Abstract:
Kekabu wood &nbsp;<em>(</em><em>B</em><em>omba</em><em>x &nbsp;ceib</em><em>a </em>L.), which is &nbsp;locally known as kapok or randu &nbsp;has long been planted&nbsp; as crops troughout &nbsp;the country, as fiber producer aimed for stuffing &nbsp;pillow. This species is considered as a giant tree which could produce a large quantity of timber. Unfortunately, the timber is too soft, having low density and several physical defects during drying, limiting its uses in conventional wood processing. Any treatment which could significantly increase its structural density may be useful for diversifying the uses of this timber.&nbsp; &nbsp; This study examined some anatomical changes that may exist during mechanical densification. Wood samples measuring 40 mm thick, 40 mm wide and 500 mm long were steamed at 126&deg;C for 30 minutes prior to &nbsp;pressing of 23.75 kg/cm&#39;. &nbsp;Anatomical measures were undertaken using light microscope and scanning electron microscope &nbsp;on both treated and untreated samples. Results showed that the treatment&nbsp; significantly reduced void volume and ray distance of approximately a half the initial wood structure, followed by an increased in wood density of more than 50%.

Abstract:
Abundance and distribution of aquatic insects respecting to several water chemical parameters from six rivers were studied in order to determine the performance of biological index in monitoring the water quality. A total of 960 individuals of aquatic insects from nine orders were recorded using kick and drag sampling techniques. Lubok Semilang had the greatest number of aquatic insects with 250 individuals, followed by Telaga Tujuh (181 individuals) and Sungai Durian Perangin (171 individuals). EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera) order were the most dominant order recorded in all six rivers. Lata Kekabu had more diverse and richer aquatic insect assemblages based on ecological indices compared to the other five rivers. In order to evaluate the water quality of recreational rivers in Malaysia, Family Biotic Index (FBI), Malaysian Family Biotic Index (MFBI) and Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) were used and compared with Water Quality Index to determine the water quality at the study areas. Results demonstrated that the biotic indices were more sensitive towards changes in water parameters than the WQI. Among all the biological indices, MFBI was the most suitable index to be adopted in Malaysian river water assessment as it is more reliable in assessing the status of water quality.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study aimed to describe the transformation of Dewi Kekayi story in the Ramayana epic into Kekayi (2017) by Oka Rusmini. This research used intertextual theory. Applying structural approach, this qualitative study described the transformation of each part of the story. Content analysis was employed to analyze the data. The results showed that the story of Dewi Kekayi in the Ramayana epic was made into a short story hypogram entitled Kekayi by Oka Rusmini through story transformation. In the transformation process, the author developed the original story (hypogram) into a new story by deconstructing the personality of Dewi Kekayi to Kekayi character in Kekayi short story. Deconstruction carried out by the author caused a contradiction between the character of Kekayi in the story of Dewi Kekayi and Kekayi short story.

Abstract:

GANIEV, ELDAR. "Measurement of the branching fraction, longitudinal polarization fraction, and charge-parity violating asymmetry in $B^+\rightarrow\rho^+\rho^0$ decays at Belle." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Trieste, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11368/2995661.

Full text
Abstract:
This is an experimental particle physics thesis aimed at measurements of properties of $B^+\rightarrow\rho^+\rho^0$ decays for the determination of the quark-mixing matrix angle \newline \mbox{$\alpha/\phi_2=\text{arg}(-(V_{td}V^*_{tb})/(V_{ud}V^*_{ub}))$}, a fundamental parameter of quark dynamics. The analysis uses the full data set of electron-positron ($e^+e^-$) collisions produced by the energy-asymmetric KEKB collider at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance collected by the Belle experiment and corresponding to 772 million pairs of bottom-antibottom mesons. Belle is an hermetic magnetic spectrometer surrounded by particle-identification detectors, calorimeters, and muon detectors designed to reconstruct the decay products of 10.58 GeV $e^+e^-$ collisions. The analysis is entirely developed using simulated and control-data samples. Only when all procedures are established the analysis is applied to the signal candidates in data. The principal challenge is to overcome the initial $10^{-6}$ signal-to-background ratio with a selection sufficiently discriminating to isolate an abundant, low-background signal without introducing intractable correlations in the multidimensional fit that determines the parameters of interest. Data are enriched in $B^+\rightarrow\rho^+\rho^0$ events by a multivariate statistical-learning selection that suppresses the most prominent source of background. A multidimensional fit of sample composition then identifies statistically the signal. Special care is devoted to keep the impact of systematic uncertainties under control. A total of approximately 1000 $B^+\rightarrow\rho^+\rho^0$ decays are reconstructed. The fit results, combined with acceptance and efficiency corrections determined from simulation, allow for determining the $B^+\to\rho^+\rho^0$ branching fraction, \begin{center} $\mathcal{B}(B^+\rightarrow\rho^+\rho^0)~=~[\text{xx}]^{+1.20}_{-1.19}~(\textrm{stat})\pm 1.46~(\textrm{syst})$, \end{center} the fraction of longitudinally polarized $B^+\rightarrow\rho^+\rho^0$ decays, \begin{center} $f_L~=~[\text{xx}]\pm 0.025~(\textrm{stat})\pm 0.020~(\textrm{syst})$, \end{center} and the ${\it CP}$-violating charge-asymmetry, \begin{center} $A_{\it CP}~=~[\text{xx}]\pm 0.052~(\textrm{stat})\pm 0.015~(\textrm{syst})$. \end{center} The central values are hidden as the analysis is still under internal collaboration review. The uncertainties are comparable with, or better than, the current world best results. Our results provide a 13$\%$ improvement on the global knowledge of $\alpha/\phi_2$.<br>This is an experimental particle physics thesis aimed at measurements of properties of $B^+\rightarrow\rho^+\rho^0$ decays for the determination of the quark-mixing matrix angle \newline \mbox{$\alpha/\phi_2=\text{arg}(-(V_{td}V^*_{tb})/(V_{ud}V^*_{ub}))$}, a fundamental parameter of quark dynamics. Abstract:
M.A. (African Languages)<br>The purpose of this study is to make a critical evaluation of M.A. Kekana's Nnete fela applying the basic elements of a detective novel. Use will be made of the views of different scholars and authorities on the detective novel. Northern Sotho has very few books that can be said to be true detective novels. Attempts in this regard were made by, amongst others, D.N. Moloto with his work Tshipu e rile ke lebelo (1962), H.N.D. Bopape with his novel Lenong la gauta (1982) and V.M. Moloto with the book Letlapa la bophelo (1983). We also have very few works in Northern Sotho evaluating and criticising the detective novel, hence this humble attempt. The traditional approach will be used by which the features of a detective novel will be applied to the chosen text.

