Abstract:
The article gives a survey about a new manual to the Celtic languages in Western Europe. Its author is the German linguist Herbert PILCH (university of Freiburg). As a book of reference the title is especially recommended to students of Onomastics as well as to readers with interests in Celtic names or names of Celtic origin in other languages. It stands in sharp contrast to a pseudo-scientific tendency of explaining anthroponyms and toponyms in Eastern Germany with the help of “Celtic roots' based on an old obsolete publication with a large following in recent times. The main argument there is the statement German people spoke Celtic based dialects up to the Middle Ages and thus all names have only been horribly bent by adapting to the modern German language. The book Die keltischen Sprachen und Literaturen is therefore of especial importance to refute unscientific opinions and intentions.

Abstract:

Uppsatsen består av två delar. Den första ska ge förståelse för vilka kelterna var både som term och som folk. Den ska också ge förståelse för vilken deras religion var och hur samhället såg ut. Avgränsningen blev till att uppsatsen till största delen bara handlar om kelterna på de brittiska öarna och inte de kelter som levde på den europeiska kontinenten. I den andra delen undersöks det om det finns något samband mellan den keltiska festen Samhain och dagens populära Halloweenfest. Litteraturen som användes var så vetenskaplig som möjligt, mycket av tiden har gått åt till att granska och legitimera den litteratur som blivit huvudkällor till uppsatsen, till exempel Anne Ross och Miranda J Green. Analysen består av i huvudsak av tre delar;

Den första är en diskussion om det på ett bra sätt framgår vilka kelterna var på de brittiska öarna och om jag till viss del håller med författarna och forskarna. Den andra är en diskussion om litteraturen och hur man bör förhålla sig till den och den tredje är ett försök att visa att samhain och halloween har ett samband. Detta har jag gjort utifrån en modell där det plockats ut de tre viktigaste elementen ur de högtidsdagar som förknippas med samhain och halloween genom flera århundraden. Detta för att på ett lätt och överskådligt sätt se om det finns några element som levt vidare genom åren och hur de ser ut idag.

Abstract:
The report describes the production of graphic correspondence and marketing material for DUCIS(Dalarna University Centre for Irish Studies).A logotype symbol is created on the basis of an element from the Celtic art, and a graphic material thatharmonies with this ideal of style is built around the symbol. A unique visiting card, correspondence cardand letterhead is produced to strengthen the identity of DUCIS outwards.The work proceeds with an international education folder which is an important element in the marketingwork for the MA-education which starts in the autumn of 2003. Two posters, one for the opening ofDUCIS in may 2003 and one for a conference in 2004, are produced. Finally, a redesign of the book coverfor NIS, Nordic Irish Studies, is carried out.The report describes the working process consisting of meetings, practical work and other elementswithin the process. The conclusion is that the work has been quite successful and that this, to a largeextent, depended on an engaged and supporting commissioner. The commissioner also is very satisfi edwith the results.The in-depth studies of the project is about the art and design of the Celtic culture throughout history.The text gives an account for the history and expressions of Celtic art from its birth, 2800 years ago, untilits death in 13th century Ireland and Scotland. Special attention is payed to the golden age of ChristianCeltic art on the british islands, the era from which the pattern of the DUCIS logotype originates.

Abstract:
This study investigates in what respects Celtic mythology influenced J. R. R. Tolkien when writing the sagas incorporated in the mythopoeic compilation of The Silmarillion. Through narrative and comparative analysis, stories from the Irish prose collection Lebor Gabála Érenn, as well as the Welsh medieval manuscript Mabinogion, are collated to the tales of The Silmarillion in order to illuminate possible influences. The survey showed that even though Tolkien expressed a certain distaste for everything Celtic, several elements of Irish and Welsh mythology are indeed visible in his works.

Abstract:

In this essay I investigate how the Roman colonization (around 50 BC to 400 AD) affected the Celtic religion. I inquire which operators that were behind these changes and under what circumstances they happened. I take a closer look on three places in Gaul and one place and one area in Britain. In my study of these places I see that it was the elite of the Celtic societies who together and under pressure from Rome made these changes. The religion and gods did not change; instead the ritual ceremonies changed to fit into something that Rome thought was right. The places I study also show that there were differences in the religious places depending whether they were located in a city or in the country.

Abstract:
For the last 200 years, 6 wagons of the same Celtic inspired wagon type have been found in Denmark: two in a bog, two in a grave each, and two in a house each. This wagon type is called the Dejbjerg wagons, named after the two most known wagons in the category; the ones found in the bog called Præstegårdmose in Dejbjerg, Denmark. The purpose of the essay is to study the Dejbjerg wagons and their relation to the four-wheeled wagons of the Celtic Europe, the contacts between Denmark and Central Europe, and examine what the purpose, or rather the use, of the wagons’ deposition was – if they even had any. To be able to do this, action-based ritual theory – a theory popularised by Catherine Bell – has been used. The essay is concluded in that the way the wagons have been deposited must have meant something for the prehistoric Danish people, and the motifs and ornaments seen on the Danish wagons have a clear Celtic influence, which leads to the conclusion that the prehistoric Danish people must have had contacts in one way or another with the Celts.

