Abstract:
<p><span lang="EN-US">This research investigates challenges and advancements in neural machine translation (NMT), specifically targeting English-to-Kannada translation. Emphasizing the scarcity of data and linguistic complexity in low-resource languages (LRL), particularly Kannada, the study underscores the need for specialized techniques. Starting with exploration of Kannada's historical and cultural significance, the paper highlights critical importance of linguistic comprehension. The primary objective is to develop robust NMT models for precise and contextually relevant translations in low-resource scenarios. The novelty of this research lies in its innovative approach to Kannada NMT challenges, incorporating comprehensive examination of historical and cultural context to establish strong linguistic foundation. Motivated by the urgency to address translation needs in LRL, the paper proposes novel strategies, advocating notably for backtranslation to generate synthetic parallel corpora. Rigorous testing, including bilingual evaluation understudy (BLEU) score assessments, evaluates effectiveness of these proposed approaches. Beyond assessing backtranslation, the study explores challenges faced by Kannada NMT in handling dialectical and spelling variations. The research reports substantial 83-percentage-point average increase in BLEU scores, contingent on aligning unique Kannada terms with the same domain as existing occurrences. This study contributes significantly to Kannada natural language processing by offering novel insights into NMT intricacies and providing practical solutions for enhancing translation accuracy in low-resource settings.</span></p>

Abstract:
In the digital document analysis, handwritten character recognition is a challenging area. Various methods are proposed in the literature to identify the strike-outs in various languages. Kannada handwritten classification is a crucial machine vision problem due to its various practical applications in the development of recognition systems. Identifying of strikeout string on the given Kannada statement is an important challenge to develop robust recognition system. In the present study, pre-trained models such as DenseNet121, EficientNetB0, MobileNet, InceptionResNetV2 are used to recognize strikeout Kannada words. Experimental analysis indicates that EficientNetB0 performed better for strikeout Kannada words and InceptionResNetV2 results in higher performance for non-strikeout Kannada words.

Abstract:
The data of kharif rice yield and the weather parameters from 1985 to 2009 is used for developing statistical models for three coastal districts of Karnataka. These pre-harvest forecasting models were developed for rice yield forecasts for Dakshin Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts respectively. The weather indices like Z21, Z251 and Time were able to forecast the yield of rice for Udupi district. Similarly Z120, Z150 and Z241 were found to be most efficient predictors for Dakshin Kannada district. Only one variable i.e. Z451 was found to be able to forecast the rice yield in Uttar Kannada district. The validation of the model was done for a period of three years from 2010-2012. The forecasting models were able to explain the inter annual variation in the rice production to an extent of 86, 95 and 74% for Dakshin Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts respectively. Hence these models can be used to forecastrice yield two months before harvest.

Abstract:
Objectives: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is a life-limiting illness that leads to significant health-related suffering for the patients and their caregivers. Moreover, disease-directed options such as dialysis and renal transplant might not be universally accessible. Inadequate assessment and management of symptoms often lead to diminished quality of life. For evaluating symptoms and their associated distress, various tools have been identified. However, these are not available for the native Kannada-speaking population for assessing ESKD symptom burden. In this study, we determined the reliability and validity of the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System Revised Renal (ESAS-r: Renal) in Kannada-speaking ESKD patients. Materials and Methods: ESAS-r: Renal English version was translated into Kannada using the forward and backward method. The translated version was endorsed by Nephrology, Palliative care, Dialysis technology and Nursing experts. As a pilot study, 12 ESKD patients evaluated the content of the questionnaires for appropriateness and relevance. The ESAS-r: Renal Kannada version was validated by administering this tool to 45 patients twice a fortnight. Result: The translated ESAS-r: Renal Kannada version questionnaire had an acceptable face and content validity. Experts’ opinion was assessed by content validity ratio (CVR), and the value of CVR of ESAS-r: Renal Kannada version was-‘1’-. Internal consistency of the tool was assessed among Kannada-speaking ESKD patients; its Cronbach’s α was 0.785, and test-retest validity was 0.896. Conclusion: The validated Kannada version of ESAS-r: Renal was reliable and valid for assessing symptom burden in ESKD patients.

Abstract: The task of automatic handwriting recognition is critical. This can be a difficult subject, and it has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. In the realm of picture grouping, handwritten character recognition is a problem. Handwritten characters are difficult to decipher since various people have distinct handwriting styles. For decades, researchers have been focusing on character identification in Latin handwriting. Kannada has had fewer studies conducted on it. Our "Kannada Text Recognition" research and effort attempts to classify and recognize characters written in Kannada, a south Indian language. The characters are taken from written documents, preprocessed with numpy and OpenCV, and then run through a CNN.

Abstract:
This paper presents an automated Kannada subtitle generator from Kannada video which is implemented to assist people with auditory problems for watching videos. Henceforth the subtitle generation has become an important task for supporting such special people and it integrates an audio extraction and a speech recognition module. Three phases of the proposed technique were implemented, such as extracting audio from video, Recognition of Speech and Generation of Subtitle. An adaptive speech recognition module is implemented AMFCC for feature extraction which was an alternative to the most commonly used FFT. Hankel transform which was similar to FFT, but includes no elementary particles such as FFT. In addition to it, in the decoder acoustic module, such as Adaptive Hidden Markov Model using the Baum-Welch algorithm is utilized instead of a Viterbi algorithm to reduce the computational time and memory usage. The text file from the speech recognition module is rendered to synchronize the missing offset with the video using parallel processing by defining the start time, the end time, the delay time. Best outcomes are demonstrated by the experimental results of the proposed technique with 98.4% of accuracy compare with existing techniques. The proposed technique which gives 3.8% better accuracy performance compare with existing technique i.e. MFCC, DNN and CNN.

