Abstract:
A statewide community-based participatory evaluation and a National Child Welfare Workforce Institute (NCWWI) organizational health assessment provided context for selection of new philosophy and practice models by the Missouri Children's Division. Amid the hope and inspiration generated by these changes, program installation steps unfolded nearly simultaneously with initial implementation in the Kansas City area transformation zone. Policy-to-practice and practice-to-policy feedback loops in the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Social Work's NCWWI university partnership grant identified implementation challenges and supported development of tools for improved implementation.

Abstract:
In its combined Baccalaureate-M.D. degree program, the University of Missouri—Kansas City School of Medicine endeavors to foster interdisciplinary integration by intertwining the humanities, clinical medicine, and basic sciences throughout the curriculum. Analysis over 6 years (1986–1991) of 547 students' scores on comprehensive examinations and ratings of 464 to 478 graduates' clinical abilities suggest that the integrative elements of the curriculum have a counterpart in performance. Such experience would recommend possible steps to encourage interdisciplinary integration at other schools: allow students to acquire disciplinary understandings but offer early clinical exposure for context and relevance, arrange productive repetition of material, pair more with less advanced students for integrated learning, and choose faculty who model integration and expect students to do so.

Joshua Dunn presents a carefully researched study of Missouri v. Jenkins, a Kansas City case that led to the nation's “most expansive and expensive” school desegregation effort (p. 4). Dunn draws important lessons from the case regarding the limitations of judicial policymaking and the inability, and often unwillingness, of our nation to respond to demands by urban communities of color that equal and excellent schools be made available to all children.

Abstract:
The Growing Growers Training Program facilitates on-farm apprenticeships complemented by workshops on critical skills to train new growers and improve the skills of existing growers to meet large demand for local and organically grown produce in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The program is a collaborative effort of Kansas State University, University of Missouri Extension, the Kansas City Food Circle, and the Kansas Rural Center, and was established in response to requests by area organic growers for a training program to increase numbers of local organic producers. In Fall 2003, we developed the components of the program, including a curriculum designed to help apprentices gain a set of core competencies through practical and theoretical training activities, including one-on-one training by host farmers, readings, workshops and farm tours. During the 2004 growing season 11 apprentices worked part time or volunteered on eight host farms, and participated in a series of 11 workshops and farm tours. Based on self-assessment, apprentices felt they gained considerable skill in most of the core competencies. Both apprentices and host farmers expressed high satisfaction with the program. At the start of the 2005 season, demand for the program increased, with 25 apprentices with diverse backgrounds placed on 12 host farms. Workshop participation was not restricted to apprentices, and over 200 trainees paid to attend workshops during 2004, helping to generate funds to cover program costs. It is still early to judge program success, but eight of 11 of the 2004 apprentices were engaged in full- or parttime market gardening in 2005.

Abstract:
This article reviews two community integration projects at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Institute for Human Development which illustrate model development across the life-span. The preschool project is aimed at successfully mainstreaming preschoolers who are handicapped with their nonhandicapped peers through the use of trained volunteers. The elderly project is directed at increasing community integration of elderly persons with developmental disabilities by using nonhandicapped elderly volunteer companions. A description of each project, including project goals, methods, and preliminary results is provided to develop a frame of reference for a comparative discussion of the strengths, weaknesses, and outcomes in these community-based demonstration projects. Three common variables are discussed: use of trained volunteers, changes in attitudes and knowledge by nonhandicapped volunteers, and measured outcomes for clients. The costs and benefits of model development are summarized.

