Abstract:
Après une présentation de Julius Africanus (IIIe siècle), qui aborde en particulier le problème de la coexistence au sein de son corpus d’une œuvre de tonalité païenne et d’écrits chrétiens en proposant un retour à l’hypothèse d’une conversion, le travail se consacre à la Lettre à Aristide sur la généalogie du Christ (Mt 1,1-17 ; Lc 3,23-38), connue uniquement par deux citations d’Eusèbe de Césarée, l’une dans son Histoire ecclésiastique, l’autre dans les Questions évangéliques, aujourd’hui perdues. Cette dernière circonstance implique la nécessité de recourir aux témoins secondaires des Questions évangéliques. La démonstration de l’indépendance des deux citations eusébiennes permet de faire place à un nouveau fragment du texte, conservé par des témoins grecs et syriaques. L’édition critique est accompagnée d’une traduction. L’étude subséquente porte sur deux problèmes interprétatifs majeurs. Le premier concerne la reconstitution du contexte polémique : la thèse combattue par Africanus dans la première partie de sa lettre est étudiée à l’aide de parallèles grecs et latins ; sa dimension historique est soulignée : elle ne consistait pas en une approche purement symbolique des généalogies évangéliques ; reposant sur l’idée d’une ascendance lévitico-judéenne de Jésus, elle lisait dans la divergence entre Matthieu et Luc l’expression de sa qualification au sacerdoce et à la royauté. L’origine et le statut de la solution qu’Africanus propose pour concilier leurs généalogies sont également étudiés : cette solution est reprise à une tradition judéo-chrétienne, mais est à distinguer de celle de membres de la famille de Jésus auxquels Africanus fait aussi allusion
This study starts with a brief presentation of Julius Africanus (3d cent. ) as a writer, with particular emphasis on the religious problem resulting of the fact that an apparently pagan work as well as Christian ones are attributed to him. The main focus of the investigation is on the letter to Aristides on Christ’s genealogy (Mt 1:1-17; Lk 3:23-38). This letter has come down to us only through two quotations in Eusebius of Caesarea: one in the Historia Ecclesiastica, the other in the now lost Quaestiones evangelicae. The loss of this latter work entails the necessity of a reconstruction on the basis of secondary witnesses. It can be shown that the two Eusebian quotations are independent from each other. On this basis it is possible to establish the authenticity of a new fragment attested in Greek and Syriac. The critical text is accompanied by a translation. The critical study deals with two major interpretative problems. The first one concerns the polemical context of the letter. The position attacked by Africanus is examined in light of Greek and Latin parallels. This position was not only a symbolic approach to the Gospels’ genealogies of Christ. Its upholders assumed that Jesus was of judeo-levitical descent and interpreted the two different genealogies as presenting him as King and Priest. The origin of Africanus’ own solution is also examined: his way of reconciling the diverging accounts of the Gospels is a Judeo-Christian tradition, which, however, is not linked to the relatives of Jesus to which Africanus alludes

Abstract:
Le De gestis in Perside (CPG III 6968), qui met en scène à la cour perse une polémique religieuse entre des païens, des juifs et des chrétiens sous l’arbitrage du philosophe Aphroditien, a fait l’objet de plusieurs éditions, dont la plus récente est celle d’E. Bratke en 1899. Le présent travail propose une nouvelle édition de cet écrit sur une base manuscrite élargie, accompagnée d’une première traduction française complète. La découverte d’une recension brève du texte renouvelle les questions d’ancrage chronologique et géographique de l’ouvrage. Il semble en effet que le but initial de l'ouvrage n’ait pas été antijudaïque. Si le Récit d’Aphroditien semble devoir son émergence à la prétention d’Hiérapolis de posséder une image du Christ rivalisant avec l’icône d’Édesse, il est plus difficile de cerner l’ancrage de la polémique dans son ensemble. Une étude des témoins indirects et des rapports de la traduction slave avec la tradition grecque du Récit d’Aphroditien complète ce travail
The De gestis in Perside (CPG III 6968), which contents a religious polemic at the Persian court between Pagans, Jews and Christians, has been edited in 1899 by E. Bratke. This dissertation presents a new critical edition of the work with a first complete french translation. Since a short form of the text has been discovered in a manuscript of the Vatican Library, the question of its date and place has to be reformulated. It seems, in particular, that the original aim of the discussion was not anti-Jewish. Aphroditian’s Tale must have emerged in a Christian community – Hierapolis in all likelihood – that wished to possess a picture of Christ capable of competing with that of Edessa. The context of emergence of the whole polemic remains unclear. Both Aphroditian’s Tale and part of the anti-Jewish argument have found an echo in later works. The Tale has moreover been translated in Slavic, with names of the Magi which proved to come from a Greek manuscript of Mount Athos

Abstract:
The names of the kings of the Fifth Dynasty may serve as a prototypical example for the re-evaluation of Manetho’s king-list: Userkaf, Sahure, Neferirkare, Shepseskare, Reneferef, Nirewoser, Djedkare-Isesi and Unas are all recorded in the king-list of Manetho as transmitted by Sextus Julius Africanus according to the Ecloga chronographiae of George Syncellus. Although the names as preserved have obviously suffered on a long way of copying manuscripts over and over again, a closer look at the Greek transcriptions reveals the high quality and the still unbroken relevance of Manetho’s Aegyptiaca for modern Egyptological scholarship, when dealing with chronology, onomastics and linguistics. As will be shown, there is a line, identifiable with variable degrees of difficultly but finally clearly discernible, which leads all the way down from the Old Kingdom to Manetho’s Aegyptiaca.
