Abstract:
Although it was, until recently, unfashionable in certain circles to say this, Marx was not a philosopher in any interesting sense. He was a social theorist. As social theory, I am thinking primarily of two areas (in all social theory, there is also a large body of empirical work, which I am not competent to comment upon): (a) the methodology of social inquiry, and its metaphysical presuppositions, and (b) normative philosophy (ethics and political theory).

Abstract:
This article is a preliminary attempt to understand the theology of Karl Barth in its relation to the ideas of Karl Marx. Barth mentions the name of Marx many times throughout his own writings and gives some theological responses to Marx’ thoughts, in modes both appreciative and critical. Barth even once claimed that theology properly worked out would result in a promise for liberation preferable to that of Marx. In this initial phase of research, the present article surveys the mentions of Marx throughout Barth’s works. The author considers each mention in context, before sketching in general and then identifying in specific certain themes resulting from this preliminary investigation, to be explored in further research.

Abstract:
The English translation of Sven-Eric Liedman’s Marx-biography A World to Win: The Life and Works of Karl Marx was published two weeks before Marx’s bicentenary. This article presents reflections on Liedman’s book and asks how one should best write biographically about Marx. The paper compares Liedman’s biography to the Marx-biographies written by Jonathan Sperber (Karl Marx: A Nineteenth-Century Life) and Gareth Stedman-Jones (Karl Marx: Greatness and Illusion). A biography is a way of repeating a person’s life, works and age in a process of reconstruction and retelling. The question that arises is how to write a biography as a dialectical text. Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper discusses the first French edition of Capital volume 1, revised by Marx, analyzed by Kevin Anderson (1983) in this journal and subsequent work, and partially incorporated into the new German edition by Thomas Kuczynski (2017), based largely on the second German edition. We argue that both Marx and Anderson are too generous (and Engels too negative) in their respective assessments of the translation and that it has found its appropriate place in the now definitive German version which will, we hope, be translated into other languages.
