Abstract:
Searchable encryption allows a remote server to search over encrypted documents without knowing the sensitive data contents. Prior searchable symmetric encryption schemes focus on single keyword search. Conjunctive Keyword Searches (CKS) schemes improve system usability by retrieving the matched documents. In this type of search, the user has to repeatedly perform the search protocol for many times. Most of existent (CKS) schemes use conjunctive keyword searches with fixed position keyword fields, this type of search is not useful for many applications, such as unstructured text. In our paper, we propose a new public key encryption scheme based on bilinear pairings, the scheme supports conjunctive keyword search queries on encrypted data without needing to specify the positions of the keywords where the keywords can be in any arbitrary order. Instead of giving the server one trapdoor for each keyword in the conjunction set, we use a bilinear map per a set of combined keywords to make them regarded as one keyword. In another meaning, the proposed method will retrieve the data in one round of communication between the user and server. Furthermore, the search process could not reveal any information about the number of keywords in the query expression. Through analysis section we determine how such scheme could be used to guarantee fast and secure access to the database.

Abstract. Keyword mnemonics is under certain conditions an effective approach for learning foreign-language vocabulary. It appears to be effective for words with high image vividness but not for words with low image vividness. In this study, two experiments were performed to assess the efficacy of a new keyword-generation procedure (peer generation). In Experiment 1, a sample of 363 high-school students was randomly divided into four groups. The subjects were required to learn L1 equivalents of a list of 16 Latin words (8 with high image vividness, 8 with low image vividness), using a) the rote method, or the keyword method with b) keywords and images generated and supplied by the experimenter, c) keywords and images generated by themselves, or d) keywords and images previously generated by peers (i.e., subjects with similar sociodemographic characteristics). Recall was tested immediately and one week later. For high-vividness words, recall was significantly better in the keyword groups than the rote method group. For low-vividness words, learning method had no significant effect. Experiment 2 was basically identical, except that the word lists comprised 32 words (16 high-vividness, 16 low-vividness). In this experiment, the peer-generated-keyword group showed significantly better recall of high-vividness words than the rote method groups and the subject generated keyword group; again, however, learning method had no significant effect on recall of low-vividness words.

Big Data are the new frontier for businesses and governments alike. Dealing with big data and extracting valuable and actionable knowledge from it poses one of the biggest challenges in computing and, simultaneously, provides one of the greatest opportunities for business, government and society alike. The content produced by the social media community and in particular the micro blogging community reflects one of the most opinion- and knowledge-rich, real-time accessible, expressive and diverse data sources, both in terms of content itself as well as context related knowledge such as user profiles including user relations. Harnessing the embedded knowledge and in particular the underlying opinion about certain topics and gaining a deeper understanding of the overall context will provide new opportunities in the inclusion of user opinions and preferences. This paper discusses a keyword-based classifier for short message based sentiment mining. It outlines a simple classification mechanism that has the potential to be extended to include additional sentiment dimensions. Eventually, this could provide a deeper understanding about user preferences, which in turn could actively and in almost real time influence further development activities or marketing campaigns.

Immediate and delayed retention for self-referencing and the keyword method were compared. 54 students were randomly assigned to one of four groups, Immediate-Self-reference, Immediate-keyword, Delayed-Self-reference, and Delayed-Keyword. The self-referencing groups were asked to use each of 20 foreign words in a sentence with the word “I” or “me,” and the keyword groups were asked to make an interactive image between the foreign word and its keyword. Each word was shown once for 45 sec. When recall of the English meanings was tested 2 min. or 1 wk. later, for the keyword technique recall was higher at 2 min. but not at 1 wk.