Syftet är att fastställa gemensamma drag och paralleller, som återfinns i dels keltiska myter/keltiska texter och dels i Wuthering Heights, för att sedan kunna diskutera hur dessa gemensamma drag möter och interagerar med varandra.Resultat: Jag har funnit att det i Wuthering Heights’ ramberättelse återfinns gemensamma drag och paralleller, mellan voyage-genrerna immram & echtrae och Wuthering Heights. I Wuthering Heights ’ kärnberättelse har jag funnit gemensamma drag och paralleller mellan berättelserna hämtade från Leabhar Gabhála Éireann och Wuthering Heights (samtligt mytologiskt material är hämtat ur den mytologiska cykeln). I diskussionen om det innehållsliga mötet, kommer jag fram till att Mr. Lockwood förändrats i och genom sin resa. Jag finner också att Wuthering Heights förändrats i sitt möte med Mr. Lockwood. Lägger man sedan det mytiska filtret uppe på det innehållsliga mötet kan man tolka in ett att kulturellt möte mellan det keltiska/gamla och det europeiskt-kristna/nya som en fruktbar förening, där ingen av parterna är att ringakta. Genom att låta polariteter som dåtid/nutid, hedniskt/kristet och ödemark/civilisation beblanda sig med varandra, både textmässigt strukturellt sker en sammansmältning. Detta är något som ligger helt i linje med den mytologiska cykelns världsuppfattning, där element från vår värld beblandas med element från the Otherworld.

Abstract:
This dissertation contains a critical edition of the early Irish tale Aided Derbforgaill “the violent death of Derbforgaill”. It includes an introduction discussing the main thematic components of the tale as well as intertextuality, transmission and manuscript relationship. The edition is accompanied by transcripts from the three manuscript copies of the tale and textual notes. Aided Derbforgaill is an Ulster Cycle tale and belongs to a category of tales describing the death of prominent heroes, rarely heroines, in early Irish literature. Arriving in the shape of a bird to mate with the greatest of all heroes, Cú Chulainn, Derbforgaill is refused by Cú Chulainn on account of him having sucked her blood. Forced to enter a urination competition between women, and upon winning this, Derbforgaill is mutilated by the other competitors. The tale ends with two poems lamenting the death of Derbforgaill. This very short tale is complex, not only in its subject matter, but in the elliptical language of the poetry. Thematically the tale is a combination of very common motifs found elsewhere in early Irish literature, such as the Otherworld, metamorphosis and the love of someone unseen, and some rare motifs that are almost unique to this tale, such as blood sucking and the urination competition. The text also have clear sexual overtones.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research paper has been to understand the medieval and renaissance tablature of Robert ap Huw through a comparison between Paul Dooley’s and William Taylor’s recordings of the piece Kaniad y Gwyn Bibydd from the manuscript.  My text contains a short history of Robert ap Huw’s manuscript and a description of the medieval Welsh culture, in which the music was born. It is then followed by a musical analysis of the chosen piece. My work has led me to delve deep into different versions of how the tablature could be interpreted and made me understand how vast and complex this subject is.

Trots att halloween som festsed saknar historisk förankring ur svenskt perspektiv, har den i Sverige mycket snabbt fått bredare spridning i och med att allt fler människor deltar i firandet. Så finns det andra som känner motstånd och medvetet väljer att inte delta. Oavsett uppfattning finns oftast underliggande grundantaganden som utgör en slags bas för individens sätt att se, vilka jag vill ”synliggöra”. Frågan som uppsatsen söker besvara är svenskars argument för och emot halloween. Vad är det egentligen vi firar och varför? Uppsatsens huvudsakliga syfte är således att undersöka, vidare presentera en klargörande tolkning av människors inställning till seden.

Abstract:
This collection contains 13 papers presented in the workshop on the "The Celtic Languages in Contact" organised by Hildegard L. C. Tristram at the XIII International Celtic Congress in Bonn (Germany), July 23rd - 27th, 2007. The authors of two papers from another section also contributed their papers to this volume, as they deal with closely related issues. The time-span covered ranges from potential pre-historic contacts of Celtic with Altaic languages or Nostratic cognates in Celtic, through the hypothesis of Afro-Asiatic as a possible substrate for Celtic, Latin and Gaulish contacts in Gaul, the impact of Vulgar Latin on the formation of the Insular Celtic Languages as a linguistic area (Sprachbund), to various contact scenarios involving the modern Insular Celtic languages as well as English and French. The final paper reflects on the political status of the modern Insular Celtic languages in the Europe of the 27 EU countries.
