Abstract:
Understanding how communities are impacted by environmental perturbations is integral for addressing the ongoing biodiversity crisis that impacts ecosystems worldwide. The fossil record serves as a window into ancient interactions and the responses of communities to past perturbations. Here, we re-examine paleontological data from Katouche Bay, Anguilla, a Holocene site in the Lesser Antilles. We reveal that the site was more diverse than previously indicated, with long-term, continuous records of three genera of extant lizards (Anolis, Ameiva, and Thecadactylus), and the early Holocene presen

AbstractWhile a well-known term from Greek literature, katochoi possessed a particular religious meaning within the Near East during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Since the first publication of documents relating to this term, it has been a topic of scholarly debate as to the nature of the katochoi themselves. This paper will elaborate upon the role of the katochoi at Baitokaike (modern Hoson Sulaiman in Syria) in order to define better their institution and analyze their involvement in the site’s long-term history within the economic, social, and religious context of the settlement and i

Although cementitious waste fines have proven to be recyclable by thermal treatment at moderate temperatures (400–700 °C), understanding how each phase rehydrates and contributes to the binding properties of rehydrated cementitious materials is still necessary. In this study, the de(re)hydration of katoite is investigated through in situ techniques, and its applicability as an alternative cement or supplementary cementitious material (SCM) is discussed. Mayenite (C12A7) and calcium dialuminate (CA2) are both components of Calcium aluminate Cement (CAC). The hydration of these phases depends on initial conditions especially on the temperature. Pure phases were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The hydration was carried out at three different temperatures – 20 °C, 30 °C and 60 °C. The course of hydration was investigated by isothermal calorimetry. The results prove, that higher temperature increase reactivity of phases and decrease their initial period of hydration. The X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) identified the hydration products of CA

Calcium aluminate cement (CAC) is a penitential candidate for bone replacements with good bioactivity but relative lower strength. In this study, biodegradable PGA fiber was incorporated into the CAC paste in order to improve the strength of the material. And MC3T3 cells were seeded on the surface of CAC and CAC/fiber to study their in vitro biocompatibility. The results indicate that the PGA fiber can improve the compressive strength of CAC without changing the crystalline phases and micromorphology. Calcium aluminate oxide hydrate, katoite and Gibbsite crystals were detected by XRD. Plate-li

Bombyliidae in the Namibian National Insect Collection and the Albany Museum, Grahamstown, South Africa were identified. This material included six genera and 54 species not previously recorded from Namibia. Among these species three were found to be new and are described: viz., Heterotropus diamantis sp. nov., Hyperusia longirostris sp. nov., Exoprosopa gracilis sp. nov. In addition a new species is proposed, Doliogethes decipiens sp. nov. for the species misidentified as Doliogethes tripunctatus (Macquart) by previous authors. Six new junior synonyms are proposed: Anastoechus eurystephus Hes
