Full text
Abstract:
Nine progeny populations, derived from a half-diallel and self-crosses of strawberry cultivars Vantage, Scotland, Governor Simcoe and Kent were evaluated for resistance to leaf scorch (Diplocarpon earlianum) as seedling runners and at the adult-plant stage. At both stages selfed Vantage and selfed Scotland were resistant; crosses between Vantage and Kent and between Governor Simcoe and Kent were susceptible; and remaining progeny populations were of intermediate resistance. A strong correlation (r = 0.970, P < 0.01) was observed between resistance of seedling runners and adult-plants of the nine S1 and F1 populations. The results suggest that strawberry genotypes can be evaluated effectively at the seedling stage in a breeding program for resistance to leaf scorch. Key words: Leaf scorch, Diplocarpon earlianum, strawberry, Fragaria × ananassa, seedling-runner, adult plant, resistance

Full text
Abstract:
To investigate the influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on biomass and root morphology, a greenhouse experiment was conducted using three elite strawberry ( Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cultivars (‘Kent’, ‘Jewel’, and ‘Saint-Pierre’). They were subjected to three NaCl levels (0, 30, and 60 mmol/L) and were inoculated and noninoculated (control) with AMF Glomus irregulare . The presence of AMF significantly changed root morphology and increased root-length percentages of medium (0.5 mm < root diameter φ ≤ 1.5 mm) and coarse (φ > 1.5 mm) roots, shoot and root tissue biomass, root to shoot ratio (R/S ratio), and specific root length (SRL), regardless of cultivar and salinity. In contrast, salt alone changed root morphology and decreased shoot and root tissue biomass, R/S ratio, and SRL. The AMF colonization rates were reduced linearly and significantly with increasing salinity levels. Cultivars responded differently to AMF than to salt stress. ‘Saint-Pierre’ seemed to be the most tolerant cultivar to salinity, while ‘Kent’ was the most sensitive. Consequently, AMF symbiosis highly enhanced salt tolerance of strawberry plants, which confirmed the potential use of mycorrhizal biotechnology in sustainable horticulture in arid areas.

Abstract:
The article presents the results of analysis of biodiversity and spatial-functional structure of the microbial complex in the soil rhizosphere, and development of ways to regulate the number of phytopathogenic micromycetes in the rhizosphere of soybean plants in organic production. Varieties of plants of soy were grown using the biopreparation "Philazonit", which was developed in the company "Philazonit of Ukraine". The study determined the effect of phylazonite biopreparation on the mycobiome of the rhizosphere of soybean plants. The interaction of plants of soy varieties Kent and Suzir’ja with phytopathogenic micromycetes in conditions of the organic production in the Central Forest-Steppe of Ukraine (Research farm “Skvyrske” of Institute of Agroecology and Nature Management of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (IANM of the NAAS) was investigated. The number of phytopathogenic micromycetes in the rhizosphere of plants of different varieties of soy is determined depending on the variety and technology of its cultivation. It was established that the biopreparation Philazonit inhibits the formation of the number of phytopathogenic micromycetes in the rhizosphere of plants of the soy variety Suzir’ja and Kent during the growing season. It is proved that the representatives of genera: Alternaria, Fusarium, Penicillium, Aspergillus are dominated in the rhizosphere of plants of soy of both varieties. In the rhizospheres of plants of the soy Suzir’ja variety the representatives of genus Penicillium (32.8%) most often occurred. The smallest number of micromycetes were members of the genus Aspergillus (9.5%). In the rhizosphere of plants of the Kent variety dominated by representatives of the genera Alternaria and Fusarium (35.6% and 34.1% respectively). Representatives of the genus Penicillium were 15% and Aspergillus – 15.3% It is proved noted that during the studies there was a correlation between the development of micromycetes and the hydrothermal coefficient – in the flowering phase (r=0.8) and in the ripening phase (r =0.9) except for the germination phase

Abstract:
We consider versions of the grasshopper problem (Goulko & Kent 2017 Proc. R. Soc. A 473 , 20170494) on the circle and the sphere, which are relevant to Bell inequalities. For a circle of circumference 2 π , we show that for unconstrained lawns of any length and arbitrary jump lengths, the supremum of the probability for the grasshopper’s jump to stay on the lawn is one. For antipodal lawns, which by definition contain precisely one of each pair of opposite points and have length π , we show this is true except when the jump length ϕ is of the form π ( p / q ) with p , q coprime and p odd. For these jump lengths, we show the optimal probability is 1 − 1/ q and construct optimal lawns. For a pair of antipodal lawns, we show that the optimal probability of jumping from one onto the other is 1 − 1/ q for p , q coprime, p odd and q even, and one in all other cases. For an antipodal lawn on the sphere, it is known (Kent & Pitalúa-García 2014 Phys. Rev. A 90 , 062124) that if ϕ = π / q , where q ∈ N , then the optimal retention probability of 1 − 1/ q for the grasshopper’s jump is provided by a hemispherical lawn. We show that in all other cases where 0 < ϕ < π /2, hemispherical lawns are not optimal, disproving the hemispherical colouring maximality hypotheses (Kent & Pitalúa-García 2014 Phys. Rev. A 90 , 062124). We discuss the implications for Bell experiments and related cryptographic tests.

Abstract:
Abstract Amblyomma maculatum Koch is the primary vector of Rickettsia parkeri, the etiologic agent of tidewater spotted fever, and can also carry and transmit a variety of other pathogens. This tick historically has been a costly nuisance to livestock owners in the southeastern United States. Over the past 6 yr, A. maculatum has been collected in numbers sufficient to demonstrate their establishment in Kent County, Delaware, and the presence of R. parkeri has been documented. Our goals were to determine the geographic distribution of A. maculatum and R. parkeri in Delaware, and to equate this to relative risk to the public of encountering R. parkeri-infected ticks. We surveyed for ticks in four locations throughout the state from May to August 2019, and found established A. maculatum populations in all three counties. Laboratory analysis of collected specimens by quantitative polymerase chain reaction detected R. parkeri in A. maculatum populations across the state. These results indicate that A. maculatum could present a health risk to inhabitants of the state, and they also historically have posed a risk to the livestock industry, making them an important consideration in the development and implementation of continued tick surveillance efforts and future policies regarding tick management.

Full text
Abstract:
In their paper, Kent et al. (1996) present an excellent case history of the use of dip moveout (DMO) and velocity‐filtering in the common midpoint (CMP) domain for the suppression of out‐of‐plane arrivals scattered from a deep sea‐floor. However, they imply that as a result of a “small offset approximation” the use of DMO in this way is limited to surveys recorded in water depths of at least a few kilometers with conventional streamer offsets. This is incorrect. I argue here that the application of DMO will reduce to water velocity the stacking velocity of arrivals scattered from the upper surface of the seafloor without any restriction on water depth. Furthermore, I argue that this use of DMO is simply an example of the equivalence between 2-D and 3-D DMO for marine surveys where all source‐receiver azimuths are equal, and that no “small offset approximation” is required. I first present a counter‐example to the claim of Kent et al. (1996) that seafloor scattering cannot be suppressed using DMO in shallow water, and then consider in more detail their argument for the application of DMO to out‐of‐plane scattering. In the discussion that follows, I only consider DMO in the context of a constant velocity medium.
