Coe, Neil M., and Neil Wrigley. Towards New Economic Geographies of Retail Globalization. Edited by Gordon L. Clark, Maryann P. Feldman, Meric S. Gertler, and Dariusz Wójcik. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198755609.013.37.

Abstract:
Since the mid-to-late 1990s, retail globalization has intensified, and a growing multidisciplinary literature profiles these dynamics. This chapter provides a snapshot of current levels of retail globalization, before briefly reviewing the literature on the drivers and dynamics of retail globalization from the late 1990s onwards. The analysis then advances current understandings in two ways. Firstly, the evidence on the impacts of globalization is reviewed to highlight that, far from being an inevitable process of rapid retail transnational corporation-led modernization, the outcomes have been highly variable and uneven, with profound variations across different national contexts. Secondly, focusing on the period since the global economic crisis of 2007–08, a new era of globalized distribution is characterized in which economic crisis and profound Internet-induced structural shifts have changed the dynamics of the process. To conclude, an economic geographical research agenda that builds upon these two dimensions is mapped out.Chapter keywords

Massumi, Brian. Parables for the Virtual. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478021971.

Full text
Abstract:
Since its publication twenty years ago, Brian Massumi's pioneering Parables for the Virtual has become an essential text for interdisciplinary scholars across the humanities. Massumi views the body and media such as television, film, and the internet as cultural formations that operate on multiple registers of sensation. Renewing and assessing William James's radical empiricism and Henri Bergson's philosophy of perception through the filter of the postwar French philosophy of Deleuze, Guattari, and Foucault, Massumi links a cultural logic of variation to questions of movement, affect, and sensation. Replacing the traditional opposition of literal and figural with distinctions between stasis and motion and between actual and virtual, Massumi tackles related theoretical issues by applying them to cultural mediums as diverse as architecture, body art, the digital art of Stelarc, and Ronald Reagan's acting career. The result is an intriguing combination of cultural theory, science, and philosophy that asserts itself in a crystalline and multifaceted argument. This twentieth anniversary edition includes a new preface in which Massumi situates the book in relation to developments since its publication and outlines the evolution of its main concepts. It also includes two short texts, “Keywords for Affect” and “Missed Conceptions about Affect,” in which Massumi explicates his approach to affect in ways that emphasize the book's political and philosophical stakes.

Abstract:
The Inter-Relationship Between E-Commerce and Right to Privacy: An Assessment” explores the intricate dynamics between the burgeoning world of e-commerce and the fundamental right to privacy. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of how these two spheres interact and influence each other, especially in the context of the digital age where online transactions and data exchanges are ubiquitous. Beginning with an introduction to the core concepts, the book systematically examines the nature and scope of information technology and e-commerce. It delves into the various types of e-commerce, their benefits and limitations, and the unique position of e-consumers in a borderless market. A significant portion of the book is dedicated to understanding the right to privacy, its meaning, and its particular relevance in India. A comparative study follows, exploring how different global regions, including the European Union, Japan, the United States, China, and Singapore, approach consumer privacy in e-commerce. This provides a diverse international perspective on the issue. The book then shifts focus to the Indian context, discussing the rights of consumers and the specific challenges posed by data privacy in e-commerce and e-banking. It analyzes the Indian legal system’s approach to consumer protection in e-commerce, highlighting cases of fraud and the measures taken to address these issues. In conclusion, the book synthesizes its findings and offers suggestions for future research and policy-making. This work is a valuable resource for students, legal professionals, and anyone interested in the interplay between digital commerce viii and privacy rights, offering insights into the challenges and opportunities presented by this intersection. Abstract:
This chapter argues that George Eliot too conflated religion with race as a resource for secular individualism, but also that she thought more deeply about what consequences this move held for a major liberal keyword: reading. Eliot’s The Spanish Gypsy (1868) and Daniel Deronda (1876) both stage a character’s recuperation of ethnic inheritance (Gypsy and Jewish, respectively) but only in Deronda does this recuperation successfully yield a many-sided individuality. This is because, as Eliot sees it, Judaism’s scriptural dimension allows one to fashion an idiosyncratic relationship to its racial history. Yet this valorization of scripture as the site at which one can personalize one’s relationship to tradition also runs up against Eliot’s long-standing wariness toward Protestant private interpretation—a fact that Deronda tries to get around by evaluating characters, not according to how well they interpret texts, but by how they relate to books as material metonyms of the past.

