Abstract:
Basic education policy in Nigeria is free, universal and compulsory for the first nine years of schooling. The policy envisaged a drastic reduction in the reluctance of parents/guardians towards basic education in parts of Nigeria where the pursuit of qur’anic education remained predominant. So far, the free education programme had yielded less than desirable results as the number of Out of School Children (OOSC) remain largely and increasingly unacceptable, thus necessitating a study that investigated stakeholders’ perspectives on the extent to which awareness and the participation in schooling amongst school age children has been achieved. Hence, the level of awareness and how stakeholders’ perspectives may be impacting on universal basic education policy implementation vis-à-vis out of school children phenomenon in Nigeria were examined. In fulfilling the objective of the study, the respondents’ perspectives were obtained through a multi-stage sampling technique. The selection of the state was purpose driven; hence purposive sampling of Kano State, and within Kano metropolis, North-western Nigeria, all the four Local government within the metropolis namely: Taurani, Fegge, Nasarawa and Kano Municipal Council were Local Education Authorities -LEAs were purposively selected. Further, 30 facilitators of qur’anic schools who were selected from each of the 4 LEAs in Kano metropolis amounting to 120 facilitators (respondents) that were sampled, and a structured questionnaire was administered to them. Findings revealed a high level of awareness of stakeholders on the consequences of non-schooling. However, it was inferred that the aged facilitators of the qur’anic schools could affect the effort and process of integrating basic education programmes into the qur’anic schools thus exacerbating the exclusion of children from the formal education worsening OOSC phenomenon. Recommendations were made as follows: that qur’anic school, class-size, class-management and facilitations processes should be standardized, to enhance curriculum integration and inclusiveness. Moreover, enlightenment of stakeholders be intensified

Abstract:
The research is aimed at assessing Solid Waste Management in Kano State Owned Tertiary Institutions. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used. Key informant interview was conducted with the head of cleaners using purposive sampling technique. The data collected was analyzed and presented using tables. The research revealed that the type of waste that is most generated in the schools are polythene, papers and dead leaves. The research also discovered that the numbers of cleaners are not enough in the study area when compared to the large portion they are assigned to work on. Also the research discovered that the schools have one main waste collection point with only the School of Management Studies which has two collection points. However, to make waste disposal simpler, tiny drums are positioned throughout the schools in various locations. Some of the major challenges faced in Waste Management in the Schools are lack of cleaning equipment, lack of cooperation from students and problem of managing the workers as most of them are uneducated and are not permanent workers. It was recommended that more cleaners should be employed and the school management should provide more working equipment like brooms, rake, dustbins, cutlass etc. Also the welfare and working condition of the workers should be improved.

Abstract:
Tsangaya teachers are the people who devoted their time, energy and resources for the free and voluntary teaching of the Holy Qur’an to the offspring of their communities in northern Nigeria. Prior to the advent of the colonial administrators in Nigeria, the Qura’nic teachers were the most respected and literate people among the society, and earned reasonable financial remunerations from the traditional rulers and the general populace. But after the forceful conquering of the traditional kingdoms by the British colonialist, the Qura’nic knowledge and the teachers were relegated, and all financial benefits to the Qura’nic schools were cut off, which left them with no option, then to find their fate on the streets. The aim of this paper is to explore the difficult condition of the free services the Tsangaya teachers are rendering to the society. A qualitative method was used to conduct the research, where three schools were purposively selected, one from each of the three senatorial districts of Kano state. The population includes 11 participants which are; 3 Almajiri teachers, three Almajiri parents, three people living with Almajiris, and two government officials. Primary information was sourced through face-face interview strategy, and the result was analysed through the Nvivo10 software application. Findings discovered that the teachers do not get any salary from the government, and the parents usually send their children to the school, to live from elementary level until graduation without paying school fees, rather, the teachers survive through the daily house-house and street begging of money and food by their pupils.

