Abstract:

This monograph provides an in-depth examination of the background, musical, and performance issues related to Duke Ellington’s wordless melodies, as well as epigrammatic biographies of Ellington and three female vocalists whose voices he employed as instruments: Adelaide Hall, Kay Davis, and Alice Babs. As early as the twenties, Ellington innovatively used the voice as a wordless instrumental color—an idea he extended into both his secular and sacred works. His iconoclastic instrumentalization of the soprano voice in compositions such as “Creole Love Call”, “Minnehaha”, “Transblucency”, “On a Turquoise Cloud”, and “T.G.G.T.” merits consideration by scholars and performers alike; these artistically complex melodies offer valuable insights into Ellington’s organic and collaborative compositional process. Although Ellington’s wordless melodies for the soprano voice have fallen on the periphery of discussions on twentieth-century American music, perhaps out of sheer obscurity, the need for alternative teaching and performance materials gives rise to a host of topics for further study regarding these pieces. Assimilating Ellington’s programmatic and mood pieces for the instrumentalized soprano voice into the canon of chamber repertoire opens a new arena of scholarly and artistic endeavor for the trained singer. Therefore, central to this study are the following considerations: context, pedagogical challenges (range, tessitura, vowels, phrase length, etc.) nature of accompaniment and instrumentation, form, and the nature of Ellington’s vocal writing as it pertains to the wordless obbligato and concert works featuring the wordless voice including, “Minnehaha,” “Transblucency,” “On A Turquoise Cloud,” and “T.G.T.T.” aka “Too Good To Title.” This study evaluates Ellington’s technique of casting the wordless female voice in unique musical contexts via musical analysis, as well as pedagogical and interpretive assessments of selected Ellington pieces,. The resultant amalgam of musical identities, both instrumental and vocal, fostered creative polyphony and epitomized the coined “Ellington Effect.” The following analysis centers on a chronological survey of Ellington’s wordless melodies performed and recorded by Adelaide Hall, Kay Davis, and Alice Babs. The goal of this project is to present a study in historical context and significance, style, device, and pedagogical/performance considerations of those works that employ the flexibility, technique, and aural training of the studied singer with instrumental jazz idioms in a cross-genre context.

Abstract:

The UN Security Council established on the 25th of April, 2013; The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) to support political processes in that country and carry out a number of security-related tasks. The mission was authorized a strong mandate by the Security Council to carry out its tasks and to protects its mandate. Despite the mission’s strong mandate, violence on civilians has not reduced which has led to a debate on whether the UN can handle the situation in Mali. This study tries to examine whether MINUSMA can be described according to David Kilcullens conceptualisation of a COIN-operation in three pillars of counterinsurgency, by doing so this study hopes to give theoretical insight and enable a way of understanding the goals and means of the mission in Mali more than the stabilizing mandate does. The result of the analysis shows that MINUSMA can be described as a COIN-operation in large extent, mainly in the areas of cooperation, information and security. The result also shows that even if MINUSMA doesn´t work directly in the area of politics & economics they support both direct and indirect other agencies that does, thereby giving theoretical insight to the mission in Mali.

Abstract:

