Translation involves, among other things, the attempt to communicate the words of one language in another language. An important part of Bible translation is dealing with the translation of key biblical terms. But is it words that we are really translating, or rather the concepts that are associated with those words? Is it reasonable to expect that in translation we will find a word in one language that will communicate “the same meaning” as another word in another language, or borrow a word if necessary? Abstract:
Syntax and semantics are two key concepts for language understanding. Topic models typically represent the semantics of a text corpus, while removing syntactic information during preprocessing. Without preprocessing, the generated topics become uninterpretable because the syntactic words dominate generated topics. To learn interpretable topics while keeping valuable syntactic information, we propose a novel framework that can simultaneously learn both syntactic and semantic topics from the corpus without requiring any preprocessing. Abstract:
In response to the invasion of Ukraine, most OECD countries have announced punishing sanctions against Russia. In addition to targeting financial markets and service sectors, some countries have begun to impose restrictions on exports of Russia’s fossil fuels. In this paper, we analyze a scenario whereby most OECD countries put major restrictions on Russia’s energy exports. Results suggest that the short-term implications are likely to be non-trivial for EU – Russia’s largest energy export destination. Households’ real income could drop by 0.7-1.7 percent (relative to the reference case) with

Abstract:
In an attempt to control the flow of undocumented immigrants, successive US governments have considered everything from large scale deportation, amnesties, expanding visa programs, to fining firms who hire illegal workers. Using a comparative static model, Aguiar and Walmsley (2013), find that amnesties have a positive impact on the US economy. However such policies are one-time changes in the labor force, whose benefits diminish over time, and which are unlikely to stem the flow of undocumented workers or fulfill the demands of U.S. firms for cheap foreign labor. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has changed the media landscape not only in Ukraine but also around the world. The established standards that journalists have been using in their work for a long time need to be revised and adapted to the new conditions. The article analyzes the challenges that Ukrainian journalists have to overcome in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war. A comparative analysis of standards and rules for covering events in peacetime and wartime is presented. The article explores Polish-Ukrainian relations, in particular, the Ukrainian question, on the pages of the journal “Sprawy Narodowośсiowe” during 1931-1935. The authors emphasize that the millennia-long history of Polish-Ukrainian relations contains many complex, contradictory, and sometimes tragic pages. The situation of the Ukrainian national minority in interwar Poland, particularly in the first half of the 1930s, was challenging. The article proves that the editorial board of the “Sprawy Narodowośсiowe” journal (which was the governing body of the institute researching national issues, es

This Research Insights paper challenges the assumption that ‘good’ listening behaviors are sufficient to make employees feel listened to (which we refer to as felt listening, i.e., the holistic perception of feeling listened to). In Study 1, using 133 qualitative critical incidents, we explored leader behaviors that make employees feel listened to (or not) when they speak up to leaders at work. In Study 2, in an experiment with 187 employees, we examined the role of leader responses to employee voice on employee perceptions of felt listening and how leader responses influence employees’ intent

The links between climate change and conflict have been well-documented in recent observations and academic literature: far from being causally direct, these links often depend on specific conditions and occur through certain pathways (Koubi, 2019). For example, conflicts have been found to be more likely in areas with poor access to infrastructure and facilities (Detges, 2016), or where government distrust and political bias are prevalent (Detges, 2017). As such, climate change has often been described as a ‘threat multiplier’, making it imperative for security and development actors to consi

The central objective of many of these programs has been to improve learning outcomes—in particular, reading—for students in the early grades of primary school.
