Full textThe purpose of this study is to explore the application of the narrative method The Tree of Life as a career guidance instrument and to investigate the career counselling contexts in which the method could be most usable. As research strategy, we have chosen to perform a case study without intervention with four individual interviews as data collection method. The results show that the interviewees share common features regarding the fundamental purpose and the evaluation of the method The Tree of Life. They argue that the method helps to strengthen individuals’ belief in their own abilities. Through better self-knowledge individuals may perceive their life as more meaningful and they may get more opportunities to explore themselves and their dreams. The method itself is described as both philosophical and creative, which means that it cannot be applied automatically by all the counsellors and within every kind of target groups. The study shows that the method’s potential is better exploited when the counsellor succeeds in creating the appropriate sense of safeness within the group so that the participants can fully share the stories of their lives and get feedback from the others. According to the collected data, the method is considered to have its greatest potential for development in the work with children, who on the other hand have been its peculiar target group, since the method was developed in 2005. Nevertheless, the interviewees could see the method as applicable also within other target groups. They have referred in particular to young people who are neither in education nor in employment, to young people who live in a difficult family background, to unaccompanied refugee children, to newly arrived immigrants, and to youth who for various reasons are not able to fulfil their course of education.

Full textUndersökningen syftar till att belysa hur en individ i en rehabiliteringsprocess kan gynnas av karriärvägledning. Forskningsfrågorna som ställts har gällt vilket inslag av karriärvägledning som ingår i den aktuella stressrehabiliteringen, vilka behov som av karriärvägledning som finns samt vilken funktion karriärvägledning kan fylla inom en arbetslivsinriktad stressrehabiliteringsverksamhet. För undersökningen valdes en kvalitativ forskningsmetod med forskningsfrågorna som grund. Resultatet av de öppna intervjufrågorna visade att det inte gavs karriärvägledning av någon anställd person inom stressrehabiliteringen, men att det var något som önskades. Inslag av karrärvägledning gavs begränsat av Arbetsförmedlingen och resultaten visade att det fanns behov av karriärvägledning samt att vägledning kan fylla en funktion inom arbetslivsinriktad stressrehabilitering. Antagandet att karriärvägledning inte fanns representerad inom den valda stressrehabiliteringsverksamheten, att det fanns behov av sådan samt att karriärvägledning kan fylla en funktion visade sig stämma.
The survey aims to highlight how an individual in a rehabilitation process can benefit from career guidance. Research questions have been raised as part of career guidance at the current stress rehabilitation, the needs of career guidance available, and what function career guidance can play in vocational stress rehabilitation work. For the research one qualitative research method was choosen with the research questions as a base. The result of the open interview questions revealed that there were no career guidance available in form of any person employed in the stress rehabilitation, but that it was preferred. Elements of career guidance was limited by Employment Service and the results showed that there is a need for career guidance and that guidance can play a role in vocational stress rehabilitation . The assumption that career guidance was not represented in the chosen stress rehabilitation activities, the existence of such needs and that vocational career guidance can play a role turned out to be true.

Full textMany people who suffer from fatigue syndrome (UMS) experience a reduced cognitive ability that becomes a turning point, leading to a crossroad that requires a well-functioning action plan for the future. In this study, interviews with people that are or have been diagnosed with UMS have shared their opinions regarding career guidance, whether career guidance is needed, and what type of guidance they perceive as needed. The results from the qualitative interviews were analyzed drawing on careership theory and constructivist theory, showing that people with UMS are in need of a life change that requires new insight, perspective and foresight for a successful return to work and a healthy way of relating to work and accomplishment. Furthermore, the study shows that there is a need for a holistic approach where the individual's own life story is put at the center, since no medications or ready-made solutions that suit everyone exist. Career management skills and lifelong learning are central parts of this study and with an expertise within this area, a career counsellor’s contribution, i.e. career guidance, can be of great benefit to people with UMS.

På grund av den konkurrens som idag råder på arbetsmarknaden om kvalificerad arbetskraft ser företaget Manpower ett behov av att kommunicera med individer mitt i karriären. Därför har en Internetbaserad karriärguide nyligen implementerats, men idag finns endast enklare funktioner att tillgå. För att kunna attrahera kvalificerad arbetskraft behövs djupare förståelse erhållas för hur de tänker kring ämnet karriär, karriärvägledning och karriärvägledning på Internet.
Syfte:
Uppsatsen syfte är att ge riktlinjer för Manpowers Internetbaserade karriärguide. Ett strategiskt tänkande för karriärguiden presenteras samt riktlinjer för funktioner och utformning.
Metod:
Utifrån insamlad sekundärdata om Career Management och Internetmarknadsföring utformades en intervjuguide som låg till grund för genomförandet av undersökningen. 15 kvalitativa intervjuer med individer mitt i karriären utfördes. Resultatet av intervjuerna tillsammans med sekundärdata låg till grund för utformandet av karriärguidens riktlinjer.
Riktlinjer:
Karriärguiden ska vara personlig och interaktion ska stå i centrum. Ett sätt för besökare att interagera med varandra är genom forum. Karriärguiden bör präglas av ett icke-elitistiskt tänkande genom att ge råd gällande hur det är möjligt att få ihop alla delar av livspusslet och därmed inte endast fokusera på faktorer som lön och status. Individer med intressanta karriärer kan lyftas fram och särskilt kvinnor bör få plats på guiden, det kan ske genom till exempel personporträtt. Karriärguiden måste vara lättnavigerad och uppdateras regelbundet för att fortsätta vara levande.

