Full textThere is an established perception in society that the research community is closed and difficult to reach for the public. The research community has been criticized for not sharing research findings, which negatively affects the spread of knowledge in society. Against this background, an interest was gained in studying the research community and the people acting within it. This ethnographic study has therefore observed a research group at Karolinska Institutet. The purpose was to investigate how openness and exclusiveness expresses itself in social interactions between the individuals in the research group and with us outsiders. How is openness and exclusiveness expressed in interactions within the studied research group? How do different situations affect what kind of interaction that appears? And how does the research group maintain its appearance towards outsiders? To answer these questions, Goffman's dramaturgical model is used as a theoretical framework. This theory provides explanations for different types of interactions and the factors that affect them. The result of the study shows that openness to outsiders appeared at the individual level and exclusiveness towards outsiders appeared at the group level. We also found incentives and hints that there was a collective backstage that us visitors were not allowed to access. The result also shows that roles and those involved in a situation have greater influence on what interaction occurs than the physical environment do. Our conclusion is that the group's interaction-patterns take place in four different dimensions; a collective front-stage, a collective backstage, an individual backstage as well as an individual front-stage

Full textDenna uppsats undersöker kulturella effekter som uppstår i forskningsorganisationers arbete med core faciliteter och hur de kan tillägna sig den rådande kulturella miljön. Tidigare litteratur på området core faciliteter utesluter kultur som koncept och litteratur inom organisationskultur har begränsat empiriskt material gällande core faciliteter. Genom en kvalitativ studie ämnar denna uppsats att fylla i några av nämnda luckor. En överblick av rådande litteratur presenteras och ett ramverk för att utföra en analys har valts. Empiriskt material has insamlats från Karolinska Institutet i Stockholm där de har pågående arbete med att tillmötesgå utmaningar inom och utveckla sina core faciliteter. Analysen visar att kultur kan vara orsaken till felriktade värderingar, ineffektiva metoder och barriärer för kommunikation. Vidare visas att en organisation behöver ha tydliga definitioner, skapa strukturer som är linje med sin kultur samt jobba med uppföljning och utvärdering. Som ett avslutande bidrag visar studien även på ett annat teoretiskt område där vidare undersökningar skulle vara relevant, nämligen knowledge management.

Full textSociety's demands for auditing and evaluating public activities are increasing, while the criticism of these processes is clear, both in research literature and in mass media. This paradox makes quality evaluation within public organizations interesting to study. Studies show that the profession in the organizations evaluated often has insufficient knowledge about why the evaluation is conducted and what the results from it are expected to be used for. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the profession at Karolinska Institutet (KI) experience that the activities they represent are evaluated, The results could hopefully be of use when developing of existing or creating new quality systems. The study focuses on how the profession experiences the purposes and potential uses of evaluation. In order to achieve the purpose of the study and answer the study questions, nine program directors were interviewed at KI during spring 2017. The transcribed interviews were then analyzed and interpreted, based on a theoretical framework based on both general organization theory and theories that focus on evaluation and quality. The study's results show, among other things, that there is initially some skepticism among the program directors regarding evaluations, but that the evaluation process once implemented is perceived as relatively rewarding. The evaluation process seems to be more rewarding than the product being created.

Full textThis thesis examines cultural and other symbolic capital amongst medical students in a Bourdian sense. Medical students at Karolinska Institutet, a Swedish medical university, were compared to four other prestige full educational programs in the Stockholm area. Investments in educational capital, media habits and other cultural investments were compered. The data was collected at an earlier stage at Uppsala University using a postal questionnaire. The data was strengthening with interviews with the medical students. The medical students demonstrated that they had a lot in common with students from the other elitist education programs that was part of the study. However they also had an extra dimension that was not found amongst the other students and that was a sense of an altruistic thought, e.g. that they wanted to “do good” and that was the reason why they wanted to become doctors.

Full textDenna studie kommer att behandla ämnet om mediastrategier inom svensk HIV/AIDS-forskning. Under hela 1980-talet kom HIVAIDS att spela en betydande roll i samhället, framförallt inom den växande mediasvären. Uppmärksamheten runt en sjukdom var av ett slag som inte tidigare upplevts framförallt för läkarna som behandlade de sjuka i den omfattning de hade möjlighet. Min ambition under detta arbete är att undersöka hur forskarna idag arbetar mot media för att undvika problem med att misstolkas. Hur medveten är arbetet, finns det en tydlig strategi för att undvika en situation som den på 1980-talet då det förekom stor förvirring runt sjukdomen. Undersökningen har baserats på pressmeddelanden från Karolinska institutet vars innehåll fått svara för hur forskarnas strategi utformats. En viktig komponent för analysen har varit att se hur medicinens inre normer påverkat deras sätt och omfattning i vilket de agerat. Genom analysen har det framkommit att forskarnas relation till media idag är mycket professionell och genomtänkt. Det som kan begrundas är att de givetvis alltid kan förbättra sina metoder för interaktion med media. Faran som finns är deras självuppfattning vilket kommer att styra deras framtida ambitioner gällande sitt informationsarbete.

