Artikkeli käsittelee Suomen ja Venäjän 1990-luvulla toteuttamaa alueellista yhteistyötä, joka on saanut vähän huomiota maamme lähihistorian tutkimuksessa. Aikakauden geopoliittinen ja taloudellinen murros luo mielenkiintoisen kontekstin alueelliselle yhteistyölle. Suomi rakensi suhteitaan uuteen Venäjään, talouden luonne globalisoitui ja alueiden merkitys suhteessa kansallisvaltioihin kasvoi. Syntyi jännitteitä ylikansallisten, kansallisten ja alueellisten toimijoiden välillä. Näitä jännitteitä on artikkelissa tarkasteltu niin kutsuttujen yhteiskunnallisten logiikoiden kautta, joista merkittävimpiä ovat perinteinen valtion logiikka, paikallisyhteisön logiikka ja markkinoiden logiikka. Artikkeli arvioi lähialueyhteistyön tavoitteita ja siitä käytyä julkista keskustelua näiden logiikoiden, Suomen 1990-luvun Eurooppa-politiikan ja Pohjoisen ulottuvuuden politiikan näkökulmista. Se myös tarkastelee lähialueyhteistyötä alueen (Pohjois-Karjala) ja valtion suhteen näkökulmasta. Lähteinä on käytetty eduskunnan pöytäkirjoja ja muuta materiaalia, sanomalehti Karjalaisen kirjoittelua sekä alueellisten organisaatioiden tuottamaa materiaalia

Abstract:
Objective: The transportation sector is one of the supporting factors in creating emissions, moreover, population growth stimulates high mobility requirements. The purpose of this study is to compare the Semarang City and Yogyakarta governments to realize sustainable mobility in their cities. Theoretical Framework: This research uses two theoretical perspectives from Jeon (2013) and Karjalainen & Juhola (2019). Where Jeon's theory is more focused on environmental sustainability and cultural preservation, while Karjalainen & Juhola's theory is focused on economic effectiveness. These two theories are used because they complement each other, especially to analyze the government's strategy in realizing green transportation and developing sustainable transportation mobility for society. Method: The methodology adopted for this research is a qualitative method with a case study approach, where the data collection techniques used include in-depth interviews and documentation. Interviews were conducted with Bappeda and related agencies, while documentation was taken from organizational performance reports and mass media. In addition, in processing and presenting research data using Nvivo tools. Results and Discussion: This study found that the public transport in Semarang City is more prepared to realize sustainable transportation compared with Yogyakarta. The Semarang City Government constructed a public transport system that is integrated, effective, accessible, and inclusive which is the reason for the community to move to public transport rather than private vehicles. Meanwhile, the public transport in Yogyakarta lacks facilities that are inclusive, accessibility, and proper infrastructure, forcing the community to find other options for their mobility mode such as private vehicles and online transport services. Originality/Value: This study is analyzing the sustainable mobility concept from government approach with collaborating the socio-environment perspective and economic consideration, which those are present the government context to plans, budgeting and implement it. The theory collaboration of this study will be a novelty, that can contribute to creating a new perspective on sustainability context of government study approach.

Tutkimukseni aiheena on ”Meillä on juuret”: Karjalainen identiteetti Karjalainen Kansa lehden valossa vuosina 1945–1958. Karjalainen Kansa on kyseisinä vuosina ilmestynyt lehti, joka oli tarkoitettu jatkosodan seurauksena kotiseutunsa menettäneelle Karjalan siirtoväelle. Tutkimukseni kohteena ja päälähteenä ovat kaikki vuosina 1945–1958 ilmestyneet Karjalainen Kansa -lehdet. Tutkimuksessani selvitän, miten karjalainen identiteetti lehdissä näkyi ja miten sitä tuotiin niissä esille. Systemaattisesti etenevän tutkimukseni menetelmät ovat kvalitatiivisia. Tutkin tarkasti Karjalaisessa Kansassa olleita asioita ja luokittelin niitä asiakokonaisuuksien mukaan. Samalla pohdin, miten asiat liittyvät karjalaiseen identiteettiin. Tärkeää taustatietoa työhöni olen saanut Karjalaa tai karjalaisuutta käsittelevästä tutkimuskirjallisuudesta. Tutkimukseni kannalta keskeisimpiä teoksia on ollut PIRKKO SALLINEN-GIMPL:N vuonna 1994 ilmestynyt tutkimus Siirtokarjalainen identiteetti ja kulttuurien kohtaaminen. Identiteettianalyyseissäni olen käyttänyt Sallinen-Gimpl:n tekemää identiteettijaottelua ryhmä-, etniseen- ja kulttuuri-identiteettiin. Tutkimukseni perusteella Karjalaisesta Kansasta oli havaittavissa ryhmäidentiteettiä esimerkiksi tilanteissa, joissa Karjalainen Kansa ajoi karjalaisen viljelijäväestön etuja, jotta se saisi itselleen mahdollisimman hyvän maatilan. Ryhmäidentiteettiä oli muutoinkin näkyvissä kaikissa karjalaisten edunvalvontaan liittyneissä asioissa. Etnistä identiteettiä ilmeni Karjalaisessa Kansassa etenkin kieleen ja uskontoon liittyvissä kysymyksissä. Lehdessä puolustettiin voimakkaasti karjalaisen siirtoväen oikeutta asettua ruotsinkielisille alueille, siitäkin huolimatta, että näiden alueiden kielisuhde olisi saattanut muuttua. Samoin lehdessä tuettiin ortodoksisen siirtoväen mahdollisuutta oman uskontonsa harjoittamiseen ja sen esille tuomiseen. Karjalaisen Kansan kulttuuri-identiteetti näkyi erityisesti 1950-luvun lehdissä, jolloin lehdissä ilmaistiin huolta karjalaisuuden säilymisestä. Näissä tilanteissa lehdissä kehotettiin siirtoväkeä pysymään rohkeasti karjalaisena ja vaalimaan erilaisia karjalaisia tapoja ja perinteitä, jotta heidän karjalaisuutensa tulisi Kanta-Suomessa esille. Karjalainen Kansa oli karjalaista identiteettiä täynnä ja identiteetti näkyi sekä ryhmä-, etnisellä- että kulttuuritasolla. Se halusi taistella sen puolesta eri tavoin, kaikissa mahdollisissa tilanteissa.

