Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Throughout history the subject of heredity showed up in varied interpretations. The development of life sciences has greater insight into its mechanisms; on the other hand, it becomes indispensable to reflect on theoretical determinisms that appear to fall mainly on the field of Health Sciences. The history of the eugenics is an event that allows important reflections on the past and present. The term \"eugenics\" was coined by Francis Galton in 1883 to name the science of the improvement of the biological heritage of humanity. It should offer theories and methods towards mental and physical perfectibility. Renato Kehl (1889-1974), brazilian physician and pharmacist, was one of the main exponents of Brazilian eugenics, publicist and articulator of eugenic societies formed in the early decades of the twentieth century. Some notions of progress versus decay contained in his works - mostly published between 1917 and 1940 -are treated in this dissertation. Part of the Brazilian eugenics campaign debates about the sterilization of \"unwanted\", about marriage and immigration restrictions and confinement of so-called degenerate. In this context the eugenics movement was presented by its enthusiasts as a solution against the supposedly inevitable and alarming decay that affected the nation

This work aims to present the social determinations regarding the objectification of the eugenics movement in Brazil from the path of Renato Kehl (1889-1974), leading exponent of eugenic ideology in Brazil. Medical and pharmaceutical, stiffer way, defended the dissemination and implementation of the eugenics project, holding conferences in Brazil and in several Latin American countries. Renato Kehl Brazilian intellectual elite would establish responsibility eugenics parameters, the success of eugenics depended on its implementation as public policy. For this purpose Renato Kehl founded in 1918, the Eugenics Society of São Paulo, with the mission to spread the eugenic idea in Brazil and implement eugenics - oriented proposals. Renato Kehl was still one of the main organizers of the movement in the creation and development institutions at the national level; in 1929, founded the Eugenics Bulletin in order to publish texts on eugenic theme in the national and international levels, as well as disclose the proposed laws based on eugenics and implemented in countries like the United States and Germany. Renato Kehl was the forerunner of the eugenics movement in Brazil and claimed that the Brazilian people would be perfectly effected if there were the extinction of feebleminded, insane, psychopaths, criminals, delinquents and diverted; epileptics, alcoholics and addicted to illicit drugs; patients (tuberculosis, leprosy and others); blind and deaf; shapeless, people dependent on welfare, the homeless, bums and destitute.

Abstract:
Upon Voltaire’s death, a group of enlightened admirers of the patriarch founded the « Société Littéraire Typographique » with the aim of publishing a new complete edition of his works. This subversive and pioneering project, directed by Beaumarchais and Condorcet in clandestinity, was aimed at disseminating the texts and ideas of the Enlightenment. Despite the innumerous obstacles standing in the way of this subversive entreprise, the correspondents of the SLT were able to complete « ce cher Voltaire » and deliver to posterity, between 1785 and 1790, an edition in-Octavo in 70 volumes and an edition in-12° in 90 volumes. This complete posthumous edition of Voltaire’s works was a first in the French publishing, both for the luxury and the care which caracterized the realization of the book, « a masterpiece of typographical art » and the correspondence, in which we can see an image of the private man and his intimacy, beside his literary writings. The last volume, the Vie de Voltaire, is the textum and the link between these two parts. For Condorcet, Voltaire had transformed his life into a masterpiece, which the editors wanted to show to posterity for its political and moral value. In addition to its exemplarity, this edition raises many historical, philological and ideological questions related to book history, to the knowledge of the Voltairian corpus, to the major political and ideological issues portrayed in Voltaire’s writings in the very polemical context of pre-Revolutionay times, to the literary myth created by this editorial enterprise, and to the reception of his writings thus made public

Abstract The aim of this research is to investigate the effects of design parameters on disc cams’ loading capacity. A kinematic-Hertzian stress parameter (KHS) and a kinematic-elastohydrodynamic lubrication parameter (KEHL) are derived first, which reflect the combined contributions of kinematic parameters to Hertzian stress and elastohydrodynamic lubrication film thickness respectively, and then KHS and KEHL are analyzed against each design parameter. Based on the analysis, guidelines for cam mechanism design are proposed.