Paris, EPHE, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999EPHE4049.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Shenoy, Sunaina. "Assessing English Language Learners In L1 Kannada And L2 English To Identify Students Who Are At Risk For Language Learning Disabilities." Thesis, University of California, Berkeley, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3720823.

Abstract:

This study offers a mixed-methods analyses of formal and informal screening tools in L1 and L2 to identify English Language Learners in who are “at risk” for language learning disabilities. It was conducted in Bangalore, India and the sample consisted of 104 participants in Grades 2-5 from low, middle and high-income private schools. Teachers currently use school-based performance scores in English to classify students as persistent low-achievers. The purpose of this study was to provide teachers with a screening tool in both L1 Kannada and L2 English to be able classify two sub-populations of low-achieving students: students who are delayed in the second language acquisition process and students who are at risk for an underlying language learning disability.

Two formal bilingual screening tools were adapted and rendered culturally relevant in both British English and Kannada, namely the Preschool Language Scale 5 Screening Test (Zimmerman, Steiner, & Pond, 2012) and the Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals 5 Screening Test (Semel, Wiig, & Secord, 2013). Both tests were efficacious in assessing general language ability, and there was a statistically significant relationship between the test scores. The PLS 5 was used to compare language competencies across age, as the same test that was developed for 7-year olds was administered to all students in the population, whose ages ranged from 7-10 years. Quantitative analysis revealed a statistically significant difference between 7-8 year olds and 9-10 year olds in their English scores but not in their Kannada scores, suggesting that L2 English was maintained as an academic language while L1 Kannada was not. The CELF 5 Test was used to classify students as “bilingual” (if they passed both tests in L1 and L2), “dominant L1”(if they only passed the Kannada test), “dominant L2” (if they only passed the English test) and “at risk for a language learning disability” (if they did not pass either the L1 or L2 tests). When CELF 5 scores were compared to school-based assessment scores, more than half of the students who were classified as being “at risk” by their teachers turned out to be dominant in their L2 according to their CELF5 classification.

Four informal screening tools were used for the study: Narrative Assessment, Parent Questionnaire, Teacher Interview and Classroom Observation. Students’ narrative skills were assessed using the Narrative Scoring Scheme (Heilmann et al, 2010). A high degree of overlap was observed between the students’ NSS scores and their CELF5 scores. Students who were identified as being “dominant L1 or L2” according to their CELF5 scores, also got an overall “proficient” classification on the NSS and students who were considered “at risk” by the CELF 5, were classified as “minimal” or “emerging” in their narrative skills. Quantitative analysis revealed that the CELF5 English and Kannada scores significantly predicted students’ NSS scores.

The other informal tools, the parent questionnaire, teacher interview and classroom observation checklist were efficacious in pinpointing external factors such as parents’ educational attainment, parents’ income levels, pedagogical practices, and special education resources, that are important when interpreting students’ performance scores across low, middle and high-income schools. Parents’ educational attainment predicted income levels in the low-income school and reading frequency in the middle-high income schools respectively.

Qualitative analyses of the teacher interviews emphasized the differences in language of instruction between low-income and middle-high income schools; whereas teachers in the former school alternated between English and Kannada, teachers in the latter schools used English only. The teacher interviews were also useful in highlighting the special education support at each school site: (a) in the low-income school, teachers treated low-achieving students as one group and they received small group instruction that targeted rote-memorization of the content related to school exams; (b) in the middle-income school, teachers viewed special education as occurring outside the purview of their classrooms, as the school had a moderate-severe special education program on the school site, but no resources for students with mild-moderate disabilities; and (c) in the high-income school, teachers followed an inclusive special education model and had access to a special education department on the school site as well as a consultancy service for assessment and intervention of students with disabilities.

Finally, qualitative analyses of the classroom observation checklist stressed the pedagogical differences across the three schools, with low and middle income schools focusing more on students’ content knowledge and rote memorization skills and high-income schools focusing more on students’ presentation skills and conceptual knowledge. The study has implications for theoretical and applied issues concerning assessment, differentiation of language learning difference versus disability in ELLs and models and approaches for intervention.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Oppimispelien historiaa tutkittaessa voidaan palata ajassa taaksepäin aina antiikin Roomaan saakka.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the nature of ‘front’ along the front/back axis. The languages taken up for the study are Bengali, a language belonging to Indo-Aryan language family, and Kannada, a language belonging to Dravidian language family. The terms for denoting ‘front’ for Bengali are ‘samne’ and ‘aage’ and for Kannada are ‘yeduru’ and ‘munde’. Experience and embodiment of spatial arrangements play an important role in the spatial cognition, and language use takes into account the different points of view. Many factors such as proximity, vantage point, specificity, etc. play an important role in describing a given situation. It is worth mentioning that the choice of the usages of the words for denoting ‘front’ as location or direction has been seen as different in some situations and overlapping in others. The data were collected using a questionnaire which aimed to elicit the expressions for ‘front’ for the entities, whose relationship is described in terms of Figure and Ground (Talmy, 1983; 2000), from the speakers of both the above mentioned languages, and then analysed for the factors involved.
