If the number of Europeans (Belgians, Greeks and Italians) living in Katanga has considerably decreased during the post-colonial period, they represent today the most powerful entrepreneurial group of the local economy. Once considered the troubles they came across since independence, why did they remain in the Congo? How did they develop their business in a declining economy, in process of marginalization, and in a patrimonial political structure, which proves to be more and more unstable? Finally, what is their place and role in Congolese society? These are the three questions this thesis tries to give an answer. Through the chapters, it studies the migration of expatriates in Africa, their relationship with Congolese society, the dynamics of their community, their role in the two most important sectors of Katanga, and the way they interact with the agents of the State. For this purpose, it rests upon a fieldwork research led between 2003 and 2004.

Faucon, Michel-Pierre.

Full textIn the Katanga province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), the anthropogenic pressure is exerted on the Miombo woodland (MW) with the expansion of the agricultural lands and the increased demand for charcoal, due to the demographic growth. The restorationof agricultural and forest fallows has become essential to reverse this decline and sustainably manage the degraded MW. The main objective of this thesis was to study the development of seedlings and the potential of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the MW of UpperKatanga, DRC. Its specific objectives were to: (i) assess the development and mycorrhizalstatus of MW species, with respect to their successional status (early (ES) or late (LS) tree species); (ii) determine the arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum potential (AMIP) in degradedMW; and (iii) describe the diversity and community structure of AMF associated with amultipurpose forest tree (Pterocarpus tinctorius Welw also named Mninga maji in Swahili,Mukula in Bemba).First, the development of the seedlings was evaluated, for two pioneer tree species(Combretum collinum and P. tinctorius) and six late species (Brachystegia boehmii, B.longifolia, B. spiciformis, B. wangermeana, Julbernardia globiflora and J. paniculata), 1, 2and 4 years after planting. Then, the AMIP was estimated in degraded MW by baitingCrotalaria juncea seedlings. The relationship between AMIP and vegetation indix wase stablished with Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM) and linear regressions. Finally, the diversity and the structure of the AMF community in the roots of P. tinctorius were characterized in the agricultural and forest fallow of three sites, by amplification, cloning of the 28S gene of the large subunit (LSU) of the ribosomal DNA and Sanger sequencing. The results showed that the early successional tree species, ES (Chipya) had early growthand were 3 to 40 times more productive than to LS (tree species characteristic of MW). ESspecies were colonized by AMF, whereas LS species were colonized by ectomycorrhizal fungi. In degraded MW, the density of some trees had a positive influence on AMIP,particularly woody legumes acting synergistically with the abundance of annual grasses.Woody legumes were more colonized and would act as AMF plant refuges. Molecular diversity of 30 operational taxonomic units (UTOs) of AMF was associated with P. tinctorius (one of the mycotrophic woody legumes), in the agricultural and forest fallows of three sites studied. The community richness and structure of the AMF were driven by the density ofwoody species colonized by AMF evenly distributed in plant species. The AMF communitywas dominated by species of the genera Rhizophagus and Sclerocystis, and were strongly associated with some chemical properties of the soil (pH, acidity, total aluminium and totaliron) and the density of some trees. Thus, the results highlight a variability of growth and biomass depending on the successional status (ecological groups). Also, the AMIP and the AMF communities were mainly driven by tree density and soil properties. We suggest there forestation of degraded MW with the native species (P. tinctorius, B. spiciformis and C.collinum) in mono-specific plantations or under agroforestry management with food crops.

Full textJune 25, 2014, Germain Katanga became the first person to be convicted and sentenced by the International Criminal Court. As his case continued to be cloaked in silence, this congolese villager from the remote province of Ituri became a figure in the early history of a rising institution. Through a deconstruction of each stage of the proceedings against Katanga for war crimes and crimes against humanity at the ICC, this work attempts to understand how an institution built to prosecute the masterminds and those most responsible for the gravest crimes and atrocities targeted a 24-year-old Okapi hunter who never before heard of “The Hague”.Lasking social control, unable to play the role for which it was designed more than ten years ago, the ICC has systematically blamed the States for its numerous failures. The reality is more complex, and this research reveals that the institution has a structural incapacity to act against the interests of the state order, and a fortiori against the dominants of the order, therefore rendering obsolete any of its cosmopolitan pretentions. Following from a description of the ICC “from the inside”, based on the author's experience at the office of the Prosecutor and at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this work assesses the Court through a Hobbesian lens. Relying on field work in Congo and the Central Africa Republic, more than a hundred interviews and a novel analysis of Hobbes Leviathan this work takes a bottom-up approach, starting from the smallest scale - from what was considered a minor case – and ultimately questioning the institution as a whole