Full textKarolinska Institutet has chosen to obtain a new system for the administration purposes of their employees and staff members. The Institute currently has an administration panel that handles employee data by the name of ”KKAWeb”, which is built on J2EE. This is a web application through which one can add new employees, read information about employees and update such information. The latter is done today through Hibernate calls, which read and update data from/to the Oracle databases of Karolinska Institutet. The aim is to go towards an architecture which has loose couplings: a RESTfull web service which deliver data and receive changes. A stand-alone web service which in the future can be used by other institutional systems which are in need of similar data; also, a web interface which meets the same functionality as the KKAWeb does today. This without having underlying couplings to different data layers. Rather, a web interface which instead talks REST with the web service to accommodate for its data needs. Thus, a submission has been presented of a web service and a web application. In the application the new administration panel interface has views for finding an employee, and views for presentation and updating of an employee. In the backend lies a web service, built in ITDI (IBM Tivoli Directory Integrator), from which the administration panel consumes data from. Future work within the Institute aims to migrate the old administration panel KKAWEB to the new web application, where all form of data communication is done through the implemented web service layer.

Full textResearch on human physiology and how it is working is updated daily. In the world of sports they are testing new as old, natural as unnatural preparations and different training methods continuously in order to optimize athletic performance. A substance that´s been research on, up till today is nitric oxide and its influence in the body. From being interpreted as a harmful substance in the body, it went to possibly help heart disease patients, and also optimize the physic in sport performance. Nitric oxide is formed in the body naturally by oxygen, but it can also be formed without oxygen through the ingestion of nitrates found in many vegetables. Studies on nitrate in the sport field have concentrated on the effect on endurance sports and the effect has been shown to increase the efficiency and the blood flow to the muscles. Later on they also found that nitrate supplementation seems to give a lower Vo2max together with an increased time to exhaustion. These findings are really interesting because normally a reduction in Vo2max leads us to a decrease in workability. All these studies give an idea on how nitrate works aerobic, that is with oxygen. The research has not yet an explanation on how nitrate affect anaerobic work and maximum performance that occurs in weight training. The purpose of this study was to investigate how nitrate affects muscle function and endurance in strength training. In a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial, eight men (age 19-26, 23 (±2, 3)) consumed nitrate or a placebo (0.1 mmol/kg bodyweight/day) for three days. During the fourth day the test persons were tested in four different strength tests to see how they performed. Lactate and glucose concentrations were measured to see how the laktacid system was influenced. The study gave no support that dietary nitrate affects weight training. The results from the occasion with nitrate respectively placebo remained essentially unchanged. It was concluded that an intake of nitrate not will give any significant effects on the model of strength training. The main reason for this may be that nitrate provides the greatest impact on long-term work-duration and mainly during aerobic work. In this case the main use is mostly stored energy in the body, and the energy systems in which oxygen is required will probably not be of major importance.

Full textThis thesis investigates how gynaecology was established as a medical speciality in Sweden in the 1860s and onwards. Gender, power, professionalisation and the production of scientific knowledge are central themes. While previous research has shown that gynaecology as a discipline depends upon notions of Woman as radically different from Man, I show how this was manifested within Swedish gynaecology, an initially all male environment. Of special interest is institutionalisation, early career-paths and the development of therapy methods and theory. I argue that gynaecology reproduced and contributed to notions of sex-difference and a gender complementary way of thinking.
While gynaecology was formed as a surgically interventionist speciality with strong manly connotations, an education reform aiming at opening higher education to women was simultaneously discussed and eventually carried out during the 1860s and 70s. The advocates of this reform portrayed women as especially fit for becoming teachers and physicians, particularly treating women and children. Thus, two opposing gendered professional ideals operated. By focusing an elite group of early women physicians, I outline how the gynaecological construction of womanliness related to women physicians and how women physicians engaged with this notion: what strategies they used to enter a profession as manly as gynaecology had become; and how women gynaecologists engaged with their men colleagues’ therapeutic methods and views on patients and women.

Full textThe aim of this study is to examine how Karolinska Institutets (KI) crisis communication looked like during the occurrences of the scientist Paolo Macchiarini that arise mostly due to a documentary made by Swedish Television (SVT) and producer Bosse Lindquist. The study focuses on the occurrences that arise mainly in the beginning of 2016 even though it all started further back in time. To examine this occurrence, we look at how KI communicated with their stakeholders and if KI utilized any crisis management strategies in accordance to this studies theory and to Coombs (2012) recommendations that are presented in the theory chapter of this study. The approach of this study is based on a quantitative content analysis as method, where we critically examine all of the news articles that concerns Macchiarini and were released on KI’s website during 2015-2016. The study will be based in the theory Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). And to be able to examine the crisis communication of KI looked like during the crisis, and if they used any crisis communication management per this study’s theoretical framework, we have chosen to examine ten variables in the analyze of the 50 news articles. In addition to the content analysis we have performed an interview with the communication Director of KI to get a deeper understanding of their communication, both in-house and external, and to locate how KI handled their crisis communication during the crisis. The result of this study shows that KI partly has been using crisis management tools and strategies in their news articles per the theoretical framework of this study. Per the support of information from our completed interview, it was nothing KI was aware of, but something that they unconsciously made use of.

