The Health belief model användes som teoretiskt ramverk.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The inclusion of nutrition in the national syllabus for health and skincare therapists indicates the realisation of its importance within this industry. Health and skincare therapists should be able to observe any adverse skin condition as a result of a dysfunctional homeostatic relationship between the skin and internal body systems. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional knowledge, attitude and practices of health and skincare therapists working in accredited clinics in South Africa. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Two hundred and forty-five questionnaires were sent to 54 SAAHSP accredited clinics around South Africa. Data analysis was performed using the 73 completed questionnaires, representing a response rate of 29.8%. A further 22 therapists participated in focus group discussions and 7 experts in the field of nutrition and skincare acted as the expert panel and participated in in-depth interviews. A self-administered questionnaire on knowledge, attitude and practices was developed, based on the national syllabus. The 56-item questionnaire consisted of 10 demographic questions, 30 nutrition knowledge questions (selected by the expert panel from a pool of 96 questions), 10 attitude statements and 6 practice questions. The questionnaires were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The mean total knowledge score of the respondents was 64.4% (SD 0.11) indicating a level of knowledge above the required pass percentage of 60% for a SAAHSP qualification. Therapists with a CIDESCO qualification had a statistically significant higher total knowledge score. The mean score for the therapists’ nutritional knowledge related to skincare was 47.5%, but their attitudes and their ability to advise clients about nutrition were mostly positive, with at least 61% and 69% of the therapists respectively agreeing with the statements. Fifty-six therapists (77%) felt that more intense theoretical nutrition training was needed and 83.3% agreed that more intense practical application of nutritional knowledge is needed at health and skincare institutes. Consistent with the majority’s opinion (82%) that nutritional counseling should form part of treatment, 59% and 63% offer nutritional counseling during body and facial treatment respectively. Therapists gain their nutritional knowledge predominantly from newspapers and magazines. The themes highlighted during the focus group discussions included the influence of training institutions on nutritional knowledge, the importance of client consultation, but the lack of time to perform these and the need for educational opportunities in the professional industry. During the in-depth interviews, the experts highlighted the purpose of nutrition in the industry, nutritional responsibility, training and counseling of therapists as well as the SAAHSP syllabus. Therapists’ understanding of the scientific functioning of nutrients and their nutritional knowledge regarding skincare is a cause for concern. Their lack of confidence in providing clients with nutritional advice, especially regarding skincare; despite their perception that they have sufficient knowledge in this regard, reveals their inability to apply nutritional knowledge in practice. Recommendations to governing bodies and educators responsible for the development and implementation of the national syllabus are made.
Kamaldien, Yusuf. "A study on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) on HIV/AIDS amongst the employees of Telkom SA Ltd." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/3419.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the level of HIV/AIDS Knowledge, attitudes towards HIV/AIDS as well as practices amongst the employees of Telkom SA Ltd. Furthermore it also aims to determine the effectiveness of the Peer Education programme within the company as well as the role that promoters are playing in encouraging Peer Educators to do awareness in the workplace on the one hand and encouraging their subordinates to attend such programmes on the other hand. A total of 80 employees were invited to participate in the survey. At the end of the survey period, which ran from 2 to 21 February 2009, it was found that a total of 66 employees responded by completing the on-line survey. This represents a return of 82,5%. While the survey results shows a remarkably high level of HIV/AIDS knowledge amongst the responds, it could not be conclusively proven that it was as a result of attending HIV/AIDS workplace awareness programmes. However, it can be said that this knowledge was sufficient to: Enable employees to make informed decisions about their own sexual behaviour Peer Educators were confident that their knowledge levels were sufficient to educate their peers. The results also show quite a high level of disinvolvement on the part of promoters with regard to HIV/AIDS workplace issues. Finally this study also contains a range of recommendations and suggestions which were derived from the findings.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Introduction: The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of peer educators and university students, on whether the Peer Education-HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme has made an impact on the behavioural change of the recipients of the module as compared to the non-recipients. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using stratified sampling design among peer educators and students to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of peer educators and students. Participants were selected from Tshwane University of Technology campuses in Pretoria, Soshanguve and Ga-rankuwa. The study was conducted among 300 participants; 150 peer educators and 150 students. Informed consent was provided with each structured questionnaire. Findings and Discussion: Three quarters of the respondents in this study were females. This is consistent with many other studies of HIV/AIDS among students. The response rate in this study was 68% and was higher than the 45% of the Namibian Polytechnic students who participated in the KAP surveys of HIV/AIDS (De Beer et al., 2012). Mean knowledge levels of HIV/AIDS in this study were slightly higher among peer educators (92%) than among students (90%). Peer educators had more positive attitudes towards HIV/AIDS than students in knowing someone who is HIV+ (78% vs. 67%) and sharing a desk with a PLHIV (97% vs. 95%). On whether HIV+ children should mix with others, attitude levels were the same (92% vs. 92%). Better practices were observed on peer educators vs. students - more peer educators (87%) than students (75%) said they always used a condom when they have sex. Conclusion and Recommendations: Knowledge, attitudes and practices of HIV/AIDS are high among peer educators and students at Tshwane University of Technology and it is recommended that the Peer Education-HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme at TUT should continue giving attention to changing attitudes and practices among peer educators and other learners.
