Abstract:
Soil rich in organic matter is apt for the growth of plants as it provides them with nutrients essential for their growth and nourishment. Apart from that, it also affects the soil structure and mineralogy and ultimately the soil properties. Based on same purpose, this study was carried out to investigate the effect of organic matter (Vermi-compost) on the compaction characteristics of Karewa soils. In thus study, three soil samples were taken from three sites and characterised as "CL" (clayey soil with low plasticity). Proctor tests of different compaction energies (viz., Standard Proctor, Modified Proctor and Reduced Standard Proctor) were conducted on the samples with and without Vermi-compost. The percentages of Vermi-compost by dry weight of soil was taken as 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% and mixed with soil thoroughly before each Proctor test. The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of the Karewa soil corresponding to each Vermi-compost percentage was determined in Geo-Technical Laboratory of NIT Srinagar. Proctor results indicate that on introduction of Vermi-compost to the Karewa soils, maximum dry density decreases and Optimum moisture content increases with the increase in Vermi-compost percentage upto 12% and beyond that the mixture became unworkable. An empirical model relating maximum dry density and optimum moisture content with organic matter content was also established on the basis of the acquired Proctor test results.

Abstract:
The Upper Karewas are devoid of biomass potential and hence no palynostratigraphy could be established. In contrast, Lower Karewas are both quantitatively and qualitatively rich in biota. The major areas of study include Dubjan, Hirpur, Krachipathra, Ningle Nullah, Laredura, Liddarmarg, Butapathri, Wapjan, etc. Dubjan, supposedly the basal part of the Karewa sequence, overlies unconformably the Panjal volcanics and Hirpur overlies the Dubjan. Recent palaeomagnetic studies suggest that these sediments span late Gilbert to middle Matuyama magnetic polarity ranging in age between 3.5 to 2.0 Ma. Wapjan is the uppermost pan of the Lower Karewa and falls between late Matuyama to early Bruhnes ranging in age between 0.75 to 0.70 Ma.
Palynological and palaeobotanical investigations carried over a large number of exposures have revealed that there is no unanimity in vegetation all through the Karewa deposits, instead, a variety of vegetation types has been recorded in time and space indicating their development under different circumstances. The vegetation met here varies from typical subtropical to desertic alpine type. The climate has not been static for a long period rather reciprocity in the climate has been recorded which has been deciphered from vegetal signatures left by the nature. Post-glacial sediments from the lake basin in the valley have also been investigated, which reveal three-fold vegetational development reflecting on three-fold climatic evolution.

Abstract:
This paper embodies the results of diatom analysis of 54 samples covering all the lithofacies in Hirpur Locality III, Kashmir Valley. Out of 54 samples, only 16 samples have yielded diatoms whereas the rest of the samples proved barren. Diatom analysis has enabled to present two-fold comments: (i) the sediments are poor in diatoms and most of the frustules are ground, and (ii) these sediments are rich in Pennales. Furthermore, the frequency and nature of diatoms in the samples have revealed that the depositional environments were not wholly ponding rather there might have been violent floodings of the lake which perhaps hampered the growth of diatoms and their preservation too.

Abstract:
The present palynostratigraphical studies carried out on the exposed sediments of Hirpur Locality-I, lying under the earlier worked out Hirpur Locality-III, has revealed continued dominance of arboreal elements in the sequence depicting comparative preponderance of spruce and oak, although showing abrupt change in their values. The palynodata thus obtained has been interpreted to reconstruct the palaeovegetation pattern and to deduce the possible climatic fluctuation witnessed during the course of sedimentation of the 40 m thick lithocolumn. The pollen diagram has been divided into four pollen assemblage zones.

Abstract:
Abstract. Ostracoda from a 25 m thick exposure in sediments of the upper Karewa formation indicate lacustrine conditions in the Kashmir intermontane basin during the Middle to Late Pleistocene. The Middle to Late Pleistocene age is established on the basis of lithostratigraphy and confirmed by two thermoluminescence age determinations at the top of the section. The ostracod assemblages show that the lake water remained fresh or, at most, was very slightly saline, throughout the period represented by the section. Nearly all ostracod taxa identified from the sediments are cold stenothermal forms and they include inhabitants of the littoral and profundal domain as well as running waters and springs. The Ostracoda present within the section indicate that during deposition of the upper Karewa sediments a large, but fairly shallow, well-oxygenated open-basin freshwater lake existed in that central part of the Kashmir Basin. Although the sequences suggest changes in water depth may have occurred, lacustrine conditions were otherwise largely unchanged over the period represented by the section, up until the demise of the lake during the early part of the Late Pleistocene.