A Review of: Yang, L. (2016). Metadata effectiveness in internet discovery: An analysis of digital collection metadata elements and internet search engine keywords. College & Research Libraries, 77(1), 7-19. http://doi.org/10.5860/crl.77.1.7 Objective – To determine which metadata elements best facilitate discovery of digital collections. Design – Case study. Setting – A public research university serving over 32,000 graduate and undergraduate students in the Southwestern United States of America. Subjects – A sample of 22,559 keyword searches leading to the institution’s digital repository between August 1, 2013, and July 31, 2014. Methods – The author used Google Analytics to analyze 73,341 visits to the institution’s digital repository. He determined that 22,559 of these visits were due to keyword searches. Using Random Integer Generator, the author identified a random sample of 378 keyword searches. The author then matched the keywords with the Dublin Core and VRA Core metadata elements on the landing page in the digital repository to determine which metadata field had drawn the keyword searcher to that particular page. Many of these keywords matched to more than one metadata field, so the author also analyzed the metadata elements that generated unique keyword hits and those fields that were frequently matched together. Main Results – Title was the most matched metadata field with 279 matched keywords from searches. Description and Subject were also significant fields with 208 and 79 matches respectively. Slightly more than half of the results, 195 keywords, matched the institutional repository in one field only. Both Title and Description had significant match rates both independently and in conjunction with other elements, but Subject keywords were the sole match in only three of the sampled cases. Conclusion – The Dublin Core elements of Title, Description, and Subject were the most frequently matched fields in keyword searches. Academic librarians should focus on these elements when creating records in digital repositories to optimize traffic to their site from search engines.

Abstract:
Nowadays, an increasingly large amount of information exists on the web. Therefore, a method is needed that enables us to find necessary information quickly because this is becoming increasingly difficult for users. To solve this problem, information retrieval systems like Google and recommendation systems like that on Amazon are used. In this paper, we focus on information retrieval systems. These retrieval systems require index terms, which affect the precision of retrieval. Two methods generally decide index terms. One is analyzing a text using natural language processing and deciding index terms using varying amounts of statistics. The other is someone choosing document keywords as index terms. However, the latter method requires too much time and effort and becomes more impractical as information grows. Therefore, we propose the Nikkei annotator system, which is based on the model of the human brain and learns patterns of past keyword annotation and automatically outputs keywords that users prefer. The purposes of the proposed method are automating manual keyword annotation and achieving high speed and high accuracy keyword annotation. Experimental results showed that the proposed method is more accurate than TFIDF and Naive Bayes in P@5 and P@10. Moreover, these results also showed that the proposed method could annotate about 19 times faster than Naive Bayes.

AbstractSearch engine queries contain a great deal of private and potentially compromising information about users. One technique to prevent search engines from identifying the source of a query, and Internet service providers (ISPs) from identifying the contents of queries is to query the search engine over an anonymous network such as Tor.In this paper, we study the extent to which Website Fingerprinting can be extended to fingerprint individual queries or keywords to web applications, a task we call Keyword Fingerprinting (KF). We show that by augmenting traffic analysis using a two-stage approach with new task-specific feature sets, a passive network adversary can in many cases defeat the use of Tor to protect search engine queries.We explore three popular search engines, Google, Bing, and Duckduckgo, and several machine learning techniques with various experimental scenarios. Our experimental results show that KF can identify Google queries containing one of 300 targeted keywords with recall of 80% and precision of 91%, while identifying the specific monitored keyword among 300 search keywords with accuracy 48%. We also further investigate the factors that contribute to keyword fingerprintability to understand how search engines and users might protect against KF.

A major unresolved question in keyword mnemonics is whether the technique is more effective when the keyword is supplied by the researcher, or when it is generated by the participants. We have recently described a hybrid approach: keywords are selected by the researcher from among those generated by persons of similar sociodemographic characteristics to those of the persons with which the technique is to be used. In the present study we investigated whether recall is affected by the degree of among-persons concordance at the keyword generation stage. The 109 participants (12- to 15-year-olds) received a list of 10 Latin words, each with keyword (previously generated by persons of similar sociodemographic characteristics), translation to Spanish. For five of the 10 Latin words, there had been high among-subject concordance at the keyword generation stage, whereas for the remaining five concordance had been low. Our results indicate that both immediate and one-week recall were significantly better for words for which there had been high concordance in keyword selection. These results indicate ways in which the keyword method can be used more effectively to aid word learning.

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a method for text-query-based keyword spotting from online Chinese handwritten documents using character classification model. The similarity between the query word and handwriting is obtained by combining the character classification scores. The classifier is trained by one-versus-all strategy so that it gives high similarity to the target class and low scores to the others. Using character classification-based word similarity also helps overcome the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) problem. We use a character-synchronous dynamic search algorithm to efficiently spot the query word in large database. The retrieval performance is further improved by using competing character confusion and writer-adaptive thresholds. Our experimental results on a large handwriting database CASIA-OLHWDB justify the superiority of one-versus-all trained classifiers and the benefits of confidence transformation, character confusion and adaptive thresholds. Particularly, a one-versus-all trained prototype classifier performs as well as a linear support vector machine (SVM) classifier, but consumes much less storage of index file. The experimental comparison with keyword spotting based on handwritten text recognition also demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This thesis deals with one-document summarization of text data. Part of it is devoted to data preparation, mainly to the normalization. Listed are some of the stemming algorithms and it contains also description of lemmatization. The main part is devoted to Luhn"s method for summarization and its extension of use WordNet dictionary. Oswald summarization method is described and applied as well. Designed and implemented application performs automatic generation of abstracts using these methods. A set of experiments where developed, which verified correct functionality of the application and of extension of Luhn"s summarization method too.

Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine the perceptions of partner teachers and graduate fellows in 1 school regarding the barriers and successes made during their participation in a National Science Foundation Grant. This study included 9 partner teachers and 7 graduate fellows who participated in the Science First! NSF GK-12 Grant. There were 16 participants in this study. This study was conducted at North Side Elementary and East Tennessee State University. Partner teachers and graduate fellows were interviewed to gain perceptions of the barriers and successes of their participation in the implementation of the Science First! grant at North Side and East Tennessee State University from 2008-2013. A list of possible participants in the study was provided from the grant leadership team. The 16 participants in the study were chosen through purposeful sampling. During data analysis, 4 themes arose as successes and 4 themes arose as barriers. The success themes were (a) relationships, (b) mutual appreciation, (c) increased academic depth, and (d) professional growth. The barriers were (a) communication, (b) time, (c) expectations, and (d) preparation. Based on the research, the following conclusions were presented. The coordination of a major NSF-GK12 grant can provide STEM support and academic rigor for a high poverty school with leadership. Positive relationships between the graduate fellows and partner teachers as well as the 2 participating institutions are critical in fostering successful grant implementation. Professional growth through the grant partnerships was obtained. The participants gained a mutual appreciation for the roles and responsibilities of each other. There are ups and downs in implementing a large grant at 1 elementary school with a university, but the rewards of the potential to influence teacher practices in STEM and student learning are great. Recommendations from the study findings may assist future grant award winners or partnerships of any kind in building productive relationships between schools and other institutions.

Abstract:

This essay analysed how gender is established in students’ texts. The aim of the study was to find out if the students in a class in an upper secondary school were able to produce texts where female and male subjects were not influenced by prevailing gender roles. The analysis was based on Halliday’s Functional Grammar Theory. Furthermore, the results are interpreted in the light of the guidelines of the Curriculum and the Education Act. To fulfil the aim of this essay 32 texts were analysed from the extra linguistic factor of gender.

                      The linguistic factors examined were verbs (dynamic/stative, transitive/intransitive), if the subjects function as actors or not were the factors used to establish if there is a difference between how females and males are represented in the texts. Furthermore the use of adjectives, nouns and predicatives modifying the grammatical subjects were also taken in consideration in the analysis. The hypothesis was based on a previous study made on the teaching book Blueprint A and the results from this current study were compared to the results from that study. The study finds that in the texts examined females are established as more stative than males and because of that it is possible to draw conclusions that the teaching book can influence the student in their writing but also that school not always uphold the goals of the Curriculum and the Education Act in the issue regarding gender equality.

The selective functionalization of saturated hydrocarbons under mild conditions is of both biochemical and industrial importance. Initially, saturated hydrocarbons such as octahydro-1H-indene 80, octahydro-1H-4,7-methanoindene 81 and bicyclo[4.2.0]octan-7-one 82 were synthesized as starting materials. Then high temperature bromination reactions of these saturated hydrocarbons as a method for C-H bond activation have been investigated and the synthetic application of the formed intermediates has been searched. Furthermore, the role of the alkyl substituents in tricyclic systems and the effect of carbonyl group in bicyclo[4.2.0] octan-7-one 82 have been studied and the mechanism for the formation of the products have been discussed. Finally, whole products were conscientiously purified and characterized.

