Kangaroo care (KC) is a cost-efficient method to increase infant-parent bonding and neonatal health outcomes worldwide. Despite evidence supporting KC in critically ill infants, nursing perceptions regarding patient safety and interrupted work flow continued to impede practice in the local high-tech neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Their current policy failed to address the 2-person transfer method recommended for safe practice. In addition, both staff and parents lacked training and education regarding the benefits and feasibility of KC. This doctoral project aimed to decrease practice ba

More than half a million infants are born preterm each year in the United States. Preterm infants often undergo many painful procedures starting minutes after birth. A preterm infant may have as many as 10 painful procedures in a 24 hour period. The experience of pain leads to negative physiological responses, creating additional risks for the preterm infants' immediate and long-term health. Research demonstrates that infants are often undertreated for pain. Kangaroo care is a promising, non-pharmacologic analgesic, implemented as skin-to-skin contact between the infant and a caregiver. KMC essentially uses the mother as a natural incubator. According to this principle, LBW babies are placed to the mother’s chest in an upright position, where maternal body heat can help co

Title: Addressing the context and way forward for Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health issues in Pakistan Abstract Background Pakistan has failed to achieve the Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the United Nations in 2000. At present Pakistan has the third highest burden of maternal and neonatal mortality globally estimated to be 270 per 100,000 live births and 55 per 1000 live births respectively. Many factors are known to contribute to this high burden of mortality among women and children. Of these, key issues such as low cov

Premature birth is a frequent occurrence even in developed countries. Technological advances have increased survival rates even for very premature. Prematurity is a risk factor for much morbidity, including developmental delay, deficits in somatic growth and difficulty of affectionate bonds with family. The Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) has emerged as an alternative treatment of low birth weight infants, being part of the national policy of humanization in health, aiming higher attachment, breastfeeding promotion, improved development and security, including how to handle the baby and family rela
