This dissertation uses “Derby Cruising” in order to open up the tension between African Americans in Louisville and the Kentucky Derby Festival, especially as that tension was manifest in the spaces of West Louisville. The Kentucky Derby Festival has long served as a site of mediation between people of color and official Louisville. Derby Cruising (1998-2005) and protests around the open housing movement (1967) and anti-police violence (2000) are presented as three critical sites where African American expressions of identity, representation, and belonging have been negotiated through the Kent

Abstract:
The chapter opens by discussing the mixed response to Black Gold's Louisiana Derby win among sportswriters and bookmakers, contrasted with the response from the colt's fans in New Orleans and Oklahoma. The chapter then turns to Black Gold's journey to Kentucky and the mystery surrounding his supposed workout over the full Kentucky Derby distance in sensational time. The narrative moves on to an overview of Black Gold's prospective rivals as they began converging on Kentucky, following by a presentation of the initial odds on the early favorites. From there, it concludes with a discussion of "expert" assessments of Rosa Hoots as a Derby owner and their dismissal of her own assessments of her colt and her trainer.

Abstract:
The chapter opens with Black Gold entering the next phase of his racing career at the Lexington track in Kentucky. It shows how he encountered bad luck in his next two starts before winning his third race in Kentucky, introduces Danny Connelly as his new jockey, and explores Rosa Hoots's increasing interest in and involvement with Black Gold. After discussing the colt's unfortunate loss in the Tobacco Stakes and his win in his next outing, the chapter concludes with his dramatic victory in the Bashford Manor Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard and indicates that this was the turning point in Rosa Hoots's attitude toward the colt: From this time forward, she looked at Black Gold as the horse who could fulfill her late husband's dream.

Abstract:
The chapter reintroduces Wise Counsellor as Black Gold's primary rival before giving an accounting of the Queen City Handicap at Latonia. While Wise Counsellor won, Black Gold turned in the worst race of his career, causing many pundits to dismiss him as a Kentucky Derby prospect. Reunited with Mooney and returned to Churchill Downs, Black Gold returned to his best form but was overshadowed by Wise Counsellor's sensational season-ending performance in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. The chapter ends with Rosa Hoot's announced decision to enter Black Gold in the Kentucky Derby and with the colt's return to New Orleans.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the origin of the Kentucky Derby, beginning with a biographical sketch of its founder, Meriweather Lewis Clark, Jr., and covering how he became involved with horse racing. It then turns to the specific circumstances of the Derby's founding and how Clark conceived his dream for the Churchill Downs track and the Kentucky Derby based on his experiences with European racing. Tracing the history of the Derby through its early years, the chapter looks at the increasing rifts between Colonel Clark and the Eastern racing establishment, as well as the effects of his own limitations on the Derby's growth and development. It concludes with Clark's suicide and the financial crisis that threatened to end the Kentucky Derby.

Abstract:
After providing an update on Black Gold's training, the chapter focuses on Wise Counsellor as the last major obstacle to Black Gold's Derby favoritism. A contrast is drawn between Wise Counsellor's apparent decline and Black Gold's continued vigor and fitness. Following a brief discussion of other Kentucky Derby contenders, the scene shifts to Pimlico, where Nellie Flag won the Preakness over several Kentucky Derby candidates following the withdrawal of Wise Counsellor. The chapter concludes with the withdrawal of Wise Counsellor from the Derby, to the relief of Hanley Webb.

Abstract:
The chapter begins with a look at Black Gold on the morning following his Kentucky Derby triumph. It then switches the scene to Matt Winn and his receipt of a "thank you" gift from Rosa Hoots, by then preparing to leave Louisville within a few days. From there, the chapter turns to "The Great Runout," as bookmakers who could not afford to pay off their customers—or who had never intended to—fled before their creditors could catch up with them. The chapter concludes with a discussion of a probable mix-up between the Rancocas Stable's Bracadale and Colonel Bradley's Beau Butler in the Derby placings.
