The fossil records of Kateretidae from the Mesozoic are significant for understanding the origin and early evolution of the family. The recent discoveries of Cretaceous kateretids have provided valuable information about the palaeodiversity and morphological disparity of the taxa. Although the family Kateretidae has fewer than 100 described extant species, its fossil record is growing. We present a genome assembly from an individual female specimen of Brachypterus glaber (beetle; Arthropoda; Insecta; Coleoptera; Kateretidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 648.30 megabases. Most of the assembly (95.55%) is scaffolded into 11 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled and is 21.86 kilobases in length. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 23,733 protein-coding genes.

Abstract:

The Nitidulidae (sap beetles) and Kateretidae (short-winged flower beetles) from New Brunswick are surveyed. Forty-six species have now been recorded in the province, twenty-nine of which are newly recorded in New Brunswick. Epuraea obliquus Hatch, is removed from New Brunswick's faunal list. The distribution and bionomics of newly recorded species is summarized. The New Brunswick fauna consist of 33 Nearctic species, four Holarctic species, and nine adventive species. Historical early dates of detection of all nine adventive species found in the province are provided.

Kateretidae have been considered a family of generalist (as a whole) fossil pollinator beetles after the description of many fossil species in this taxon from the Upper Cretaceous Kachin amber together with pollen grains from their host plant.