Full text
Abstract:
Middle ear effusion (MEE) is the commonest ear problem affecting children less than 6 years and is a threat to deafness which is common in our environment. Tympanometry is used to determine MEE and other problems of the middle ear. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of middle ear effusion and other middle ear problems among apparently healthy school children in some selected schools in Kano Metropolis. The study was in four primary schools located in Kano metropolis where socio-demographic characteristics of the participants (whose parents consented) were recorded, and pneumatic tympanometry was conducted. The participants were 150 school children (78 males and 72 females) aged 4-12 years and were selected using stratified sampling technique, with mean age of 9.8 ± 2.2 years. Results showed that Cronbach’s alpha was > 85% for both intra and inter-observer error estimate. In all the measured parameters, significant sexual dimorphism was only found in the right ear cavity volume (Rt ECV) with males having higher values (p<0.05). Majority of the pupils (82%) had normal (type A) tympanogram, 6% had flat (type B) which signifies middle ear effusion, 5.4% had type C tympanogram which signifies negative middle ear pressure and clinically eustachian tube dysfunction, 5.6% had type As (osteosclerosis of the middle ear), and 1% has Ad type (ossicular discontinuity). Age, height & weight correlated significantly with one or more of the measured ear parameters of the left or right in both sexes. The prevalence of MEE among school-aged children in Kano metropolis is alarming and is a threat to deafness. Therefore, clinicians should be more suspicious and include routine ear examination for children in their practice to detect uncomplicated MEE.

Abstract:
Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that has become endemic in the riverine communities, primarily among school-age children, leading to school absenteeism. The study determines the prevalence of urinary Schistosomiasis and predisposition factors. A total of One hundred and fifty urine samples were examined for the presence of Schistosoma haematobium ova and detection of haematuria. The result obtained was tested using the Chi-Square test, and the overall prevalence was 53.3%. The infection rate was higher among males (58%) than the females (42%). The infection rate was higher among the ≥15 years age group (69.2%), while the 5-9 years age group had the least infection rate (47.2%). The study observed that the highest prevalence (62.0%) was recorded in Kafinchiri Primary School; this might be due to the influence of the water body in the community. The predisposition factors include gender, as males recorded the higher prevalence, which might be related to the economic activities such as irrigation, fishing, and laundry occurring in the riverine area. Age groups among the pupils had an impact on the prevalence of school absenteeism, and running away before closing hours is partially attributed to recreational activities, including swimming. Maintaining a safe distance between schools and water bodies and limiting frequent visits to the riverine area is crucial. The use of personal protective clothing and prompt treatment of infected persons should be encouraged to curtail the infection.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the effect of socio-cultural practices on the English Senior School Certificate of Education (SSCE) results in public and private secondary school students in Kano, Nigeria. Using a case study approach, we explore whether socio-cultural practices might have influenced or constrained student performance in English SSCE results. This case study involves ten (10) participants from ten (10) secondary schools. An open-ended questionnaire was administered to all participants; findings revealed that teaching-related facilities in public secondary schools are not sufficiently available, unlike private schools. Furthermore, findings also indicate that the teacher-student ratio in public secondary schools is higher than in private schools. Students’ attitudes towards learning English language, including the use of social media, has also influenced the English SSCE results. Likewise, the schools’ socio-cultural practices affect the students’ performance in English SSCE exams. It is strongly recommended that the recruitment of additional English language teachers in public schools, and the establishment of more public schools aimed at improving the teacher-student ratio be employed. This would likely provide more active and interactive sessions for students, as well teachers. There is also a need to provide sufficient teaching and learning facilities and equipment in public schools, such as chairs, tables, fans, air-conditioning units, textbooks, computers, projectors, and so on. Public-school stakeholders should encourage the use of English language in English classes.