The latest CFB-projects in Germany are utilizing demolition wood and production waste from wood-working industries. Compared to coal, wood-based fuels have some special characteristics. To ensure smooth fuel feeding, the wood fuels have to be carefully crushed and chipped. From demolition wood it is necessary to remove metals and other large uncombustible impurities. Moisture content of wood waste may vary in a wide range from 10–60%. To ensure steady heat input into the boiler using volumetric feeders, a good homogenization at fuel yard is required. Fuel ash contents are low and particle sizes are fine. Due to high potassium contents, ash melts at low temperature; hence, ashes have a tendency for fouling and slagging in boilers. Biomass fuels also contain some chlorine, which together with alkalies, induces aggressive corrosion. The demolition wood may contain additional heavy metals. Corrosion abatement is discussed and related to the novel INTREX superheater technology. In INTREX boilers, final superheater and reheater are placed in the hot solid return flow back from the cyclone to the combustion chamber, thus avoiding high temperature corrosion. This allows steam temperature after superheater in the flue gas channel to be kept below 400°C. The arrangement also prevents effective fouling of heating surfaces. The longtime experience of demolition wood-fired plants in Hornitex Beeskow, 86.3 MWt, 110 t/h, 480°C, 89 bar (startup 1996), Hornitex Horn 94 MWt, 120 t/h, 480°C, 89 bar (startup in 1999) is presented. Operational results from Ko¨hler Kehl 44 MWt, 59 t/h, 500, 90 bar (startup in 2002) are discussed. The used steam parameters allow an increase of power production efficiency from 25–30% to 33–35.5% using steam cycle without reheat and with reheat up to 36.4% (gross) in condensing operation.

Abstract:
In this paper, foil and planform parameters which govern the level of viscous drag produced by the keel of a sailing yacht are discussed. It is shown that the application of laminar boundary-Layer flow offers great potential for increased boat speed resulting from the reduction in viscous drag. Three foil shapes have been designed and it is shown that their hydrodynamic characteristics are very much dependent on location and mode of boundary-Layer transition. The planform parameter which strongly affects the capabilities of the keel to achieve laminar flow is lea ding-edge sweep angle. The two significant phenomena related to keel sweep angle which can cause premature transition of the laminar boundary layer are crossflow instability and turbulent contamination of the leading-edge attachment line. These flow phenomena and methods to control them are discussed in detail. The remaining factors that affect the maintainability of laminar flow include surface roughness, surface waviness, and freestream turbulence. Recommended limits for these factors are given to insure achievability of laminar flow on the keel. In addition, the application of a simple trailing-edge flap to improve the hydrodynamic characteristics of a foil at moderate-to-high leeway angles is studied.

Malej, Matt, and Fengyan Shi. Suppressing the pressure-source instability in modeling deep-draft vessels with low under-keel clearance in FUNWAVE-TVD. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), May 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/40639.

Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) documents the development through verification and validation of three instability-suppressing mechanisms in FUNWAVE-TVD, a Boussinesq-type numerical wave model, when modeling deep-draft vessels with a low under-keel clearance (UKC). Many large commercial ports and channels (e.g., Houston Ship Channel, Galveston, US Army Corps of Engineers [USACE]) are traveled and affected by tens of thousands of commercial vessel passages per year. In a series of recent projects undertaken for the Galveston District (USACE), it was discovered that when deep-draft vessels are modeled using pressure-source mechanisms, they can suffer from model instabilities when low UKC is employed (e.g., vessel draft of 12 m¹ in a channel of 15 m or less of depth), rendering a simulation unstable and obsolete. As an increasingly large number of deep-draft vessels are put into service, this problem is becoming more severe. This presents an operational challenge when modeling large container-type vessels in busy shipping channels, as these often will come as close as 1 m to the bottom of the channel, or even touch the bottom. This behavior would subsequently exhibit a numerical discontinuity in a given model and could severely limit the sample size of modeled vessels. This CHETN outlines a robust approach to suppressing such instability without compromising the integrity of the far-field vessel wave/wake solution. The three methods developed in this study aim to suppress high-frequency spikes generated nearfield of a vessel. They are a shock-capturing method, a friction method, and a viscosity method, respectively. The tests show that the combined shock-capturing and friction method is the most effective method to suppress the local high-frequency noises, while not affecting the far-field solution. A strong test, in which the target draft is larger than the channel depth, shows that there are no high-frequency noises generated in the case of ship squat as long as the shock-capturing method is used.
