. The study used both quantitative and qualitative research method. Also relevant data for the study were gathered from the secondary as well as primary sources. The main primary data collection methods were questionnaire survey, household interviews and key informant interviews.

To address the human development perspective of poverty, this research used Amartya Sen’s capability approach as the main theoretical approach and livelihoods approach as a tool to make the capability approach operational.

The village Madugalla (North) is located in the Udadumbara Divisional Secretariat Division in Kandy District and it is a remote and rural village. Most of the villagers’ main economic activity is agriculture and at the moment they have faced a number of difficulties due to unfavourable climatic conditions of the area. This situation adversely influenced people’s living standard. Due to this situation, to escape poverty and secure survival, they used various types of livelihoods strategies. But the study revealed that most of these livelihood strategies are not sustainable. Also in terms of assets they are in a vulnerable situation. This situation has influenced their present poverty and low human development condition and deprivation of more valuable capabilities.

The present situation of the village is a result of number of factors which directly or indirectly affect the rural economy in Sri Lanka. The study found that the main reason for their poverty situation is low income. Low income is connected to the employment situation of the village. In terms of the Human development situation the lack of educational attainment of the elderly people of the village has negatively affected their present living standard.

Also the study focused on the evaluation of present poverty alleviation program (Samurdhi) in peoples’ perspective. The result shows that many of the people do not have a trust on the program’s potential to overcome their poverty situation. It seems that many people use the benefits they receiving form the Samurdhi only as a way of survival. Those who try to overcome the poverty situation through the Samurdhi program are limited.

Further peoples’ personal views on poverty and their plans to overcome poverty situation and upgrade their human development were examined through the interviews. The final result revealed that many people don’t have any clear idea about poverty. But according to their ideas they have experienced poverty in many ways. Many of them expressed poverty as lack of basic needs. Also they have no any reliable plans to overcome the problem.

Somasunderam, Ramesh. "British infiltration of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in the nineteenth century : a study of the D'Oyly papers between 1805 and 1818." University of Western Australia. History Discipline Group, 2008. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2008.0229.

Full text
Abstract:
The proposed study is to examine the contribution made by John D'Oyly, a British Civil Servant, to the British acquisition and control of the whole of Ceylon. It is also aimed to examine the history of this period (between 1805-1818) in Ceylon as a part of British colonial expansion in South Asia focusing on the policy of infiltration which was used by the British as a method of expanding and consolidating their power and influence. In The Cambridge Illustrated History of the British Empire, published in 1996, P.J. Marshall submitted that the British had become a major political force on the south east coast of the Indian subcontinent, and had become the real rulers of the wealthy province of Bengal by the end of the eighteenth century. He further submits that the success of the British was mainly due to their ability to infiltrate into the internal politics of local states and kingdoms, and thereby dominate some of these political entities rather than overcome and destroy them by the use of military force. This process of infiltration will be examined in detail in the study of British relations with the Kandyan Kingdom, which was situated in the centre of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), and was the only local kingdom then in existence as an independent political entity. The primary documents to be studied are those that relate to the British relations with the Kandyan Kingdom between 1805 and 1818, which covers the career of John D'Oyly as a civil servant working in Ceylon. He was the principal figure used by the British in their dealings with the Kandyan Kingdom, due mainly to his proficiency in the Sinhalese language and his knowledge of the customs and manners of the local people. His official diary, covering between the periods of 1810 and 1815, is one of the major sources of this study, examining the methods of infiltration. What is attempted in this Thesis is to examine this new theoretical approach of infiltration (submitted by P.J. Marshall) to the history of British relations with the Kandyan Kingdom between the periods of 1805 to 1818. This study is associated therefore with giving a new dimension to D'Oyly's work as a civil servant, and also to give a deeper reason for British expansion in Ceylon (as much as in Asia) in the context of the broader British strategic objectives. It strives to give a new meaning to the primary documents available in studying British Kandyan relations, as a part of the successful political expansion of the British in India and Asia.