There are many modes of critical engagement with popular songs. Words may be ignored altogether in analysing the music; at the other extreme, word-led discussions can be in danger of treating the words in song as though they were page poems. An examination of different approaches to writing about song is followed by discussion of the words to five songs: Neil Diamond’s ‘I’m a Believer’ as recorded by the Monkees; James Taylor’s ‘Fire and Rain’; ‘Hey Jack Kerouac’ by 10,000 Maniacs, its words by Natalie Merchant being described as ‘anti-lyric’; ‘New World Water’ by Mos Def; and ‘Hän’ by the Finnish singer-songwriter J. Abstract:
The prevalence of profound deafness in the United Kingdom is reported as 9 per 10,000 in 3-year-olds to 16 per 10,000 in 9- to 16-year-olds, although it is estimated that these figures may be higher because of possible under-diagnosing (Fortnum et al. 2001). In England and Scotland, approximately 13 in 10,000 children have a permanent hearing impairment of 40 dB or more (moderate to profound) across the frequencies 500–4,000 Hz (Fortnum and Davis, 1997; Fortnum, 2003; Kennedy and McCann, 2008; MacAndie et al. 2003) and in 11 in 10,000 this loss is congenital. The remainder are acquired or progressive. Profound impairment (≥95 dB loss) occurs in 2.4 per 10,000. Bilateral sensorineural deafness had a prevalence of 21 per 10,000 in a Finnish birth cohort (1974–1987) (Vartiainen, Kemppinen, and Karjalainen 1997). A survey in the general population in Sichuan, China, found a prevalence of 1.9 per 1,000 profound deafness (Liu et al. 1993). Table 44.1 shows the World Health Organization (WHO) and British Society of Audiology definitions of degrees of deafness. Sensorineural deafness involves problems either in hair cell function in the cochlear or in the nerve transmission of sound. For bilateral sensorineural deafness, the diagnosis is made at variable ages in health systems in which there is no universal neonatal screening. This varies across cultures, but can still be surprisingly late even in modern health systems. One study of 106 children with bilateral sensorineural deafness showed a mean age for first diagnosis at 42 months (median 33 months) of age, with a range from 4 months to 11 years of age (Walch 2003). In another study in Glasgow, Scotland (Chaurasia and Geddes, 2008), only 50% of early childhood deafness presented before 2 years of age. Conductive deafness involves problems with sound travelling from the outer ear, through the middle ear, to the cochlear. The commonest cause is otitis media (“glue ear”), with losses usually in the mild to moderate range. About half of children between 2 and 4 years will have at least one episode of otitis media with effusion (OME) (Zielhuis, Rach, and Van den Brock 1990).

PhD-student Charlotta Engberg, Professor Michaela P?rn & PhD Katri Karjalainen The aim of the paper is to describe the challenges in developing Classroom tandem as a model for second language education for virtual learning environments in Finland. Finland is officially a bilingual country, where both the Finnish-speaking and the Swedish-speaking language groups are taught parallelly in monolingual schools according to the law. However, both language groups learn the other second national language as a subject in school. Classroom tandem as an instruction model for second language education was introduced in Finland in 2012, based on tandem as a language learning model, meaning that two persons learn the languages of each other in reciprocal cooperation and thereby switch languages. The tandem partners act in turns as the learning part in their second language and as the model and support in their first language. (Karjalainen, P?rn, Rusk & Bj?rkskog, 2013). Tandem is divided into face-to-face tandem and eTandem (Brammerts & Calvert, 2003; K?tter, 2002). Classroom tandem relies strongly on physical face-to-face meetings. However, these meetings are not possible to organize in all schools in Finland, due to the lack of closely located Finnish- and Swedish-speaking partner schools. Therefore, eClassroom tandem is now being developed in cooperation with language teachers as an applied virtual form of Classroom tandem. The challenge in developing eClassroom tandem mainly includes issues dealing with technology, task design and virtual cooperation between tandem partners. In order to increase the understanding of potentially existing virtual cooperation in all Swedish-speaking upper secondary schools in Finland with Finnish-speaking schools and schools abroad, a survey (based on interviews with 34 principals in 2015) was made. The results show that the most typical form of cooperation is however physical visits between schools, while extended virtual cooperation is rare. According to the principals' view the cooperation is however not always pedagogically organized, and therefore there is a need to pedagogically develop the virtual cooperation practices for language education. One possible model for this cooperation is eClassroom tandem, which increase the opportunities for second language learning in authentic situations with students of the same age, even in strongly monolingual areas.