Abstract:
Abstract A chief concern regarding distance education for the health professions is quality of the experience. Distance education has the potential for expanding student access, providing individualized instruction, and promoting active learning among geographically separated members of learning groups. Students and professors who have participated in distance learning platforms have expressed concerns about technical problems, inability to interact in real time with each other, and other frustrations related to this type of delivery. The Dental Hygiene program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has addressed these issues and enhanced an already successful program by putting the professor, a technologist, and the student in the same space, at the same time, in real time. This enhancement has substantiated the ability of distance education to provide instruction among geographically separated members of learning groups, making it a plausible solution to the shortage of educators in healthcare professions. Abstract:
This article discusses a pilot investigation conducted between February and May 2002. The aim of this investigation was to assess the efficacy of the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program — which has a proven track record elsewhere — at an historically black university in South Africa. SI is an academic assistance program which was developed at the University of Missouri- Kansas City in 1973 by Deanna C. Martin and subsequently adopted countrywide and in other parts of the world. The pilot was conducted on a population of first year law students registered for an introductory module, “Introduction to South African Legal Method and Theory”. Two questions were investigated: 1. Does SI have an effect on students’ mastery of content? 2. Does SI have an effect on students’ perceptions of their mastery of skills? Three measures were used to explore these questions, namely pre and posttests of content mastery; student perception of skill mastery and end of course grades. Although there was no significant difference on the mastery of course content between SI and Non-SI participants, it was found that higher SI attendance rates resulted in slightly higher mean grades, suggesting that SI may have had some impact on the final course end grades. A significant difference at the .03 level was found between the mean grades of students who attended 4 or more sessions and those who attended 1–3 sessions. The investigation also revealed that a number of barriers and challenges need to be addressed for a successful SI program to be implemented at the university.

Abstract:
Longitudinal data are necessary to identify changes in drug abuse and resultant toxicity. The development of COC-LOG, a longitudinal database used to assess cocaine-associated emergency department patient visits at Truman Medical Center, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, is described. COC-LOG currently contains 1,054 patient visits. The data demonstrate that cocaine toxicity has remained relatively constant in our emergency department (ED) over the last 4 years. The majority of cocaine use is through smoking crack, and major differences in toxicity are not seen between this route and IV cocaine use. The relatively low prevalence of severe cardiac toxicity and deaths has lead to a series of projects to evaluate cocaine toxicity's clinical course. Electrocardiographic abnormalities are common, but do not frequently indicate severe clinical toxicity. In the first 3 years after ED discharge, deaths in cocaine patients occur almost twice as frequently as in age-, race-, and sex-matched control ED patients. Urine drug testing of pregnant patients suggests that documentation of recent cocaine use by history alone underestimates the prevalence of cocaine use in ED patients approximately four-fold. COC-LOG is a useful method of following cocaine's impact on department patients. Study results can be applied to patient care and the education of ED faculty, residents, students, and personnel.

Abstract:
THE QUESTION POSED TO PARTICIPANTS AT THE International Academy of Nurse Editors (INANE) was “Why don’t nurses write for publication?” The answer that surfaced throughout the discussions was because nurses never learned why and how to write professional manuscripts.1 It is our belief that authorship should be part of the curriculum of every advanced practice nursing (APN) program. Four articles published in this issue of Neonatal Network® were written by University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) students as part of their required course work. Neonatal Network® has chosen to highlight these student writers in an effort to encourage all neonatal nurses to consider this opportunity and to encourage faculty to incorporate this activity into their curricula for APNs. Sharing one’s knowledge and expertise is an essential element of advanced nursing practice and provides the opportunity to enhance the science of nursing practice. By writing for publication, students work toward achieving the following recently published Acute Care NP Competencies:2• Integrates research to promote evidence-based practice for patients with acute, critical, and chronic illness.• Participates in formal and informal education provided to other health care professionals to promote positive outcomes during complex acute, critical, and chronic illness.• Contributes to the knowledge base of the health care community through research, presentations, publications, and involvement in professional organizations.• Promotes valuing lifelong learning and evidence-based practice while continually acquiring knowledge and skills needed to address questions arising in practice to improve patient care.