Abstract:
This thesis seeks to verify the concept of so-called resource curse at the beginning of the new millennium. The theoretical part defines the symptoms of the alleged curse, curse transmission channels and criticism of the concept. Compared to other studies dealing with the theme of the resource curse this work is not focused on just one transmission channel. The practical part verifies several hypotheses established by comparing research papers on impacts of natural resources. The validity of the Prebisch-Singer hypothesis, Dutch disease symptoms and a negative impact on political institutions (inclination toward authoritarianism, high level of corruption, high government spending, low efficiency of economic and political decision-making and low investment in education) is verified. For the analysis have been selected two African countries (Nigeria and Botswana) and two advanced countries (Canada and Norway). The last part of this thesis provides policy implications. The results confirm the Prebisch-Singer hypothesis for selected commodities in the long term and some of the symptoms of Dutch disease at the beginning of the new millennium. Hypotheses regarding the impact on the political institutions have not been confirmed, since the results varied across the countries. The high vulnerability of the countries to movements in commodity prices was found.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The following dissertation is an imagological, comparative and postcolonial research about the representations of Africa and Africans in different works of contemporary German literature, which are hypertextually connected to works of European colonial literature. By taking 1m Kongo by Urs Widmer and Kain und Abel in Afrika by Hans Christoph Buch, it scrutinizes, on an exemplary basis and in new ways, the relationship of these post-colonial hypertexts to their underlying colonial subtexts: Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and Caput Nili by Richard Kandt. It is focused on evaluating, with the help of criteria developed within the postcolonial criticism, whether the selected writings succeed in overcoming the ethnocentric tendencies that characterise the literary reflexes of the ethnographie encounter with the Other abroad, there by producing images that contribute to the renewal of the representations of otherness and foreignness within the contemporary German literature

Friesen, Anita. "Tourism planning for Kandy, Sri Lanka : a framework." Thesis, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/9645.

Full text
Abstract:
The city of Kandy, located in the central hill-region of Sri Lanka, is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Both foreign and domestic travelers are attracted to the city's natural beauty, mild climate, historical and cultural significance, and wide variety of attractions. This thesis develops a framework of recommendations for tourism planning based upon a thorough analysis of the various elements of tourism in Kandy. This is achieved through an examination of the historical, social, physical, economic, political, cultural and institutional dimensions of tourism within Kandy and by exploring the nature of the linkages between these elements. The results of this study are derived from several types of research, including an analysis of statistical sources, a review of the tourism planning literature, participatory observation of the tourist experience in Kandy, interviews with individuals involved in the tourism industry in Kandy, a tourism planning workshop held in Kandy, and a questionnaire given to a sample of tourists. Tourism development in Kandy has not been accompanied by the anticipated scale and distribution of benefits to the local population. In addition, a number of negative social, cultural and environmental impacts have resulted from tourism which have adversely affected the quality of life of residents. If pursued as it has been in the past, future tourism development in Kandy could result in a magnification of these negative impacts, thereby placing further demands on the natural resources and municipal infrastructure systems, and leading to an increase in undesirable cultural and social change. Without appropriate planning, increased tourism development could result in degradation in the tourism product and a decline in the tourism industry. This thesis argues that if tourism development for Kandy is planned in a manner that balances the principles of economic viability, environmental consciousness, cultural sensitivity, social responsibility and tourist satisfaction, it could potentially lead to minimized negative repercussions, magnified positive impacts, and an improved quality of life for the local population.

Bhanjee, Tariq Nizar. "Upgrading an informal settlement : the role of tenure security in Mahaiyawa, Kandy, Sri Lanka." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/10564.

Full text
Abstract:
The urban poor in many developing countries live in informal settlements which are becoming more congested due to the increasing population and urbanization. The infrastructure services and housing in these informal settlements is rapidly deteriorating and seriously affecting the health and well being of the inhabitants. Upgrading improves the living environment of these settlements. Tenure security is one, among many factors that influences upgrading. A sense of security is necessary for investment of time, resources and money to occur in upgrading. Once a sense of security is established, several other factors that may be independent of tenure security, influence upgrading. This study determines the factors that affect physical upgrading (housing and infrastructure services) in the low-income settlement of Mahaiyawa, in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Mahaiyawa is the largest low-income settlement in Kandy, which is extremely congested and in dire need of upgrading. The impact of tenure security, as well as the other factors that influence upgrading, is examined. A comprehensive literature review regarding tenure security and upgrading was conducted prior to the three-month field research. Through participant observation and a mapping exercise, the physical and social aspects of the settlement were assessed. The key methodology for the study was interviews. Questions for the interviews were based on the literature review and previous studies conducted in Mahaiyawa. Twenty-two key-informant interviews and eighteen community interviews were conducted. A questionnaire was used to cross-check the community interviews. Based on the analysis of the interviews, recommendations regarding upgrading were provided. The study revealed that the upgrading was taking place through the self-help approach, regardless of legal tenure. The prevalence of unauthorized units suggested that perceived security was critical for upgrading. No evictions, provision of urban services and identification cards, employment security and a sense of community established through a long residency, supported this sense of security. Access to financial resources dependent upon saving capacity, employment security and credit access, seemed to be the most critical factor affecting upgrading after a sense of security was established. Other factors such as ethnicity, community participation, skill levels and availability of building materials, institutional resources, and power dynamics and politics, also affected upgrading.

