Abstract:
Background: Schkuhria pinnata L., is an antimalarial plant that is highly threatened by the destructive harvesting methods and its collection largely relies on wild sources, that are also exposed to over-exploitation and habitat destruction. Aim of the study: The study aimed at figuring out where S. pinnata grows best and what its growth requirements are; in order to promote the informed cultivation practices and soil selection as a viable alternative to wild harvesting. The agronomical soil nutrient status of S. pinnata, and how it relates to the agro-morphological traits and plant ionome, clues on fertiliser formulations for soils where S. pinnata does not shrive were reported. Methods: A randomised complete block design was employed in agronomical experimental plots in different agro-ecological zones that host Bushenyi, Ntungamo and Kasese districts. Standard procedures for soil and plant analysis were used to analyse soil physicochemical and plant ionome parameters while agro-morphological traits were physically evaluated. Results: Results demonstrated that soil physicochemical characteristics differed significantly across the study sites (p ≤.05). S. pinnata significantly performed better in slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.87-7.25) in Kasese than in other sites. S. pinnata harvested from Kasese had the largest total leaf area (mean = 31.43 ± 2.41cm2) and the highest plant biomass (mean = 7.65 ± 0.64 g). Conclusion: The study concluded that S. pinnata grew best in slightly acidic to neutral, sandy loam, non-saline soils of Kasese in Western Medium-High Farmland

Abstract:
This study examines the aesthetics of three Kasena traditional prayers performed in devotion to Kukula, a divinity revered by the Kasena of the Upper East Region of Ghana. These prayers are performed orally and have not received any literary study in Kasem; this study is therefore aimed at filling this gap by looking at the aesthetics in this prayers. Four different prayers were recorded and transcribed by the researcher; these prayers were collected from Kayᴐrᴐ, a village in the Kasena Nankana West District in the Upper East Region of Ghana. We define these prayer texts as being part of Kasem oral literature. The literary theory of structuralism is adopted for this study. The instruments I used in collecting the information for this study included, voice recorder, video recorder, while the researcher used active participatory method of observation and data elicitation in the data collection. The analysis reveals that the officiant in their performances of these prayers use native poetic devices such as; proverbs, rhetorical questions, metaphor, personification, oxymoron, synecdoche, symbolism, imagery and repetitions of varying degrees. They also use allusions, alliteration and assonance. The study of these prayers reveals that these performers have a mastery of many artistic devices native to Kasem. In conclusion the study clearly shows that even though the officiants of these traditional prayers are merely performing religious activities, they use literary language during their compositions, thus, making Kasena traditional prayer texts artistic compositions.

Abstract:
AbstractThomas Jefferson coined the image of the academical village for the university-campus. Whereupon the word village can be translated into the German expression ›Dorf‹ (village) as well as ›Gemeinde‹ (community). Thus the place and people, who enliven their surroundings, are an integral part of the campus. This metaphor gathers the cultural imprint of the campus as an ideal environment for learning as well as its incorporated imaginations. This article follows the question, if the buildings of a university can be seen as a result of the social structures of the academical village. Perhaps they were intended from the beginning on as a production of these social configurations. Therefore this paper wants to inquire specifically into the expressiveness of architecture in the specific case of the early Saarbrücken campus planning of the Universität des Saarlandes. The field of tension university shall be approached as a topic between representative institution and architectural manifestation.

Abstract:
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in North Kivu in August 2018. By June 2019, the outbreak had spread to 26 health zones in northeastern DRC, causing >2,000 reported cases and >1,000 deaths. On June 10, 2019, three members of a Congolese family with EVD-like symptoms traveled to western Uganda’s Kasese District to seek medical care. Shortly thereafter, the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Surveillance and Laboratory Program (VHF program) at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) confirmed that all three patients had EVD. The Ugandan Ministry of Health declared an outbreak of EVD in Uganda’s Kasese District, notified the World Health Organization, and initiated a rapid response to contain the outbreak. As part of this response, UVRI and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with the support of Uganda’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center, the Kasese District Health Team, the Superintendent of Bwera General Hospital, the United States Department of Defense’s Makerere University Walter Reed Project, and the United States Mission to Kampala’s Global Health Security Technical Working Group, jointly established an Ebola Field Laboratory in Kasese District at Bwera General Hospital, proximal to an Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU). The laboratory consisted of a rapid containment kit for viral inactivation of patient specimens and a GeneXpert Instrument for performing Xpert Ebola assays. Laboratory staff tested 76 specimens from alert and suspect cases of EVD; the majority were admitted to the ETU (89.3%) and reported recent travel to the DRC (58.9%). Although no EVD cases were detected by the field laboratory, it played an important role in patient management and epidemiological surveillance by providing diagnostic results in <3 hours. The integration of the field laboratory into Uganda’s National VHF Program also enabled patient specimens to be referred to Entebbe for confirmatory EBOV testing and testing for other hemorrhagic fever viruses that circulate in Uganda.

