Abstract:

Op 21 november 2013 gaf Rudolf Boehm over Marx zijn ‘laatste lezing’, zo werdin een rondschrijven aangekondigd. Een lezing was het niet, want Boehm,gehinderd door een heel slecht zicht, kon nog nauwelijks iets lezen. Hij gafbijgevolg een uiteenzetting, een goed voorbereide voordracht van meer dan eenuur over wat hij bij het denken en schrijven van Karl Marx zelf denkt, ingaand opde vraag ‘wat hebben we vandaag aan de inzichten van de auteur van Das Kapital?’ Veel nieuws was niet te horen, maar daar ging het mij niet om, integendeel. Ikkwam luisteren naar wat Boehm ons wist te bieden: een vertolking van een bekendstuk, zoals we naar een bekend muziekstuk kunnen luisteren, waarin veeleer devertolking dan de neergeschreven compositie ons interesseert.

This source is all the more important because his as well as many other legal dossiers of activists were destroyed in 1940. Moreover, it appears that he produced many other autobiographical texts. These not only illuminate his personal experiences, but also the life in the German camp for civil prisoners in Holzminden during the second half of the war as well as life in the post-war Belgian prison.

Abstract:

In dit artikel wordt de religievisie van Karl Barth vanuit twee elementen van zijn context besproken: a) zijn verzet tegen vormen van religie die zich niet naar Gods openbaring in Christus richten; zijn context is een periode van opkomend nazisme en Deutsche Christen; b) zijn bepaling van het wezen van religie; in zijn context gebruikten velen de godsdienstfenomenologische methode om van elke religie het wezen aan te wijzen. Vanuit deze theologische en godsdienstwetenschappelijke benaderingen bestempelt Barth alle religie als mensenwerk en opstand tegen God, behalve wanneer christenen op sommige momenten door Gods genade boven zichzelf uitwijzen. Zonder deze vorm van wezensdenken is een dialogische benadering van andersgelovigen mogelijk die niet relativistisch is, want in elk echt gesprek gaat het om waar inzicht.

Abstract:

Karl Steinbuch (1917-2005) war ein Pionier in der Computertechnik und einﬂussreich in Futurologie und Kybernetik. Als Entwicklungsleiter bei Standard Elektronik Lorenz meldete er zahlreiche Patente an und entwickelte als Professor an der TH Karlsruhe 1961 eines der ersten künstlichen neuronalen Netze. Zugleich äußerte sich Steinbuch über Jahrzehnte politisch - mit Bestsellern und Artikeln, in Rundfunksendungen und im Fernsehen. Als Wahlkampfhelfer von Willy Brandt war er zugleich wissenschaftlicher Berater der SPD, ehe es 1972 zum oﬀenen Konﬂikt kam. Steinbuch näherte sich zunächst der Union, dann nationalistischen Standpunkten an. In der Person von Karl Steinbuch kristallisieren verschiedene Dimensionen des Verhältnisses von Technik und Politik, Technokratie und technological fix. Die Untersuchung der Wortmeldungen des Technik-Intellektuellen eröﬀnet somit Perspektiven, wie technisch strukturiertes Denken Vorstellungen über Gesellschaft und Politik prägen kann. Zugleich zeigt sich, dass ein konstantes Technikverständnis keineswegs zu konstanten politischen Ansichten führt, wenngleich eine Nähe zu autoritärem Denken oﬀenbar wird. Der Aufsatz liefert zudem neue Hinweise zur Biograﬁe Steinbuchs, deren weitere Erforschung aufgrund seiner zentralen Rolle in der politischen Kultur des deutschen Südwestens als Desiderat gekennzeichnet wird.

AbstractFive drawings by Karel van Mander are discussed. The two early ones were done while he was in Italy. Van Mander's frescos in Terni, including St. Bartholomew's Night, are then compared with Vasari's paintings in the Sala Regia in the Vatican as derivations. This is preceded by a review of the relevant bibliography, notably Noë, Miedema, Melion and Sapori. The article ends by advocating a multilateral, balanced, methodical approach.