Abstract:
Different types of knitting yarn purchased from Katin Kwori market, Kano, Nigeria was studied for its suitability and end use performance. The target is the schools cardigan, where complaints of sub-standard were more and other users, especially the Nigeria security forces. Three different yarns were purchased from Katin Kwari, Kano, Nigeria. This includes:‘Yeye’ as sample A, ‘OML Baby Wool’ as sample B, and ‘MH Beby Wool’ as sample C. The samples were knitted with plain pattern and were subjected to four chemical tests of perspiration, light fastness, wash fastness and rubbing tests. The samples were also subjected to mechanical tests of tensile strength and elongation. The result shows that sample ‘A’ produces the best result in both mechanical and chemical tests carried out, while samples ‘B’ and ‘C’ results are fair. Though sample ‘A’ market price is a little bit higher than the other samples, it will produce a good cardigan either for school children, security personnel and other household use, which will stand the test of time.

Abstract:

Nigerians as a people are in dire need of value re-orientation in order to stem the tide of negative social values that are bedevilling the country. Education has crucial role to play in the efforts towards value regeneration and reorientation because the youth of the nation spend their formative years in the school system. This study investigated the level of secondary school teachers’ awareness of the National Policy on Education (NPE) with regard to the value components of the Policy. A descriptive survey design was employed to collect data for the study, using a sample of 301 secondary school teachers in Kano state, Nigeria. The data collection instrument was a self-developed and validated 16 items questionnaire. Data collected through the instruments were analysed using SPSS 20; descriptive statistics (Frequency, Percentage, Mean, and Standard Deviation) and inferential statistics (i.e., Independent sampled t-test and One-Way ANOVA) were used to analyse the data. Findings reveal that, the secondary schools teachers have no access to the NPE document and possess moderate level of awareness of the value component of NPE. Similarly, there is no significant difference in the teachers’ level of awareness with respect to gender, qualifications and teaching experiences. Based on the findings of this study it can be concluded that, the secondary school teachers have limited access to the NPE documents and irrespective of their gender, qualifications and years of teaching experience possess moderate level of awareness of the value component of NPEs in Kano state. It is therefore recommended among others that, relevant authorities should provide more copies of the latest edition of the NPE in school libraries; In-service training of teachers should include sensitization on the contents and relevance of the policy document to their work as teachers. Moreover, in-service training of teachers should include inculcation of skills of identifying the value components of school subjects and the retraining should be all-inclusive to accommodate teachers of all cadres.

Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the Female Low Enrolment in Science Subjects and its Menace in some Selected Secondary Schools in Fagge Zonal Education of Kano State. The survey was conducted among science-based Senior Secondary School two (SSS2) female students in five randomly selected senior secondary schools in the zone to ascertain the causes and improvements of low females’ students’ enrolment in science subjects. Twenty-five test item questionnaires based on six (6) factors of socio-cultural, parental, teachers, self, school environment and marital suspected to be capable of causing low enrolment in science subjects were formulated and used for the study. Two hundred and twenty (220) questionnaires were administered and one hundred and eighty (180) were returned. The data was analyzed with the aid of simple percentages as a statistical method. Results showed that of all the factors investigated, only parental, school environment and marital factors were implicated as the major factors for low female students’ enrolment in science subjects in the selected schools. The socio-economic status of parents, time allotment to household chores by married students, gender insensitivity, illustrations in science textbooks have also contributed to low enrolment of female students in science subjects. Contrary to expectations, socio-cultural, self and teacher factors were not major contributing factors to low female students’ enrolment in science subjects in schools in the zonal education office. In spite of the identified factors causing low enrolment of female students in science subjects in the study area, improvements in the enrolment can be achieved by payment of allowances to female science students to serve as motivation, enlightenment of both the parents and their female students on the importance of science to national development and provision of good science laboratories and facilities.