"Empowerment, Capabilities, and Gender Constraints in Female Microentrepreneurship: A study of Kandy, Sri Lanka." Tulane University, 2018.

Abstract:

Abstract This research seeks to further the understanding of female microentrepreneurship as it is conceptualized and applied to initiatives that supporting women’s economic and social empowerment. Social norms, institutional discrimination, and gender constraints define the activities and persons that are entrepreneurial, thereby affecting female microenterprise motivations, characteristics, and success. In addition, contemporary microenterprise initiatives draw on women’s stereotypical caret-taking roles to justify their economic development, while female microenterprises remain distinguishable by their informality, small size, and low returns. The enterprises created through resource allocation programs, such as microcredit, are largely informal and home-based subsistence enterprises that offer a low-quality employment option to women and fail to challenge or expand existing gender constraints. Data from focus group participants and analysis of survey responses from 487 female microentrepreneurs in Kandy, Sri Lanka are used to compare female microentrepreneurial success in terms of both financial and empowerment outcomes. A novel conceptualization of the capabilities approach is presented and utilized to build an original analytical framework that redefines success in terms of women’s capabilities: whether female microentrepreneurship expands what they can be and do. An iterative approach to defining success outcomes establishes that adding empowerment indicators to definitions of success highlight different gender constraints to female microentrepreneurship than purely financial measures. Group differences provide an analysis of the gender constraints that are more prevalent among those meeting compound definitions of success and those who do not. A logistic regression of gender constraints, including personal household, and business characteristics, and women’s capabilities (as a proxy for empowerment), determines the impact of each constraint on the likelihood of being successful. The results suggest that, at the microenterprise level, female entrepreneurs are constrained by social and household norms that reduce their capabilities and enterprise success. Women’s hybrid entrepreneurial motivations, driven by their own economic and household considerations rather than outcomes desired by development initiatives, are established as offering fertile ground for future research, specifically regarding the impact of the household context. It is suggested that the motivations are distinct from those of women operating larger SMEs and require specific attention

Ranjith, J. G. Sri. "Governance and community participation : a collective approach for upgrading the Mahaiyawa slum community in Kandy, Sri Lanka." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/10753.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore a feasible approach for upgrading the largest slum community, known as Mahaiyawa, in the inner city area of the Kandy, Sri Lanka. The community has been living in this location for over three generations, but the existing government institutional structure has not responded to ensure the economic, social and environmental well-being of the people. The existing practices of the urban governmental system to solve the problems of the community have not been successful. Instead, the further fragmentation of urban institutional network is the norm in Kandy. Considering the empirical evidence of institutional constraints and conflicts, the thesis mainly focuses on the lack of local government capacity as a crucial factor to be addressed in taking measures for upgrading the slum community. Although Sri Lanka implemented a decentralization policy at the beginning of 1980s, the functional autonomy of the local governments is still limited due to a number of factors. The lack of local governments' capacity is identified in four major areas, i.e. fiscal powers, access to financial resources, legal authority and professionally qualified personnel. This impairs accountability, transparency, management efficiency and the active role of civil society groups in governance. The thesis argues that capacity-building of the local government through decentralization of powers is a necessary policy reform, but this is not a sufficient condition for creating a new form of good governance. It requires both the ability and the collective responsibility of local authorities, actors in civil society, including representatives of the slum communities, if a new form of governance is to be created for addressing the problems of slum communities. The thesis concludes that the inability to solve the problems of Mahaiyawa slum community is mainly due to the lack of local government capacity, and therefore, certain aspects of the local governments' capacity should be strengthened. Capacity-building of local government necessarily involves promotion of collective planning and implementation to solve the problems for upgrading the Mahaiyawa slum community. This study suggests that any effort to upgrade the slum community or relocate it to another area should be made in consultation and negotiation with the community and its leaders, to sufficiently address their concerns, particularly regarding ethnicity, culture and social aspects, and their locational dependency on the city for economic reasons.