Een korte beschrijving wordt gegeven van het leven en werk van dierenartsen die een rol hebben gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van de humane geneeskunde. Toeval of niet, alle hier aangehaalde figuren droegen in de eerste plaats bij tot de kennis van infectieuze ziekten. Als microbiologen kunnen hier vernoemd worden: Edmond Nocard, wiens naam werd gegeven aan het door hem beschreven bacteriegeslacht Nocardia en de gelijknamige ziekte, Victor Babès en Arnold Theiler die zich verdienstelijk hebben gemaakt in de parasitologie. Daarvan getuigen de geslachten Babesia en Theileria. De welbekende Salmonella en salmonellose ontlenen hun naam aan de Amerikaanse dierenarts Daniël Salmon. Karl F. Meyer gaf de eerste beschrijving van wat nu Mycoplasma is en leverde baanbrekend werk in de studie naar miltvuur en een reeks andere ziekte-agentia. Niet minder belangrijk was zijn aandeel in de introductie van de begrippen kiemreservoir en latente infectie. Naast de ontdekkingen in verband met infectieuze ziekten is er het aandeel van dierenartsen in de kennis van immuniteit. Auguste Chauveau vormde met zijn ‘retentietheorie’ de basis van de kennis van weerstand tegen bacteriën en virussen. De ontwikkeling door Gaston Ramon van anatoxines, geneutraliseerde toxines die immuniteit geven tegen onder meer tetanos en difterie, vormde een mijlpaal in de dagelijks toegepaste geneeskunde. Als chronologisch laatste in de rij moet Peter Doherty vermeld worden. Hij is de enige dierenarts die de Nobelprijs geneeskunde kreeg; dit voor zijn aandeel in de ontdekkingen omtrent cellulaire immuniteit.

Abstract:

Thyroid hormones are essential for normal brain development, and multiple alterations at behavioral, cognitive, cellular, and molecular levels have been described in animals made hypothyroid during development. Here we analyzed the effect of developmental hypothyroidism in the rat on the sensitivity to kainic acid-induced limbic seizures and the expression of kainate receptors in the hippocampus. Our results show that hypothyroid rats are extremely sensitive to the proconvulsant and neurotoxic effects of kainic acid (KA). Hypothyroid rats entered in status epilepticus at a dose of KA three times lower than that required to reach status epilepticus in control animals. In accordance with this, high levels of glial activation and neuronal loss after low KA dose injections were observed only in the hippocampus of hypothyroid rats. These effects correlated with an increased expression of kainate receptor subunits, excluding GluR5, in the hippocampus of hypothyroid animals. The concentrations of GluR6, GluR7, KAR1, and KAR2 (ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits of the kainic acid subtype) mRNAs were increased between 50 and 250% in hypothyroid animals relative to the values in controls. In agreement with these results, Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis showed a clear increase in the hippocampal content of GluR6/7 proteins in hypothyroid animals.

AbstractIn this article a drawing by Palma il Giovane, now owned by the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, is identified as a study for a painting by the same artist. The present whereabouts of this painting, which early on in the 17th century was in the collection of the Amsterdam merchant and art-lover Hendrick van Os, are unknown. Identification of the drawing was facilitated by the lengthy description of this work in Karel van Mander's biography of Palma Giovane in the Italian Lives of his Schilderboeck (Haarlem 1604). Van Mander describes the painting as showing Venus, Juno and Minerva seated at a table, while the angry Discord has just thrown the apple of discord in their midst. His description of the Van Os painting conforms perfectly, almost down to the smallest detail, with the Munich drawing. Van Mander, during his entire stay in Italy, never visited Venice. For his notion of Venetian painting he relied largely on the information he received from visitors to Venice and its surroundings or on Venetian works he had seen elsewhere, either in other Italian cities or in the Netherlands. For his description of Palma Giovanc's artistic skills Van Mander could rely on his firsthand knowledge of the painting owned by Hendrick van Os.