Abstract:
ObjectiveThere have been increased efforts to implement medical ethics curricula at the student and resident levels; however, practising physicians are often left unconsidered. Therefore, we sought to pilot an ethics and professionalism curriculum for faculty in obstetrics and gynaecology to remedy gaps in the formal, informal and hidden curriculum in medical education.MethodsAn ethics curriculum was developed for faculty within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at a tertiary care, academic hospital. During the one-time, 4-hour, mandatory in-person session, the participants voluntarily completed the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, Handoff Clinical Evaluation Exercise, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine and overall course evaluation. Patient satisfaction survey scores in both the hospital and ambulatory settings were compared before and after the curriculum.ResultsTwenty-eight faculty members attended the curriculum. Overall, respondents reported less burnout and performed at the same level or better in terms of patient handoff than the original studies validating the instruments. Faculty rated the professionalism behaviours as well as teaching of professionalism much lower at our institution than the validation study. There was no change in patient satisfaction after the curriculum. However, overall, the course was well received as meeting its objectives, being beneficial and providing new tools to assess professionalism.ConclusionThis pilot study suggests that an ethics curriculum can be developed for practising physicians that is mindful of pragmatic concerns while still meeting its objectives. Further study is needed regarding long term and objective improvements in ethics knowledge, impact on the education of trainees and improvement in the care of patients as a result of a formal curriculum for faculty.

Abstract:
One of the joys of archival research is uncovering the occasional gem of information. That letter, or maybe just a few lines within a note, that confirms the validity of your project and lets you utter a brief exclamation (in hushed tones of course) of victory before carrying on. The Nazarene Archives in Kansas City, Missouri elicited such a reaction from me: the thrill of discovery writ large. Here I found an extraordinary amount of information well preserved and organized, with an exceptional staff eager to assist, which has lain largely untapped by African historians. While at first blush it may seem unlikely that this material could hold interest for any outside of those researching into some aspect of Nazarene history, the material cuts across enough geographical/cultural/political trends in African history to make it potentially useful to many more researches then have accessed it to date.

Abstract:
Orthodontics is an important part of the 4 year BDS program. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics are defined as the area of dentistry that includes the diagnosis, prevention, interception, guidance, and correction of mal-relationships of the developing or mature orofacial structures. (“2012 AAO Glossary_0,” n.d.) This branch of dentistry deals with irregularities of teeth and improper jaw relationships. Malocclusion is known as the improper positioning of teeth when the jaws are closed. The goals of orthodontic therapy are to improve the smile and facial appearance (resulting in improvement in an individual’s social well-being and quality of life), obtain optimal occlusion, and establish normal oral function (Ackerman 2012). Due to a growing esthetic awareness among the general population orthodontics is gaining popularity as a profession. Hence dentists need to be trained well in this field to cater to the growing needs of the general population. There are 2 types of training offered in the field of orthodontics, Postgraduate training, and undergraduate training. A graduate must be competent enough to diagnose and treat minor orthodontic cases as well as know when is the right time for referral to a specialist. If a general dental practitioner is well trained in the field of orthodontics, specialists only have to deal with complex ones which decreases the workload of the specialist. The level of the graduate thus should be such that they must be able to deal with minor orthodontic cases as a general dental practitioner. There was a study conducted at the University of Missouri Kansas city about how well fresh graduates are prepared to deal with orthodontic cases. (“No Title,” 2016). There has been no such study done in Pakistan. However, there have been studies conducted on how confident graduates felt about practicing unsupervised. The researches revealed that orthodontics was the field where the students felt least confident. (“Preparedness for practice,” 2011). No such research has been done in Pakistan. The purpose of this research is to find out if the fresh dental graduates of Pakistan are competent enough to deal with orthodontic cases without supervision. The level of training of the undergraduates is accessed to check if it is according to the international standards and if Pakistani graduates meet the international competency need in the subject of orthodontics. This research would help identify the voids in the training of graduates which would create a basis for further research on this topic and the revision of the dental curriculum.

Abstract:
This past semester I conducted my dissertation research at Penn Valley Community College (PVCC) in Kansas City, Missouri. PVCC is located in the urban core of Kansas City, Missouri, and its academic English program serves primarily refugees and immigrants, as opposed to the international students that we work with at the Applied English Center. I chose to work with the students at PVCC because my roots as an ESL teacher are within the refugee and immigrant communities, and I enjoy maintaining my connection with these very interesting students.