Full textHur man presenterar sökresultat har blivit allt viktigare i och med dagens av smarttelefoner. Det här arbetet undersökte vad som gör sökresultatssidor effektiva när man använder en smarttelefon. I arbetet utfördes en experimentell studie av Karolinska Institutets söklösning. Tre olika versioner av Karolinska Institutets smarttelefonsgränssnitt utvecklades genom att undersöka potentiella \emph{features} (funktioner, egenskaper) som förbättrar effektiviteten. De olika utvecklade versionerna jämfördes mot det original som Karolinska Institutet använder idag. Detta gjordes genom experiment med studenter från Karolinska Institutet. De kvantitativa resultaten kunde inte visa på någon statistisk signifikant effektivitetsförbättring. De kvalitativa resultaten pekade på att kategorisering och summeringstexter är föredragna features i ett sökgränssnitt i smarttelefonen.

Full textToday, Sweden has a higher digitization degree than many other countries. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, many organizations have shifted their work from offices to teleworking by using digital tools. This adjustment is a new phenomenon for many individuals who have had to adapt to new working conditions. Therefore, it is of interest to study how a Swedish organization, Karolinska Institutet in this case, has undergone a transition to teleworking. The change has caused several challenges that have affected the motivation of employees. To understand how the employees' experience regarding their motivation has been affected and what actions have been taken to maintain the motivation, the purpose of the study is to investigate how that adaptation, with the help of digital tools, affected the motivation of administrative staff at Karolinska Institutet. The questions that the study intends to answer are: "How have KI's administrative employees experienced that motivation was affected during teleworking, and how do administrative managers take actions to maintain the motivation of employees?". To answer these research questions, a qualitative research approach has been applied where nine interviews have been conducted at two departments within KI. The interview data has mainly been analyzed with the help of the guidelines that fall within the theoretical framework of sensemaking. The results show that it is difficult to answer how motivation is experienced because motivation is individual and the motivational factors differ from one person to another. Furthermore, the results show that the challenges that emerged were social, physiological and communicative challenges. The administrative managers have taken measures such as technical equipment for all employees, actively involving employees in digital events, and continuous individual meetings with employees. These measures have received positive feedback and constructive criticism to make sense for all individuals.

Full textSyfte och frågeställningar Huvudsyftet med denna studie var att undersöka de longitudinella effekter på prestation i cykling med hjälp av ett polariserat och periodiserat träningsupplägg som var väl övervakat och kontrollerat. Det andra syftet var att undersöka effekten av att använda hyperoxi. De frågeställningar som hjälpte att besvara syftet var: (1) Hur förändras prestationen efter en sex veckors träningsintervention? (2) Hur anpassar sig försökspersonerna till träningsschemat över tid? (3) Hur förändras prestationen inom grupperna? Metod 19 manliga och kvinnliga cyklister deltog i studien (13 manliga och 6 kvinnliga), 12 fullföljde hela studien (8 manliga och 4 kvinnliga). Karaktäristiken för de 12 försökspersonerna var: ålder (år) 33.6 ± 6.8, längd (cm) 177 ± 9.1, vikt (kg) 73.4 ± 8.8. Försökspersonerna delades in i hyperoxi (HOT) (n = 6) och normoxi (NOT) (n = 6), studien var dubbelblind. Under sex veckor följde försökspersonerna en kontrollerad polariserad periodisering som inkluderade 15 högintensiva intervallträningspass (HIIT) (3 x 8 min, 3 x 8 + 4 min, 4 x 8 min & 4 x 4 min) på högsta genomförbara intensitet (isoeffort) på cykelergometer. Doseringen av syre administrerades intermittent genom Oxelerate-enheten. Ett 20 min all-out test utfördes som för- och eftertest. Resultat Hela gruppen (n = 12) ökade signifikant på prestationstestet (W) med 6.4 % (P = 0.002). Den relativa effekten (W/kg) ökade signifikant med 8.2% (P = 0.0011). HOT (n = 6) ökade signifikant på prestationstestet med 8.3% (P = 0.028) och den relativa effekten ökade med 9.4% (P = 0.011). Hela gruppen (n = 12) ökade signifikant i VO2medel under prestationstestet med 4.1 % (P = 0.03) och i det relativa värdet med 5.4 % (P = 0.01). Hela gruppen hade också en signifikant ökning av VO2peak med 3.7 % (P = 0.04). En mycket stark korrelation hittades mellan träningspassdata och prestationstestet. Slutsats Träningsupplägget är gynnsamt för ökning av prestation och VO2peak i cykling. Användning av hyperoxi under träningsupplägget ökar prestationen.