Abstract:

Bakgrund: När människor drabbas av venösa bensår kan vardagen drastiskt förändras. Ett stort antal individer drabbas av bensår och incidensen ökar med åldern. För att kunna ge en god omvårdnad behöver vårdpersonalen ökade kunskaper för att förstå bensårens inverkan på individens dagliga liv. Syfte: Syftet med studien var att beskriva hur det är att leva med venösa bensår. Metod: Studien utfördes som en allmän litteraturstudie. Fjorton empiriska studier ingick. Resultat: I samband med bensår förekommer en rad faktorer som på olika sätt påverkar det dagliga livet. Framträdande faktorer var smärta, svullna ben, lukt och läckage, rädsla och välbefinnande. Smärta var det funktionella hälsotillstånd som hade störst inverkan på det dagliga livet. Smärtan ledde till störd nattsömn, försämrad rörlighet och social isolering. Slutsats: Patienter med smärtsamma bensår har svårt att leva det liv som de önskar. Om distriktssköterskan synliggör sambandet mellan dagligt liv och funktionellt hälsotillstånd, kan specifika omvårdnadsåtgärder genomföras. Patienterna kan då uppnå ett önskvärt dagligt liv oavsett funktionellt hälsotillstånd.


Background: When people suffer from venous leg ulcers, their everyday life can be drastically changed. A large number of individuals suffer from leg ulcers and the incidences increase with age. In order to provide good nursing, care staff need more knowledge in order to understand the effects of the ulcers on the individual's daily life. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe what it is like to live with venous leg ulcers. Method: The study was carried out as a general literature review. Fourteen observational studies were included. Results: In connection with leg ulcers there are a number of factors that affect the patients’ daily lives in different ways. Important factors were pain, swollen legs, odor and leakage, fear and well-being. Pain was the functional state of health which had the greatest impact on daily life. The pain led to interrupted sleep, impaired mobility and social isolation. Conclusion: Patients with painful leg ulcers have difficulty living the life they desire. If the district nurse makes the connection between daily life and functional health status explicit, specific care measures can be implemented. Then patients can achieve a desirable everyday life regardless their functional state of health.

A síntese, aspectos estruturais, fotoquímica, fotofísica, atividade farmacológica e a fotoatividade citotóxica in vitro do complexo [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] (pc = ftalocianina) são descritas neste trabalho. O efeito biológico do complexo de rutênio foi estudado na presença e ausência de irradiação luminosa na janela terapêutica (600 - 850 nm), sob linhagem de células B16F10. Comparativamente, a atividade citotóxica de [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] foi muito maior que [Rupc], sob diferentes níveis de potência do laser, sugerindo a liberação de óxido nítrico pós-produção de oxigênio singlete, após irradiação luminosa, pode ser um importante mecanismo pelo qual o complexo nitrosilo de rutênio apresenta maior atividade biológica, na linhagem de célula estudada. Após a ativação por irradiação luminosa, o complexo [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] apresentou diminuição da viabilidade celular na linhagem B16/F10, com eficácia dependente da potência do laser. O encapsulamento de [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] em lipossoma aumentou em cerca de 25 % a atividade citotóxica do complexo nitrosilo, quando comparado com o mesmo, porém em solução de PBS. Esta eficácia foi diretamente proporcional à quantidade de rutênio no interior da célula, cuja concentração foi determinada por espectrometria de massa ICP-MS, evidenciando maior eficácia no mecanismo de transporte do complexo nitrosilo para o interior da célula. A atividade fotocitotóxica foi atribuída principalmente aos fenômenos de apoptose, cujo o mecanismo foi derivado da análise por citometria de fluxo. O mecanismo de liberação de NO dá-se por processo redutimétrico do complexo [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc], haja vista que a vasodilatação estudada é dependente do NO, liberado do complexo nitrosilo, e independente da irradiação luminosa. Aliás, concentração da ordem de 1,0 x 10-7 M do complexo de rutênio em PBS ocasionou 100 % de vasodilatação, cuja concentração é semelhante ao do nitroprussiato de sódio, medicamento utilizado em clínica médica com severas restrições. Em princípio, a liberação de óxido nítrico pós-produção de oxigênio singlete, oriundo da irradiação luminosa na janela terapêutica, do complexo nitrosilo de rutênio, pode constituir-se num poderoso mecanismo para aumentar a eficácia da terapia fotodinâmica, uma portentosa terapia clínica que encontra limitação dependente do tamanho da área cancerígena bem como da vascularização desta área.
The synthesis, structural aspects, photochemistry, photophysical, farmacological studies and in vitro photoinduced cytotoxic properties of [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] (pc = phthalocyanine) are described in this work. Its biological effect was studied in the presence and absence of therapeutic window light irradiation (600 - 850 nm) in B16/F10 cell line by means nitric oxide and singlet oxygen production. At comparable light irradiation potency levels [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] was more effective than [Rupc] suggesting nitric oxide release followed by singlet oxygen production upon light irradiation may be an important mechanism by which the nitrosyl ruthenium complex exhibits more biological activity in cells. Following visible light activation, the [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] complex showed an increased potency with photoinduced dose modifications in the B16/F10 cells. The liposome containing [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] complex was over 25 % more active than the corresponding ruthenium complex in PBS solution. It was directly proportional to the amount of ruthenium inside the cell obtained by ICP-mass spectrometry evidencing the cross membrane barrier providing phenomenal increase of [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] complex concentration inside the cell. The photocytotoxic activity was mainly attributed to the apoptosis phenomena by flux cytometry analysis. The mechanism of NO release occurs by reductimetric process of [Ru(NO)(ONO)pc] complex, considering the vasodilation studies, which vasorelaxation showed dependence on NO concentration and independence on light irradiation. Moreover, concentration of 1.0 x 10-7 M of the ruthenium complex in PBS caused 100% vasodilation, which is similar to the concentration of sodium nitroprusside, a drug used in medical clinic with severe restrictions. Furthermore, the nitric oxide release followed by singlet oxygen production upon light irradiation of the nitrosyl ruthenium complex produced two radicals capable to improve photodynamic therapy, a clinical therapy which efficiency is actually limited by the cancer area and vascularization