Uppror och upprorsrörelser har förekommit långt tillbaka i historien. Redan romarna hade problem med upproriska rebellgrupper som vägrade inordna sig Roms lagar. Militärteoretiker har ägnat lång tid åt att försöka analysera bästa möjliga lösning på upproret. Dagens teorier kring uppror är starkt präglade av nuvarande konflikter i Irak och Afghanistan. David Kilcullens teorier utgår från dessa samlade erfarenheter och utgör idag förlaga till en rad nationers strategier för upprorsbekämpning. Risken är att dessa strategier är ett resultat av erfarenheter dragna här och nu. Syftet med denna studie har varit att pröva i vilken utsträckning Kilcullens teorier är utan orsakssamband och tidlösa då teorierna fått ligga till grund för nationers strategiutveckling avseende upprorsbekämpning. Detta har gjorts genom att Kilcullens teorier prövats mot Gustav Vasas agerande under Dackefejden. Resultatet av studien visar på stora skillnader när det gäller våldsanvändning. Det går inte att belägga att Kilcullens teorier skulle vara tillämpbara vid en upprorsbekämpning i en historisk konfliktmiljö som präglas av hög grad av strukturerat våld. Studien påvisar dock att Vasa vid flera tillfällen agerade med ickevåldsmetoder som till del går att återfinna i Kilcullens teorier. Sammantaget påvisar studien resultat som pekar på att Kilcullens teorier besitter ett antal orsakssamband och inte kan anses som tidlös.
Uprising and insurgency has always been present during history. Military theorists have been studying various uprisings during history in order to develop solutions how to counter uprisings and insurgency. Current theories involving counter-insurgency are in some way influenced by on-going conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. With the possibility of being type casted, the theories of David Kilcullen is based on US experiences from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and form the basic foundation of numerous national strategies when it comes to counter-insurgency and policy-making. The purpose of this study is to assess in what way Kilcullen´s theories are without causality and in what way they are timeless as the theory form the basis of several nations modern counter-insurgency strategies. The study has been done by appliqueing Kilcullen´s theories on the actions taken by Gustav Vasa during the Dacke War. The result shows great deviation when it comes to the amount of violence being used. It is not possible to confirm Kilcullen´s theories being applicable studying a historical uprising characterised by great violence. The study does on the other hand show acts of non-violent actions taken by Gustav Vasa that correlates with the theories of David Kilcullen. As a result the study shows evidence of causality and the theories seemingly being a result of the present situation. Therefore the Kilcullen theories can not be seen as timeless.

Abstract:

Trots att business-to- business (B2B) är tydligt överrepresenterat inom dagens globala e-handel präglas e-handelsportaler designade för detta ändamål av avsevärt sämre användbarhet och användarupplevelse än de inom andra områden av e-handel. Syftet med denna studie är således att klargöra problemområden gällande användbarhet som kan identifieras i e-handelsportaler avsedda för B2B. Vidare syftar forskningen till att praktiskt redovisa hur systemutvecklingsmetoder, ramverk och designprinciper kan appliceras för att åtgärda identifierade problemområden. För att genomföra studien utfördes intervjuer med en grupp informanter med erfarenhet av e-handelsportaler inom B2B. Utöver detta analyserades en existerande e-handelsportal för B2B som sedan vidareutvecklades utifrån vald teori och tidigare forskning. Resultatet av studien presenterar en uppsättning identifierade problemområden, ett praktiskt exempel på en förbättrad e-handelsportal samt hur en specifik systemutvecklingsmetod, ett ramverk och en uppsättning designprinciper kan tillämpas för att lyfta användbarhet och användarupplevelse.
Despite the fact that business-to- business (B2B) is clearly over-represented in today's global e-commerce, the portals designed for this purpose are characterized by greatly inferior usability and user experience compared to those in other areas of e-commerce. Thus, the purpose of this study is to clarify areas of concern regarding the usability that can be identified in the e-commerce portals intended for B2B. Further the research aims to practically show how system development methodologies, frameworks and design principles can be applied to address the identified problem areas. To conduct the study, interviews were held with a group of informants with experience in e-commerce portals in B2B. In addition, an existing e-commerce portal for B2B was analyzed and re-designed based on the chosen theory and previous research. The results of the study present a set of identified problem areas, a practical example of an improved e-commerce portal as well as how a specific system development approach, framework and set of design principles can be implemented to elevate the usability and user experience.

Syftet med aktuell studie är att undersöka vad den ändrade titeln från förskolechef tillrektor kan innebäraför yrkesuppdraget. I studien undersökshur yrkesuppdragethar definierats i läroplaner och styrdokument genom åren för att få en fördjupad förståelse för hur yrkesuppdragethar skrivits fram.Utgångspunkthar tagitsi den teoretiska ansatsen avFoucaults perspektiv på makt.I denkvalitativastudien harsju rektorer i förskolanintervjuats. Intervjuerna visar att förutsättningarna för uppdraget ser väldigt olika ut, med olika stora enheter och olika ledningsorganisation, vilket främst påverkar rektorernas möjlighet att verka som pedagogiska ledare. I studien lyftshur chefskapet i förskolan har beskrivits historiskt i styrdokument. Rektorerna i dennastudie menar att fortbildning för rektorer i förskolan i form av rektorsprogrammet blir en viktig del för att höja kvaliteten och likvärdigheten i förskolan. Men främst lyfter de att deras ändrade yrkestitel kan innebära ökad status för förskolan i allmänhetens ögon och att de själva kan mötasmer respektfullti och med denna titel. Effekterna av professionensförändrade yrkestiteltror de kan ta tid då det behöver implementeras på alla håll. Först och främst måste alla huvudmän använda sig av rätt benämning och sedan måste även samhället, med politiker och journalister i spetsen, använda rätt vokabulär när detkommer till förskolans kontext.