Abstract:
This study was carried out among pupils of three primary schools in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria between May and July, 2018. Three hundred and twenty (320) pupils were examined for the presence of schistosome eggs in urine. Out of the 320 pupils examined only 34 (10.6%) were found to be infected with S haematobium. Males have higher prevalence of 26 (12.1%) compared to females 8(7.6%). The age group 8-10 years has the highest infection rate 13 (15.85%) while the age group 5-7 the least with 1(4.6%). Although sample sizes were not equal, among the communities Fallau with 65 has the highest infection rate with a prevalence of 11(16.9%), Gano with 135 has 14 (10.4%) followed by Danbagina, 120 with a prevalence of 9(7.5%). All infections were light (<50eggs/10ml of urine). There was a significant difference in infection among the different villages examined χ2= 8.94, df = 2, p<0.05.Statistically there was also a significant difference in infection among the different age groups χ2= 2.9356, df = 3, p<0.05. It was concluded that S. haematobium is present in these study areas and unless health education on the mode of transmission of the disease, provision of safe and adequate water supply and sanitation which will help in curtailing the infection is provided, there is the likelihood of a rise in infection rate. This is the first time this type of study was carried out in these study areas.

Abstract:
Crime is an epidemic, and there is a need to spot crime doers. The research aimed to analyze systemic technical approaches to nipping crime in the bud. Police Primary School was employed. Recruitment was 100 pupils. They were five classes in all, and each classroom had 20 pupils. The pupils stayed in their classrooms. The research is in two phases: Phase 1 is voice recognition, and phase 2 is the truth serum approach. Phase 1 was to test the ability of students to recognize each other through a voice from spoken words between close associates. Each class was allocated twenty seconds for the ear witness voice recognition. The pupils in each class block utter sounds (speak), one after the other, and the other class block keenly listens to their voices for identification. In phase 2, pupils receive items as an enticement for the truth. This item is mind-altering, and the crime's identity is known. The research analyzed information obtained from the pupils after inducement to ascertain the doer of the crime. In phase 1, pupils in the same classrooms' voice recognition scored above 70%, while pupils in different classrooms scored above 60% in all the classrooms demonstrated. Only Classrooms B and D were non-significant from other classrooms (P>0.05) in the same classrooms, while non-significant differences in the different classroom settings were observed. Pase-2 revealed above 60% of the crime doers. Only two classrooms were not significant. The most frequent crime is noise making. The divulging of information on crime doers was comparable in all. A sample of 384 respondents was selected using the Krejcie and Morgan table. A Mathematics Attitude Questionnaire (MAQ) was completed by the respondents which measure the students affect, behavior and cognitive aspects, all the data collected were analyzed using the statistical package for social science (SPSS). The results show the respondents are experiencing a negative attitude in math’s subject and it is recommended that parents and teachers are required to provide some supportive measures for changing the student's attitude. If a negative attitude among students is not addressed, the career of students will be very limited and their math’s performance will be relatively poor as well

Abstract:
Background.Eclampsia is a reliable indicator of poor birth preparedness and complications readiness. We determined perceptions about eclampsia, birth preparedness, and complications readiness among antenatal clients in Kano, Nigeria.Materials and Method.A cross-sectional design was used to study 250 randomly selected antenatal clients. Data was analyzed using SPSS 16.0.Result.The mean age of the respondents was 26.1 ± 6.4 years. The majority perceived that eclampsia is preventable through good ANC (76.4%) and hospital delivery (70.8%). Overall, 66.8% had good perception about eclampsia. Having at least secondary school education and multigravidity were associated with good perception about eclampsia on multivariate analysis. About a third (39.6%) of the mothers was less prepared. On binary logistic regression, good perception about eclampsia and multigravidity were associated with being very prepared for birth. Up to 37.6% were not ready for complications. Half (50.4%) knew at least three danger signs of pregnancy, and 30.0% donated blood or identified suitable blood donor. On multivariate analysis, having at least secondary school education, being very prepared for birth, and multigravidity emerged as the only predictors of the respondents’ readiness for complications. Conclusion and Recommendations.Health workers should emphasize the practicability of birth preparedness and complications readiness during ANC and in the communities, routinely review plans, and support clients meet-up challenging areas. The importance of girl-child education to at least secondary school should be buttressed.