Abstract:

With majority of the world’s poor living in rural areas and engaging in agriculture governments and NGOs have taken measures to promote agricultural activities so as to alleviate poverty. Uganda’s Poverty Eradication Action Plan (PEAP) which serves as the government’s main development intervention to reduce poverty acknowledges agriculture as one of the strategies aimed to increase income levels of the poor. Provisions of agricultural advisory services in addition to establishment of agricultural research centers amongst others; are some of the initiatives put in place by the government. However in spite of the all these efforts, there is concern about the growing non-agricultural informal activities as alternative sources of income in Uganda, a country with high agricultural potential. It is in this context therefore, that this research study seeks to find out why individuals and rural households in Kasenge Parish, Mukono district engage in small scale stone extraction. This study also seeks to identify the constraints and the vulnerabilities associated with small scale quarrying activities and further assess the effects of laws, policies and institutions in enhancing or hindering these activities. This research study also endeavors to explore the different livelihood outcomes realized by the stone workers and Kasenge parish as a result of stone quarrying activities. The study relies on information collected qualitatively through individual and group interviews coupled with personal observations in addition to documented data from published and unpublished articles. Based on the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach and the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, findings revealed that small scale stone quarrying was both a poverty and market driven activity; that was enhanced by political stability and rural-urban population increase. Informal stone extraction however, was prone to human and economic shocks that affect the workers, quarrying activities and the outcomes as well. The findings further showed that small scale quarrying activities are not affected by the law that governs mineral extraction. In fact the Mineral Policy enhances small scale mining for national, socio-economic development. However, women at Kasenge are constrained by gender roles and informal regulations. The livelihood outcomes realized were both tangible and non-tangible to the workers and the Kasenge community. In view of this, the study recommends official recognition of small scale quarrying so as to enhance sustainable development in harvesting of a non-renewable natural resource. Key words: Small Scale Mineral Extraction, Sustainable Livelihoods

Liberski-Bagnoud, Danouta. "Les dieux du territoire : Unité et morcellement de l'espace en pays Kasena (Burkina Faso)." Paris, EPHE, 1991. http://www.theses.fr/1991EPHE5019.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, the author analyzes how a West African society, the Kasena, transforms a geographic space into a territory. What are the notions, institutions, myths, ritual practices and daily behaviour through which the Kasena build up their relationship to ground and space? The study of the category of divinities called tangwam by Kasena and "skin of the earth" by their neighbours, fives the major axis of the work. The word tangwam means not only the sacred spot where periodically men renew a pact with the ground divinities but also the spot where symbolically all the members of an agnatic group (lineage) "breathe" and the "space of breath" for two lineages bonded by a commune residence in a same part of the village. One could say that these "skins of the earth" are alike the "territory-gods" about which S. Czarnowski, speaking of Greek and Roman civilizations, writes that "they are nothing but the territory itself" (1932). The work, divided in 10 chapters, includes an introduction on the Kasena as ethnic group and two parts, headed "space and kinship" and "earth and chieftainry". In the first part, the author deals with the question of territorial bonds, taking as point of view the internal organization of social groups dwelling in a same portion of land. The second part discusses the same question but, this time, through an examination of the territorial system

Abstract:
The Kasena in northern Ghana first encountered Christian missionaries in 1906 and so began to hear about We choha (God's way). For 50 years, the Roman Catholic Church functioned alone among the Kasena. Over this time most Kasena perceived We choha to be the "white man's religion" and largely irrelevant. Of those who became Christians many appeared to live a dichotomous life. They attended church on Sundays, requesting prayer and Mass be said for their crises and problems, but also sought to resolve issues through divination and traditional means which the church had condemned. From the 1950s, Kasena began to change their perception and acceptance of We choha. This period is also marked by the entry of new churches into the Kasena homeland, exposure to new aspects of the Christian message and increased Kasena migration to the south of Ghana. This study attempts to understand from the Kasena their reasons for accepting We choha and to discover in what ways they perceive it as relevant to their world and in the context of their family and daily life. The study initially identifies the historic, environmental and socio-political context of the Kasena. It explores Kasena organisation of social and family life, and the way they seek to live in their environment, to resolve some of their problems and clarify issues, with a view to gaining insight into their ideas and beliefs about life and the transcendental realm. There follows a study of Kasena stories of conversion, the establishment of churches through archival and literary sources and 185 unstructured, open-ended interviews with men and women in different churches and communities.

Brown, Lyndsay. "From West Street to Dr Pixley KaSeme Street: How contemporary racialised subjectivities are (re)produced in the city of Durban." Thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/184.

Full text
Abstract:
From West Street to Dr Pixley kaSeme Street:1 How contemporary racialised subjectivities are (re)p roduced in the city of Durban This thesis is part of the larger mission to understand and challenge the ongoing reproduction of race. The focus of this particular project is on how race is perpetuated through the continuing construction of our racialised subjectivities in/through place. This idea is broadly epitomised by the idea that „who we are is where we are? (Dixon and Durrheim, 2000) and the recognition that this process is highly racialised. This emphasis locates this project squarely within the social psychology of race, place and identity. To collect data that could facilitate access to racialised place-identity constructions I used a mobile methodology wherein black and white city government officials (who had grown up in Durban) took me on a walking and/or driving tour of the city of Durban talking with me about the racial transformation of this city from our childhood (in apartheid times) to the present (post-apartheid) city. These conversations were digitally recorded and transcribed for analysis. I also recorded various activities that took place during the tour and made extensive pre-tour and post-tour notes. All of this material was utilised analytically. Initially I analysed the discursive practices which we (the participants) engaged in as we constructed the racialised city historically and contemporaneously and reflected on the attendant subjectivities of blackness and whiteness invoked by this particular place-identity talk. When it became apparent that there was more to the production of race on the tours than that which was produced by our implaced talk my analysis progressed to an examination of other practices which produced race on the tours, namely, our material/embodied interactive practices. Through paying close analytic attention to our interaction on the tours it became evident that key practices which produced race on the tours – the spatial, discursive and embodied practices – were inextricably connected to each other in a „trialectical? (tri-constitutional) relationship. I argue that we need to analyse this trialectical relationship further because of the ways in which it facilitates the creation of racial sticking points which obfuscate racial transformation in South Africa.