Hedrick, Donald. Shakespeare and Fun. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2025. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781350002876.

Full text
Abstract:
In this bold, original study Hedrick proposes an early modern ‘entertainment value’ revolution, to which Shakespeare contributed and in which he played a competitive role. As London’s nascent capitalist industry developed and the variety of entertainments proliferated, theatre contributes to the birth of entertainment value and a commercial trajectory toward what Marxist critic Adorno theorizes as ‘fun,’ seen contemporaneously in LasVegasization and the election of Donald Trump to U.S. Presidency. In this innovative approach to Shakespeare’s plays through their compulsory, competitive relation to other choices from London’s entertainment industry, such as sex work and gaming, Hedrick recovers a coherent internal dynamic of theatre’s ‘pleasure enclosure’ accompanying the revolutionary logic of capital’s new cultural and economic extremes. Applying these relations to original, insightful readings of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Winter’s Tale, and The Taming of the Shrew, Hedrick draws from cultural studies, contemporary and personal parallels, wide-ranging historical materials, and political theory. These include: the semantic shifts in keywords of pleasure, the practice of betting on actors, the psychology of paying admission before an entertainment, and various ‘reality shows’ such as contests of prose and verse. Continual insights emerge, both broad and specific: from ten ‘entertainment value axioms’ to Shakespeare’s awareness of entertainment value’s birth at moments in his late plays, marking a logic of value crisis, bubbles, and the danger of ‘too much fun.’

The Anesthesiology Critical Care Certification examination in particular provides an objective assessment from the perspective of physicians who have a keen perioperative mindset and skillset, while simultaneously demonstrating comfort in caring for patients from every background and co-morbidity as all such patients frequently eventually require pre-operative or post-operative management. The Anesthesiology Critical Care board review provides Critical Care Examination style stems with an emphasis on being oriented toward Anesthesiology Critical Care certification, though examination preparation for the Internal Medicine (Pulmonary Critical Care), Neurocritical Care and Surgical Critical Care could easily be achieved with this text as part of one’s preparation strategy. The authors provide clinical vignettes with realistic images and values to test one’s diagnostic and critical thinking approach to the perioperative patient. Furthermore, every chapter is authored by a physician board certified in critical care medicine. While most authors are anesthesiologists, our text includes content from intensivists with core training in Surgery and Neurology in order to provide a well-rounded perspective on the cases in this book. Much like ICU rounds, this book is systems based and covers the keywords listed by the American Board of Anesthesiology for certification in Critical Care Medicine. Finally, as each area of content is covered, reference materials are available for the reader to gain further expertise in each topical area. The author’s goal is the impart this text to the reader as a formidable tool for Critical Care Examination Preparation.

Leite, Naomi M., ed. Ethnography of Tourism. Lexington Books, 2019. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781978736870.

Full text
Abstract:
**Winner of the 2020 Edward M. Bruner Book Award from the Anthropology of Tourism Interest Group** "Leite, Castaneda, and Adams's volume is a beautiful retrospective of the enduring importance of Ed Bruner's work and legacy in our field, and we have no doubt that it will be used as a central historical, theoretical, and teaching text by many." - Prize Committee What does it mean to study tourism ethnographically? How has the ethnography of tourism changed from the 1970s to today? What theories, themes, and concepts drive contemporary research? Thirteen leading anthropologists of tourism address these questions and provide a critical introduction to the state of the art. Focusing on the experience-near, interpretive-humanistic approach to tourism studies widely associated with anthropologist Edward Bruner, the contributors draw on their fieldwork to illustrate and build upon key concepts in tourism ethnography, from experience, encounter, and emergent culture to authenticity, narrative, contested sites, the borderzone, embodiment, identity, and mobility. With its comprehensive introductory chapter, keyword-based organization, and engaging style, The Ethnography of Tourism will appeal to anthropology and tourism studies students, as well as to scholars in both fields and beyond. Burt, Eugene C. Serials Guide to Ethnoart. Greenwood Press, 1990. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350520929.