Kekana, Gift Lesiba. "Emperical investigation into the financial management in the Police service, North West province / Gift Lesiba Kekana." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/15790.

Full text
Abstract:
South African Police Service (SAPS) is mandated by act no 68 of 1996 to ensure a safe environment for all people living in South Africa. Like any other government department in South Africa, SAPS utilises public funds to perform day to day duties and to provide better service to the community in the form of a secure environment for all people living in this country. South African Police Service is regulated by the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA act 1 of 1999) in utilising the public funds. PFMA act requires that accounting officer be appointed in terms of section 36 (1) of the act and furthermore, requires that the accounting officer should ensure in terms of section 38 (1) (i) that the department has and maintains effective, efficient and transparent systems of financial and risk management and internal control. It also requires in terms of section 38 (1) (iii) that accounting officer ensures and maintains an appropriate procurement and procurement and provisioning system which is fair, equitable, transparent, competitive and cost-effective. According to the reports by the Auditor General in the previous three (3) financial years (2008/2009 - 2009/2010 - 2010/2011) financial management within SAPS has been unsatisfactory. The Auditor General pointed out same problem year on year of fruitless and wasteful expenditure which in many instances are caused by the penalties for not paying license fees in time. These suggested that control and measures were not in place to eradicate the problem . The report of 2008/2009 by the Auditor General revealed that "the accounting officer at SAPS did not ensure that the department has and maintains an effective, efficient and transparent system and internal controls regarding performance management. The information gathered from the study undertaken in SAPS North West from employees working at Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Finance at Potchefstroom, Rustenburg and Mafikeng revealed that finances while managed well, more needs to be done to ensure the effective utilisation of the finances. Fruitless and wasteful expenditure was blamed on management for not following the plan in place and procedures when procuring goods and services. Incompetent employees were also found to be contributing to the rise in fruit less and wasteful expenditures.<br>Thesis (MBA) North-West University, Mafikeng Campus, 2012

Kekana, Mabeba Gladys. "The impact of substance abuse among youth on the risk profile of Bekkersdal community / Mabeba Gladys Kekana." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/14883.

Full text
Abstract:
The influx of youth abusing substances is a major problem. The effect of substance abuse may have far-reaching consequences for defining the vulnerability of the offending group as well as for contributing to the disaster risk faced by the community as a whole. The effects of substance abuse on young people have the potential to contribute to an increased vulnerability of this group. It becomes the responsibility of the family and community to bear the burden of its drug-afflicted members and the implications of their addiction. The study was conducted in Bekkersdal, which is a community that has a significant problem with youth abusing substances. The degree to which their abuse affects families and the broader community in terms of increasing risk has not been examined. The dissertation aims to evaluate the effect of substance abuse among the youth on the risk profile of the Bekkersdal community. According to Disaster Risk Reduction, one of the important activities of the state is to increase capacity of communities and households to minimize the risk that may occur and also most importantly, monitoring the likelihood of and the state of alertness to disasters that may occur. A qualitative, explorative research design was employed and data gathered using structured interviews involving 30 adults namely School Principals, Teachers, Community Social workers, Community Leaders, Religious Leaders, Disaster managers and a Nurse from the area. The interviews were analysed by means of themes. The research indicated that substance-abusing youth create conditions which undermine human, physical and social capital and hence contribute to instability in the livelihood-based system. It was also evident to this research that it encourages the importance of engaging community members in discussions about aspects that concern them which is an empowerment process in itself. As they become more involved, they also have hope that things will work better for them by actively rebuilding their own lives and communities. All the information gathered revealed the link between the negative impacts of substance abuse and its risk profile in the Bekkersdal community.<br>M Development and Management, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Kekana, Lucky Mahlatse. "An investigation into the role of Information and Communications Technology (ICTs) in the South African Public Service / Kekana Lucky Mahlatse." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10507.