Abstract:
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Gulf of Mexico are primarily caused by dense aggregations of the dinoflagellate species, Karenia brevis. Karenia brevis produces a highly toxic neurotoxin, brevetoxin which has been shown to cause Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP) and respiratory distress in humans in addition to a wide range of negative impacts upon natural ecosystems. Karenia mikimotoi is a co-existing species present during K. brevis blooms. K. mikimotoi has caused major HAB events in other parts of the ocean, but has not been recognized as a major contributor to toxicity of blooms in the Gulf of Mexico. K. brevis and K. mikimotoi have both been associated with the presence of unidentified hemolytic toxins. Production of hemolysins has not previously been investigated for either species to date in the Gulf of Mexico. Presence of hemolysins may affect toxicity and the overall impact of HABs. Therefore, detection of hemolysins is imperative for accurate identification of potential harmful impacts of such blooms. The primary goal of this research is to define whether either species is capable of producing hemolytic activity independent of brevetoxin activity; and to identify if there is significant differentiation between a variety of clonal isolates regarding toxicity and growth rate when subjected to variable experimental conditions.

Abstract:
Netobulas valstybės tarnautojų veiklos vertinimo principas, kuris yra tiesiogiai susijęs su paaukštinimu pareigose ir sisteminio mokymosi bei kvalifikacinio tobulinimosi galimybių neužtikrinimas, komplikuoja valstybės tarnautojų karjeros galimybes.<br>Changes of late years raise growing claims to the public administration institutions in Lithuania. Public administration has to manage fast and effectively react to the society needs. It has to change and apply its structures, procedures and activity objectives according to volatile circumstances. Together with it requirements for civil servants change: they have to be creative, qualified and motivated, also they have to manage to protect and satisfy interests of all people. The aim of this Master Paper is to analyze what conditions are established for the civil servants under which they could adjust to the new requirements and at the same time to climb up the ladder in the civil service.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Presently slope stability analysis and landslide hazard monitoring are the most challenging tasks in mountainous regions like the Himalayas. These events which were earlier considered as a process of attaining equilibrium in the topographic surface of the earth by nature, with the increase in population and onset of industrial revolution in the past few decades, changed the scenario of this natural phenomenon and transformed it into a disaster. The main reason for this is the utilization of inaccessible terrains for engineering mega projects and urbanization. Today, landslides are considered as the worst natural disasters and have become the objects of mass destruction and thereby new approaches for landslide study are being constantly developed with time to understand this natural phenomenon as much as possible. Witnessing the severity of this disaster in India and globally; this study is aimed to study landslide hazard in the domain of landslide susceptibility mapping and hazard zonation. This approach makes use of different instability causing parameters prevalent in the area to demarcate the region into different probable hazard zones. The resulting maps thus prepared are called Landslide Hazard Zonation (LHZ). For the study, a sub-part of Karewa Basin is selected as an area of study in Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Two different methods, the established Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) method and the new machine learning based classification method using decision tree classification algorithm, are selected for the study of landslide hazard in the area. The resulting maps from both methods are analyzed and validated using the landslide inventory data. The results from both the methods are also used to perform a comparative analysis to examine which method yields better results. It is concluded that machine learning based methods, provided accurate training dataset can yield better results than the traditional methods which require a makeover to incorporate more data, made available with the advancement of technology.

Abstract:
Karen (or Kariang or Yang) are a group of heterogeneous ethnic groups that do not share common culture, language, religion, or material characteristics, and who live mostly in the hills bordering the mountainous region between Myanmar and neighboring countries (Fratticcioli 2001; Harriden 2002). Some of these groups have migrated to Thailand’s borders. Given these huge numbers of migrant Karens, there is a paucity of research and understanding of how Karen learners from upland ethnic groups negotiate and construct their identities when they socialize with other lowland learners. This paper explores ways in which Karen learners negotiate and construct their identities through language socialization in the Thai learning context. The study draws on insights from discourse theory and ecological constructionism in order to understand the identity and negotiation process of Karen learners at different levels of identity construction. Multiple semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain deeper understandings of this phenomenon between ethnicity and language socialization. The participants were four Karen learners who were studying in a Thai public university. Findings suggest that Karen learners experience challenges in forming their identity and in negotiating their linguistic capital in learning contexts. The factors influencing these perceptions seemed to emanate from the stakeholders and the international community, which played significant roles in the context of learning. The findings also reflect that Karen learner identity formation and negotiation in language socialization constitutes a dynamic and complex process involving many factors and incidences, discussed in the present study. The analysis presented has implications for immigration, mobility, language, and cultural policy, as well as for future research.