Full text
Abstract:
With the growth in interest in ethnographic materials, this is an essential publication for large public libraries serving patrons with interests in anthropology and art. Choice This indispensable directory of data on serials that contain information relevant to the study of ethnoart fills a gap long perceived by scholars of the indigenous arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, an area of academic focus in which reference materials have been generally lacking. Culled from a database developed by compiler Eugene C. Burt to track potentially useful periodicals in connection with his publication, Ethnoarts Index, the volume is designed to aid those with an interest in ethnoart in determining which serial publications best suit their research needs. In the main directory users can find information on former titles, publisher, editorial focus, content features, and a relevancy rating on each of almost 700 individual serial titles that have an editorial focus related to ethnoart. Nine separate appendices list recommended titles in various categories as well as serials that include indexing, bibliographic or abstracting services, ceased titles, and more. Titles include publications from the fields of art history, anthropology, history, area studies, librarianship, museum studies, and general interest magazines. Prefatory material explains the book's organization and the rationale for its recommendations and is followed by the major portion of the volume, the database of serials arranged alphabetically by title. In each entry more than 20 categories of information are provided including an assigned relevancy rating that rates the level of relevancy of a publication to ethnoart based on the frequency that ethnoart-oriented articles, reviews, etc. appear. Several indices make collection development recommendations based on the relevancy ratings, with approximate cost information. Additional appendices list titles by country of publication, relevant ceased titles, and more. Finally, a unique, rotated-keyword-in-title index that includes subtitles and former titles provides easy access to the main database. All of this information will be welcomed by librarians, scholars, collectors, dealers, curators, and students of ethnoart. Highly recommended for librarians building ethnoart collections; for university libraries where courses on any aspect of ethnoart are taught; and for libraries of museums and research institutions with an interest in ethnoart.

Palkova, Karina, Aleksandra Palkova, Vitālijs Rakstins, et al. Handbook for Academic and Scientific Institutions: Improve Risk Management and Institutional Resilience in the face of Security Threats. Rīga Stradiņš University, 2024. https://doi.org/10.25143/handbook_isbn-978-9934-618-61-1.

Full text
Abstract:
Science and academia have long been shaped by international competition, providing nations with strategic advantages in economic, technological, and military domains. Today, as globalization intensifies, academic and research institutions face complex security challenges, including cyber threats, foreign interference, and hybrid warfare. These risks jeopardize intellectual property, research integrity, and institutional autonomy. To address these threats, institutions must implement robust internal risk management systems, minimize vulnerabilities in supply chains, and reduce dependency on foreign actors. Higher education institutions (HEIs) are increasingly adopting an entrepreneurial approach, balancing traditional academic missions with the need to generate revenue, enhance global competitiveness, and build resilience. This ""entrepreneurial university"" concept aligns economic goals with academic innovation, enabling HEIs to adapt to globalization while maintaining their reputations and operational independence. Transnational education, student mobility, and international collaborations highlight these trends, underscoring the need for strong governance, quality assurance, and cultural adaptability. This handbook, developed through Latvian-Ukrainian collaboration, offers a comprehensive framework to strengthen risk management and resilience in academic and research environments. It draws on Ukraine’s experiences in maintaining educational continuity during conflict, providing actionable insights for institutions globally. Key areas include: * Advanced Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating institution-specific risks. Institutional Resilience: Strengthening infrastructure, personnel, and research systems. Security and Continuity Planning: Ensuring crisis preparedness and operational continuity. Case Studies: Practical applications from real-world scenarios. The handbook emphasizes a proactive approach, urging institutions to establish governance structures, designate risk managers, and foster a security-conscious culture. By adopting these practices, academic and research institutions can safeguard their missions, protect intellectual assets, and build resilience against emerging challenges in a rapidly changing global landscape. This project is funded by the Latvian–Ukrainian Joint Programme of Scientific and Technological Cooperation Project (2023) “Best Practice University: Transformation and Adaptation Process in Challenging Environment”, Project No LV_UA /2023/1. Scientific Sectoral Group: Social Sciences. Keywords: resilience; risk assessment; risk analysis; cybersecurity.
