Abstract:
Soil rich in organic matter is apt for the growth of plants as it provides them with nutrients essential for their growth and nourishment. Apart from that, it also affects the soil structure and mineralogy and ultimately the soil properties. Based on same purpose, this study was carried out to investigate the effect of organic matter (Vermi-compost) on the compaction characteristics of Karewa soils. In thus study, three soil samples were taken from three sites and characterised as "CL" (clayey soil with low plasticity). Proctor tests of different compaction energies (viz., Standard Proctor, Modified Proctor and Reduced Standard Proctor) were conducted on the samples with and without Vermi-compost. The percentages of Vermi-compost by dry weight of soil was taken as 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% and mixed with soil thoroughly before each Proctor test. The maximum dry density and optimum moisture content of the Karewa soil corresponding to each Vermi-compost percentage was determined in Geo-Technical Laboratory of NIT Srinagar. Proctor results indicate that on introduction of Vermi-compost to the Karewa soils, maximum dry density decreases and Optimum moisture content increases with the increase in Vermi-compost percentage upto 12% and beyond that the mixture became unworkable. An empirical model relating maximum dry density and optimum moisture content with organic matter content was also established on the basis of the acquired Proctor test results.

Abstract:
The Upper Karewas are devoid of biomass potential and hence no palynostratigraphy could be established. In contrast, Lower Karewas are both quantitatively and qualitatively rich in biota. The major areas of study include Dubjan, Hirpur, Krachipathra, Ningle Nullah, Laredura, Liddarmarg, Butapathri, Wapjan, etc. Dubjan, supposedly the basal part of the Karewa sequence, overlies unconformably the Panjal volcanics and Hirpur overlies the Dubjan. Recent palaeomagnetic studies suggest that these sediments span late Gilbert to middle Matuyama magnetic polarity ranging in age between 3.5 to 2.0 Ma. Wapjan is the uppermost pan of the Lower Karewa and falls between late Matuyama to early Bruhnes ranging in age between 0.75 to 0.70 Ma.
Palynological and palaeobotanical investigations carried over a large number of exposures have revealed that there is no unanimity in vegetation all through the Karewa deposits, instead, a variety of vegetation types has been recorded in time and space indicating their development under different circumstances. The vegetation met here varies from typical subtropical to desertic alpine type. The climate has not been static for a long period rather reciprocity in the climate has been recorded which has been deciphered from vegetal signatures left by the nature. Post-glacial sediments from the lake basin in the valley have also been investigated, which reveal three-fold vegetational development reflecting on three-fold climatic evolution.

Abstract:
This paper embodies the results of diatom analysis of 54 samples covering all the lithofacies in Hirpur Locality III, Kashmir Valley. Out of 54 samples, only 16 samples have yielded diatoms whereas the rest of the samples proved barren. Diatom analysis has enabled to present two-fold comments: (i) the sediments are poor in diatoms and most of the frustules are ground, and (ii) these sediments are rich in Pennales. Furthermore, the frequency and nature of diatoms in the samples have revealed that the depositional environments were not wholly ponding rather there might have been violent floodings of the lake which perhaps hampered the growth of diatoms and their preservation too.

Abstract:
The present palynostratigraphical studies carried out on the exposed sediments of Hirpur Locality-I, lying under the earlier worked out Hirpur Locality-III, has revealed continued dominance of arboreal elements in the sequence depicting comparative preponderance of spruce and oak, although showing abrupt change in their values. The palynodata thus obtained has been interpreted to reconstruct the palaeovegetation pattern and to deduce the possible climatic fluctuation witnessed during the course of sedimentation of the 40 m thick lithocolumn. The pollen diagram has been divided into four pollen assemblage zones.

Abstract:
Abstract. Ostracoda from a 25 m thick exposure in sediments of the upper Karewa formation indicate lacustrine conditions in the Kashmir intermontane basin during the Middle to Late Pleistocene. The Middle to Late Pleistocene age is established on the basis of lithostratigraphy and confirmed by two thermoluminescence age determinations at the top of the section. The ostracod assemblages show that the lake water remained fresh or, at most, was very slightly saline, throughout the period represented by the section. Nearly all ostracod taxa identified from the sediments are cold stenothermal forms and they include inhabitants of the littoral and profundal domain as well as running waters and springs. The Ostracoda present within the section indicate that during deposition of the upper Karewa sediments a large, but fairly shallow, well-oxygenated open-basin freshwater lake existed in that central part of the Kashmir Basin. Although the sequences suggest changes in water depth may have occurred, lacustrine conditions were otherwise largely unchanged over the period represented by the section, up until the demise of the lake during the early part of the Late Pleistocene.

