Full textDespite the fact that women become more and more present in the private sector they still are heavily underrepresented in top positions. The cause has been debated and several explanations have been discussed. Although, many women have succeeded to reach top positions by making some more or less deliberate decisions that might have been decisive for their careers.
The main purpose of this study is to analyse what women who aim for a successful career should be aware of regarding their choices of education and profession. Moreover, the importance of different circumstances for the development of women’s career opportunities has been inquired into. The study is based on interviews with nine female managing directors.
The study is based on qualitative data in order to depict the experiences of these successful women. Their depictions have made it possible to apprehend what women who aim at a career should be aware of and bear in mind. The personal interviews have been analysed towards a number of theories.
The outcome shows that a degree from a School of Economics might give good opportunities in a future career. However, to have specific goals regarding one’s education or one’s career has shown not to be necessary. It is of great importance to choose a good manager who encourages the employees and gives them the opportunity to develop in their profession. The conclusion can be drawn that the informal networks are significant to advance in the professional life. Further, it is essential to find a balance between one’s professional and private life and for those with a family, it is required that the spouse does his part of the household duties. To make a successful career it is favourable to have the following qualities: To be persistent, purposeful and open for changes. According to this study, women have a tendency to demand too much of themselves. On the other hand, the demand from others does not seem to be higher on women than on men. Finally, it is highly important to put trust in oneself and to have the courage to take risks and one of the main conditions to develop and make a career is to get on well at work.

Full textStudy's problem area is that the number of homeless people in Sweden growths, thereby constituting a distinct social problem and it requires responsibility. Homelessness is a complex fact caused by unemployment, rising housing costs and deterioration in the welfare system. The purpose of this study is to investigate the homeless experiences of his life and career development, in order to get a better understanding of the group's perceived opportunities from selected theories and previous research. The study's questions are: How did these people homeless? How do the homeless current life situation like? How do the homeless their career prospects? I have chosen to use qualitative methods in the study to get answers to interview questions. I have interviewed six homeless in Skåne, in the areas around Malmö and Lund. I use parts of Bourdieu's theories and Hodkinson and Sparkes Career Ship Theory. Bourdieu's theories can be separated into three main concepts: field, capital and habitus. Hodkinson and Sparkes Career Ship Theory is based on sociological and psychological starting points based on theoretical concepts from Bourdieu's theories of habitus, capital and field. The main results show that the informants became homeless because they went through a breaking point as they had quit their former jobs. It resulted also that alcohol abuse and mental illness in the form of depression affected their change to homelessness. The main result also shows that homeless thoughts about the career opportunities of study and work is relatively low.

Full textIn the absence of motivation, it becomes more difficult to achieve goals or to accomplish something with pleasure. Career development is an important part to motivate employees in audit firms. Since many new graduates choose to apply to Big4 where career development is clearly characterized by up-or-out, it is interesting to investigate what characterizes career development at the smaller audit firms. The purpose is to contribute to the understanding of career development as well as the motivational factors that influence the audit associates to career development at smaller firms. To fulfill the purpose of the study, a qualitative research method has been used in form of semi-structured interviews with audit associates. Nine interviews were implemented: four personal and five digital interviews. Motivational factors and career development have been studied based on central concepts and three motivational theories. The results of this study show that audit associates tend to think about motivational factors rather than hygiene factors when asked what motivates them. It is the motivational factors that are directly motivating in the work at the accounting firms. The most important motivating factor discovered in the study was responsibility. One conclusion in this study is that both the motivational factors and career development are perceived differently from individual to individual. Career development opportunities at the smaller firms are not as great as the larger firms. However, career development does not only mean how to become an authorized auditor or partner at the firm but can also mean developing on a personal level.

Full textThe non-commissioned officer (NCO) is the competence bearer in the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) and manages activities in all SAF tasks. In order to be a competence bearer the NCO has to develop deep knowledge within his or hers field of expertise. The SAF has, during the last 40 years, implemented a large number of changes in its command system. The latest change made in 2008, when the NCOs Corps was reinstated, has not been fully implemented which has led to difficulties for an NCO to acquire opportunities to develop the abilities required and proficiency needed to be a viable competence bearer. The SAF and the army have realized that the implementation process has stalled and therefore have issued new guidelines to restart the process, of which the latest was issued in 2019. The study’s aim was to acquire knowledge about the prerequisites, hindrances, possibilities and expectations regarding acquirement of competence for NCOs in two strategical important units, Lv6 and P18. The study’s data was collected from active NCOs serving in the two units. During the execution of the study, prerequisites in the form of old structures emerged that, in spite of the changes in the command system, still lives on and is a hindrance to the NCOs acquisition of skills. An example is the old command system not being dismantled in conjunction with the implementation of the new system. Another example is that today’s NCOs lack incentives for the acquirement of deeper knowledge. They still possess a strong will to enhance themselves, even when they lack formal requirements. The expectations of the SAF guidelines are high, since they highlight what needs to be addressed at different levels for the NCOs acquisition of skills to be successful. The study’s primary conclusion is that the transition to the new command system must be completed to allow the NCOs the opportunity to develop their skillsets to the required levels that the guidelines stipulate and the organization needs to evolve and manage its activities.