Magistro baigiamasis darbas „Rašymo polimorfija Ričardo Gavelio prozoje“ yra bandymas pristatyti naujus Gavelio kūrybos analizės taškus, kurie padėtų nustatyti šio autoriaus vietą lietuvių literatūros istorijoje. Darbe daugiausia remiamasi postruktūralistine literatūros ir kultūros teorija (Rolando Barthes‘o esė „Nulinis rašymo laipsnis“ ir Julijos Kristevos studija „Maišto prasmė ir beprasmybė. Psichoanalizės galios ir ribos“). Pirmoje darbo dalyje „Kas yra rašymas?“ analizuojama „bartiškoji“ rašymo koncepcija. Pabrėžiama, kad rašymas pirmiausia reiškia ne prasmės reprezentavimą, bet jos reiškimo būdą. Šis procesas yra neatsiejamas nuo formos problemos. Forma visada suponuoja tam tikrą sąmonės situaciją: vientisa forma signalizuoja vientisą, klasikinę sąmonę, susiskaidžiusi, chaotiška forma kalba apie heterogenišką sąmonę. Pirmoje darbo dalyje be rašymo problemos daug dėmesio skiriama rašymo-subjekto ryšių analizei. Šiame darbe remiamasi Barthes‘o rašymo ir formos koncepcija, tačiau manoma, kad Gavelio rašymas neišvengiamai liečia ir subjektą psichoanalitine prasme. Kalbėdami apie rašymo polimorfiją, neišvengiamai turime kalbėti ir apie subjektyvumo signifikaciją (subjektyvų tikrovės reikšminimą). Rašymo polimorfija šiame darbe reiškia rašymo sugebėjimą įgyti vis kitokią formą. Polimorfija reiškia, kad nebėra jokio centrinio naratyvo, kuris reguliuotų reikšmes. POLYMORPHY OF WRITING IN RICARDAS GAVELIS‘ FICTION ‘The Polymorpy of Writing in Ricardas Gavelis‘ Fiction‘ focuses on the analysis of Ricardas Gavelis’ fiction and discusses how the situation of a human being is outlined in the context of a changing cultural situation. The idea has been developed that Gavelis‘ fiction tries to rebel against all mental forms that suppresses identity. This author creates a polymorphous writing which can be described as alogic, nihilistic and sensual narration that destroys socialistic ideology, provincial patriotism or metaphysical stagnation of culture and with the variety of writing’s forms helps to ‘defend’ free and plural consciousness. The main theoretical ideals are taken from Roland Barthes and Julia Kristevas‘ concepts of writing. It is though that synthesis of these concepts helps to reveal the real variety of Gavelis‘ writing. The first part of the research focuses on the analysis of Barthes’ concept of writing and it’s connection to Kristeva’s concept. It is discussed how formalistic-structuralistic concept of subject and writing can be seen in the light of psychoanalytical ideas. Forms, signification, polymorphy – these are the object of the analyses in the first part. The polymorphy of writing means than Gavelis uses different ways to express the meaning in each novel. O One-shot foi criado de forma a preencher uma lacuna existente nos actuais serviços móveis. Até à data só era permitido ao cliente adquirir um determinado conteúdo se previamente tivesse algum tipo de direito/obrigação com a empresa, pagando por isso um montante além do que era cobrado pelo conteúdo propriamente dito. De forma a agradar a mais clientes e indo de encontro às suas intenções, foi desenvolvido este mecanismo que permite ao cliente pagar somente pelo que pretende, sem nenhum custo adicional. Dado que a Tim. W. “One-shot” is a mechanism that has the objective of a direct interaction between the developed application and the customer without having any more connection between the client and the company that supplies the service. The One-shot was created to fill an existing gap in the actual mobile services, since it was not possible to the customer to acquire one definitive content unless he became a “partner”, having to pay a weekly fee. In order to please more customers and going towards their intentions, this mechanism was developed so the customer only pays for what he wants. Since Tim. W. E is a worldwide company, it was necessary to respect and to implement the different versions of this mechanism for each operator of several countries. This allows for a great flexibility and changeable development of the One-Shoot.

