Abstract:
AbstractAs a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Seychelles is quite vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and adaptation is considered a national priority. Despite efforts to enhance its adaptive capacity, a number of barriers still hamper the adaptation process such as fragile institutions and inadequate governance to climate change, financial and human resource capacity constraints, and limited scientific knowledge and understanding of how climate change affects the country. A key barrier to climate change adaptation in the Seychelles is called “remote” or “legacy” barriers – linked to land use decisions made five decades ago during which wetlands were reclaimed for property development. Therefore, 80% of Seychelles’ critical infrastructures are located on the coastline and are exposed to floods, erosion, and sea level rise. Additionally, the pros and cons of hard and soft adaptation interventions in the Seychelles ranging from rock armoring, retaining wall, groynes to ecosystem-based adaptation actions such as timber piling, beach nourishment, dune management, rainwater harvesting, and mangrove and coral restoration are assessed with recommendations on the way forward. In other words, this chapter provides some examples of actions and strategies that may assist the island nations to improve on adaptation actions. An example that addresses partly the financial constrain is the Seychelles’ Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust (SeyCCAT) that provide funding for medium- and large-scale project in the Seychelles since 2015.

Abstract:
AbstractFor some time, we have been witnessing a series of alarms that warn us that our wealth is leading to an exaggerated and increasing use of energy and resources, as well as the deep and irreversible transformation of natural systems and social inequality, causing a continuous growth of the overall impact of the human species. “Ecology” and “environment” have become the key words of the third millennium: a media bombardment that has helped to overcome the insurmountable barrier of indifference and insensitivity. Everything that has to do with architectural design, from the choice of materials to the technologies used, has been confronted with the term “sustainability,” whose meaning, despite the attempt to place it in a univocal definitional apparatus, always takes on different nuances and meanings. The text defines the complex system of principles that animate architecture today whether those aimed at greater attention to and protection of the health of users and the environment or also concerns social and economic issues when it is proposed as a cultural, social, ecological and economic change necessary to safeguard future generations. Today, we are often witnesses of an inadequacy and poor quality that concerns precisely the aspects of health and safety. The origin of this failure is attributable to attitudes, indifferent to housing needs, easily found in the majority of designers: the environmental scale of the project intended mainly as morpho-typological abstraction, the superficiality in technological choices, and the poor verification of interactions between technical elements and housing needs.

Abstract:
AbstractHealthcare innovation is the development of new or improved healthcare policies, systems, products, technologies, services or methods of delivery, which aim to improve outcomes for people within healthcare. The Clinical Skills Development Service (CSDS) is one of the world’s largest healthcare simulation and training providers, which works towards healthcare improvement through training, collaboration, and innovation. This project provided the opportunity for academics to contribute new knowledge in Design Thinking strategies for healthcare innovation to the CSDS team. This was achieved through: (i) delivering a new-to-the world Design Thinking approach with an Observation Strategy suitable for use in the context of healthcare practices and (ii) a workshop protocol that was tested through first-hand experience with the CSDS team. Through this project we learned that the healthcare context is highly regulated, and therefore constrained in the technologies they are approved to employ. From the design team perspective, the inability of the healthcare sector to use creative online tools such as Padlet or Miro highly constrains the opportunity to explore different creative interactions across team members. From a healthcare professionals’ perspective, it was evident that some Design Thinking workshops require a longer iterative process to effectively identify opportunities for innovation, which is an area of emphasis in the healthcare sector. Two key aspects of this collaboration were the opportunity to expand our understanding of how quality improvement in healthcare can be achieved through design, and how a team combining two different worlds of knowledge and processes can meet in the middle to develop and deploy improved experiences through a co-design approach.

Abstract The paper presents a pilot study investigating the extent of sense sharing between loanwords in Middle English and their etyma in French and Latin, undertaken as part of a new three-year project. Fifty loanwords have been examined, with all senses in the borrowing and donor language(s) recorded using the major historical dictionaries. These have been standardised and mapped onto a framework using the categories of the Historical Thesaurus of English (Kay et al. 2022) to allow comparison. Our main results show that polysemy is nearly always mirrored but complete semantic overlap is rare; that senses unique to Middle English are common but short-lived; and that figurative senses are almost never borrowed into Middle English without the original literal senses.

Abstract:
This reflection examines the intersection of art, mining and sustainability through the creation of the Heavy Metal Suite—a collaborative musical project exploring the future of minerals and mining. The music was composed by artists from across the globe, and premiered in a Vancouver performance by Axiom Brass on Earth Day (22 April) 2024. The Suite comprises eight compositions focused on the key resources of copper, lithium, zinc, gold, silver, platinum, water and silicon. Each movement explores the intrinsic chemical properties of these resources, and develops the themes of colonialism, capitalism and consumption relevant throughout this volume. All of the composers contributed a movement to the Suite, inspired by a resource with particularly relevance to their own country. Following a brief introduction to the conception and evolution of this project by Philippe Tortell and Dorival Puccini, Jr., the founder of Axiom Brass, the eight composers reflect in turn on their creative processes and the resultant musical works.

Abstract:
Abstract In his combative book The myth of Japanese uniqueness, Dale (1986) argues that there is nothing “particularly unique” about Japanese culture, and he attacks the long tradition of nihonjiron, that is, discussions attempting “to define the specificity of Japanese identity.” Some of the figures cited by Dale in this connection are indeed striking (“According to the Nomura survey, in the roughly 30 years from 1946 to 1978, approximately 700 titles were published on the theme of Japanese identity, a remarkable 25% of which were issued in the peak three year period from 1976to 1978” [15]). I would agree that there is nothing “particularly” unique about Japanese culture, for every culture is unique. For this very reason, however, I cannot agree with the claim that Japanese uniqueness is a myth. It is true, of course, that to study a culture in its uniqueness we need an appropriate methodology. It is also true that “unique systems are intelligible only in reference to wider, general propositions” (33), and that “the unique can only be conceptualized if it has an element of recurrency” (34). But this is not a reason NOT to study Japanese culture in its uniqueness, or to try to “locate Japan uniquely in a universal map” (Lebra 1976:xiv). The fact that “logically, all societies might be placed uniquely on a universal map” (Dale 1986:33) makes the project of studying Japan in this perspective all the more interesting; and the necessary “recurrent elements” are provided by universal human concepts, lexicalized in all the languages of the world.

Abstract The Total Quality Management (TQM) process is one of the most misunderstood concepts in the construction and maintenance business today. It is actually a very simple thing, a process of continuous improvement at everything a company does. Since we know that a process is an ongoing thing that really never ends, it must be understood that the Total Quality process is a journey not a destination. To incorporate the Total Quality process onto the jobsite, contractors and owners must realize that you cannot have a Quality Project without the successful ingredients of quality, productivity

Abstract The offshore wind energy industry is focused on reducing the total cost of energy. Industrialized production and standardization are considered increasingly important elements in this pursuit. The intention of this paper is therefore to illustrate how this challenge, which is faced across the industry, can be dealt with in cooperation. The key words within the industry right now are doing it better, doing it smarter and doing it together. One way is to create new standards and guidelines within the industry, while other projects attempt to avoid previous times’ mistakes through partic
