Marx died on March 14, 1883. Exactly twenty years later, on March 14, 1903, Rosa Luxemburg’s reflections on Karl Marx were published in German in Vorwärts, the newspaper of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. tripleC publishes an English translation of Luxemburg’s essay on the occasion of Marx’s bicentenary. The recent and very useful edition of Rosa Luxemburg’s economic works compiled by Peter Hudis ( The Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg) left out one essay: her review of the first volume of Karl Marx’s Theories of Surplus Value, edited by Karl Kautsky in 1905. While book reviews are nowadays a minor genre usually limited to a short length, that was not the case when Luxemburg wrote her essay: her review – published in Vorwärts, the daily of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), just before the outbreak of the Russian Revolution of 1905 – was extensive and dealt with a variety of theoretical and political issues. We offer the first critical edition in English of this work, setting it against the background of Rosa Luxemburg’s previous works and of the revisionist controversy within the SPD and the Second International, as well as contextualizing it within the framework of contemporary polemics with bourgeois economics, particularly with the German historical school and with marginalism. We also offer a comparison between the methodological issues raised by Luxemburg in her review and those raised by Rudolf Hilferding in his review of the third and last volume of Marx’s Theories of Surplus Value, published in 1911. We close with a brief assessment of the place of Luxemburg’s essay in the later development of her economic thought, concluding with The Accumulation of Capital, published in 1913.

Die Gemütsverfassung derer, die am Abend des 4. August 1914 – nach jener denkwürdigen Sitzung des Deutschen Reichstags, in der die sozialdemokratische Fraktion geschlossen für die Kriegskredite stimmte – in der Wohnung Rosa Luxemburgs zusammenkamen, könne man sich denken. Aber während etwa Karl Liebknechts folgende Kämpfe gegen die Parteiinstanzen in einem „nach dem Krieg erschienenen Briefwechsel” dokumentarisch festgelegt seien, unterrichte uns über Rosa Luxemburgs Leben in der ersten bitteren Zeit nach jenem 4. August „kein Brief, kein einziges Dokument” schrieb etwa zwei Jahrzehnte später Henriette Roland Holst in ihrer Biographie der toten Freundin. Daß solch ein Brief von Rosa Luxemburg sich ausgerechnet in dem Nachlaß ihres Landsmanns Troelstra finden könnte, jenes langjährigen Führers der holländischen Sozialdemokratie, den sie, selbst auf dem radikalen Flügel der holländischen Arbeiterbewegung stehend, fortgesetzt befehdet hatte, dürfte ihr kaum in den Sinn gekommen sein.

Revolução e Terror andaram sempre de braços dados? Uma parcela significativa do que foi outrora a esquerda acredita que sim e propõe o fortalecimento da democracia como alternativa à revolução, vista como fonte do totalitarismo. Este artigo procura contribuir para esse debate, mostrando a alternativa revolucionária e democrática apresentada por Rosa Luxemburg. Para ela, a democracia não é um valor universal abstrato, mas justamente o resultado de um processo revolucionário em que as massas proletárias, atuando com irrestrita liberdade, lançam os fundamentos de uma "nova época". Entretanto, a revolução alemã, em que Rosa Luxemburg e Karl Liebknecht tiveram um papel central, fracassa e ambos são assassinados. Derrota que traça, de certa forma, o destino da Alemanha contemporânea.

O presente texto, que serve de apresentação à série de cartas traduzidas pela A. e publicadas a seguir junto ao original alemão (Karl Kraus), esboça em rápidos traços a personalidade de Rosa Luxemburg, tendo como pano de fundo a cultura do seu tempo. Procura-se sugerir que se Rosa é uma personagem tão rica e interessante, isso deve-se ao amálgama, existente na sua formação, entre a Bildungsbürgertum e a atmosfera revolucionária proveniente da Rússia.

Abstract The present excerpt is taken from a book that stands for the concept of capital-imperialism in order to explain the contemporary period (which integrates theory of value and the state). It proposes a debate, with David Harvey, on the concept of accumulation by dispossession, arguing that expropriation forms are not limited to a "primitive" moment but they are part of an enlarged form of expansion of capital and capitalism itself. It presents a comparative investigation between the formulations present in the works of Karl Marx, Karl Kautsky and Rosa Luxemburg, to critically reflect on the concepts of "external/internal", as well as expropriation and capitalist accumulation in the contemporary context.

