Abstract:
The Centre of Excellence for Development Impact and Learning (CEDIL) develops and tests innovative methods for evaluation and evidence synthesis. Claims made in CEDIL studies are intended to inform socio-economic development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), or research about LMICs. This paper provides an overview of how, in CEDIL-funded studies, claims arising from research (termed ‘evidence claims’ for brevity) have been justified and communicated in order to inform policy decisions relating to socio-economic development. This study addresses two important questions about research

Abstract:
Record-breaking global temperatures and increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events underline the threat posed by the climate crisis. The Amazonia rainforest is widely regarded as one of several key bulwarks against global warming and a transition to a low-carbon future. Yet the worlds largest tropical forest is experiencing intense ecological degradation due to intensive cattle ranching, large-scale farming, unstainable mining, and a constellation of illegal activities. A paradigm shift is required in the economic model for the Amazonia and the people who live there. Put simp

In its infrastructure development work, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) engages and collaborates with numerous local, state, and national stakeholders. Projects incorporating innovative approaches, such as beneficial use (BU) of dredged materials and other natural and nature-based features (NNBF), are often not well-understood by stakeholders, including those at the community level. This often results in conflicts and project delays. Abstract:
We use the 2004 and 2009 Cambodia Socio-Economic Surveys to measure the impact of user fees, health equity funds, the government health subsidy scheme, vouchers and various combinations of these policies on household health spending. Employing a difference-indifferences estimator and a two-part model, we find that health equity funds and vouchers help to reduce household health spending whereas user fees and the government health subsidy scheme are unlikely to reduce household health spending as was originally designed. Continuation and expansion of health equity funds and voucher schemes is d

Abstract:
The links between climate change and conflict have been well-documented in recent observations and academic literature: far from being causally direct, these links often depend on specific conditions and occur through certain pathways (Koubi, 2019). For example, conflicts have been found to be more likely in areas with poor access to infrastructure and facilities (Detges, 2016), or where government distrust and political bias are prevalent (Detges, 2017). As such, climate change has often been described as a ‘threat multiplier’, making it imperative for security and development actors to consi

Abstract:
Targeting social assistance in situations of protracted conflict, displacement or recurrent climate shocks so that it reaches those most in need in a timely and effective manner, and without doing further harm, is a complex technical and political challenge for development and humanitarian actors across government and non-government sectors. Trade-offs involving costs beyond the economic – such as risk of exclusion, and concerns over protection and social cohesion – raise key questions about who to target, how to target or whether to target at all (i.e. through universal coverage or lotteries)

Abstract:
Uzbekistan has aimed to attain high-income country status by 2030 which implies that institutional reforms, innovation, macroeconomic stability, and regional development are among key priorities. Therefore, fostering the economic complexity of produced goods and services may become one of the benchmarks to assess the quality of economic growth. Countries with increased economic complexity index are associated with higher GDP per capita and life satisfaction indices at the country level.