Abstract:
In current era of globalization when cultural diplomacy became one of the inherent tools of "soft power" of a foreign policy, it is relevant to research on the place of cultural diplomacy in foreign policy portfolio of nation-states. The focus of this thesis is to evaluate the attitudes of the Canadian government towards cultural diplomacy from 1990s until today. In 1995, Canadian values and culture became one of the three pillars of Canadian foreign policy. The author therefore attempted to map whether cultural diplomacy became a coherent and strategic tool of the Canadian foreign policy during this era. By analyzing the tools of the Canadian cultural diplomacy of the Liberal governments of Jean Chretien, Paul Martin and the present Conservative government of Stephen Harper, the author seeks to answer whether we are witnessing a gradual eclipse of cultural diplomacy as a means of soft power under the Harper administration. The research of government documents and cultural diplomacy programs along with the analysis of interviews with important government officials suggest that the cultural diplomacy was not practiced as a strategic tool in foreign policy management until the third election term of Jean Chretien in the year of 2000. Since then we can track fulfilling the Third Pillar as an...

This Masetr thesis looks into weathering pits of nature park Česká Kanada. The theoretical part of the thesis investigates research of weathering pits done in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. The practical part deals with weathering pit-bearing as well as weathering pitabsent blocks of rock within the study area. It describes their geological-geomorphological environment and attempts to find differences between the weathering pit-bearing and absent blocks (the presence of cracks, altitude, landforms, shape of the rock block and more). Furthermore it was established that a suitable rock block morphology (respectively the existence of horizontal plane) is important for formation of weathering pits. It also studies water properties in selected weathering pits, relationship of overhangs to prevailing wind directions. A correlation between overhang and wind direction was found in sense that NW to W winds correspond with overhang formation on eastern sides of weathering pits. Water in weathering pit of Čertův kámen located in sunny bare landscape shows significantly different properties in comparison with water properties of remaining weathering pits located in forrested areas.

Abstract:
This dissertation is about power, humour and various comic and ironic strategies contemporary Native writers and artists apply in their works to challenge the outdated Indian stereotypes and obsolete systems of cultural and aesthetic representation. The artists employ a combination of comedy and irony as favoured modes of expression in order to contest, subvert and critically deconstruct the oppressive hegemonic ideologies and power structures still present in Canada and the United States. Their novels, poetry, essays, films, documentaries, theatre performances, paintings and other works of art strive to emphasize the marginalization and rights of all Native people in North America who have suffered over the hundreds of years of colonization, acculturation and violent cultural appropriation. In the last decade, there have been growing calls from academia, Native communities as well as the government, to reconceptualise the bi-cultural politics between the First Nation peoples and the Canadian nation-state. A great amount of models for an inclusionary and multifaceted identity politics have been proposed by several Canadian cultural analysts and critics, including for example Diana Brydon, Smaro Kamboureli, and Lily Cho. However, before they can be successfully implemented, a creation of an alternative space...

Abstract:
The diploma thesis focuses on the period of the superpower rivalry of the Cold War, respectively, on the 1960's, and an interesting phenomenon of the intermediary role. At that time, Canada and Czechoslovakia took on tasks far beyond the importance of their bilateral relations with Cuba. They often made significant efforts and spent considerable resources. Furthermore, the work compares the nature of mediation of relations between Cuba and the great powers on the examples of these countries and tries to reveal their connections. More precisely, the work is interested in deciphering the motivations of Canada and Czechoslovakia for the initiative of the role of mediator between Cuba and the individual blocs. These states played this role in the relationship between Cuba and the Western countries in the case of Canada and Cuba and the Eastern bloc in the case of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. The Kenneth Waltz's theoretical approach of bipolar equilibrium will be used and analyzed as one of the possible explanations. From a methodological point of view, the work uses the Mill's method of difference and comparative history. Nowadays, anonymous sperm donation is indeed a globally discussed topic: the popularity of the use of assisted reproduction technology for the purpose of conception is directly proportional to increasing infertility and technological progress.