Baloyi, Risimati Solidify. "The knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of correctional officers relating to HIV and AIDS in Johannesburg Management Area: Gauteng Region: Republic of South Africa." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/86524.
Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The South African prevalence is estimated at just over 17.1%, but efforts to reduce the number of HIV and AIDS deaths have dramatically changed. What is disturbing is that HIV prevalence rate in South African correctional facilities is higher than in general population. At 44%, HIV prevalence rate in South African correctional facilities are more than double of the just over 17.1% HIV prevalence rate in general population at the end of 2012 (UNAIDS, 2013). South African department of correctional services should regard these as a serious challenge given the increased number of sexual assaults and rape in correctional facilities as the Minister of correctional services Sbu Ndebele recently stated in Prison Brief. These could be worsening if the DCS does not come up with proactive strategies to reduce this prevalence in our Correctional facilities. These come back to the very same correctional officers who are not even aware of this state of HIV prevalence in their correctional facilities. This is because the findings of this study illustrate that majority of the correctional officers stationed in Johannesburg management area have limited knowledge about HIV and AIDS general information and they do not trust their management and their employee assistant staff when it comes to HIV and AIDS and this deny them necessary support and care from their employer. As the global HIV and AIDS epidemic enters its fourth decade, we are confronted by new challenges. In recent years, research related to HIV and AIDS has abounded as scholars continue to seek insight into the reciprocal influence of the pandemic on the one hand and various social systems on the other (Ebersohn, 2008). The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge, attitudes and sexual practices of correctional officers relating to HIV in Johannesburg management area, Gauteng Region: South Africa. In this study the emerging findings are that Johannesburg management area are implementing their workplace HIV and AIDS programmes without a KAP study conducted to establish the baseline information about their employees, let alone conducting the KAP study on the regular basis to establish the effect of their workplace HIV and AIDS programmes. This was evident when majority of the respondents in this study had a limited knowledge about HIV in general and HIV prevalence in their country and their correctional facilities. Furthermore, there were also a poor monitoring and evaluation of such programmes. Another disturbing finding was that correctional officers in this management area did not have trust on their employee assistant staff and this was evident when 56% of the respondents responded that they would not use their internal EAP in HIV/AIDS related matters. This was the same when it comes to correctional officers attitudes towards management of this management area. This is evident when 71% of the respondents responded that if tested positive for HIV, they would not inform their immediate supervisors, managers, EAP and let alone their chaplain. This implies that there is a lack of trust between the management and their employees and between the employees and the employee assistant programme staff. However, correctional officers attitudes towards offenders living with HIV and AIDS is very good and encouraging and if correctional officers of this management area are given enough HIV information, they may pass it easily to all offenders as they interact with them on a daily basis. Given correctional officers‟ response on HIV testing and the use of EAP it is recommended that external service providers unknown to correctional officers should be used instead if management is unable to conduct a successful capacity building within the management area. Majority of the correctional officers according to this study had a limited knowledge about HIV treatment, cure and vaccine as they are unable to differentiate between the three and this is should be a serious concern for the department of correctional services. Although correctional officers sexual practices in this study findings indicated that correctional officers are well equipped when it comes to safe sexual practices, workplace HIV and AIDS programmes should include cultural beliefs, religion, tradition and myths to fight the spread of this epidemic.