Research supports evidence of on-going systemic racism toward the First Nations, Métis and Inuit, and New Canadians in society, and therefore, within our schools and our classrooms. Evidence also exists regarding how racism, invisibly instilled in educators as societal norms, permeates classrooms and helps continue to perpetuate marginalization and Othering of students. The research question was: How can teachers begin to deconstruct Euro-Centric, White Dominant beliefs, practices, attitudes and expectations in order to positively impact all students and their academic well-being? I examine the questions: What are some teachers doing which positively impacts learning for all students? What can be done to help teachers realize that some of their teaching practices and ways of dealing with students are disrespectful to the individual children and contribute to systemic racism?

Most of the papers collected in this book resulted from presentations and discussions undertaken during the V Lablita Workshop that took place at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, on August 23-25, 2011. The workshop was held in conjunction with the II Brazilian Seminar on Pragmatics and Prosody. The guiding themes for the joint event were illocution, modality, attitude, information patterning and speech annotation. Thus, all papers presented here are concerned with theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of speech. Among the papers in this volume, there are different theoretical orientations, which are mirrored through the methodological designs of studies pursued. However, all papers are based on the analysis of actual speech, be it from corpora or from experimental contexts trying to emulate natural speech. Prosody is the keyword that comes out from all the papers in this publication, which indicates the high standing of this category in relation to studies that are geared towards the understanding of major elements that are constitutive of the structuring of speech.

The multidimensional open epistemological active network MOGAN is the basis for the transition to a qualitatively new level of creating logical artificial intelligence. Mivar databases and rules became the foundation for the creation of MOGAN. The results of the analysis and generalization of data representation structures of various data models are presented: from relational to "Entity — Relationship" (ER-model). On the basis of this generalization, a new model of data and rules is created: the mivar information space "Thing-Property-Relation". The logic-computational processing of data in this new model of data and rules is shown, which has linear computational complexity relative to the number of rules. MOGAN is a development of Rule - Based Systems and allows you to quickly and easily design algorithms and work with logical reasoning in the "If..., Then..." format. This chapter identifies the limitations of the digitization of newspapers—one of the most popular resources for sport historians. First, copyright restricts the scope of digitization of some twentieth-century newspapers and periodicals. Second, digitization is compromised when the quality of newspaper print affects the ability to scan accurately and when scanning software confuses letters in texts using old fonts. Finally, searching by scanning software relies on an exact match between the keyword selected by the researcher and the description used by the journalist. Nevertheless, digital archives enable sport historians to access and examine large databases in relation to individuals, sports, teams, events, and sporting metaphors as these topics arise in newspapers and in other sources such as Google Books and court records.

This chapter argues that George Eliot too conflated religion with race as a resource for secular individualism, but also that she thought more deeply about what consequences this move held for a major liberal keyword: reading. Eliot’s The Spanish Gypsy (1868) and Daniel Deronda (1876) both stage a character’s recuperation of ethnic inheritance (Gypsy and Jewish, respectively) but only in Deronda does this recuperation successfully yield a many-sided individuality. This is because, as Eliot sees it, Judaism’s scriptural dimension allows one to fashion an idiosyncratic relationship to its racial history. Yet this valorization of scripture as the site at which one can personalize one’s relationship to tradition also runs up against Eliot’s long-standing wariness toward Protestant private interpretation—a fact that Deronda tries to get around by evaluating characters, not according to how well they interpret texts, but by how they relate to books as material metonyms of the past.