This article presents an alternative account of the Enlightenment project than the one offered by Steven Pinker in Enlightenment Now. It also offers some insights into how historic changes concretely occurred. Based on a Marxian reading of history we attempt to complete the portrait of human progress that Pinker provides. The main arguments in support of our alternative explanation of social progress are based on insights taken from important works written by such intellectuals as Giovanni Arrighi, Andre Gunder Frank, Antonio Gramsci, Chris Harman, Eric Hobsbawm, C. L. R. James, Karl Korsch, Domenico Losurdo, Georg Lukács, Rosa Luxemburg and Herbert Marcuse. We believe that our explanation of progress is complementary to Pinker’s and provides a more realistic appreciation of the Enlightenment project.

Mao Zedong’s Philosophy of WarThe aim of this article was to do some critical analysis of Mao Zedong military writing. Our method was to intepretate his manuscripts and compare his thesis to thesis of top marxists thinkers like Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin and Rosa Luxemburg about the war and warfare. In next step we also compare Mao strategic thought with thought of classical masters of art of war like Carl von Clausewitz and Sun Zi. Finally we did some comments on political aspects in Maoist theory of war. In result we draw some conclusions. Firstly we can say that Mao did nothing new in marxist philosophy of war and his dialectics of war were vague and vulgar. Secondly we can say that his military writings was mostly influenced by Clausewitz through soviet military thought rather than Sun Zi. In the other hand his theory of guerilla warfare was to some extent original and finally we can describe Mao’s strategic thought as some kind of progress in twenty century art of war.

During the last few decades, the concept of primitive accumulation ( ursprüngliche Akkumulation) introduced by Karl Marx and expanded by Rosa Luxemburg has been revived and improved. Accordingly, scholars have used this framework not to characterize a past moment in the history of capitalism, but to grasp the continuous process of coupling and uncoupling geographical and social spheres in the capital accumulation in different fields: financialization, the care economy, green grabbing, the sharing economy, real estate bubbles, data mining, etc. Despite the quality and productivity of these debates, they are still focused on authors and phenomena observed in the Global North, ignoring a long tradition of similar discussions developed especially in Latin America. The article seeks to decentre these debates by taking seriously into account approaches which address primitive accumulation from the perspective of (post)colonial and (post)slave societies. It coins the concept entangled accumulation to emphasize the interdependencies between practices of exploitation and expropriation, wage and slave labour, state power and illegal violence, and capitalist and non-capitalist economies, which have shaped capital accumulation throughout history.

Thomas Piketty’s book Capital in the Twenty-First Century has resulted in a sustained political and academic debate about capitalism in the 21st century. This article discusses the relevance of the book in the context of Karl Marx’s works and the political economy of the Internet. It identifies 3 common reactions to Piketty’s book: 1) dignification; 2) denigration of the work’s integrity; 3) the denial of any parallel to Marx. I argue that all three reactions do not help the task of creating a New Left that is urgently needed in the situation of sustained capitalist crisis. Marxists will certainly view Piketty’s analysis of capitalism and political suggestions critically. I argue that they should however not dismiss them, but like Marx and Engels aim to radicalise reform suggestions. In relation to the Internet, this paper discusses especially how insights from Piketty’s book can inform the discussion of tax avoidance by transnational Internet companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon. For establishing an alternative, non-commercial, non-capitalist Internet one can draw insights about institutional reforms and progressive capital taxation from Piketty that can be radicalised in order to ground radical-reformist Internet politics.“The daily struggle for reforms, for the amelioration of the condition of the workers within the framework of the existing social order, and for democratic institutions, offers to the social democracy the only means of engaging in the proletarian class war and working in the direction of the final goal-the conquest of political power and the suppression of wage labor. Between social reforms and revolution there exists for the social democracy an indissoluble tie. The struggle for reforms is its means; the social revolution, its aim” (Rosa Luxemburg 1899, 41).

To articulate what is past does not mean to recognize ‘how it really was.’ It means to take control of a memory, as it flashes in a moment of danger.The last two years have seen some significant anniversaries being celebrated – one hundred years of the Bolshevik Revolution, fifty years since May 1968, two hundred years since the birth of Karl Marx and, most recently, the birth centenary of Rosa Luxemburg. As a student activist more or less masquerading as an amateur theatre historian, I have never felt more in need of the tools of my so-called trade than during these interesting times when I found myself assiduously attending conferences, memorials, re-enactments and commemorative performances earmarking moments of radical histories. David Wiles's article, charting the contours – often clear and sometimes obscure – of the field of theatre history as it stands at the moment brings into relief some of the questions that have been running in the background of the heady extended solidarity party that has been my engagement with the field in recent times, resonating with his conclusion of history-writing as ‘practice, not product’. I will attempt to glean from Wiles's reflections some points that I feel may be important for scholars for whom history writing is most certainly a ‘social practice’, if not also a deeply political act.