Abstract:We analysed the effect of a hurricane on a plant–ant network and on vegetation cover. Plant cover was sampled using linear sampling in several vegetation types: deciduous forest, a dry forest, sand dune pioneers, sand dune scrub, ecotone of freshwater marsh, deciduous forest and dune scrub, and mangrove forest. We sampled ant–plant interactions and vegetation cover before and after Hurricane Karl hitting (September 2010) the central coast of the state of Veracruz, Mexico. The pre-hurricane network consisted of 16 plant and 25 ant species in 52 associations. The post-hurricane network consisted of 17 plant and 20 ant species in 56 associations. We found a significant decrease in the total linear cover of EFN-bearing plants between October 2009 (646 m, no hurricane effect) and October 2010 (393 m, after hurricane Karl) (total sample length 2025 m). Both networks were significantly nested (0.999 and 0.973, P < 0.001), suggesting that network topology remained similar. Our results show changes in several network characteristics and species proportions. The number of plant species that contributed to nestedness vs. idiosyncratic species did not differ significantly in the pre-hurricane network, while the number of plant species that contributed to nestedness vs. idiosyncratic species did differ significantly in the post-hurricane network. The number of ant species that contributed to nestedness vs. idiosyncratic species differed significantly in the pre-hurricane network, and also in the post-hurricane network. Differences in nestedness contributions of species before and after the hurricane reflect an alteration from a generalized, highly nested, more stable pre-disturbance network, to a more low-degree or specialized network (i.e. fewer interactions among generalist species, those species with the most associations). The maintenance of important core components of the network after a huge disturbance, suggests a short-term resilience typical of mutualistic networks.

Abstract:

The article discusses the status of literature in teaching geography. Like cartography, literature maps the space and assigns proper names which allow us to see the places of “condensed, multiplied time” (Claudio Magris). Literary maps bind topography with history and thus realise a geopolitical project of “thinking of place, time and action as coherent unity” (Karl Schlögel). Such literary names as Conrad’s “heart of darkness” or mare nostrum, mare monstrum from Dariusz Czaja’s essay, in geography didactics can reveal the drama of “building up of land and history” (Magris) and thanks to this, a map used in the didactic process can lead to cathartic experience, i.e. it can sharpen, activate and sensitize the pupils’ eye.

Abstract:

Geriatric patients in various outpatient department (OPDs) have been found to agonize from elder abuse and neglect (EAN). Such suffering imposes depressive states within individuals, which in turn affects treatment compliance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of sensitization (psychotherapeutic) of family caregivers (FCGs) upon two denture treatment parameters (maintenance and treatment satisfaction) among EAN patients and compare the differences in outcome with non-abused patients. A survey of completely edentulous subjects (n = 860, aged 41–80 years) provided a sampling frame of 332 EAN patients from which 150 patients (including FCGs) fulfilling the study criteria were distributed (simple random, convenient) into two groups (Group A—control, Group B—test). FCG sensitization for subjects in Group B was performed by a clinical psychologist in 2–4 short (30 min) sessions. Demographic characteristics (frequency) were measured using a self-reported questionnaire, denture maintenance was measured using a denture hygiene index (scores), and treatment satisfaction was analyzed on a 10-point visual analog scale. Relevant data were calculated for means and absolute/relative frequencies. Any difference between two groups was estimated using an unpaired t-test while the level of relationship was determined by Karl Pearson’s test at a p-value of < 0.05. The results showed highest frequency (38.6%) for neglect, with elder neglect (EN) being most common (38.14% alone and 14% in combination). EN was found more if the FCG was a son (52%), in the age group (21–30 years), and with low education and low income (75%). Patients whose FCGs were counselled (Group B) demonstrated low denture plaque scores (mean = 1.38 ± 0.618), while demonstrating comparatively higher scores in six different parameters of treatment satisfaction. Differences between the two groups for both parameters were also found to be statistically significant. Psychotherapeutic counselling in the form of FCG sensitization brings better results of denture maintenance and treatment satisfaction.
