Full textAn attempt of storytelling using the tools of the architect The project is an investigation of what role storytelling could have within the field of architecture. With interactive theatre, where the audience’s choice of movement conducts the theatre experience, architecture within computer games and artificial worlds this kind of specific architecture has relevance. I have chosen to interpret the dystopian novel Kallocain by the Swedish author Karin Boye. Living today in a society permeated by fear for the unknown, false alarms and constant surveillance of citizens for their own security, the dystopia feels more relevant today than ever. The title of the project "The fourth wall" is an expression that is used in the field of theatre. It refers to the invisible wall and the silent agreement between the stage and the audience witch allows us to read representations of reality as temporary realities while watching a play. By altering the invisible wall and make it a real one the silent agreement disappears. But when stage becomes space it also affects our understanding of what I is real and what is fiction.

Full textKragulj, Ljiljana. "El desplazamiento y la fragmentación del yo poético en las poesías de Charlotte Mew, Karin Boye y Marina Tsvietáieva." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/285752.
Full textThis thesis focuses on the poetic production of Charlotte Mew (1869-1928), Karin Boye (1900-1941) and Marina Tsvetaeva (1892-1941). As important figures, although until recently very much ignored by the literary critics, the three poetesses are chosen for the purpose of enlightening the type of female writing that crosses the boundaries and general trends. From the late Victorianism (as is the case with English poetess Charlotte Mew) to Modernist currents of the first half of the twentieth century (as is the case with Swedish poetess Karin Boye and Russian Marina Tsvetaeva) similarities are found in creating a metaphorical space far from the imposed roles. Their newly created dichotomous worlds and their adopted means of expression are the main topics analysed. The first chapter analyses the poetic production of Charlotte Mew which began to receive wider critical attention in the 1960s. On the one hand, Mew was connected with the avant-garde of the early twentieth century due to her contribution to The Yellow Book and experiments with metre and form, but, on the other hand, she was never able to break free from the nineteenth century preoccupations and remained imaginatively tied to the Victorian period. Chapter two analyses the poems of the Swedish poetess Karin Boye. For better understanding of her poetic œuvre and life there is Margit Abenius’ biography in Swedish Drabbad av Renhet (Afflicted with Purity) written less than a decade after poetess’ tragic death. Abenius places considerable emphasis on the role of lesbianism in Boye’s life and this book is still today the most exhaustive study ever written. Chapter three deals with Marina Tsvetaeva’s lesser known and still untranslated poems such as those gathered in the volume Evening album or the epic poem The tzar-maiden. In addition, her poem cycle A Friend dedicated to Sophia Parnok and a short work in prose Letter to an Amazon are also in the focus of the present research. Finally, chapter four tries to define the common ground for all three poetesses examining the use of poetic masks, alienated persons and female figures characterized by their androgynous nature, constant references to roads, wanderings and travels that support the theory of the dichotomous vision. The female self in their works is split in other figures whose presence testifies the possibility of woman’s different and special destiny, far removed from everyday banalities.

Full textThis essay examines expressions of power and resistance, in relation to gender and sexuality, in Karin Boye´s novel Kallocain. I read the novel´s theme of resistance on a level of sexuality. Because differing sexualities and genderpractises are often hidden within the heteronormative mechanisms of oppression, I focus my reading on the meaning of the room and the eye. With theories of Michel Foucault and queer theories, I show how the novel´s rooms in both a material and an immaterial way demarcate based on heteronoramative structures. Further I use the theoretical tools of Foucault and show how looks become the gatekeepers of normativity. I investigate how Judith Butler’s theory on how gender is performatively constructed take shape in the novel and how there can be queer leakage, for example in the potentially homoerotic relation between the two main male characters. I will argue that the heteronormative novelworld of Kallocain contains an emancipating potential in the rooms for resistance created both through the spirit of community in the “fools community” and in other relations, foremost the one between the main male character and the female who is married to him.

Full textThis essay analyzes and compares depictions of consumption in Karin Boye’s Astarte (1931) and Denise Rudberg’s storlek 37 (2002). The theoretical framework consists primarily of Zygmunt Bauman’s thoughts on the consumer society, as well as texts by Max Weber, Walter Benjamin and Giorgio Agamben discussing capitalism’s relationship to religion. In Astarte, religion is a prominent theme, and often used metaphorically in relation to consumption. Consumption is often depicted as replacing religion, in a way that emphasizes a resemblance between them. In storlek 37, consumption is strongly connected to identity, and functions both as a certainty and a must. The differences between the depictions in the two novels reflect the roles of consumption in two different eras: in Astarte, it is a relatively new phenomenon in its modern sense, and in storlek 37 it has become more central to human life, often occuring without reflection and perceived as a matter of course. Astarte sets out a visible critique of consumption, depicting it as an endless desire or an illusion. In storlek 37, consumption is sometimes questioned, but portrayed nevertheless as inevitable.

Full textKarin Boyes Crisis (Kris) was published in 1934 as a contribution to the contemporary ideas of moral issues, challenging the dominating traditionalism within the literature critisism.
With different kinds of stylistic procedures is Crises expressing a self which seeks to relieve itself from the repressing experience of Language. The text shows an attempt to create meaning beyond the conventional system of linguistic signs, beyond the tradition of literature.
The focus in the essay is the self; the self is the basic structure and the theme of the text. Crisis shows it’s self-assuredness and points out a dialogue with the nietzschean philosophy. Nietzsche claims that the truth is a rhetorical creation, something which the language produces in the will of power. He expresses this standpoint with an effective simulate: the metal. My essay points out how this symbolic element functions in the text. The narrative structure leads to a solution of Malin’s, the protagonist’s, crisis: the dialogical structure of rebirth. The ritual pattern leads the protagonist to confront the inner Mother, a discussion taking it’s stand in Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytical theory. This structure is set to redraft and expose the linguistic bound to a dualistic gendered system. It also brings out the sensual and the passion as a part of the linguistic structure.
The analysis reveals a process where Malin seeks the solution in “Siv”. The narrative of Crisis is made up of sections to illustrate Malin´s inner struggle against the traditionalism, the religious system and the inner longing for passion. For Malin the transformation is initiated by the passion for Siv, a fellow student, and this passion confirms Malin´s new perspective on the world. “Siv” is formulated as a metaphor for a new sight and a new voice — the sight and voice of the self.
On the meta-level is the passion formulated as a passion for creation, between the text and the reader. The novel ends in the creation of the artistic self—the artist-as-woman.