Full textBased on the study of daily interactions between Katangese and Kasaians, in the aftermath of the mass violence committed against the non-native Kasaians in the early 1990s, the dissertation shows that in their face-to-face interactions (Goffman), Katangese and Kasaians used practices of coexistence based on avoidance, silence, and self-censorship. Silence on the past violence and on political topics that can be interpreted with regard to the conflict between the two communities has indeed became an interactional norm of peaceful coexistence, unlike the injunction of NGOs specialized in the 'bottom-up' pacification to set up a dialogue that is deemed to foster a mutual understanding. The dissertation also shows that specific political or socio-economic contexts lead to 'crisis situations' (Dobry; Vidal). These crisis situations result in the polarization of collective identities: Katangese and Kasaians are viewed only by their ethno-regional origins. The expectations about interaction situations are made more difficult, because of the “structural uncertainty” that characterizes 'crisis situations'; and the routine practices of coexistence based on self-censorship and avoidance tend to disappear. From these findings, the dissertation questions the moral injunctions in favor of reconciliation and dialogue, which are at the heart of the theories and practices of 'bottom-up' pacification, and even the eventuality of a “bottom-up” reconciliation spreading step by step a 'culture of peace', which would eventually permeate society as a whole

Full textThe task to this thesis has been to create an application, Katana-databas 1.0, for analysing c-code. The generated output gets stored in a data structure which content in the end of the program run gets written in a textfile which gets used by Katana. It's a tool for reverse engineering, developed by Johan Kraft at Mälardalens institute.
Katana-databas has got the following limitations. (1) It can only handle preprocessed files, meaning it doesn't contain any rows beginning with "#". (2) Only complete files can be handled. (3) No references to unknown functions or variables are allowed. (4) A further limitation is that the application can't handle any ADT's. It can only handle primitive types. (5) Finally the application is only written for pure c-code, and thus doesn't handle code written C++.
The task has been solved by creating an automatically generated lexer with Flex and Bison rules in Visual Studio. There after a limited parser has been developed which purpose is to process the lexemes which the lexer generates.
The underlying causes for the thesis is to replace Understand with Katana-databas. Katana has this far used the database in Understand, but it contains closed source code. What is seeked is open source code, which Katana-databas is based on.

Full textThis thesis theme is the techniques of acquisition and processing of iron in the production of Japanese words, aperiod from the 9th to the end of the 16th century. A preliminary part presents the evolution of iron techniquesto date. The types of ores (iron sand) are then discussed with their acquisition end extraction techniques. Theprocessing methods with the reduction techniques are also studied. The research of the archaeological sitessheds light on two major types of furnace in the archipelago: a semi-buried shaft furnace and a rectangular boxshape furnace. This last one leads to the development, in the early 17th century, of the traditional Japanesefurnace, the tatara. In addition, the development of forging techniques in the archipelago was prior to the reduction techniques. Therefore, from the 9th century, the technology of the Japanese forge had already reached a high level, havingdeveloped in addition to the basic forge techniques, the techniques of refining, carburizing and clustering(oroshigane), allowing the smith to not only be dependent on the iron production of the reduction furnace.Consequently, a large part of the blade production in this period might have relied on that technique. Thisrecycling helps to explain the disappearance of a large number of blades, associated to sword hunts in the late16th century, which allow distinguishing the class of warriors, the samurai, carrying a weapon which is, fromthe early 17th century, reserved to them

Observations, theoretical models, and a numerical model (ADCIRC) are used to investigate the effects of tides, waves, bay bathymetry, and changing inlet geometry on the hydrodynamics of the multiple-inlet Katama system, Martha's Vineyard, MA. Momentum fluxes from breaking waves drive water into the inlet, nearly stopping the 2 m/s ebb currents during a hurricane. The evolving morphology of Katama Inlet has a dominant effect on tidal distortion and bay circulation. As Katama inlet lengthened, narrowed, and shoaled between 2011 and 2014, the relative effects of friction (observed and simulated) increased greatly, resulting in reduced circulation energy, an increase in the M6 tidal constituent, and changes in velocity asymmetries that are consistent with an evolution from flood to ebb dominance. The effects of changing inlet parameters (e.g., inlet geometry, bay bathymetry, friction, tidal forcing) are quantified via a lumped element model that accounts for the presence of a shallow flood shoal that limits flow from the ocean into the bay. As the difference in depth between inlet and flood shoal increases, the amplitude and phase of the incoming tide are increasingly modified from predictions without a flood shoal, and flows into the bay are further hindered.