On 29 December 1918 Gustav Noske was appointed as a People's Commissar and charged with command of the armed forces in Germany. Within days Noske was confronted with an armed in surrection in Berlin, the so-called Spartacist Uprising, and subsequent revolutionary outbreaks in Bremen, Braunschweig, and the Ruhr, where sympathy for the events in Berlin existed. Relying on volunteer units, the Free Corps (drawn from war veterans, students, and the middle classes), Noske developed a powerful army on which he could rely to suppress the revolutionary violence from the Left. Using military force and martial law, he reestablished order throughout Germany in 1919 and 1920. The results of the so-called Noskepolitik were at best mixed. Mass movements based on the councils (Räte), often identified as “bolshevism’ by Noske and his contemporaries, were indeed suppressed, but the price was very high: counterrevolution and right-wing terror developed to the point that massive protests were provoked among wide segments of the working class. Bloodshed ensued, including the political murders of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht by members of the Free Corps. Many workers became alienated from the newly formed Weimar Republic, while the Reichswehr drifted into hostility toward the young democracy, and some units joined in the Kapp-Lüttwitz Putsch in March 1920. Noske, already under serious criticism from his own party, the Social Democrats, was forced to resign because of his inability to control the army and guarantee its loyalty to the Republic.

El ensayo de Walter Benjamin, Para una crítica de la violencia, fue escrito en una fase temprana de la vida del autor, contaba con 29 años. Su contexto es el de la primera posguerra mundial, el del triunfo de la revolución rusa, la derrota de la revolución alemana en 1919 y la muerte allí de Rosa Luxemburgo y Karl Liebnecht, y de la publicación del texto de Georg Sorel con el título de Reflexiones sobre la violencia, (Sorel, 1978), es decir, un contexto agitado y de ebullición social y política. Una época de transición de las revoluciones burguesas a las revoluciones socialistas con la posibilidad de la concreción de la utopía. Luego, la violencia estaba como tema, al orden del día. Violencia de la guerra, pero también la violencia revolucionaria, aparte de la violencia cotidiana, persistente y permanente entre los seres humanos. Diferente del texto de Sorel, no existían antecedentes de un discurso crítico sobre el tema de la violencia. La violencia revolucionaria se había tematizado, pero en una perspectiva instrumental de derribamiento del Estado burgués por las huestes del proletariado.


 
 
 Michael Heinrich (Heidelberg, 1957) viene de publicar Karl Marx o el nacimiento de la sociedad moderna, el primer tomo de una biografía monumental de Marx que será completada en los próximos años con una extensión prevista de tres o cuatro gruesos volúmenes. La edición original alemana de 2018 fue acompañada por traducciones casi simultáneas al portugués, el inglés y el francés. Editorial Akal de Madrid anuncia para 2019 la aparición de la versión castellana de este primer volumen.
 Heinrich visitó recientemente Buenos Aires, invitado por el CeDInCI y la Fundación Rosa Luxemburgo para participar de nuestro evento internacional Marx 200 años. Exponente de una corriente alemana conocida mundialmente por postular “una nueva lectura de El Capital”, miembro del colectivo editor de la revista PROKLA y autor de numerosos libros consagrados a la opera magna de Karl Marx — Crítica de la economía política. Una introducción a El Capital de Marx (2004), Cómo leer El Capital de Marx (2012)—, ofreció el pasado 23 de noviembre en nuestro país una conferencia titulada “Nuevos textos y nuevas lecturas de El Capital de Marx”.
 Poco antes de su conferencia del 22 de noviembre, le planteamos la pregunta: ¿Por qué una nueva biografía de Marx?. Heinrich aceptó el desafío, nos propuso como título “Sobre la necesidad de una nueva biografía de Karl Marx” y nos hizo llegar para Políticas de la memoria el texto que tenemos el gusto de publicar a continuación, que sirvió de guía a su exposición. Nos apresuramos a traducirlo considerando que sus reflexiones metodológicas sobre la biografía histórica así como sus consideraciones acerca de la hermenéutica de los textos mediada por la recepción dialogaban muy bien con nuestra agenda historiográfica, enriqueciéndola con nuevos desarrollos.