Full text
Abstract:
The South African public service, like many organisation, is embracing information and communication technology (ICTs) and the main aim is to improve and better their services. Frenzel (1999:18) indicates that this is because ICT has the potential to reduce costs, improve internal efficiency, capture economies of scale and bring organisations even closer to their customers and suppliers. Significant initiatives have been taken in the last couple of years. These include the need to address the coordination of ICT initiatives in the public service, through the establishment of the Office of the Government Chief Information Officers (OGCIO) within the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA). The South African public service also established State Information Technology Agency (SITA) responsible for the provision of information technology, system and related services. However, although ICT has the potential to infuse every area of the public service and improve service delivery, ICT is a management task that should be addressed in the overall context of an organisation and its environment. It is therefore in the best interest of this study to investigate the role of ICT in the South African public service. A number of aspects of ICT were investigated, including the challenges facing government in the implementation of ICT, critical success factors of ICT and the role of ICT in the public service. Among the challenges indentified include leadership instability, lack of common shared vision and strategy, lack of skills, training and development and poor communication and decision making processes are significant organizational factors constraining the successful implementation of ICT in government. Lack of ICT infrastructure, integration and interoperability issues are cited as technical challenges to successful implementation. Key findings from the study were that ICTs should integrate service delivery across government. It should also facilitate business efficiency and effectiveness and contribute towards socio-economic development. It is therefore necessary that ICT must be driven by government‘s developmental agenda, rather than technology. It is recommended that this could be achieved through a sustained shared, common vision across government, adequate resources and strategic partnerships with the business community.<br>Master of Public Administration, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012

Bc. Veronika Vopelková The Fate of Witches: Animism and Traditional Healing in Cameroon Abstract Traditional culture and religion disappear and assimilate into the dominant cultures around the world. Globalization has affected all ethnic groups in Africa. Cameroonian Grassfield is still among those which have been preserved diverse customs and rituals. In the past, the Fondom Kedjom Keku - today, village Big Babanki became the focus of this anthropological work. The aim is to understand and describe the current state of the traditional religion of the inhabitants of this village. For comparison with the original form of each religious phenomena serves a number of publications, researches and interviews with witnesses. This work is based on my field research, participatory observation, interviews and questionnaires. My attention is fixed on a belief in Kedjom gods, spirits, souls of ancestors and contemporary celebration of death, magic and witchcraft, supernatural power of amulets, spiritual power of twins and secret societies. Considering the frequency of allegations of witchcraft, this theme is also elaborated in general view with regard to the Kedjom Keku people and the whole Grassfield. Full text
Abstract:
M.A. (African Languages)<br>This research concentrates primarily on feminism and attempts to study it in relation to Northern Sotho literature. As Kekana is undoubtedly the first author to deal with this topic in her novel - NONYANA YA TOKOLOGO (The Bird of Freedom), this proves the fact that in Northern Sotho literature feminism is still at its infancy stage, hence, the topic of this research - KEKANA'S NONYANA YA TOKOLOGO AS REPRESENTATIVE OF EMERGING FEMINISM IN NORTHERN SOTHO LITERATURE. Feminism emerges in Northern Sotho literature for the following two reasons: firstly, Kekana is the first writer in Northern Sotho to show vested interest in the topic; secondly, though her efforts in pioneering this path are appreciated, she should have clearly shown the way women should go to be liberated from patriarchal prison. After demonstrating so well that men oppress women in a patriarchal society, she dampens women's morale to aspire to freedom by returning Taamane to her oppressor- Tshaledi.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The students who participated in the Fall 2000 “design class” offered by the Department of Ocean and Resource Engineering at the University of Hawaii performed a preliminary design of a cold seawater facility at Kekaha, Hawaii. The course imparted a great deal of design experience, but more importantly it introduced the classmates to cold seawater as a developing resource with high potential. As the two students who participated in the design class, we were particularly impressed with this resource and convinced that cold seawater can feasibly be developed as a valuable resource for island communities. We collaborated to combine, condense and generalize the reports in an effort to familiarize other ocean engineers and island planners to this technology and its potential. This paper discusses several uses for cold seawater in tropical island settings and the site characteristics required to feasibly develop a land-based cold seawater facility. The preliminary design of a cold seawater facility at Kekaha is presented along with an economic analysis of its capital and operating costs.