Abstract:

The discursive and critical positions of the ‘classic’ nineteenth-century novel, particularly the woman’s novel, in the field of adaptation studies have been dominated by long-standing concerns about textual fidelity and the generic processes of the text-screen transfer. The sociocultural patterns of adaptation criticism have also been largely ensconced in representations of literary women on screen. Taking a decisive twist from tradition, this thesis traces the evolution of representations of masculinity in the malleable characters of Rochester and Heathcliff in film and television adaptations of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights between 1939 and 2009. Concepts of masculinity have been a neglected area of enquiry in studies of the ‘classic’ novel on screen. Adaptations of the Brontës’ novels, as well as the adapted novels of other ‘classic’ women authors such as Jane Austen, George Eliot and Elizabeth Gaskell, increasingly foreground male character in traditionally female-oriented narratives or narratives whose primary protagonist is female. This thesis brings together industrial histories, textual frames and sociocultural influences that form the wider contexts of the adaptations to demonstrate how male characterisation and different representations of masculinity are reformulated and foregrounded through three different adaptive histories of the narratives of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Through the contours of the film and television industries, the application of text and context analysis, and wider sociocultural considerations of each period an understanding of how Rochester and Heathcliff have been transmuted and centralised within the adaptive history of the Brontë novel.

Abstract:

The original purpose of this thesis is to explore the possibility of setting up a school in Aotearoa (New Zealand) that operates according to the principles and philosophies of Summerhill School in Suffolk, England. An examination of Summerhill School is therefore the purpose of this study, particularly because of its commitment to self-regulation and direct democracy for children. My argument within this study is that Summerhill presents precisely the type of model Māori as Tangata Whenua (Indigenous people of Aotearoa) need in our design of an alternative schooling programme, given that self-regulation and direct democracy are traits conducive to achieving Tino Rangitiratanga (Self-government, autonomy and control). In claiming this however, not only would Tangata Whenua benefit from this model of schooling; indeed it has the potential to serve the purpose of all people regardless of age race or gender. At present, no school in Aotearoa has replicated Summerhill's principles and philosophies in their entirety. Given the constraints of a Master's thesis, this piece of work is therefore only intended as a theoretical background study for a much larger kaupapa (purpose). It is my intention to produce a further and more comprehensive study in the future using Summerhill as a vehicle to initiate a model school in Aotearoa that is completely antithetical to the dominant neo-liberal philosophy of our age. To this end, my study intends to demonstrate how neo-liberal schooling is universally dictated by global money market trends, and how it is an ideology fueled by the indifferent acceptance of the general population. In other words, neo-liberal theory is a theory of capitalist colonisation. In order to address the long term vision, this project will be comprised of two major components. The first will be a study of the principal philosophies that govern Summerhill School. As I will argue, Summerhill creates an environment that is uniquely successful and fulfilling for the children who attend. At the same time, it will also be shown how it is a philosophy that is entirely contrary to a neo-liberal 3 mindset; an antidote, to a certain extent, to the ills of contemporary schooling. The second component will address the historical movement of schooling in Aotearoa since the Labour Party's landslide victory in 1984, and how the New Zealand Curriculum has been affected by these changes. I intend to trace the importation of neo-liberal methodologies into Aotearoa such as the 'Picot Taskforce,' 'Tomorrows Schools' and 'Bulk Funding,' to name but a few. The neo-liberal ideologies that have swept through this country in the last two decades have relentlessly metamorphosised departments into businesses and forced ministries into the marketplace, hence causing the 'ideological reduction of education' and confining it to the parameters of schooling. The purpose of this research project is to act as a catalyst for the ultimate materialization of an original vision; the implementation of a school like Summerhill in Aotearoa. A study of the neo-liberal ideologies that currently dominate this country is imperative in order to understand the current schooling situation in Aotearoa and create an informed comparison between the 'learning for freedom' style of Summerhill and the 'learning to earn' style of our status quo schools. It is my hope to strengthen the argument in favour of Summerhill philosophy by offering an understanding of the difference between the two completely opposing methods of learning.