Abstract:
Kashmir perhaps possess an authentic account of its History from the very earliest period. The Neolithic site of Burzahom throws a light on the different phases of the earliest history of Kashmir. The Burzahom site is a prehistoric settlement in the village of the same name in the Valley of Kashmir, a valley located between the Karakoram and the Pir Panjal Range. It is located between 34010' N and 73054 E. It is 16 kilometers 9.9 miles to the northeast of Srinagar on the Naseem Shalimar road. The elevation of the site is 1,800 meters 5,900 t above sea level. It is the northernmost excavated Neolithic site of India. The site is on an ancient Pleistocene lake bed1.The location is in a high terrace which is part of the floodplain of the Jhelum River and has Karewa soil clay formation. The site has a commanding view of the Dal Lake which is about 2 kilometers 1.2 miles away. In the Kashmiri language Burzahom means birch , a tree species that generally grows in the elevation range of 3,000 to 4,200 meters 9,800 to 13,800 ft. in the Himalayas , which is found in the excavated housing area in the form of roofing material, and thus confirming the existence of the tree even in the pre historic Neolithic times2. Abstract:
AbstractThe Kashmir Basin is filled with Pliocene-Pleistocene fluvio-lacustrine sediments. On the flank of the Pir Panjal these sediments, called “Lower Karewas”, are covered with loess deposits up to 25 m thick that contain numerous middle and late Pleistocene paleosols, mostly polygenetic pedocomplexes, which were classified by micromorphological studies. Thermoluminescence dates provide a chronostratigraphy of the late Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequences. On the Himalayan flank, the “Upper Karewas” are covered only with late Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequences. Their base is the last interglacial soil, developed ca. 110,000 ± 10,000 yr B.P. This soil is genetically comparable to the modern soil and, therefore, is thought to have developed under a deciduous forest in a “xeric” soil moisture regime. The loesses of last glacial age on both flanks of the basin contain three humus-rich Ah, mostly Aht, horizons, indicating three warm and mostly humid climatic episodes between ca. 80,000 and 50,000 yr B.P. The middle Pleistocene loesses contain at least four Bwt, or thick Bt, horizons developed during four interglacial periods, having climates similar to the present. Large parts of the Karewa Lake must have lasted until the end of the penultimate glacial age.

Abstract.

Abstract:
A brief introduction to diatoms, an important group of siliceous organisms, is presented. This includes the history of diatom study, their classification and morphology, cell structure, ecology, nutrition and reproduction, palaeogeography and evolutionary history. Association of diatoms with volcanism and silica dissolution and overgrowth of fossil diatoms are also provided. The significance of fossil diatoms in palaeoecology and biostratigraphy including palaeoceanography is highlighted. Fossil diatoms known from India and a few DSDP sites of the Indian Ocean are listed along with their geological horizon. In India, reports of marine and freshwater diatoms were made from the Miocene rocks of Nancowry Island (Ehrenberg, 1851) and from the Karewa Formation of Kashmir (Lundquist, 1936), respectively.

Abstract:
In December 1884 Charles Francis Adams (1857–1893) left Illinois, USA, by train for San Francisco and crossed the Pacific by ship to work as taxidermist at Auckland Museum, New Zealand, until February 1887. He then went to Borneo via several New Zealand ports, Melbourne and Batavia (Jakarta). This paper concerns a diary by Adams that gives a daily account of his trip to Auckland and the first six months of his employment (from January to July 1885). In this period Adams set up a workshop and diligently prepared specimens (at least 124 birds, fish, reptiles and marine invertebrates). The diary continues with three reports of trips Adams made from Auckland to Cuvier Island (November 1886), Karewa Island (December 1886) and White Island (date not stated), which are important early descriptive accounts of these small offshore islands. Events after leaving Auckland are covered discontinuously and the diary ends with part of the ship's passage through the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), apparently in April 1887. Adams's diary is important in giving a detailed account of a taxidermist's working life, and in helping to document the early years of Auckland Museum's occupation of the Princes Street building.

Unjust judgment ever haunts human life. One instance of such injustice is recorded in Psalm 58. Injustice begets deep human suffering. This article puts forth a reading of Psalm 58 using poetic criticism in an attempt to disclose the psalmist’s feelings amid his suffering. Taking on this aspect of the psalmist’s feelings differs subtly from other scholarly approaches to reading Psalm 58, such as the contribution of Marvin E. Tate. Instead, here the psalmist’s feelings are disclosed in the very fact of the suffering he experiences, although suffering is not the inception of the psalmist’s feelings. The suffering he experiences creates nothing of his feelings. Rather, divine intervention amid suffering is what stirs the very feelings being wrought within the psalmist. That intervention is registered in the psalmist’s recognition toward God. In the end, the event of God’s just judgment might inspire the church’s own disposition against unjust judgment.

Abstract:
This article presents Marion’s apologetic arguments about the maturity of Catholicity in facing secularism. He believes that secularism, which impacts moral decadence and the hegemony of secular political power, does not extinguish the spirit of Catholicity but becomes a Catholic moment—a chance for her to bear witness to the radicality of love. Authors use the qualitative research method, by making comparison between the theological results-study of Marion and some other theologians’ study and research (Balthasar, Kevin Hart, and Peter-Ben Smit), after having critically read their theological arguments. The results can be put forward in the following dialectical points of theological arguments. The Catholic Church has a matured experience in living a community of love based on the generous love of the Father. The Church demonstrates its responsibility in the world while contemplating the perfect City of God. The Church is not anti-political but simultaneously does not adhere to the hegemony of power. Throughout history, it has struggled to make a clear separation between religion and the state. The Church embraces the world with its two arms, namely, the Word and the Eucharist.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract:
Sanguis Martyrum Semen Christianorum. The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. This well-known expression of Tertulian concerns the growth of the faith in times of great challenge. History notes that devotion to and worship of the Eucharist has long been present in the Western Catholic tradition, and in fact has grown whenever there has been harrassment and challenge. Adoration of the Sacrament is a form of devotion that can help one to experience the presence of God in one’s life and at the same time it can be an expression of deep love of Him who has errected his tent in the midst of his people. Thus, there is a close relationship between the Eucharist and devotion. Nevertheless, it must be remembered that eucharistic devotion must never replace the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist. In the order of ecclesial values, the liturgical celebration of the Eucharist has the first and highest place.