Full textSelf-employment is an employment form that is growing rapidly. In recent years, reports and debate articles are coming up about new forms of organizing work-life and possible consequences of self- employment in terms of regulations and employment security. Self-employed means people who perform work on assignments and not have a company themselves. Instead, they are employed by a self-employment company which is responsible for billing against the customer / client. Based on these changes, it is interesting to see what consequences it has for the individual and which skills are required in the role of the employee in order to handle new expectations and demands. In the long run, it is also interesting to see which support jobseekers can get in developing new skills in a labor market, which involves shifting from job security to employability and if counsellors and advisors in the labor market sector should or even can recommend self-employment as an option regardless of the job applicant's skills. This study is based on an individual perspective and is primarily addressed to counsellors in employment service and adult education, as well as advisors and career coaches within the job security councils - Trygghetsråden. The hope is that the study should be able to assist in the work of guiding and as a piece of puzzle for individuals' future career decisions. The study link to the Planned Happenstance theory. The choice of theory has been based on the fact that the theory is well in line with the shift in the labour market and the new gig economy, where the individual is expected to take full responsibility for his / her own development, claiming initiative and being self-governing. For the study a qualitative method has been applied. Seven people have been selected, they represent organizations in different industries, different types of organizations and have different roles. Commonly, they are organizations that encourage, support or guide individuals in a career-counselling process. The interviewees work in the self-employment company Frilans Finans, The labour union Unionen, the job security councils TRR (outplacement and job security services for private companies and employees), TSN (The Job Security Foundation, job security services for government employees) and TRS, Arbetsförmedlingen (The Swedish Public Employment Service) and Verto Konsult AB. The results in the study show that it is relatively unusual for unemployed to use self-employment as a platform for entering the labour market. The specific skills required are primarily independent, driven, like sales, flexible, dare to take risks, relation competencies and specialist skills. Several of these skills are consistent with the skills that the career theory Planned Happenstance means are important. Further, the study shows that career counsellors should argue that people who consider self- employment have a clear business idea and that they have done a proper market research of the service or product to sell, as well as the financial conditions. Support through training efforts to increase digital skills and courses in laws and agreements is also something that respondents highlight, as well as counselling at the start, not just before the start-up. Access to networks and being able to chat with others are also suggestions for support efforts.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to identify significant differences between the counseling centers at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Umeå University. Another main objective is to provide suggestions on how study and career counselors can develop their counseling centers on the basis of the differences identified. This study is a comparative field study with qualitative interviews. The informants are six study and career counselors that provide a picture of how the counseling centers are organized. They talk about their jobs and working practices as well as the need to develop their organizations. They also point out their counseling skills. Counseling methods proven effective internationally, counseling traditions influencing the practice of counseling today and the differences between the Study and Career Counseling Program in Sweden and USA are the theoretical points from where we take our support. The results show that there are in fact big differences. The differences considered to be of most importance is that Umeå University has a well-developed online counseling (e- counseling) and drop-in counseling but has no career counseling available to all students. University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is devoid of all face to face e-counseling and drop-in counseling but adds a strong focus on career counseling. The conclusion is that both counseling centers can develop its counseling by learning from these differences through an exchange of counseling skills.

Full textThe purpose of our study was to investigate the possible differences and similarities in the skills that study and career counselors and coaches own and use in their work. Based on our purpose, we formulated the following three research questions; What skills does the interviewed study and career counselors have experience off in their professional practices? What skills does the interviewed coaches have experience off in their professional practices? And what are the differences and similarities between the two occupations in terms of competence and competence use. To answer our research questions, we chose to conduct eight qualitative interviews with four study and career counselors and four coaches, all working in the field of study and / or work. In order to analyze our results, we took the help of EU bodies, Cedefop's competence descriptions of the supervisor's duties, and Kerstin Keen's competence description and Knud Illeri's extended competence description. The results show that the study and career counselors highlight five focus areas which are; Methods and Theories, Empathy, Accepting People's Differences and Different Conditions, Motivation and Hope, and Safety, regarding the skills they possess and use. The coaches also highlight five focus areas in their interviews, which are; Way of working and methods with the client, Help the client to see their successes or shortcomings, That the client accomplishes something, The ability be uncomfortable, and Adaptations, regarding the skills they possess and use. The results also showed that the study and career counselors in our study have a greater focus on methods and theories than our interviewed coaches had. The coaches, on the other hand, had a great focus on the ability to be uncomfortable, honest and to work to challenge the clients in different ways, which was not as clear in the case of the study and career counselors. The result also showed similarities such as the fact that both professional roles work empathically and that they work with the ability to motivate the clients into action. The results of our study can not be perceived as general for all student counselors or coaches, but can help us gain insight into the skills that both professors possess and use in their work with clients in this area.

Full textLack of participation in the open labor market is highly prevalent for people with mental illness. Vocational rehabilitation through Supported employment (SE) has shown to be an effective approach to improve employment outcomes. Research generally centres upon the effectiveness of the method. This study focuses on the support from the SE-coach and the aim is to investigate the meaning of this support to the participants. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three participants and a group interview with three coaches. The emotional, tailored and instrumental supports were pointed out as being helpful. They interact and lead to empowerment for two of the participants who are now in work practice. They show satisfaction with their occupational situation and with being part of a social context. The participants express improvement in psychiatric symptoms, global functioning and self-esteem. The findings of this study highlight the importance of the emotional support from the SE-coach, and stress the ability of the coach to balance the amount of support given. This is crucial in order to facilitate the empowerment of the participants.