One su tokom svog rada koristila sledeća dokazna sredstva: priznanja okrivljenih, suočenja okrivljenih, svedoke, suočenja okrivljenih i svedoka i pisane isprave.
The subject of this doctoral dissertation are two irregular courts – Irregular Court for Rebels (1839) and Martial Court formed on the occasion of Katanska Rebellion (1844). The first of these two courts was formed after Jovan’s rebellion, incited by Prince Miloš Obrenović (1815–1839, 1858–1860) with the goal of weakening the authority of his opponents in State Council and renewal of the ruler’s absolute power, had been quenched. Antecedent of the Irregular Court’s establishment, four investigation boards had undertaken the investigation against the persons suspected of participation in Jovan’s Rebellion. In the course of the inquiry the boards produced following evidence: suspects’ confessions, confrontations of suspects, witnesses, confrontations of suspects with witnesses and documentary evidence. Irregular Court commenced its work on July 25th 1839. This institution also performed production of evidence, during which more or less above-cited sorts of evidence were produced. After the evidence had been shown, Irregular Court turned to deliberation. Less important suspects were either acquitted or sentenced to mild punishments, as those who Irregular Court found organizers and instigators of Jovan’s Rebellion are condemned to multiyear prison sentences. The convicts of less significance were pardoned while Irregular Court’s activity was still in progress. Not long after, more important convicts were granted pardon as well. Katane (Hussars)’s Rebellion, the event that occasioned the formation of the second irregular court, represents an unsuccessful attempt of Obrenović dynasty's followers to overthrow Constitution-Defenders' regime. The inquiry against some of the suspects was conducted by Toma Vučić Perišić, the commander of the troops sent to put down Katane's Rebellion, and Stevan Novaković, a judge of Šabac District Court. Martial Court also carried out investigations, of which all suspects were subjects. Besides evidence mentioned in previous paragraph, vouchments for a suspects' moral integrity and rightful political attitude, given by the representatives of local authorities, were also used in the proceedings led by Martial Court. The organizers and instigators of Katane's Rebellion were sentenced to death, the persons who knew that the rebellion would break out and did not report it to the authorities were condemned to perpetual forced labor, the individuals who joined the rebells were sentenced to prison whose duration varied. The people who used Rebellion-provoked tumultation to commit thefts and burgalries were, according to verdicts of Court Martial, to undertake corporal punishments or two-year prison. In 1845 and 1846 a certain number of convicts was pardonned, as some sentences were mitigated. Nevertheless, most of them were not granted pardon. The reason of Martial Court's greater harshness in comparison with Irregular Court lies in political circumstances in which the two institutions worked. Prince Miloš’opponents were not favorite among the people. Therefore they did not want to even more deteriorate their low popularity by admitting Irregular Court to pronounce severe punishments. On the other hand, in 1844 Obrenovićs’ partisans were not serious threat to Constitution-Defenders regime. It enabled power-holders to punish an attempt of Obrenović’s reaction more severely.

Full textMicrotubules are essential cytoskeletal elements composed of α- and β-tubulin heterodimers. They are involved in a number of cellular processes, including intracellular transport, cell motility and cell division. However, how microtubules can adapt to all these different functions remains largely unknown. One of the mechanism, which could contribute to microtubule diversity are posttranslational modifications of tubulin. Among tubulin modifications polyglutamylation has a high potential for changing microtubule properties and thus adapting them to different roles. It consists of addition of long glutamate side chains to multiple glutamate residues located in the C-terminal tail of both α- and β-tubulin, which are known as interaction sites for many microtubule associated proteins (MAPs) and molecular motors. In my studies I focused on the role of polyglutamylation in sperm development. Using mice and Drosophila as model systems, I showed that changing the levels of this modification, either by up- or downregulation, results in the assembly of structurally abnormal sperm and causes male sterility. In addition, I also addressed the role of one of the potential effectors of polyglutamylation, a microtubule-severing enzyme called katanin. I demonstrated that in the absence of katanin the production of male germ cells is severely compromised leading to male sterility. Taken together my data suggest that proper balance of tubulin polyglutamylation is essential for sperm development and that its effects may be mediated by katanin whose activity has been proposed to be dependent on tubulin polyglutamylation. Moreover, during my PhD project I developed a method for production of differentially glutamylated microtubules. Using porcine brain tubulin, which is known to be highly glutamylated, as a starting material I perform deglutamylation to obtain the non-glutamylated version of it. Obtaining these two types of tubulin allows now to directly testing whether the interactions between microtubules and the MAPs of interests are dependent on tubulin polyglutamyaltion