 La vida de una persona es algo diferente a su biografía, ya sea la escrita por él mismo o por un otro. Una biografía no es capaz de transmitir más que una imagen incompleta de esa vida, dado que las fuentes disponibles (también una autobiografía necesita fuentes) son más o menos fragmentarias. Además, la representación biográfica nunca es independiente de los intereses de quien escribe, tanto de sus puntos de vista personales como de aquellos condicionados por su época. Y, por encima de esto, siempre ha cambiado lo que en términos históricos se espera de una biografía, aquello que es considerado una biografía buena, o adecuada. De ahí que no tenga nada de trivial la pregunta acerca de la forma en que la escritura biográfica es hoy posible y significativa.
 
 
 

The purpose of this article is to analyze the so-called human capital theory and to clarify the concept of public good, as well as the frequency of the expression "public" in the Declarations adopted at the Regional Conferences of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2008 and 2018. For this, in methodological terms, this article analyzes documents from certain International Organizations (UNESCO, World Bank and OECD) and seeks theoretical support in Reinhart Koselleck's History of Concepts and other authors such as Roger Dale, Susan Robertson, Bob Jessop, Stephen Gill, Paul Samuelson , Karl Polanyi and Pierre Bourdieu.ResumoO presente artigo tem o objetivo de analisar a chamada teoria do capital humano e precisar o conceito de bem público, bem como a frequência da expressão “público” nas Declarações aprovadas nas Conferências Regionais de Educação Superior na América Latina e Caribe, em 2008 e 2018. The dramatic changes that have unfolded in the global economy in recent years make this a worthwhile moment to explore the similarities and differences between Karl Marx and Rosa Luxemburg’s understanding of what is now termed the “globalization of capital.” Both Marx and Luxemburg were intensely interested in the impact of the expansive logic of capital accumulation upon non-capitalist or developing societies, as seen in Marx’s late writings on agrarian societies, communal formations in India and North Africa, and among Native Americans and in Luxemburg’s studies of some of the same formations in her Introduction to Political Economy and Accumulation of Capital. Although Luxemburg was unaware of Marx’s writings on these issues, since many of Marx’s manuscripts on non-Western societies are only now coming to light, there are striking similarities, on a number of issues, between her approach and Marx’s analyses. At the same time, there are also serious differences in their approach, in that Marx adopted a far less unilinear and deterministic approach to the fate of non-Western social formations as compared to Luxemburg. This paper explores these similarities and differences by exploring a number of manuscripts by Marx and Luxemburg that have only recently come to light or which have received insufficient attention, such as Marx’s Notebooks on Kovalevsky and Luxemburg’s studies of pre-capitalist societies of 1907, originally composed as part of her research for the Introduction to Political Economy. One of the article’s aims is to generate a re-examination of both Marx and Luxemburg’s contributions in light of these less-known writings. Les transformations dramatiques qui ont eu lieu dans l’économie globale ces dernières années rendent opportun d’explorer les similarités et les différences entre les analyses de ce qui est maintenant appelé la mondialisation du capital par Karl Marx et Rosa Luxemburg. Marx et Luxemburg étaient tous les deux très intéressés par l’impact de la logique expansionniste de l’accumulation du capital sur les sociétés non capitalistes et celles en voie de développement, comme en témoignent les écrits tardifs de Marx sur les sociétés agraires, les structures communales en Inde, en Afrique du Nord et parmi les Autochtones de l’Amérique du Nord, ainsi que les études de Luxemburg de certaines de ces mêmes formations dans son Introduction à l’économie politique et L’accumulation du capital. Bien que Luxemburg n’était pas au courant des écrits de Marx sur ces sujets, parce que beaucoup de ses manuscrits sur les sociétés non-Occidentales sont seulement maintenant en train de paraître, il y a des similarités frappantes, sur de nombreux sujets, entre leurs approches. En même temps, il demeure des différences importantes, dans la mesure où Marx a adopté une approche beaucoup moins linéaire et déterministe que Luxemburg à propos du destin des structures sociales non-Occidentales. Cet article explore ces similarités et différences en explorant plusieurs manuscrits de Marx et Luxemburg qui ont seulement récemment vu le jour ou qui ont reçu une attention insuffisante, comme Les Carnets de Kovalevsky de Marx et les études de Luxemburg sur les sociétés pré-capitalistes de 1907, écrites à l’origine dans le cadre de ses recherches pour l’Introduction à l’économie politique. Un des objectifs de l’article est de générer un nouvel examen des contributions de Marx et de Luxemburg, à la lumière de ces écrits moins bien connus.
