Abstract:

W trzeciej i zarazem ostatniej części autor odnosi wcześniej przedstawione zasady realizmu w stosunkach międzynarodowych do współczesnych problemów bezpieczeństwa w relacjach polsko-amerykańskich i polsko-rosyjskich.

Abstract:
The article claims that the international system is emerging out of an interlude of unipolarity – characterized by US dominance – , and entering an age of so-called “diffuse multipolarity”, i.e. a situation in which less clear-cut regional entities challenge the pre-eminence enjoyed by the US. Neorealism – with Kenneth N. Waltz’s theories about self-help and balancing – represents the main theoretical frame that supports my conjecture. This theory is enriched on the one hand by a broader view on systemic approach to the international system, and on the other hand by relevant information extracted out of international society theory (Conway W. Henderson) and out of declinism (Paul Kennedy). Together, they support data collected out of recent UN studies and publications such as The Economist.

Abstract:
In 1981, the Auditing Section of the American Accounting Association selected Kenneth W. Stringer to become the first recipient of the Distinguished Service in Auditing Award. Stringer was a pioneer in the auditing research efforts of Haskins and Sells for nearly 25 years. One of Stringer's many contributions was the development of a statistical sampling plan which was adopted by Haskins & Sells in 1962. The plan developed by Stringer is referred to in the literature as Probability-Proportional-to-Size sampling. This study provides insight into facets of Stringer's research efforts which include his evaluation of prior sampling plans, a behavioral laboratory experiment, the interdisciplinary process through which the plan was constructed, and the influence of Oscar Gellein, whom Stringer viewed as his mentor during his early career.

Abstract:
Ken Cavill knew from his high school years that his career lay in science. Whilst completing his Bachelor of Science at the University of Sydney he chose to focus on organic chemistry and made his academic career in that field. Ken gained his PhD at Liverpool University in England in 1949 and was awarded a DSc from that university in 1957. He was employed during World War 2 at W. Hermon Slade & Co., and then as a lecturer in chemistry at Sydney Technical College, becoming a senior lecturer at the newly formed University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he had a distinguished career in research and teaching until his retirement in 1982. He received the first personal chair awarded by the university in 1964 and was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1969. He was made an emeritus professor by UNSW in 1983. He actively pursued collaboration between chemistry and biology, and pioneered studies in Australia on the chemistry of insect venoms, attractants and repellents, leaving a legacy of a well-respected body of work in this field. Ken was awarded a Centenary of Federation Medal in 2001 for his service to Australian society and science in the field of organic biological chemistry. Pursuing his love of Australiana, he devoted his retirement to researching and writing about Australian silverware and jewellery manufacturers of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In JGS xxxii (1990), a volume devoted to the Portland vase, the sections on the discovery of the vase (85-102) and on the interpretation of its frieze (130-6) are jointly contributed by Kenneth Painter and David Whitehouse (hereafter P. and W.), who refer at some length to my own published views on these problems, but only to dismiss them as untenable. The purpose of this note is to show why they have not persuaded me to change my mind on either.