AbstractWith a significantly changing global climate and related impacts on our societies becoming increasingly visible, the call for a significant change of the energy production and consumption system gets increasing attention. Defined as energy transition, such change involves at least two dimensions: one technological and one social. Especially the latter is gaining importance because it is argued that the impact of technological innovation could be limited, if not harmful, if the technological would not be matched with social innovation. This refers to the emergence of decentralized energy systems at the local scale, and the increased involvement of non-state actors in shaping the transition, like civil society, business, and local public authorities. It includes new forms of governance, ranging from energy communities to the design of urban living labs. This work aims to provide the first insights for the further development of a theoretical framework in relation to governance and social innovation in the context of energy transition. It builds on a bibliometric quantitative analysis to explore the extent to which changes in energy governance are reflected in the scientific literature. Results indicate that energy governance issues have quite settled in the scientific literature across the world, but that social innovation is only a recently emerging topic. A snapshot interpretive analysis is then performed to get a better understanding of what types of energy governance and social innovations are addressed. These mostly refer to energy communities and organization types related to the use of renewable energies (e.g., cooperatives and public–private partnerships), as well as obstacles and opportunities that drive their implementation. A keyword analysis is used to get the first indications on the direction of the discussion. Generally, this seems rather heterogeneous, though most often it is related to urban development and cities, as well as in relation to the planning practice. Future research should extend and carry out further in-depth analysis of the preliminary insights outlined in this work.

This paper presents a Spatial Keyword Preference Query (SKPQ) enhanced by Linked Open Data. This query selects objects based on the textual description of features in their neighborhood. The spatial relationship between objects and features is explored by the SKPQ using a Spatial Inverted Index. In our approach, the spatial relationship is explored using SPARQL. However, the main benefit of using SPARQL is obtained by measuring the textual relevance between features’ description and user’s keywords. The object description in Linked Open Data is much richer than traditional spatial databases, which leads to a more precise similarity measure than the one employed in the traditional SKPQ. We present an enhanced SKPQ and two experimental evaluations of the proposed approach, comparing it with the traditional SKPQ. The first conducted experiment indicate a relative NDCG improvement of the proposed approach over the traditional SKPQ of 20% when using random query keywords. The second experiment shows that using real query keywords, our approach obtained a significant increase in the MAP score.

Abstract:
Due to the high cost of manual annotation, learning directly from the web has attracted broad attention. One issue that limits their performance is the problem of visual polysemy. To address this issue, we present an adaptive multi-model framework that resolves polysemy by visual disambiguation. Compared to existing methods, the primary advantage of our approach lies in that our approach can adapt to the dynamic changes in the search results. Our proposed framework consists of two major steps: we first discover and dynamically select the text queries according to the image search results, then we employ the proposed saliency-guided deep multi-instance learning network to remove outliers and learn classification models for visual disambiguation. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposed approach.

The benefits of the categorization functionality are demonstrated through a case study on the redesign of a fuel cell bipolar plate. In this case study, our categorization method reduced the effort to systematically identify biological phenomena by up to ∼80%.

This paper describes how inserting metadata such as part-of-speech, word sense and lexicographical data for each word in a natural-language source can help users identify relevant biological stimuli for biomimetic design. Although this research is still exploratory, initial qualitative observations demonstrate successful identification and separation of biological phenomena relevant to either desired functions or desired qualities. In addition, by incorporating the aforementioned metadata, we can automatically remove search results where search keywords act on abstract nouns or where keywords are used in irrelevant senses. The benefits of embedding metadata are demonstrated through a case study on the redesign of a fuel cell bipolar plate. In this case study, our method can be used to hide 64% of the search results that are unlikely to contain useful biological phenomena, reducing the effort to systematically identify relevant biological analogies.