Full textThe formation of a functional nervous system depends on the accuracy of its network wiring during embryonic and postnatal development. Axon outgrowth and navigation ultimately rely on the reorganization of the microtubule (MT) and actin networks. Historically considered as key players in axon extension, MTs have been gradually shown to play an instructive role in axon guidance decisions, which sheds new light on the potential involvement of MT-associated proteins (MAPs) in these navigational processes. Our team program aims at deciphering the differential role and functional redundancy of a few neuronal MT-associated ATPases, including the MT-severing spastin, katanin and the newly discovered fidgetin-like 1, in SMN axon outgrowth. During my PhD, I have first participated in the functional analysis of fidgetin-like 1, which has revealed that this ATPase controls SMN axon outgrowth via the regulation of MT plus-end dynamics. My main PhD project focused on the involvement of katanin in SMN development, which has established the pivotal role of this MT-severing enzyme in SMN axon targeting. Furthermore, I have explored the potential involvement of a MT post-translational modification, the tubulin polyglutamylation, in SMN axon outgrowth and navigation, and its influence on katanin MT-severing activity. Interestingly, my analysis of two neuronal MT polyglutamylases, TTLL6 and TTLL11, shows that these two enzymes differentially affect SMN axon outgrowth and pathfinding, and reveals the exclusive impact of TTLL6-mediated polyglutamylation on katanin MT-severing activity during this developmental process

Full textMutations in SPG4, encoding spastin cause the major form of Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias (HSP), a paralytic disorder characterised by the degeneration of the corticospinal tracts. Spastin and its close homologue p60-katanin are microtubule-severing enzymes (MSE) required for spinal motor neuron (SMN) axon extension during zebrafish development. However, their roles in SMN axon navigation which also rely on microtubules (MTs) remain elusive. My PhD work aimed at refining the functional specificity and redundancy of these MSE during motor circuit wiring and clarifying the physiopathology of SPG4-linked HSP. I have first contributed to show that p60-Katanin controls SMN axon targeting and larval locomotion in a dose-dependent manner. We also demonstrated that Spastin and p60-Katanin play differential roles in SMN navigation and identified TTLL6-mediated MT polyglutamylation as a key event in regulating p60-Katanin activity in this process. Concomitantly, I have conducted a functional analysis of spastin main isoforms (resulting from alternative translation, M1 and M61) during zebrafish development, which reveals their critical and specific involvement in two distinct signalling pathways that are both essential for motor circuit wiring and locomotor behaviours. This study has provided compelling evidences for a concerted role for M1 and other HSP proteins in the down-regulation of the BMP pathway and reveals a specific role for M87 as a downstream effector of Neuropilin-1 signalling. Altogether, our study emphasizes defective BMP signalling as a key pathogenic mechanism in HSP, and shows that dysregulation of the Neuropilin-1 pathway may equally contribute to SPG4-linked HSP

Full textThe purpose of this research was to study traumatic situations characterized by the absence of language. More specifically, the focus is on the paradoxical relation between the experience of "psychic death" in which language fails and on the other hand, different creative expressions in the arts (in the theatre of Samuel Beckett, in the poetic writings of Paul Celan, and the paintings of Francis Bacon), as well as specific discoveries recreating the possibility of language and even life. This act is made possible by the capability of the artist to support "psychic death" and absence of representation - named in this work "negative language", and to go through it by his art which recreates an access to life, creativity and new discoveries. This subject preoccupied the eminent British psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion and led him suggest an abundance of new theoretical and clinical concepts. The model developed in the present research uses these conceptualizations of Bion concerning the psychotherapist and the psychoanalyst and applies it to the different ways that serve the artist to successfully use creative processes to form a container (a fundamental concept in Bion’s theories), and thus get access to territories and zones which are beyond common language. Bion focuses on therapy while the present model and research focuses on the artistic creation as a testimony coming back from the "region of death". It enables not only to find a "language" for the artist but also to enrich the psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic theorization of Bion, who admitted as Freud did that the artist precedes the psychoanalyst and even paves a new way