Background: In an era of explosive growth in biomedical evidence, improving systematic review (SR) search processes is increasingly critical. Text-mining tools (TMTs) are a potentially powerful resource to improve and streamline search strategy development. Two types of TMTs are especially of interest to searchers: word frequency (useful for identifying most used keyword terms, e.g., PubReminer) and clustering (visualizing common themes, e.g., Carrot2). Objectives: The objectives of this study were to compare the benefits and trade-offs of searches with and without the use of TMTs for evidence synthesis products in real world settings. Specific questions included: (1) Do TMTs decrease the time spent developing search strategies? (2) How do TMTs affect the sensitivity and yield of searches? (3) Do TMTs identify groups of records that can be safely excluded in the search evaluation step? (4) Does the complexity of a systematic review topic affect TMT performance? In addition to quantitative data, we collected librarians' comments on their experiences using TMTs to explore when and how these new tools may be useful in systematic review search¬¬ creation. Methods: In this prospective comparative study, we included seven SR projects, and classified them into simple or complex topics. The project librarian used conventional “usual practice” (UP) methods to create the MEDLINE search strategy, while a paired TMT librarian simultaneously and independently created a search strategy using a variety of TMTs. TMT librarians could choose one or more freely available TMTs per category from a pre-selected list in each of three categories: (1) keyword/phrase tools: AntConc, PubReMiner; (2) subject term tools: MeSH on Demand, PubReMiner, Yale MeSH Analyzer; and (3) strategy evaluation tools: Carrot2, VOSviewer. We collected results from both MEDLINE searches (with and without TMTs), coded every citation’s origin (UP or TMT respectively), deduplicated them, and then sent the citation library to the review team for screening. When the draft report was submitted, we used the final list of included citations to calculate the sensitivity, precision, and number-needed-to-read for each search (with and without TMTs). Separately, we tracked the time spent on various aspects of search creation by each librarian. Simple and complex topics were analyzed separately to provide insight into whether TMTs could be more useful for one type of topic or another. Results: Across all reviews, UP searches seemed to perform better than TMT, but because of the small sample size, none of these differences was statistically significant. UP searches were slightly more sensitive (92% [95% confidence intervals (CI) 85–99%]) than TMT searches (84.9% [95% CI 74.4–95.4%]). The mean number-needed-to-read was 83 (SD 34) for UP and 90 (SD 68) for TMT. Keyword and subject term development using TMTs generally took less time than those developed using UP alone. The average total time was 12 hours (SD 8) to create a complete search strategy by UP librarians, and 5 hours (SD 2) for the TMT librarians. TMTs neither affected search evaluation time nor improved identification of exclusion concepts (irrelevant records) that can be safely removed from the search set. Conclusion: Across all reviews but one, TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches. For simple SR topics (i.e., single indication–single drug), TMT searches were slightly less sensitive, but reduced time spent in search design. For complex SR topics (e.g., multicomponent interventions), TMT searches were less sensitive than UP searches; nevertheless, in complex reviews, they identified unique eligible citations not found by the UP searches. TMT searches also reduced time spent in search strategy development. For all evidence synthesis types, TMT searches may be more efficient in reviews where comprehensiveness is not paramount, or as an adjunct to UP for evidence syntheses, because they can identify unique includable citations. If TMTs were easier to learn and use, their utility would be increased.

Abstract:
In September 2015, Ghana along all UN member states endorsed the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the cardinal agenda towards achieving a prosperous global future. The SDGs are strongly interdependent, making progress in all goals essential for a country’s achievement of sustainable development. While Ghana and other West African nations have exhibited significant economic and democratic development post-independence. The judiciary system and related legal frameworks, as well as the lack of rule law and political will for safeguarding the human rights of its citizens, falls short of considering violations against minorities. Will Ghana be able to localize human rights related SDGs, given that West African governments historically tended to promote internal security and stability at the expense of universal human rights? This paper focuses on evaluating the commitments made by Ghana towards achieving Agenda 2030, with a particular focus on the SDGs 10 and 16 relating to the promotion of reduced inequalities, peace, justice and accountable institutions. Moreover, this paper also analyzes legal instruments and state laws put in place post Ghana’s democratization in 1992 for the purpose of preventing discrimination and human rights violations in the nation. The article aims to highlight how Ghana’s post-independence political experience, the lack of rule of law, flaws in the judiciary system, and the weak public access to justice are obstacles to its effective localization of human rights SGDs. Those obstacles to Ghana’s compliance with SDGs 10 and 16 are outlined in this paper through a consideration of human rights violations faced by the Ghanaian Muslim and HIV minorities, poor prison conditions, limited public access to justice and the country’s failure to commit to international treaties on human rights.
